Key starting assumptions:

• There is a great deal of good practice out there

…… the problem is it’s not celebrated, shared or debated enough

…… often learner benefit is assumed, not tested…… often it is left to the individual, rather than

driven by the organisation…… and how much impact does it have? – How

much more could it have?

Page 8: Whakakotahi: Communities of Practice West Coast Tertiary Providers Conference 27 November 2008 Peter Coolbear Strategising to Improve Teaching and Learning

Nov 2008

Also:

• We are working off a highly fragmented knowledge base

…… little coherence…… considerable duplication of effort with no

subsequent synthesis

Features of successful communities of practice

Purpose• Clarity of purpose• Consensus on reach• Clear benefits for individual members (and a mutual

understanding of what these benefits are)

Leadership• Focus – limited number of projects at any one time and each

has a champion• Robust moderation processes

Debates we plan to lead next year

• Teaching qualifications for practitioners in tertiary education ………… does Ako Aotearoa have a view?

• Professional accreditation? … would it be of value? What would it look like?

• Maximising the opportunity provided by the new QA proposals for self-assessment and review

• Capacity, capability, coherence and quality issues around tertiary education research in NZ
