What’s Good To Do Newsletter Issue 18: November 2013 www.whatsgoodtodo.com [email protected] 0161 787 8550 Welcome to the November edition of the What’s Good To Do newsletter We hope that you have a good Halloween and had lots of fun dressing up and tricking or treating. Now we are in to November and will soon be time for Bonfire (Guy Fawkes) night. We recommend going to an organised professional display, some local councils do run their own, this will not only save you money but are much safer than having your own display in your back garden. This month we have some great competitions, an excellent book review of The Befana Drama by Gianna Hartwright (this would make a good gift for children this Christmas) and an article about Cyberbullying. We also have Days Out idea’s and a What’s On section for some ideas of things to do this November. November is also the start of my favourite event (1-3 November), The Gadget Show Live @ Christmas at Earls Court in London where will be attending on Friday 1st and might even get to play the new PS4 a month before release! Take a look at our website for reviews from all around the UK of restaurants, theatre, days out, attractions, tours as well as product reviews such as DVD’s, books, toys and games (kids section) and lots more. You never know you might read a review of a restaurant you have never tried before or a theatre show that you weren’t quite show about seeing or that all-important toy as a Christmas gift and help you may up your mind. We have added a new search function so you can now search to see if we have a review on a venue or product that you are interested in. Welcome to the November edition of the

What’s Good To Do newsletter

We hope that you have a good Halloween and had lots of fun dressing up and tricking or treating. Now we are in to November

This month we have some great competitions, an excellent book review of The Befana Drama by Gianna Hartwright (this would

November is also the start of my favourite event (1-3 November), The Gadget Show Live @ Christmas at Earls Court in London

Great for Christmas

Featured Review

The Befana Drama

by Gianna Hartwright

www.thebefanadrama.com Reviewed by Patricia Shaw

Bef, broomsticks and boy band spell trouble for Santa. He had better be on the watch out for the Befana, who is

plotting revenge against her former fiancé and fellow VIPB.

A story set in today’s multicultural world where old traditions struggle to survive. The Befana is determined not to

be forgotten by her beloved Italian children. In this well written and enjoyable book the Befana takes you round

the world visiting a whole range of magical people and a variety of places in order to settle the score and ensure

the continuation of her festival. An extremely enjoyable book that I highly recommend to anyone looking for a

festive adventure.

This stupendous story starts in Italy, the traditional home of the Befana.

Have you asked yourself yet what a VIPB might be? It is a Very Important Present Bringer.

Exciting, thrilling, and fun to read.

Brilliant descriptions of Santa’s magical kingdom make you wish you could see it for yourself.

Excellent inclusion of the Italian language and reference to Italian culture.

Fantastic characters, beautifully described and carefully chosen.

A wonderful storyline which keeps you intrigued right up to the last page.

Nothing forgotten, all your questions answered before you’ve even asked them.

A must this Christmas for children aged 8+ (and young at heart minded adults).

Rating: 5/5 RRP: £8.99 Available to buy from Amazon and all good bookshops.

What’s Good To Do Newsletter

Featured Article One of our directors recently

appeared on TV for an item

about kids becoming tech savvy

and managing their internet

usage and for no reason

whatsoever was attacked on a

website by vicious trolls who

had nothing to contribute to the debate rather than add

distasteful, rude, moronic and insulting remarks all for the sole

purpose of causing upset. All of these remarks were not even

relevant to the item that was being discussed.

Why do these people feel they need to do this? Do they have so

little intelligence that the only way they feel they can interact is

to go on the attack? Or is it that they get some kind or perverse

enjoyment from causing upset and pain to a person they have

never met? Does the anonymity of a username and hiding

behind a computer make them feel safe (think again, it

doesn’t!)? Maybe their own lives are so dull, boring and pitiful

they and not happy unless everyone is as sad as they are? Or it

could something as simple as forwarding on a “joke” about

someone else that helps create a wider scope for the bullying.

Whatever the reasons, there is NO EXCUSE! Think about what

you are doing and the impact it could have on the recipients

lives.

What is Cyberbullying? Cyberbullying is the use of the internet and social media sites to harass, humiliate, harm or torment others in a hostile, deliberate manner. This can be from someone you know or an unknown person. Cyberbullying can happen to ANYONE, adult or child, for no reason whatsoever apart the person(s) committing the act has taken a dislike to you for whatever reason even if they don’t know you or have never even met up. These anonymous bullies sit behind their computer screens or

smartphones making their nasty little comments and hoping for a reaction from you and their sole purpose is to cause you upset or harm. What Can You Do About It? DO NOT RETALIATE and give them the satisfaction of an angry response that most require, this will just give them fuel and will continue in severity. Just ignore them. REPORT ABUSE - a lot of websites where comments can be posted will have a report abuse link, report the users to the website, ISP, social media pages and let them deal with it and hopefully ban that user. If it involves threats of violence report it to the police. BLOCK USER – if you can use the block feature in your email program and on your social media pages. If they are blocked they can’t they cannot contact you in anyway. RECORD EVERYTHING – always keep a record of any content by saving emails or texts, taking screenshots of status updates and tweets and saving any pictures. This will help you should it get to the stage where you need to take legal action. While there is no specific law relating to cyberbullying it can be considered a criminal offence under legislation such as the Protection from Harassment Act and the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act. If you think there should be a specific law against cyberbullying sign the petition at www.gopetition.com/petitions/cyber-bullying-should-be-made-a-crime.html Email us at [email protected] If you need more advice about bullying in any form visit www.beatbullying.org where they have lots of good advice from online mentors and counsellors.

Do you want more exposure for your

business? Why not advertise with us with

these affordable options!

Magazines

We currently have 2 quarterly magazines covering Manchester and London/Bedfordshire/

Hertfordshire with a distribution of 1000+ each. Our rates are very reasonable and affordable

with prices starting from £10 for an eighth of a A5 page. At these rates can you afford not to?

Our FREE magazines are distributed in schools, doctor surgeries, libraries, tourist offices and

many other places in the areas that they cover. We can even add your A5 flyers into our

magazines at £30 per 1000 (you will need to provide the flyer).

You too could run your own What’s Good To Do magazine in your area on a licence basis

subject to availability.

Website

Why not add your business or event to our searchable listings or have a banner on our Homepage. Our searchable listings cost from as little as £10 per year! Another great

option could be one of our £10 or larger £30 per month home page banner advert spaces.

Want more exposure and a FREE searchable listing on our website?

If you provide an offer or discount for our Membership Card we give you a FREE Standard Listing for as long as your offer is ‘LIVE’. You also have the

option of paying the difference to upgrade to a sponsored listing.

Newsletter

Our newsletter is emailed out on 1st of every month to subscribers as well as being downloaded from our website

and being viewed online from our Facebook and Twitter pages. For a small fee of £5 your business/product/venue

can have an advert in this newsletter plus 2 mentions on our Facebook page (subject to space and approval).
