“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” Mother Teresa

A simple action, a rock thrown in a pond, reminds us of change as we watch the impact create a widening circle – radiating ripples from the center. The ripples, all different sizes, result in a new visual. I suggest our work with WGA is much the same and we see more than surface results. Although we may never be aware of all of the ripple effects, we can be confident that our expanding circles are significantly impacting the lives of women and girls in Northeast Florida, especially in the area of mental health.

Through collective giving, WGA strives to improve the lives of women and girls and encourages women to be strategic philanthropists. Our members know that we can better address community problems by pooling our resources. As our organization matures, we not only see the impact, but the ripple effects of our efforts.

In 2014, as in the past, we were driven by specific goals. Through intentional planning, robust discussions and action, our work has become more fluid, responsive and relevant while remaining strategic and focused on the ever-changing community landscape. Our grants reached a record breaking $473,000, thanks to the unprecedented increase in membership and the generosity of three members. Diversifying our membership, critical for a healthy organization, took a major leap forward with theestablishment of the Delores Barr Weaver Fellows Program; and our endowment grew to over $2.2 million – including a significant increase in Legacy Members. Additionally, research and convenings have positioned us as a leader in connecting philanthropy with mental health care strategies.

Our collective work affirms that our Mission remains relevant, thanks to the wisdom of our founders. Their vision and the extraordinary support of The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida have been invaluable to WGA’s success. Finally, our members continue to make ripples of hope in our community a reality for many. I am grateful to our members for making WGA strong, relevant and effective. It truly has been an honor, one I will always cherish, to have served as president from 2012-2014.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

CONTINUING A LEGACY

At the 2014 Women’s Collective Giving Network Conference in St. Louis, it was clear that WGA is unique among giving circles across the country because of our endowment and the related Legacy Program. In 2001, WGA Founders established that an endowment would be a major element of the organization’s struc-ture by ensuring a portion of each member’s annual contribution is dedicated to its growth. Additionally, contributions in honor, or in memory of, individuals are also welcomed and encouraged.

WGA invites members to Build a Legacy through a one-time minimum gift of $25,000 that ensures life-long membership and provides support for WGA’s work in perpetuity. For more information, please contact Joanne E. Cohen, J.D. at 904-356-4483 or [email protected].

for Women and Girls

Kathleen Langford, WGA member since 2011”“I became a WGA member because I was inspired and

impressed by the collective commitment and ambition

of its members to improve the lives of girls and women

in our community through strategic grant making. So to

become a legacy member was, for me, the logical next

step. Margaret Mead said, ‘Never doubt that a small group

of committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is

the only thing that ever has.’ I believe WGA members are

those committed members.

2002-2014

Jessica, a young mom, came in through crisis services for counseling. Her husband had recently left her and drained the bank accounts. Jessica had no way to pay for counseling and was overwhelmed with the responsibility on her shoulders. Through Crisis Intervention and Empowerment techniques, Jessica was able to very quickly line up what she needed to do for herself and her child.

Jessica greatly benefitted from the immediate access of crisis services and how they were readily available in her moment of need. Thanks to WGA’s grant to Starting Point, Jessica did not have to navigate some of the typical barriers to treatment such as wait times, fees or extensive admission processes.

BEAM (Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministry, Inc.) $100,000 Single Parent Project

For 29 years, BEAM has been fighting hunger and homelessness in Jacksonville’s beaches communities. With this two-year grant, BEAM’s Single Parent Project will provide intensive wraparound services for low-income single mothers to help their families achieve long-term self-sufficiency. They will work collaboratively with the Sulzbacher Center to provide mental health counseling, and other agencies to provide financial planning, job training, GED prep and academic support for college enrollees.

Emergency Services Homeless Coalition $120,000 ReStorHER

Working in collaboration with the North Florida Women Veteran’s Association (WVA), the Emergency Services Homeless Coalition, Inc. (ESHC) will seek to addresssystematic inequalities facing female veterans in Duval County by implementing gender-based solutions to problems experienced accessing various systems of care. ReStorHer is a two-year project with two phases: research and analysis to identify the needs of women veterans and barriers to service; and the development of a research-based system of care with gender-specific solutions to provide greater access to benefits, services and community resources.

Hubbard House $98,000 RISE

Hubbard House is the only certified domestic violence center serving Duval and Baker Counties. This two-year grant will fund the RISE program for victims of domestic

violence. A new manager was hired to recruit, train, supervise and utilize three to five Master’s level interns and practicum students to provide 1,600 individual and group counseling hours annually to shelter and outreach clients. The program is designed to increase personal empowerment and coping skills, reduce trauma symptoms, enhance knowledge about mental health resources, and augment safety strategies.

The Way Free Medical Clinic, Inc. $20,000 Women’s Mental Health Program

Founded in 2006, The Way Free Medical Clinic provides access to medical care and services to the uninsured and indigent men, women and children of Clay County, the majority of whom are Hispanic immigrants. Currently, The Way offers more than 20 clinic days per month for Primary Care, Ob/Gyn, Pediatrics, Vision Services, and Mental Health Services through collaborations with three hospital systems (including Clay Behavioral Health), multiple clinics and volunteer medical providers. With this two-year grant, The Way will expand its mental health services to help women who may be struggling with depression or other mental illnesses and who otherwise may not access assistance.

Women’s Center of Jacksonville, Inc. $135,000 Mental Health Counseling

The Women’s Center of Jacksonville (WCJ) is the only women-focused local agency that offers mental health outpatient services to all women in Duval, Nassau, Clay, St. Johns and Baker Counties. This two-year grant will fund a full-time Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) who will see clients and provide required clinical supervision for up to three Master’s-level or Registered Interns who will collectively provide gender responsive, trauma informed mental health services to approximately 360 additional low income and other clients.

PARTNER FUNDING

DELORES BARR WEAVER FELLOWS

As a result of generous contributions from three partners, Nancy Chartrand, Barbara Harrell and Delores Barr Weaver, WGA’s grant pool was increased to fund two additional agencies in 2014. While WGA has received partner funding in the past, this year was unique as it addressed our goal of innovative partnerships by reaching out and being proactive to attract additional funds beyond what membership contributions and endowment earnings provide. Several convenings, facilitated by Sandy Cook, addressed the concept, and with valuable counsel from Nina Waters and Joanne Cohen, a better understanding of strategies to increase collaborative grant making ensued. As the demand for WGA grant funding continues to grow, we look to further expand our partnering efforts going forward.

Through a generous grant from Delores Barr Weaver and other sponsors, twelve women under the age of 40 have been installed as Delores Barr Weaver Fellows within WGA. A portion of their membership will be subsidized for four years, at which time it is hoped that the Fellows will continue their membership on their own. “The Women’s Giving Alliance has accomplished so much, and it can do even bigger things if we can make it possible for more great young women to learn about

strategic grantmaking,” Weaver said. “I’m looking forward to discovering these untapped potential members who are passionate about improving life for women and girls in Northeast Florida since they will help carry WGA forward into the future.”

The Fellows will be full members with all the rights and privileges of membership. The program will enlighten young women on the power of strategic philanthropy through WGA’s collective giving and introduce them to the issues impacting woman and girls in Northeast Florida. In addition to the benefits realized through membership diversity, WGA will learn from the Fellows how best to reach a younger demographic and better tailor efforts for their peers.

The first group of DBW Fellows were introduced at Member Forum in March of 2015.

WHO SHOULD JOIN We welcome women interested in promoting the mission of the Women’s Giving Alliance. We strive to attract a membership that is diverse and inclusive.

HOW IT WORKS Each WGA member contributes a minimum of $1,500 annually. Of that amount, $1,000 goes into the funding pool for grantmaking, $350 goes towards building the endowment and $150 covers administrative costs. Gifts to the Women’s Giving Alliance are tax deductible.

For the individual member of the Women’s Giving Alliance, a single annual gift of $1,500 has the impact of more than $300,000 through the power of collective giving. Nowhere else can relatively modest gifts do so much to assist organizations and the women and girls they serve. Members also have the comfort of knowing that the WGA endowment will ensure that the needs of women and girls will be addressed for years to come.

We invite you to join today.
