    ADVENTURE SUMMARY

On the road into Relford, a minor cave-in uncovers a buried secretdisclosing strange goings-on that began after a recent mine col-lapse. Soon after arriving in Relford itself, the PCs discover a plotto subvert the remaining locals; changing them into vile thralls ofa demon lord. The PCs discover that the sinister cult of Dagon isbehind this plot and an ancient temple to the demon lord is lo-cated in the nearby mine. Guarding this temple is a creature bothancient and evil.

    ADVENTURE BACKGROUND

Relford is a small but popular mining community that sits somemiles off the Trade Way, at the edge of the Daggerstone Hills. Thisarea is known for the gem deposits that litter the earth, and alsofor Dagger Rock; a natural granite monolith that thrusts more thanone-thousand feet into the sky. Although the area is known for minor tectonic activity and theoccasional earth-tremor, no-one was prepared for the earthquake

that hit the area almost a year ago. Paradoxically, this earthquakecaused relatively minor damage on the surface, but has causedwidespread changes to the area. Aside from a minor elevation inthe landscape, the mighty Rel River has diverted itself and nolonger flows steadily through the area. As such, the groundwaterhas decreased, throwing the region into a drought. A number oflives were lost in the Daggerstone Mines, caused by a minor col-lapse in one of the shafts. Worse, this collapse also uncovered anancient evil buried at this site, long before anyone ever stood inthe shadow of Dagger Rock. This area was once far below the sea approximately ten-thou-sand years ago, being part of the aquatic elf kingdom of Queelta-los. The city was destroyed by an invading force of sahuagin anda terrible kraken. Queeltalos defenses were brought low fromwithin; orchestrated by an insidious cult that worshipped thedemon lord Dagon as the true Master of the Deep. Led from theshadows by a coven of olhydrix hags, the cult of Dagon prosperedand crept into all levels of Queeltalos. By the time the cult wasdiscovered, it was too late to do anything about them. Queeltalosfell that very night in a frenzy of ripping teeth and claws. But even the cult of Dagon was not spared the full destructionof Queeltalos; a mighty volcano erupted in the sea bed the resultof a titanic battle between the kraken and an aquatic elf sorceress. As the halls of their secret temple came crashing down aroundthem, during this violent seismic upheaval, the last surviving ol-hydrix hag offered a final prayer to Dagon. She was saved, but en-trapped in the remains of their temple, underneath a newmountain range, far from the sea. As his last consort, Dagon alsocursed her with immortality. Now as Dagons divine guardian, theBride of Dagon was to wait nearly ten millennia until she couldrestore the cult to its former glory. It was during the most recent earthquake that the Temple ofDagon became accessible again, deep in the Daggerstone Mines.Miners trapped underground in the tunnel collapse warily ven-tured into the complex, seeking an alternate route to the surface. They soon became victims of the Bride of Dagons malevolentcharming gaze. Sensing the nearby settlement of Relford and thepossibility of restored power in a new cult, the Bride of Dagon hadher newly-charmed miners return to the collapsed tunnel and digfor their freedom. The labor was arduous and intensive, and theirair soon ran out. Of the ten miners trapped, only Cantor Dagger-stone survived, gasping for breath as he broke through to the mainpassage some days later. Once free, the charmed miner wasted notime in leading his comrades back to the olhydrixs chamber wherethey too, fell under her sway. Soon, these few began to work inreviving Dagons cult, by slowly and surreptitiously taking mem-bers of the community to the underground temple. There, theyare subject to the Bride of Dagons charming gaze or given over toa horrid transformation; becoming dagonspawn zombies. The

  • mine remains shut; closed by a decree from Cantor Daggerstone, before he shut himself away in his mansion. Now, the cult of Dagon has almost full control over Relford. Oneby one, the families in Relford disappear or become changed. Ifleft unchecked, the cult of Dagon will reach beyond Relford andinto the rest of the world.

    THE DENIZENS OF DAGONS TEMPLE

Olhydrix hags are unnatural creatures that originated from the vileunion between a sect of demon-worshippers and the demons theyworshipped. An olhydrix hag is a horrid amalgam of a woman andsquid; their upper body resembles a human torso with humanoidarms and head, while their lower body tapers into the body of asquid with many long and powerful tentacles. As Dagons divineguardian, The Bride of Dagon has a number of extra abilities thatmakes her very powerful. For more information regarding the his-tory of the olhydrix, see Appendix 2. In addition, a cult has arisen, worshipping Dagon through ritual sacrifice to the Bride of Dagon. The cult, its leader and its goals are detailed in Appendix 1.
