From the Headmaster

Birthday Books

Innes A (5T) was 10 over the Half Term and has very kindly donated this

‘Hive’ book for the library. Thank you and belated Happy Birthday Innes!

Dear Parents, I trust everyone had a restful Half Term. We, unfortunately, failed to move house so ours was not so productive, however Watford’s excellent last-minute win against Arsenal and superb performance at Chelsea, coupled with the announcement of a new UK Tour for Morrissey, more than made up for it…

Clearly, many of you were busy producing what has to be our most impressive set of cakes to date. Our annual Bake Sale never ceases to amaze me and you all got right behind the ‘movie’ theme. Pic-tures are shown below and, as you can see, the creativity and baking skills of our parent body (and boys!) know no bounds. Might be my age but I don’t seem to go to the cinema much anymore. When I was growing up, we seemed to go most weeks to see something at the cinema but I couldn’t name five films that have been released this year. Many of the boys have read the book ‘Wonder’ and I saw in a book shop at the weekend a copy of it with the sticker, “Read it before seeing the film”. I didn’t even know it was being made into a film but it will be interesting to see if the adaptation works as, having read the book and reading it to my children a year ago, it is such a powerful and clever story in the way each section is done from a different character’s perspective. I don’t know if the impact can be replicated; it will be interesting to see. I would like to see ‘Breathe’, judging by the interest around it, and who can’t be excited about a new Star Wars film at Christmas? So that’s three films right there. Maybe I’m more in touch with new media than I thought I was. Looking forward to seeing all mums at ‘Mums’ Night Out’ next Thurs-day at Bernardi’s. This was a real hoot last year and I’m sure will be the same this. Watch out, Marylebone… Have a good weekend,

This week’s Sportsman of the Week is Yousif Al-Saffar in 4M. Any boy capable of scoring 7 goals in a single match against Caldicott has a great footballing future ahead of him. Despite putting the ball in the net so frequently, it was great to see Yousif leave the pitch in his usual modest manner. Well done, Yousif!

This week’s Citizen of the Week is Beau M in

7G. Beau has made a tremendous commitment

to all lessons since September but this week

showed exemplary flair in English and

knowledge in Maths, helping others solve chal-

lenging problems, thereby generating a positive

class dynamic. Well done, Beau!

This week’s Sportsman’s of the Week is

Frederick H in 6M. Frederick scores more

goals than Tom Cleverley! He has become

a ‘Wetherby goal machine’, scoring an

amazing nine goals against Fulham Prep

this week. Definitely, football stardom

awaits. Well done, Frederick!

Staff News

Mr Blundell writes… Next Friday 10th November, Wetherby Prep will be holding a Remembrance Day Assembly at the Church of Annunciation. It would be great if every boy could make sure they arrive for the assembly next Friday for a prompt 8:30am start, wearing their poppy. Miss Fekete has boxes full of poppies at the front desk. In exchange for a poppy, a donation to the Royal British Legion, would be hugely appreciated. As this is a whole school event, I encourage parents to come to assembly to be part of Wetherby’s recognition of Remembrance Day.

From the Senior Master—Remembrance Day Assembly

Mrs Harris (neé Miss Collinson) writes... Tim and I got married on 21st October in Gloucestershire. Storm Bryan was in full force but despite this it was an amazing day. Panda (the dog) played a pretty important role as you can see in this photo. Thank you so much to everyone for your kind words and congratula-tions and apologies for changing my name so soon into my time at Wetherby!

Miss Orpwood writes…

Elias R (3P) is the winner of our music blog competition! He worked really hard over Half Term, did a lot of practice on both the piano and the harp and kept a very thorough blog of what he worked on. Well done, Elias!

From the Art Department—Christmas Cards are Ready to Order

Miss Clifford writes…

Every pupil has designed their own Christmas card during Art lessons. The sample cards have just arrived from the printers and they look fantastic! By now, form tutors will have handed out the sample cards and instructions for ordering so please check that you have yours. Ordering the Christmas cards is really easy, simply go onto The Dandy Art House website www.thedandyarthouse.com and place your order using your son’s unique reference number (this will start with the number 2138). This number is printed on the back of the sample Christmas card. The deadline to place an order is Friday 10th November. Your orders will be sent di-rectly to school and will be given to your son to take home in time for Christmas. Any queries with the above please contact either Ms Kirby [email protected] or Miss Clifford [email protected]

From Charities—Rwanda Trip

Miss Martin writes…

Miss Bevan and I were lucky enough to go out to Rwanda over Half Term to visit our friends at Rwanda Aid Headquarters in

Kamembe, which is in the remote South-West region of the country. Whilst there, we had the opportunity to see many of

the inspirational projects that are run by Rwanda Aid and their amazing team.

We began by visiting Baho Neza Mwana, a project that supports street children growing up in Kamembe. There are 22 boys

who live here permanently and this brilliant project enables them to lead their lives in less vulnerable conditions. During our

visit we were treated to an amazing African drum display, clearly the boys were so proud to show off their talents. We were

also given a tour of the project and saw where the boys grow vegetables which are used by the kitchen for all their meals.

Although this project is only in the early stages it is a growing one and one which is so important to teach the boys vital l ife

skills. It was such an enjoyable afternoon and we really look forward to continuing our relationship with Baho Neza Mwana

in the future.

The following day we visited our partnership school, Mwegera. Theobald, one of the Rwanda Aid teacher mentors, who we

have worked with for many years, gave us a thorough tour of the school. It was lovely to see the classroom that we facilitat-

ed in full use and the Wetherby plaque still firmly in place! A lot of the older children were in the midst of national tests and

were working hard with their teachers. We then spent the afternoon with the youngest children in P1, showing them how

to use colouring pencils and crayons. We were very impressed with their creativity and drawings which will soon form a

border for their blackboards. It was lovely to see so many familiar faces in the teaching team and they were incredibly

grateful for our visit. Continuing to work with Mwegera is such a pleasure, particularly seeing how much it has expanded

and improved in the last three years.

Wetherbuzz Week 8

Our third day in Rwanda began with a trip to one of the Rwanda Aid enterprise projects overseen by Jonas, Enterprise Manag-

er. Here we were able see some of the new Christmas Card designs which will be available to buy at Wetherby in the near fu-

ture. Following this we went down the road to Ngwino Nawe, a village for children with disabilities built by Rwanda Aid in

2008. The village provides support for children who have been neglected, abandoned by their families and excluded from

school because of their disabilities. Whilst staying at Ngwino Nawe the children benefit from art, music therapy and educa-

tion. We were able to spend time in the classrooms seeing how the children learn on a daily basis. It was incredible to watch

the teachers using sign language, alongside English and Kinyarwanda to communicate with their students. This was definitely

one of our highlights and we were truly inspired to witness how much care and support these children receive.

We were also fortunate enough to be in Rwanda for the grand opening of the new Teaching Training College (TTC) dormitory in

Mwezi. This building was generously funded by the pupils, parents, staff and friends of Wetherby Preparatory School. We

were treated to a day of celebrations which included a full tour of the TTC, cutting of the ribbon to the new dormitory, dancing

and many speeches. One of the most touching parts of the day was listening to a poem written by one of the students called

‘What can I say’. She talked about the unforgettable generosity of WPS and how much this has improved conditions at TTC

Mwezi. Reflecting on the day it is so apparent that teacher training is regarded as a high priority in the districts and we are

hoping that this will continue in the years to come.

We were both quite sad to leave such a beautiful and welcoming country but continue to be inspired by our partnership with

the Rwanda Aid team.

From the RS Department—Thank you

Mr Lock writes…

Many thanks again to all boys and parents for donating such a bountiful harvest this year. Our donation weighed in at 554.98kg (a very crude indication of what was given) and will be have been appreciated by many families who live close to our school and homes. Thank you.

U9 A Football Tournament at The Hall

Mr Dean writes…

On Saturday 14th October eight Under 9 footballers used the first morning of their Half Term holiday to attend a football tour-

nament hosted by The Hall. Despite the early morning start the team showed no signs of weariness, winning their first match

3 - 0 against Devonshire House, with two goals from Sacha Abecassis, and one from Yousif Al-Saffar.

From the Performance Corner— Breakfast Quinoa Porridge

Mr McClinton writes…

½ cup quinoa

¼ teaspoon cinnamon

1½ cup almond milk

½ cup water

2 tablespoons raw honey

1 teaspoon vanilla pod extract

pinch of Icelandic sea salt

organic goji berries

Add a tablespoon of coconut butter to a heated saucepan. Add quinoa flakes, water and season with cinnamon. Stir frequently. Add almond/cashew/hazelnut milk, vanilla pod extract, raw honey and a pinch of Icelandic sea salt. Cook until the grains are tender. Quinoa is a gluten free nutritiously dense plant based protein with a full spectrum of amino acids, vitamins and miner-als notably iron for energy metabolism and cognition. Cinnamon is a culinary spice that historically has been used for centuries. Noted for its ability to support sugar cravings, cinnamon adds a satisfying savoury twist and has been shown to enhance fine motor skills as well as cognition. Consuming sea salt ensures maintenance of sufficient sodium levels helping balance sodium potassium ratios. Sodium and potassium are electrolytes helping ensure a sufficient fluid balance in the body as well as in blood plasma and extracellular fluid. Abundant in nutrients, goji berries are a low sugar slightly sweet raisin like fruit excellent for eye health, valuable given the degree of written work our boys complete on a daily basis. Enjoy!

The good form continued in the next two games with solid 2-0 wins over both The Hall B and Durston House, another goal

from Sacha and three from Omer Eren seeing Wetherby to victory. The next game was against The Hall A, and having already

played earlier in the season (a tight 2-1 win to Wetherby) the boys knew it would be a tough game. This proved to be the

case as two evenly matched sides played out a 1-1 draw, Omer Eren again with the goal.

The next game was a comfortable 4 - 0 victory vs Durston House B (goals from Omer Eren (2), Sacha Abecassis & Ilya Walker-

Haworth), meaning Wetherby had four wins and one draw going into their final match against Hereward House. Hereward

also had a good record, meaning there was a lot riding on the final game. This ended in a slightly anti-climatic 0-0 draw leav-

ing the final standings as follows;

1. Wetherby

2. Hereward

3. Durston A

4. The Hall A

5. The Hall B

6. Durston B

7. Devonshire House

Four victories and two draws from six matches was enough to see

Wetherby finish top of the pile, only conceding one goal and scoring 12.

A fantastic performance from all involved!

Out of School Achievements and Photos

Edward S en France!

In order to improve speaking in French, over the Half Term

holiday, Edward (5T) spent a week visiting the beautiful

sites of Paris. He loved Versailles, Montmartre, the Louvre,

the Geode, Notre Dame. Here is a photo of him at the Ge-

ode. Tres bien, Edward!

Alexander S will always be an Aussie in Eng-

land!

Alexander (6M) braved the cold weather (and

the surf post Storm Bryan!) to go surfing in

Cornwall over the Half Term holiday. Even the

cold English seas are not enough to put off this

keen surfer.

Innes is a sailing champ!

Innes A (5T) passed Sailing RYA Level 3 during the holidays in

Greece and we think he did brilliantly. Well done, Innes!

During the Half Term break Jonathan R (7M) and Lachlan G (7G) both competed at the County Distance Meet for their swimming club, CWSC. They both swam the 1500m Freestyle event with both boys win-ning a place in their age group. Well done, boys!

The M's sweep the scoreboard for their local Ice Hockey Team Thomas M (3P) played a U11 Ice Hockey match for his Streatham team last Saturday and was awarded Man Of The Match. Streatham team won 5-4. Thomas was the youngest player, (only 7!) and scored two goals out of five. His 10 year old brother Philip from 6M played too and scored three goals. Continuing their winning streak on Sunday, Thomas played a U9 home game for Streatham against three teams and scored the most goals. 15 goals in total which is his personal record! Well done, Thomas. Here’s to more goals and trophies to come!

The H learn to sail in Croatia Jasper and James H write... During the Half Term we did a 5 day course sailing in Croatia to get our competent crew certificates whilst our dad got his day skipper. As well as preparing the boat for mooring and setting sail, duties also included preparing meals and washing up! James particularly enjoyed cleaning and preparing fresh mussels.

We also took a trip into Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina, famous for its Ottoman medieval bridge, destroyed in 1993 during the Bosnian War but rebuilt in 2004 through international efforts and is now a UNESCO world heritage site. Every year there is a local competition for locals to dive off the bridge 20 metres into the freezing cold Neretva river below. We were surprised to learn when we got back to school this week that Mr Metherell and we think, Mr Brawn, were also in Mostar at Half Term, we’re not sure they dived off the bridge though?!
