Victim services provides support, information and appropriate referrals to help minimize the impact of crime and tragedy. our free and confidential services are provided by a team of well-trained volunteer advocates, who respond as needed, alongside the rcmp, on a 24 hour basis.

We serve the City of Wetaskiwin, the County of Wetaskiwin (up to Battle Lake), the Town of Millet, and the summer villages on the south side of Pigeon Lake.

how cAn Victim serVices help? Our programs provide a continuum of services for victims, from the time of first response by police to the disposition of the case by the courts and afterwards. We deal with:

• Counselling and Community Referrals • Crisis Intervention • Police-Liaison • Court Support • Public Education and Presentations• Etc.

progrAms AVAilABle to Victims oF crime: The following are short explanations of some services and programs that are available to victims of crime:

Victim impAct stAtements (Vis): This is available to all victims of crime, and allows the victims to get involved with the criminal justice system. In addition to providing a statement to police and in Court, victims of a crime can choose to provide a vIS that explains how the crime affected them (emotionally and physically). If the accused is found guilty (or pleads guilty) to the crime,

wetAsKiwin AnD District Victim serVices Our office is located in the RCMP Detachment, 5005-48 Avenuewalk-ins are welcome | 780-312-7287 | www.victimservices.ca

the vIS will be considered by the Court and can influence the sentencing.

restitution: Restitution is when an offender is ordered by the Court to reimburse a victim for the financial loss that resulted from the crime committed by the offender. In order to receive Restitution, the victim must complete a Request for Restitution form and attach copies of receipts and other documents to prove the financial loss that is being claimed.

FinAnciAl BeneFits progrAm: This program provides financial benefits to eligible victims of violent crimes in Alberta. The money does not come directly from the offender, but rather from the Victims of Crime fund. The purpose of this program is not to reimburse for losses, but rather to acknowledge their victimization. There are also death benefits available to survivors of victims who died as a result of a violent crime in Alberta.

For more information about these programs/services, or about any of our other services, please contact us at 780-312-7287 or come by our office.

Are You interesteD in Volunteering to help people in Your own communitY? Because victim Services relies so heavily on volunteers, we are always looking for new people to assist us. Our Advocates provide support at the scene of the incident, in person or over the phone. For more information please contact us at 780-312-7287, or stop in to our office.
