How Much CDG Can be Fed to How Much CDG Can be Fed to Dairy Cows?Dairy Cows?
Recommend max. of ~ 20% of ration DM
e.g. ~10-13 lb/d of Dried; ~30-40 lb/d of Wet
Usually no palatability problems
Can usually formulate nutritionally
balanced diets
At 30% of DM:
May decrease DMI, especially if Wet CDG
May feed excess protein

Example Ration Considerations Example Ration Considerations for Dairy Cattlefor Dairy Cattle
• Diets containing 50:50 forage:concentrate1) If equal proportions of Alfalfa & Corn Silage:
CDG can replace most or all protein suppl.2) If mostly corn silage:
More CDG can be fed but may need some other protein supplement, check Lys, & P
3) If mostly alfalfa:Less CDG likely needed to supply diet CP
As protein source, 8 to 15% of ration DM
As an energy source, > 15% of ration DM
May reduce acidosis because highly digestible fiber in place of starch
Wt gains & feed efficiency of cattle fed wet distillers grains usually better than with corn
Wt gains and feed efficiency of cattle fed dry distillers grains usually similar to corn
At 15 to 25% of ration DM, wet distillers grains has it greatest value
Protein and energy in distillers grains have value
DM intake may be reduces when wet distillers grains fed @ > 30% of ration DM
Probably feeding excess proteinFeeding excess PP does not have value for finishing cattle fed corn
Corn Distillers Grains for Finishing Cattle
Corn Distillers Grains for Cattle Fed Roughages Growing cattle – Cows – Calves
• Energy, protein and P have valueComplements roughagesLess starch – No negative associative effectsEnergy should be greater than corn
• Feed to supply supplemental needs for protein and energy
