The Wesleyan September 2016
Westwood United Methodist Church “Connecting and Caring”
Friends in Christ, God said, “I am creating something new. There it is! Do you see it? I have put roads in deserts, streams in thirsty lands.” (Isaiah 43:19) God is doing something new in our midst! We are gearing up for new things to happen this fall through Team Vital. I am excited about what we can do together with God in this community and even beyond. September always brings about mixed emotions for me. It is a time to gear up for the new season and the new church year. It is a time for football to begin and the playoffs for baseball. It is a time for new beginnings in Sunday School and for a new season of Choir and bell choir. But it is also a time to remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001. A time of loss, grief, pain and death. God is with us in the midst of joy and also in the midst of pain and suffering. As we draw close to God and to one another, we are able to remember the pain and move forward in the grace and love of God. Join us as we remember on September 11. Join us as we start something new this fall. Join us as we connect with our community and care for all of our neighbors. As we start new and fresh this fall, let us seek new ways to serve God and to connect with the people in our community. Let us get to know our neighbors and the people who frequent the same stores we do. Let us reach out and see how we can love and serve them. Let us use this opportunity to connect with them and befriend them so we can also share the love of Christ with them. As the words of the hymn say it, “This is a day of new beginnings, time to remember and move on, time to believe what love is bringing, laying to rest the pain that’s gone.” So let us celebrate this time of new beginnings, let us celebrate what God is doing in our midst, let us work together and work with God in doing this new thing! Grace and Peace, Wayne

Back-to-School with Backpacks
Once again in the spirit of back-to-school giving, the Mission Team of Westwood United
Methodist Church recently donated over $500 worth of backpacks and school supplies
to Children's Aid and Family Services of Bergen County (CAFS). Eleven fully-loaded
backpacks will be given to children currently living in CAFS’ therapeutic group foster
homes. The therapeutic foster care program provides emotional support and a stable
living environment to children who have been removed from their homes for any
number of traumatic circumstances.
The church donates all proceeds – about
$10,000 per year – from its FaithWorks
Thriftshop, to primarily local non-profit
organizations. The Thriftshop is open
Monday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 pm and
the first and third Saturdays of the month
from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm (excluding
holidays). Donations of new and "like-new"
clothing and other items can be made during store hours. Most items are $0.25 to
$3.00. Come check it out, as you never know what treasure you’ll find!
The vision of Westwood United Methodist Church is to have a positive and meaningful
impact on our local community and to improve lives in the name of Christ. Guided by the
teachings and life example of Jesus Christ, we seek to partner with and directly serve
those in need through community outreach programs and individual acts of good works.
Led by Reverend Wayne Jones, Westwood United Methodist Church welcomes all to
attend its 10:00 am worship service on Sundays.
Pictured are Debbie, Charlotte, and Emily Moy, presenting the backpacks to Melinda
Iannarone, Volunteer and Resource Specialist at CAFS. The WUMC Mission Team
includes Heather Fitzsimmons, Marion Hosmer, Brenda Jorgensen, June Mele, Debbie
Moy, and Barbara Pallatta. Special thanks to FaithWorks Director, Marion Garnsey, who
continues to lead a dedicated team of thriftshop volunteers.
Louisiana Flood Relief
UMCOR has suggested that the best way to help out with the recovery of flooding in Louisianan is the following,
“The best ways to help are to assemble and send cleanup buckets and to support the UMCOR U.S. Disaster Response Advance, #901670, with your donations."

Connectional Giving
Connectional giving, or shared ministries, is an integral component of funding for the various missions and ministries undertaken by the United Methodist Church. Through shared ministries, financial support is provided for various world service projects, for educational programs both here and in Africa, and for ministerial education. Support for these programs is an essential part of our Christian faith.
Each church in the Greater New Jersey Conference, of which we are a part, has
been budgeted to support these shared ministries. This year, our connectional giving obligation is $25,332. Each church is expected to fully fund its obligation.
Last year we met about 75% of our shared ministries obligation. This year we would like to increase our contribution, as our increased participation will help make a difference in people’s lives both here and across the world. By our support of these worthwhile endeavors, we will not only help people in need, but will also strengthen our witness of Christ.
Please consider our shared ministries obligation when considering how you can support our church and its witness of Christ. Donations annotated to shared ministries will be dedicated to our connectivity giving obligations to help us meet our goal. Such contributions are always welcome and appreciated.

Sunday School partners with FaithWorks Thrift shop to make video!
On August 20th, the youth of the church took over FaithWorks thrift shop to record a special video on the shop. As the WUMC News team, the youth interviewed Marion
Garnsey and several shoppers to produce a 4-minute video that promotes FaithWorks. The video was recorded and edited by Alycia Monaco, a Media and
Communications student at The Catholic University of America. Many thanks to Alycia for
the great work. Be sure to attend the premiere of the video on Sunday, September 11.
Material Girls
The Material Girls have been busy working on eight quilts for Project Linus. These
small quilts will be distributed to children in hospitals by the Linus organization.
Care is being given to economically turn all the leftover material into colorful
scrap quilts.
Pastor Jones will bless them before they are delivered.
In addition, the Material Girls helped June Mele spruce up the Thrift Shop by
sewing new curtains and room dividers.
The Material Girls consist of four members…Louise Nolan, Diana Chan, Carol
Caputo and Judy Fringuello. New members are always welcome. The only
prerequisite is the ability to machine-sew a straight line. All work can be done at
home and meetings are kept to a minimum.
Volunteer and find satisfaction in providing cheer and comfort to hospitalized
children.

Last Spring, we helped to settle our first refugee family through Church World Service, and in conjunction with the Cresskill Congregational Church, and other folks in the Pascack Valley. That family’s apartment is pictured here. Since mid-August to the present, we have been again pooling our resources to help furnish another apartment for a family, expected to arrive the beginning of September. At this time, we know that “our” family is a family of five, including parents and three Middle School - age sons. A few individuals from our congregation have offered items, and the Faithworks Thriftshop has again provided many essential supplies. Most of the basic furnishings have been offered, but it is possible some items, such as lamps might still be needed. At this time precise sizes of the individuals is not known (for clothing). The Cresskill congregation has some room to store supplies, but they are still looking for storage … possibly a half empty garage or a connection with a local storage company. In addition to items, muscle power would be very welcome, as the vans need to be loaded and unloaded in a timely manner. Money Donations: to help cover costs of refrigerator (installed about $170), rental of U-Haul (about $150). Cash, or Checks for $20 + can be made out to Cresskill Congregational Church, 85 Union Ave, Cresskill, NJ 07626, with the notation that it is for support of “Refugee Welcome.” Pick-up Trucks, Drivers, and Strong Backs - sometime before, during, and possibly after the Labor Day weekend. Going forward, please keep your ears and eyes open for the next arrivals. Also, storage is a recurring concern, as the Cresskill Congregational Church will be needing their Sunday School rooms’ use after Labor Day. Many, many thanks to all for the wonderful response we’ve already witnessed. Please either call Bonnie Harley, at (201 666 9729) or E-mail to: [email protected] if you have any item donations or offers of help. Peace and Love, Bonnie
