I have said that lately referring to the Uni- versity of Tennessee Volunteers football team. Though this year s team has not been terrible, it has failed to live up to lofty expectations. The phrase, there is always next year, is often heard expressing disap- pointment as well as hope towards the teams chances of meeting next years expectations. I am sure some have grown weary since the Volunteers have not been to the Southeastern Conference championship since 2007. When I say there is always next year, I am expressing optimism that next year will be a better year for the team and the fans. Disappointment without hope will lead to despair. Despair is the com- plete loss or absence of hope. I have said that the worst thing that can happen to us is not the problems we experience, but to experience those problems without hope. (Thankfully a ballgame is only a game, although for some, sad to say, it seems their favorite team's winning and losing is the end of all life). On the other hand, when you are dealing with lifes hard realities, hope for a better day or a better year will make those times bearable. One of my favorite Bible passage is 29 He gives strength to the weary, And to him who lacks might He increases power. 30 Though youths grow weary and tired, And vigorous young men stumble badly, 31 Yet those who wait for the Lord Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary”. Isaiah 40:29- 31 The Lord through Isaiah instills hope in those who believe because in His time, He will give strength to the weary. The Lord will give us what is nec- essary to remain faithful and continue to walk and not become weary. know the weather conditions were not good and I feel sure the inclement weather affected the num-bers.) However, I admit that I struggle when what I see does not meet my expectations for the congre-gation. A person by the name of Barry Schwartz said “The secret to happiness is low expecta-tions.” Yes, having low expectations will prevent being disappointed when your high expectations were not met. On the other hand, since low expec-tations are not hard to meet, how much good can be accomplished? No brethren, I know in my life, the worthwhile goals that I have been able to reach were those that I created with high expectations. It was striving for and eventually reaching those goals that created the greatest happiness within me. I understand attendance goals these days are difficult for a variety of reasons. The number one reason is that church members choose to attend less frequently these days. Nevertheless, when a congregation is willing to accept less to prevent disappointment, it will only lead to an eventual greater disappointment. This year is rapidly coming to an end. The holidays will provide opportunities to travel and be involved in activities that may cause some to be absent from “their” local church. So what should be my attitude and yours concerning the congrega-tion? What about, there is always next year? I real-ize based on Scripture (James 4:13-15) that I am assuming a great deal when I say next year. Thus, I will say, if the Lord wills, there is always next year. As a congregation we can do what we can to finish 2016 with our best effort. Additionally we can look forward to next year with the goal of mak-ing 2017 a better year for the Westvue congrega-tion. I pray all of you who love and appreciate the congregation and desire its good will consider how you will be able to help the congregation strive forward and prosper in the New Year. Remember God will bless our efforts for good (I Corinthians 3:5-7). Let us do what we are able so that He will have the opportunity to bless the Westvue Church

of Christ. Rick Sympathy—We extend our sympathy to the family of Vivian Patterson (aunt of Rita Barnett, sister of former member Laverne Thomason). Her funeral service was conducted in Florida, Monday.
