Orleans County 4-Hers take part in ‘Grown in New York’by Kristina Gabalski
Rustic Pear Tart, Pumpkin Choco-late Chunk Cookies, Mexican Chick-en and Rice and No-Bake Pumpkin Cheesecake name just a few of the entries in this year’s Grown in New York Contest held Saturday, No-vember 7 at the Orleans County 4-H Fairgrounds.
4-Hers competed in Jr. Novice, Junior, Senior and Senior Novice divisions during the “silent” cook-ing demonstration. Participants pre-pared a recipe featuring items grown or produced in New York State and were judged on their cooking skills as well as the taste and nutritional value of the finished product.
Naomi Haberger, a 9th grader at Albion High School, participated in the event and prepared Cheese-cake Bars which featured New York State dairy products including cream

cheese and milk.Naomi explained that she was ex-
cited to participate because, “I love to cook.” She said she changed her recipe from a typical cheesecake to cheesecake bars and noted that she enjoyed taking part, but was, “ner-vous, really nervous.”
Recipes prepared can be baked, cooked or served cold - such as a salad. Extension officials said evalu-ators look for techniques used by par-ticipants, their organization and abil-ity to prepare the product. Additional evaluators tasted a finished product brought from home and looked for eye appeal, taste, and also reviewed the nutrition statement of the prod-uct.
Participants and those attending were able to sample the prepared dishes and received a recipe booklet with all recipes prepared.

Richard Stacy, of Bergen, was promoted to Chief Petty Officer in the New York Naval Militia.
The New York Naval Militia is the naval component of New York’s Military Forces which also includes the New York Army and Air National Guard.
Most of the 2,900 members of the Naval Militia are serving members of the Navy and Marine Corps Re-serve who also agree to serve as members of the state force when called by the governor. They provide skills to the state ranging from boat handlers to construction experts.
A small number of Naval Reserve mem-bers, like Stacy, are re-tired from the Navy or Marine Corps and serve as state volunteers.

Hueneme, California before transferring to the Navy Reserve. As a member of the Navy Reserve he served with Reserve Naval Mobile Construction Battalions 20 and 13 at the Naval Operational Support Center in Rochester.
Stacy serves as the Naval Militia liaison officer to the Navy Reserve in Rochester and is also the regional coordinator for the Mili-tary Emergency Boat Service.
He was New York Naval Militia member of the Year for 2011, and received the New York State Humane Service Medal for his service following Tropi-cal Storm Lee in 2011, Superstorm Sandy in 2012, and a snowstorm in Erie County in No-vember 2014.
