Bees, Cadets, Blue Devilsall win Section V wrestling titlesby Warren Kozireski

Byron-Bergen, Hilton and Brockport each won their Class BB, AA and A wres-tling championships respectively by at least 60 points over the second place challengers in meets held at Avon and Gates Chili.

The Bees won four individual titles with three teammates finishing second to take the Class BB title with 233 points. Avon was second and Holley third.

Anthony Miraglia took the 138 lb. weight class with a 6-3 decision in the final. The Bees also won three of the four highest weight classes with Will Thompson win-ning via fall in 2:49 at 182 lb., Adam Walter taking his 220 lb. final with a 4-1 decision and Brendan Marsocci picking up a third period pin in 4:41 at 285 lb.

Cameron Brumsted, Chad Toal and Da-kota White were runner-up at 106, 126 and 145 lb., respectively.

Holley’s Nick Shenck pinned his man in the 132 lb. final with just one second re-maining in the first period while teammate Austen Vroman finished second at 285 lb.

In Class AA, Hilton’s Yianni Diakomi-halis and Louis DePrez were named Out-standing Lightweight and Outstanding Heavyweight of the tournament as they and three other teammates won individual Section V titles in helping the Cadets earn 271 team points.

Diakomihalis improved to 46-0 in the tournament with a 17-6 major decision at

138 lbs. DePrez took 1:29 to pin his man in the final of the 170 lb. class while Mike Spallina won a 6-1 decision at 182 lb.

Austin Hertel won at 120 lb. with a 4-3 decision in the final while Greg Diakomi-halis won a 3-2 decision to finish first at 99 lb.

Brandon Wilmot (132 lb.), Sammy DePrez (152 lb.), John Fuino (195 lb.) and Donnie Neuffler (220 lb.) all finished sec-ond. Cadets head coach Craig Gross was named Coach of the Year in Class AA.

In Class A, Brockport won their third consecutive championship sending seven wrestlers to the finals.

Cody Anders took an 8-5 decision at 106 lb., Troy Ferris a 3-2 decision at 126 lb., Carson Daly by a 9-4 count at 145 lb. and Jake Sweet a 3-1 sudden victory in the 195 lb. final.

Spencerport was third in Class A with 207 points led by champions Tyler Mitchell (113 lb.) and Mason Wersinger (120 lb.). Alex Rawlings, Marek Costner and Kyle Pittman all finished second.

The other local champion was Church-ville-Chili’s Ty Raines, who won at 99 lb. with a 9-4 decision in the final to help the Saints to a ninth place standing.

Brockport head coach Mike Ferris was named Coach of the Year in Class A.

Hawks rally in second halfby Warren Kozireski

Holley overcame an eight-point first half deficit with a 25-8 second half run on their way to a 49-46 win over Oakfield-Alabama for their second win of the boys’ basketball season.

After getting outrebounded badly in the first half and trailing 24-16, the Hawks lim-ited the Hornets to just five points in the en-tire third quarter. Nicolas Passarell, Derek McArthur and Chris Balys then knocked down three-pointers on three consecutive trips late in the third and McArthur also added a lay-up over the final minute as the Hawks tied and then took a 36-31 lead into the final eight minutes.

Holley continued to play tight defense, limiting the Hornets to one trey over the first five minutes of the fourth quarter while getting field goals from McArthur, Passarell, Balys and Zach Vaccarelli to build their lead to ten points.

But Oakfield-Alabama would not go quietly, hitting on three straight trips down

the floor to cut the Hawks lead to just three points with 1:39 remaining.

But Holley junior Dylan Hillabush hit a jumper with 82 seconds left and an old-fashioned three-pointer with 68 seconds on the clock to push the lead back to eight. The Hornets counter-attacked hitting on three-straight trips of their own to cut the Hawks lead to one point with 35 seconds remaining.

The Hornets missed on both free throws after an intentional foul was called with 14 seconds left and could not convert on three more shot attempts in the closing seconds.

“We haven’t been in many games like this, so we tried to stay up-tempo and able to handle the pressure late in the game,” Holley head coach Matt Hennard said.

Hillabush led the Hawks with a double-double scoring a team-high 14 points with ten rebounds. McArthur scored 13 points while Vaccarelli added 12 points and eight rebounds in just his third game back from injury. Balys and Passarell each added five points.

DiversionsBrockport basketball wins third on senior nightby Warren Kozireski

Senior and four-year starter Rachel Benedict scored a game-high 26 points including six of her team’s eight fourth quarter points as Brockport hung on for a 42-40 victory over Churchville-Chili in the final regular season girls’ basketball game for both teams.

The Blue Devils built a 16-9 first quarter lead before both teams went cold in the second quarter scoring a combined nine points. Brockport held an eight-point lead at the half.

The Saints came out of the locker room with energy and scored eight of the first ten points in the half with senior captain Abigail Tabone scoring twice and Emily Tabone and Kristen Gawron each adding a bucket.

The fourth quarter opened Abigail Tabone tying the contest 34-34 with a lay-up, but the Blue Devils countered scoring on three trips as Benedict hit two of the buckets with a free throw and Ashlyn Raines knocking down a jumper to make it a seven-point lead.

The Saints returned volley as Tiffany Binion and Emily Tabone hit free throws sandwiching a jumper from Jamilyn Keele to bring them back to within three.

A pair of free throws by Skylar Burgess cut the Brockport lead to just one point with 1:14 remaining, but the Saints made only three of eight free throws overall in the fourth quarter.

“The key was the way we moved the ball and we played great defense,” Benedict said. “And the big crowd for senior night was a big advantage.”

Benedict, who surpassed the 1,000 career point mark at Brighton January 12 and was tied for sixth in Section V with 397 points this season, added five rebounds and two steals to her 26 points while Madison Byrne had eight points with seven rebounds. Freshman Bryn Hayes added four points.

Churchville-Chili was led by Abigail Tabone’s 14 points. Burgess had nine points and Binion added eight.

The Saints entered the Section V playoffs seeded tenth in Class AA with a 4-16 record. Brockport, at 3-17, was also seeded tenth but in Class A1.

NEW! Brockport CSD students excel at Rotary Oratorical Contest

Three local contest candidates in the Rotary District 7120 annual Oratorical Contest presented original speeches on Rotary’s 4-Way Test at a recent Brockport Club meeting.

Rotary’s 4 - Way Test is: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better relationships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Brockport students Max Sevor, Jacob Rogers and Neil Singh explained the test and related it to their lives and their world.

The club judged the students based on content and presentation, which led them

to select Sevor and Rogers as winners to en-ter into the next level. The two participants will go on to the regional level where they must memorize their five to seven minute long speeches. Winners from the regionals will then go to the district finals where college scholarships worth a total of over $50,000 will be available.

The club congratulates all three stu-dents for their excellent effort and to their families and others who supported their endeavors.

Provided information

Brockport Rotary Brad Mitchell presents club banners to the three Brockport High School contest-ants, Max Sevor, Jacob Rogers and Neil Singh with local club contest Chair Lorrie D’Angelo. All three students did an outstanding job of writing and presenting their speeches on Rotary’s 4-Way Test - making for a very close race. Rogers and Sevor will go onto the Rotary District 7120 semifinals in February and possibly to the finals in March. Provided photo.

Students build houses for dogs in needStudents at Monroe2-Orleans BOCES in

Spencerport used their skills to give back to the local four-legged community. The students, under the direction of carpentry instructor Pete Sharpe, have partnered with the Craig A. Goodrich Dog Shelter in Hamlin to help dogs in need.

Using lumber donated by Stull Lum-ber (Brockport) and roof tiles donated by Lakeside Quality Building (Brockport), Mr. Sharpe’s class has constructed several houses to help protect local pets from winter weather.

Many local dogs are left outdoors during winter months with inadequate shelter. This situation is most commonly a result of low-income families who cannot afford sufficient doghouses. To combat this problem, volun-teers at the Hamlin dog shelter reached out to the local community for supply donations and approached Mr. Sharpe with the idea.

The students designed the houses to be wind resistant and well insulated, with waterproof roofs. The finished product al-lows even large dogs to comfortably stand, lay down and turn around while remaining warm and protected.

The doghouse project has taught the stu-dents the value of their skills by changing these animals’ lives. It also sets an example of how the towns and villages on the west side can work together to improve the overall

community. The staff at the Craig A. Goodrich Shelter

is thankful for the generous donations and commends Mr. Sharpe and his students on their hard work and craftsmanship.
