Code of BehaviourWestmount studentsand staff are committedto a welcoming andrespectful learningenvironment.  Teachershave been trained onRon Morrish's With AllDue Respect, TRIBESand Future Aces,anti-bullying andclassroom managementstrategies based on afocus on positiveoutcomes.  The SchoolCode of Behaviour isbased on concepts ofRespect and Empathyand children who breakthe rules need to thinkabout which rule wasbroken in theircase-perhaps they didnot play safely, or theydid not show respect toa teacher or a friend. Allchildren have the right tobe SAFE, STRONG andFREE.

Westmount Junior School  celebrated its 50th year of existence in2010, with a large community funfair. It has 370 students and 22teachers, including Special Education, Reading Recovery, Musicand Media Literacy. We now have 4 Full Day Kindergartens.Teacher grade teams plan together and use common tools toassist in shared assessment and planning.  Professional LearningCommunities (PLCs) develop Teaching and Learning CriticalPathways. Students are challenged to focus on higher-orderthinking skills and the big ideas in literature as well asfar-reaching mathematical concepts. Over the past 5 years,Westmount students have shown continuous growth in EQAOscores: Reading scores rose 17%, Writing scores rose 26 % andMath scores rose 11%. 

Parent/ CommunityEngagementWestmount has a very active SchoolCouncil. Parents play very importantroles as they volunteer in theclassrooms and library, read tochildren, organize special events andcontribute to fund-raising activities.Westmount begins the year with aBBQ/Curriculum Night which bringsfamilies to the school to learn aboutthe expectations for the year ahead, as well as to socialize andmeet the teachers over a hotdog or two. In December, Westmountcelebrates the many festivals of winter by hosting a potluck dinnerto which families bring their favourite meals and share theirspecial celebrations.

All-Day KindergartenKindergarten is an exciting time and a perfect time to start thelife-long enjoyment of learning that we hope lives in each of ourstudents.  Westmount offers all-day kindergarten to its youngestlearners. In May, parents bring their children to school to experiencethe fun of kindergarten activities, and to receive materials to helpprepare the children for September.

Teddy Bear's PicnicFor students in kindergarten and grades one and two it is veryexciting to bring your Teddy Bear to school and to wear yourpajamas! While children hear stories, sing songs and have cookiesand juice, their parents hear how to support their children's literacygrowth at home.

Special Help AvailableThere are a variety of programs to support students. KELI helpskindergarten students with oral language skills, Reading Recoveryand ERI provide a one-on-one opportunity for grade one children tolearn to read and write, before the challenge gets too great andSpecial Education helps children who are working below gradelevel. Homework Club is also available after school.

TechnologyWestmount has a computer lab; several teachers on staff arecertified Media Literacy Specialists; even the most educationallychallenged child has produced a meaningful powerpointpresentation.  We continue to improve the use of technology tosupport our literacy initiatives. Westmount currently houses teninteractive white boards; we hope to increase that number yearly.

Student Life - Where You Belong

Students learn to work together cooperatively, to managematerials and resources wisely, and to support each otherand their teachers at all times.  During lunch, children canchoose from a variety of clubs, including board games,chess, drama, dance, reading, crochet, and choir. We alsohave a student-run newspaper club. After school, childrenmay join the soccer, volleyball or basketball teams, or jointhe track-and-field or running clubs. We maintain aHomework Club for extra academic support.  We havespecial lunches- pizza, hotdog, or Quizno's sandwiches.  Weintroduce chess to students in grade one and we support theLibrary Association's Blue Spruce Reading Club. OnSaturdays, boys can join the Balls'n'Books basketball clubthat also supports reading.

At Westmount the principles underlying TRIBES traininghave become the school behaviour code: we show respectfor others at all times; we appreciate our school; we do nottolerate put-downs or bullying; we engage in attentivelistening; we always do our best work. As a result,Westmount has very few behaviour problems.  The childrenare engaged in learning tasks at all times.
