WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Service for the Lord’s Day

Holy Communion

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 5, 2018

GATHERING

(Silence during the Prelude is requested in preparation for worship.)

PRELUDE Prelude to the Ave Verum W.F. Mozart/Biggs

*CALL TO WORSHIP

Let us worship God!

(Those who are able may stand.)

Give thanks to the Lord, for God is good. God’s steadfast love endures forever. Jesus said: I am the bread of life. Give us this bread always.

*PRAYER OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own goodness, but in your all-embracing love and mercy. We are not worthy even to gather up the crumbs under your table, but it is your nature always to have mercy. So feed us with the body and blood of Jesus Christ, your Son, that we may forever live in him and he in us. Amen.

(The Cross and Bible lead the procession, symbolic of the centrality in worship of Jesus Christ - the Living Word, and the Bible - the written Word.)

CALL TO CONFESSION

The proof of God's amazing love is this: While we were sinners, Christ died for us. Because we have faith in him, we dare to approach God with confidence.(Romans 5:8; Hebrews 4:16) In faith and penitence let us confess our sin before God and one another.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Merciful God, we confess that we have not followed your way.

You show us the wrong we have done, yet we point fingers at others. You offer us the bread of heaven, yet we hunger for the things of earth. Forgive us, God of grace. Speak your truth to us in love, so that we may return to you in peace, and grow more and more in grace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(Silent confession)

Kyrie (Sung responsively by the choir and congregation) Hal H. Hopson Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

(The liturgist pours water, which reminds us of our baptism, and then speaks words of pardon.)

Believe the Good News: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! *The Peace Since God in Christ has forgiven us, let us also forgive one another. The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you.

(Please exchange the peace with the words, “The peace of Christ be with you.”) *ACT OF PRAISE (Hymn 513) FESTIVAL CANTICLE

This Is the Feast of Victory

(The congregation is invited to sing with the choir.)

Refrain: This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Sing with all the people of God, and join in the hymn of all creation. Refrain.

CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

(Everyone is asked to sign the Friendship Register,

which is located on the center aisle end of each pew.)

THE WORD PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SCRIPTURE Hear the Word of God! Our ears are open. Ephesians 4:1-16 (New Testament, pages 193-194 in your pew Bible)

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

Psalm 78:23-29

Refrain

Lord, you commanded the clouds above, and opened the doors of heaven. you rained down manna for all to eat, and gave them food from heaven. Refrain.

So mortals ate the bread of angels; there was abundant food for all. The people ate and were satisfied, you gave them food to their heart’s desire. Refrain.

John 6:24-35 (New Testament, page 98 in your pew Bible) SERMON “Give us a sign!” Donovan Drake

(A moment for meditation) *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the Church.

(From A Brief Statement of Faith)

*GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Creating God … that we might see you face to face.

So as we prepare to come to the Table of joy, we join our voices with those who open their hearts to you in every time, and in every place, forever singing your praise:

(The congregation may be seated.)

Holy are you, O God, … and lead us into life with you.

Great is the mystery of faith:

8

So now we pray that at this Table, … Strengthen us to serve. Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor are yours, almighty God, now and forever.

These things we ask in the name of the one who taught us to pray, THE LORD’S PRAYER (Prayed in unison; see page 35 of the hymnal for text.) BREAKING OF THE BREAD COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE

(The people will move to the Communion stations as directed by the ushers. The celebrant will give each worshiper the bread. The worshiper dips the bread in the cup and partakes. An appropriate response is “Amen” or “Thanks be to God.” Please return to the pews, using the side aisles.)

Interested singers are invited to join in as their summer schedule allows. Contact John Semingson for additional information (615.292.5526 or [email protected]). CENTERING PRAYER: Westminster has had a Centering Prayer weekly gathering for a number of years, which has brought strength and power to many. “Be still and know that I am God,” says the Psalmist. The half hour begins with a brief passage of scripture or uplifting word from ancient and contemporary spiritual guides, followed by twenty minutes in silence, and concluding with a version of the Lord’s Prayer.
