ter A MESSAGE FROM YOUR CITY MANAGER

Welcome to Spring! This season is traditionally celebrated as a time of renewal and regeneration, and though our sunny days barely felt like winter, signs of new life can be seen in Westminster. Some changes will be small. A fresh face on a prominent Beach Blvd welcome sign. A new façade at our extremely popular Vietnam War Memorial. Some will be more noticeable, like refreshed medians along Brookhurst Street and Beach Boulevard, or our new website with a bright look and faster access to information. We also celebrate new businesses that hope to open their doors this year, like John’s Incredible Pizza at the Mall, the trendy Donut Boss on Beach Blvd, a new 7-Leaves location, and the upcom-ing food hall Streat Society in Little Saigon. A completely rebuilt Asian American International Beauty College has reopened on Westminster Blvd, and more exciting things are on the way.Unfortunately, some changes may seem discour-aging at first. As you’ve likely heard, both the Sears and Babies R Us corporations have chosen to close their respective locations here in West-minster. While it will take time, these retail shifts truly present an opportunity for renewal. Both the Mall owners and the City are working hard to ensure a positive future. Staff will be out in the community talking about plans for the Mall this Spring and Summer, and we know that together we will get closer to our shared vision for a vibrant community. The Mall is a big project, but the small things mat-ter too. We want to hear from you! You can report problems on our mobile app “My Westminster” right from your phone, or interact with us on Facebook, Instagram, and our website. Now, enjoy our Spring weather, sign up for one of our wonderful classes, and celebrate the positive changes happening in Westminster.

Eddie Manfro, City Manager

WELCOME SPRING WITH SPRINKLER SPRING CLEANINGSpringtime means spring cleaning and big opportu-nities for water savings! By performing a Sprinkler Spring Cleaning, you can save water by fixing leaks, broken sprinkler heads and malfunctioning tim-ers. Outdoor irrigation wastes the most water, so cleaning up outside will save you money and help conserve!

may indicate excessive runoff) • Visually inspect valves to ensure they are op-

erating properly • Inspect your hose and positive shut-off nozzle • Remember: nozzles are now required by

local ordinance. Need a nozzle? Give us a call! 714-548-3690

• Check sprinkler heads: • Run each cycle separately to evaluate each

sprinkler head • Replace broken, cracked, chipped or worn

components • Adjust overspray with a screwdriver

• The sidewalk and street won’t grow! So don’t water it

• Check sprinkler timer: • Replace batteries/check power source is func-

tioning properly • Check date and time is correct on timer. Make

sure you’re watering on the correct days

Unable to fix your timer or adjust your sprinklers on your own? You can call the Water Division for a free appointment at (714) 548-3690.

LIBRARYHOME ESCAPE PLAN“Every second counts during a fire. Create and practice a home escape plan so you and your family can get out quickly if the smoke alarm sounds!”

Sadly, only 18 percent of families with children age 3-17 have practiced home fire drills.

Plan Ahead

· Make a home escape plan showing two ways out of every room. Discuss the plan with everyone in your home.

· Choose an outside meeting place in front of and a safe distance from your home.

· Practice your escape plan at least twice a year. During your drills, practice escaping from different exits. Teach children to escape on their own.

· Make sure someone is assigned to assist small children, older adults, or family members with dis-abilities.

Respond Safely if a Fire Occurs

· Smoke and heat rise, so “Stay Low and Go!” Crawl and follow your escape plan.

· Close doors as you evacuate to slow the spread of smoke and fire.

· Test doors before opening. Use the back of your hand to test for heat, starting at the bottom and working your way up. If the door feels warm, don’t open it. Use your secondary way out.

· Once you are outside, stay outside. Never go back inside for any reason.

· Call 9-1-1 for help once you are safely outside your home.

If Trapped By Fire

· Close the door between you and the fire.· Use towels, blankets, or clothing to seal the cracks

and help prevent smoke from entering the room.· Call 9-1-1 and tell the dispatcher where you are in

the home.· Signal for help from a window when the firefighters

arrive.

At Westminster Nursery School the child is at the center of all we do. Our curriculum and activities are play based, process driven and child directed. Through open ended play, the children find purpose in their day, while developing the skills they need at a pace they delight in.

Additionally, we are a cooperative preschool, which presents parents with the opportunity for wide-rang-ing participation in the child’s preschool experience and development. Parents help in the classroom 2-3 times each month, can participate in various aspects of the school planning and even serve on the board.
