WHS PTO Newsletter November, 2016 Principal’s Letter Dear CHAP Parents, As we head towards Thanksgiving and our break, it is a nice time to reflect on the events of Homecoming. We would like to thank this community for the tremendous support of PTO through the purchase of mums for our students. Our mum tradition is alive and well at Westlake High School. We had a wonderful Pep Rally, football game, and a dance that was better attended than in the past few years. We would like to thanks all of our dedicated Mum Moms and our Student Council sponsors, Lauren Gehman and Andria Cheney, for making it a week to remember for our students, staff, and parents. The Class of ’96 had a blast returning to our campus as well. The end of October and beginning of November sees the beginning and continuation of many programs at WHS. Our choir and orchestra had a fabulous show with Vista Ridge on the 26th in our PAC. This group was led by Grammy winning and international leaders in these two areas. Our orchestra went to regional competition and our band has been involved with many competitions during this time period. Our volleyball, football, cross country, swimming, and tennis teams have continued their seasons meanwhile basketball officially began the start of their season. Our theater group has already had their fall show. It is a busy time of the year, but it is so rewarding to watch our students enjoy these areas of passion. Please visit the Westlake Home Page for all of our events as a campus. We hope everyone has a special Thanksgiving break this year. Steve Ramsey, Principal 1 In this Issue….. WHS PTO Presidents’ Letter

Dear Fellow Parents,

We hope Homecoming week was great fun for all!  Thanks to Student Council for working so hard to put together a fun dance for the student body.  Thank you to all who purchased mums.  Our Homecoming Mums Committee works so hard for nearly a year to have those amazing mums ready for our students.  It is a labor of love that takes more hours than you can imagine.  We can’t thank our Mum Moms enough!  Special thanks to our Admin team for pitching in on some of our work sessions this year.  They had a lot of fun, and were able to see how the sausage is made.

We would also like to thank those who are contributing to our Staff Appreciation Committee.  We have had two fantastic events so far (usually one per month) with a pizza dinner on Back To School Night and a breakfast buffet early this month.  Next month we will be treating our staff to a Thanksgiving lunch complete with homemade pies.  It is probably the most popular lunch of the year.  We work very hard to include homemade goodies each event to add that personal touch.  Our crew does such a great job of pulling of wonderful events to thank the staff who give so much to our students every day.

Thank you to all who have contributed to our No Hassle Fundraiser.  We could not fund all we do in our classrooms and around campus without these funds.  We take every dollar, and put it back into our campus through supplies and equipment.  Related, our language lab is up and running. We are working out kinks, but our teachers are very excited to consider how this will impact all of our language classes.  Special thanks to our Language Lab sponsors!

You are still able to sponsor our Language Lab or contribute to our No Hassle Fundraiser through our website www.whspto.net. Finally, thank you to all who purchase food and drinks at our games from our concession stands.  The clubs who work those stands split the profits with PTO. This is a very important way for many of our clubs to work to raise funds for their expenses each year.  Our parent and student volunteers work very hard to serve our customers at each and every game.

Thanks to them for service with a smile and a cheerful heart.  We always get amazing compliments on our volunteers from visiting fans.  Keep up the good work, and please continue to support the PTO and our clubs!

Karra Guess (Junior Parent) and Kristin Paull (Freshman and Junior Parent), WHS PTO Co-Presidents, 2016-2017

“The PTO would like to thank the many talented volunteers who spent countless hours making our 2016 Homecoming Mums. This season was a complete success and we could not have completed 1500+ Mums without you. We would also like to thank the assistant principals who donated hours to learn the process and help when they could. It really was a team effort. Now we are ready to put the profits back into the school. Go Westlake!”, Kathy Elswick, WHS PTO Mums Chair.

KENNON LYDICK — senior, flute Kennon is the Head Drum Major for the Chap Band. She has been playing the flute since 6th grade and she loves to whistle, which she has been doing all of her life. She likes snowboarding, wakeboarding, and enjoys running around Town Lake. She has played lacrosse since 4th grade. This school year she is also President of the Women Empowerment Club. SHAWN FORE — senior, trumpet Shawn is a talented musician. He has played trumpet since 6th grade and the piano since 4th grade. He enjoys composing music, various forms of art such as drawing and painting, and he is also part of a group that writes film scripts and composes music for short films.

Late fall is a busy time of year for the Westlake Chap Band. Aside from its regular duties at weekly football games, the band is now deep into competition season. Almost every week throughout the next month the band has a major competitive marching event. The directors are leading the charge through this exciting and sometimes challenging period, but there is another group of leaders on the field…

Meet the Westlake Chaparral Band Drum Majors. You may recognize them atop the podiums at football games keeping the entire band in time. It is no easy task to keep over 260 students marching to the same beat, and that is just the beginning of what they do. These students support the directors during rehearsals by providing marching instructions to the band members and making sure things run smoothly. In general, the drum majors serve as role models and leaders for the band as a whole.

Band News

MALYN SELINIDIS — senior, piccolo Malyn has been a flute player since 6th grade, but she switched to piccolo in high school and loves it. When she’s not at band rehearsals or games, she is involved in Destination Imagination, Latin Certamen, computer programming, Tae Kwon Do, drawing, and she’s completely obsessed with science. GRANT SPRADLEY — senior, trombone Outside of band, Grant is close to earning the Boy Scout rank of Eagle, he's a swim coach for younger kids, and he is enthralled with anything that involves aerospace engineering. He also loves to ski and backpack in the mountains. He has been playing the trombone since 6th grade, and you can see him in the middle of the trombone suicide line during the 4th quarter of most WHS football games.

Come on out and support our band!
