Yards of the MonthCongratulations to the “Yard of the Month” winners for May! Special thanks to our sponsor Cornelius Nursery.

To nominate a yard, please email the address and a picture, if possible, to [email protected]

TIMELY TIP FOR JUNE GARDENERS FROM CORNELIUS NURSERY June is a fun month filled with good weather for outside activities. Watching butterflies can be an entertaining pastime. Attracting but-

terflies to your garden is easy. Select foliage plants as food for the larvae or caterpillar and flowering plants to provide nectar for adults.

Butterflies are attracted by fragrance, flower-shape and color.

Choose a location with plenty of sun and protection from strong winds for your butterfly garden. A planting along a wall, building or

hedge is ideal. Add a supply of dark rocks or mass of dark pebbles to collect the morning sun for the butterflies to rest and warm up. Sink

a container full of sand or gravel into the ground and keep it moist. This will serve as a resting spot for some to drink and obtain minerals

must go by the Canyon Gate Clubhouse to sign a waiver before

their hand geometry will be active for these hours.

***Schedule subject to change, weather and other factors could

cause changes to this schedule without notice. Please check with

the onsite office for further information.

Start your butterfly bed by improving the soil. Incorporate compost

into your garden soil. After planting, mulch your flowerbeds with 3

to 4 inches of mulch. You will eliminate weeding, reduce watering,

keep the soil from cracking and protect roots of plants by maintain-

ing cooler soil temperatures.

Butterflies are mostly active in mid and late Summer, so make sure

you have lots of nectar-rich plants and flowers blooming by then.

If you plant large sections of flowers that are the same color, it will

make it easier for them to find your garden. Plant flowers that will

bloom at different times of the year and ones that bloom even at

different times of the day and night, this way you will always have

something in bloom.

There is a world of exotic butterflies out there flying freely so offer

a haven to these fabulous creatures and happy watching!

FundrAising event - BABy Bottle Blessings 2012

Pregnancy Help Center of West Houston is excited to announce that we will be starting up our Baby Bottle Blessings fundraising event. The event will run from Mother’s Day (5/13/2012) thru Father’s Day (6/17/2012). Local residents pick up Baby Bottles at their home church and fill them with change, bills and checks during the month long event. This event spotlights the extensive resources that Pregnancy Help Center provides to residents of 3 counties who are faced with circumstances surrounding a present, potential or former pregnancy. Pregnancy Test, Peer Counseling, classes for Moms and Dads, as well as limited ultrasound, and help with maternity clothing and baby items are just some of the services that the Center provides to their clients. Anyone interested in participating should contact the center at 281-578-0078, please ask for Lisa. If you happen to have a bottle out from 2011, please know that Father’s Day would be a great time to add to it and return it to Pregnancy Help Center. We would like to extend our thanks, in advance, to our life saving churches, their parishioners and congregations for their gifts. Thank you for treasur-ing life thru the gifts of your treasure.

Tools 4 Teens Program Description: This program is designed for boys and girls, 12-18 years of age. Each session identifies key issues facing teens today, coupled with problem-solving, healthy decision-making and positive goal-setting. Each student will be given a clear message of hope and personal value. With this knowledge, it is our mission to empower students with the under-standing that positive choices have positive consequences and poor choices have consequences that can have a life-changing impact.

Set on a Christian foundation, the Tools 4 Teens program teaches life-skills and character education. Within this interactive program students will learn information on current issues such as Peer Pres-sure, Substance Use and Their Consequences, Healthy Relation-ships, Anger/Forgiveness, Self-Worth, Respect for Others, Sexual Purity and Internet Safety. Testimonials will be shared by special guest speakers who have made good choices and poor choices in these critical areas.

The Tools 4 Teens program includes small group discussions and fine arts. Through our scrapbooking activity students create a book showcasing pictures of themselves, family and friends. Students are prompted to set positive goals and journal within their scrapbooks. This fine arts activity promotes positive self-reflection and serves as a keepsake students reflect on through teen years.

Cost: $215. *Includes all scrapbooking materials, personalized Tools 4 Teens book, autographed copy of Addict at 10, treasure box with “diamond”, journal, disk of all professional quality photos taken of your teen during camp plus eight hours of Christian-based instruction.

The Tools 4 Teens book will include ten photos of your teen, taken on site by our staff photographer. Your personalized copy will take two weeks to produce and will be shipped directly to you following the camp.

During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States.

With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students, the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. For more information and requirements, please contact Heather Wells by phone 281-770-3414 or by email [email protected].

Fort Bend House oF Hope - Bringing Healing and restoration to Hurting

teens and tHeir FamiliesHouse of Hope Fort Bend is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable orga-nization affiliated with National House of Hope. We are a Christ-centered non-residential program working with troubled teens and their parents. Our six month program is set up to provide weekly counseling for the teens and parents. Our goal is to be a catalyst in healing and restoration in broken families. We use a modest sliding scale and books are an additional fee. We also present F.A.M.I.L.Y. Rules Workshops for schools and other groups. This program is for any faith, culture and ethnicity in assisting parents to “parent with purpose.” If your family is in chaos, then this program is for you! This family system is designed to start with children at the age of 5 through 18 teaching authority, consequences, affirmation and being consistent and correct as parents. We have certified F.AM.I.L.Y. Rules Counselors available to assist you.

Our volunteers have been screened with background checks and approved by the Fort Bend Juvenile Probation Department. For more information regarding our organization, check out our website at www.houseofhope-fortbend.org, or contact Janeen Smith at 832-764-1123, [email protected].

Fort Bend County liBraries go green, saVe money

Fort Bend County Libraries is saving county taxpayers’ money by using email and telephone notifications rather than mailing out letters. Patrons may receive notices by email, telephone or text message about books they have requested or that are overdue. By sending out notices electronically, the library saves money on the costs of paper, printing and postage, which helps preserve the environment as well.

Library patrons can manage their online library account by clicking on “My Account” on the library’s webpage. To verify or add a telephone or email account to the record, simply go to “Contact Information and Preferences,” then “Preference for receiving library notices” and select “email address,” “telephone” or “TXT messaging” from the drop-down list to choose the format by which library information notices should be received. Patrons who opt to receive text mes-sages will need to ensure that their cell phone number is included on their library record and indicate which cell phone provider they use by selecting a choice from the drop-down menu. Standard text-messaging rates apply, based on the patron’s cell-phone plan.

Become a tutor-unDerstanD our stuDent’s liFelines

Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”

ruoK ProGramFort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated pro-gram called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the partici-pant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Acad-emy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

Fort Bend County “Leash Law”Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property

to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and

inoculated as required by law.

As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If

your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make ev-

ery effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’

When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your

dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and

your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone

while it was ‘roaming free.’

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground

without fear of attack from an unleashed dog.

Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their

property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and

free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property

where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a

substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are

at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforce-

ment of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control

program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS

The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that

animal become lost. Licensing also:

VACCINATION

Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats

because they are an important control measure for the public health

threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations

provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

PLease note - Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated

for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of

an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must

be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neigh-

do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal,

then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and

safest option.

STANLEY ELEMENTARY RAISES FUNDS FOR THE SNOWDROP FOUNDATION

Stan C. Stanley Elementary students, parents and faculty came together to raise an impressive $12,649.43 for the Snowdrop Foundation. This money will assist patients and families at Texas Children’s Cancer Center through funding for continued research to eliminate childhood cancer, along with scholarships for college bound pediatric cancer patients and survivors. Stanley students participated by purchasing snowflakes to help turn Stanley into a winter wonderland, raising money to run with the principal and a change drive. The child who raised the most money in the school received a guitar from the foundation. In addition to the money donated to the Snowdrop Foundation, Principal Kerri Finnesand and staff members delivered over $800 to families in the cancer ward downtown.

HUGGINS ELEMENTARY HUGGINS 5TH ANNUAL GALA THANK YOU!

This year’s “Denim and Diamonds” Gala hosted by Friends of Hug-gins was a success! It was held on April 14th at the beautiful Safari Texas facilities. The support from our families, friends, community members and businesses helps Huggins to be the best campus we can be for our students. Donations to this event allowed funds to be raised via live and silent auctions to purchase items for our school. The Gala Coordinator, Erin Hearon, along with the FOH Executive Board members were the organizers of this event and they deserve high praise and recognition for a job well done! Thank you for your continued support!

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAROur 2011 - 2012 Volunteer of the Year is Mrs. Erin Hearon! Erin joined us last school year and she has not slowed down since arriv-ing at Huggins! She was the chair of our Spring Gala and dedicates herself to any volunteer task asked of her. She is truly a dedicated volunteer and we appreciate her very much!

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION WEEKDuring the week of April 16th – 20th, we celebrated the very special people who support our campus tirelessly all throughout the year with a Volunteer Luncheon on Tuesday, April 17th. It was a great event to share a token of our appreciation for each of you who donate your time, skills and talents to our school. Room Moms and other Volunteers were also honored all throughout the week.

FOH EXECUTIVE BOARD NOMINATIONSThe Friends of Huggins PTO will soon be looking for nominations to serve on the Executive Board for the 2012 - 2013 school year. Please consider nominating yourself or someone who you know could become a dedicated and contributing member of the FOH Executive Board. The nomination forms will be distributed soon!
