• Western serves over 6,000 people per year in Sweetwater, Uinta, Carbon, Lincoln, and Sublette counties. Ninety two percent of our students are from Wyoming. We also host students from 20 other countries.

• Flags of 2016 and 2017 international graduates’ home countries on display over the stage area include: Brazil, China, Honduras, Japan, Netherlands, Rwanda, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom and Vietnam. The display shows the geographic diversity of WWCC students.

• We have progressed from one graduate in 1962 to nearly 450 in 2016-2017. The Commencement Ceremony is held each year in May and includes Summer, Fall, and Spring graduates. Over the years we have awarded more than 8,500 Associate degrees and certificates to students, many of whom have gone on to excel in further education and in their career pursuits.

ACADEMIC REGALIAThe origins of academic dress date back to the 12th and 13th centuries. The ordinary dress of the scholar, student, or teacher, was the dress of the cleric. Long gowns were worn and may have been necessary for warmth in unheated buildings. Hoods seem to have served to cover the tonsured head until superseded for that purpose by the skullcap.

FACULTY GOWNSThe gown for the Bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves. The gown for the Master’s degree, generally black in color, has an oblong sleeve. The sleeve base hangs down in the traditional manner. Gowns for Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees are untrimmed. For the Doctor’s degree, the gown is faced down the front with velvet; three bars of velvet are used across the sleeves. These velvet facings and crossbars are the color distinctive of the disciplines to which the degree pertains.

DISCIPLINE COLORSHOODSHoods are black in all cases. The length of the hood worn for the bachelor’s degree must be three feet, for the master’s degree three and one-half feet and for the doctor’s degree four feet. The hoods are lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree. The binding, or edges, of the hoods is to be velvet, two inches, three inches and five inches wide for the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s degrees, respectively. In the case of the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree, the dark blue color is used to represent the mastery of the discipline of learning and scholarship in any field.

CAPSThe color of the cap is black. The tassel should be black, or the color appropriate to the subject, with the exception of the doctor’s cap that has a gold tassel.Source: ACE
