NO PUBLIC VOTEPenrith Mayor Ross Fowler

says he doesn’t support Mayors being elected by the public, despite a new report suggesting it’s the best way forward.

“Council currently does not support the popular election of Mayors, as it is possible for a situation to arise, which has happened in other council areas, where the Mayor does not have the support of fellow Councillors,” Cr Fowler said.

Diesel the Labrador had to be rescued after becoming trapped in quicksand-like mud in Emu Plains.

D iesel the Labrador has been saved from almost certain death after becoming stuck in quicksand-like mud in an Emu Plains quarry earlier this month.

Th e dog had been crossing a tailings dam at the site when he fell through the hardened top layer of silt, becoming trapped and unable to move.

He was trapped approximately 100 metres from fi rm ground.

Using rescue glides to cross the mud safely, RSPCA NSW Inspectors conducted a “daring rescue” to save Diesel and reunite him with his family.

“Th is rescue was particularly tricky as the mud is made up of fi ne silt from quarry operations and is considered a drowning hazard,” said Flett Turner, RSPCA NSW Inspector.

“Th e rescue slides were deployed to distribute our

weight, allowing us to move out over the mud to Diesel’s position and free him from the silt.

“He was lucky to be discovered by contractors who were alerted to his location by his barking. If not discovered he would have certainly drowned or died from exposure.”

Diesel had been missing since New Year’s Eve but with microchip identifi cation, he was speedily returned to his grateful family after his rather sticky adventure.

O n August 29, Penrith resident John Buchtmann signed up to have his home connected to the National Broadband Network

(NBN). Five months later, he’s still waiting.“I signed up for the NBN because it was

going to save me $30 a month and deliver faster speeds than my current Optus cable, which I have never had a problem with,” Mr Buchtmann said.

“Th e fi rst NBN man to visit our house and install the boxes was fantastic. However, he quickly realised that the house had an aerial connection and that a new conduit line would need to be installed in the ground.

“From that point on, the connection to my house has been put off month after month as no-one seems to be able to make a decision on how to deal with the aerial connection.”

He said that the whole process has been very frustrating.

“I am just about ready to dig a trench and put the conduit in myself!” he said.

Residents in unit blocks are also having issues connecting to the NBN because although the cabling has been installed, additional work is required to make the buildings compatible.

As of January 5, there are 21,767 premises in NSW that have been passed by NBN

cabling but are unable to be connected due to additional work requirements.

And the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has stepped in after it was found that customers being transferred to the NBN are suff ering from unnecessary disruptions to their Internet and communications services.

In some cases, NBN Co may need to use an existing copper line to pull the NBN fi bre through the conduit that leads from the street to the premises to connect that premise to the NBN.

Th e pull through process will result in a temporary outage to the existing communications services.

Telstra, who is managing this pull through process, has been told by the ACCC that the current management does not minimise disruption to residents and that a new warning and management system needs to be implemented.

Are you having similar problems? Tell us: [email protected].

If you don’t like it, don’t buy it – it’s

pretty simple

Anyone who seriously believes the shirts in question were “profoundly racist”, a term used by News Limited this week in one of its stories, really needs to look up the meaning of the word.

So paranoid was Aldi that it pulled the stock, but I still can’t work out why.

Even in its own statement, Aldi admitted that complaints came from “a limited number of concerned customers”.

In English, that means alarms went off at Aldi HQ because a few people so attached to their smart phones that they miss most of what is happening in the world around them complained on Twitter.

In an age where customer service appears to be falling away in terms of quality, it’s amazing how many companies have decided to invest so much time and eff or t into responding to problems on social media.

Even I had to resort to Twitter late last year to fi x a problem with JB Hi-Fi because not one other support method worked.

Now good on any company that wants to improve its customer relations and its service, but to allow Twitter users to spark a nonexistent revolt against something as innocent as a t-shirt slogan is utter stupidity.

I mean after all, Aldi sells liquor. If a small section of the community

decided it was outraged by this because for whatever reason they were against alcohol, would Aldi remove it from the shelves?

I doubt it.And that’s the stupidity of all of this –

personal choice and the ability of the community to make its own decisions on taste and decency should not be eroded to such a point where the minority constantly rules.

Please, let’s stop the over-reactions, the over-correctness and grow up.

If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.It’s a pretty simple scenario.

And another thing...Th e furore over alcohol-fuelled violence

continues to dominate the headlines, though I am becoming increasingly concerned about where this debate is heading.

Yes, alcohol can at times be a contributing factor when things go wrong, but it should not be an excuse and we as a community shouldn’t be so freely blaming it for the violence on our streets.

After all, it is an individual with a brain in their head that makes the decision to hit somebody, not the bottle of beer.

S ocial media websites like Twitter are at their best when a story is breaking.

Take for example the incident at Sydney Airport on Tuesday afternoon, where a security issue forced the Qantas terminal to be evacuated.

While talk radio (traditionally the most immediate form of media) was still trying to work out exactly which terminal was being aff ected, a quick Twitter search gave me updates from those actually on the ground, experiencing the drama and the issues.

But with the good, comes the bad.Twitter is at its worst when it comes to

creating fake outrage and disgust, and what’s worse, the targets of such outrage are usually so weak and lacking backbone that they give in to the haters.

Take for example last week’s story about Aldi and Big W withdrawing a range of Australia Day shirts because they were apparently racist and culturally insensitive.

What did these shirts say that was so off ensive?

Simply, they said ‘Established 1788’.Yep, that’s it.I mean come on, wearing a Parramatta

Eels jersey would be more off ensive.Forget political correctness gone mad,

we’ve now gone into over-correctness.And while lazy mainstream journalists

were out trolling Twitter looking for a story that would whip everyone into a frenzy, other stores sell far more off ensive shirts and products – just take a walk through your local shopping centre and you’ll see what I mean.

Just on that, is it just me, or would everyone else like professional journalists to stop quoting people from Twitter as if they’re legitimate sources who are worth quoting?

Since when did unverifi ed quotes in less than 140 characters count as acceptable journalism?

Back to the topic at hand.I’m not oblivious to the fact that

Australia Day has controversy surrounding it, and I understand the debate that has occurred over the years about the sensitivity surrounding Australia Day and January 26.

But as Warren Mundine pointed out in the Telegraph this week, there are far bigger challenges facing the Indigenous community than worrying about a t-shirt that’s on sale at Aldi.

In a little more than 140 characters, here’s why Aldi got it wrongo

T he intricacies of the rich and diverse local Aboriginal culture will continue to be shared and preserved thanks to additional

State Government funding. Castlereagh’s Muru Mittigar Aboriginal

Cultural and Education Centre will receive a $15,000 grant to upgrade facilities and programs, which help to provide employment to local Aboriginal people whilst sharing the Darug culture with local and international visitors.

Th e funding will be used primarily to make facilities like the Ngarra Aboriginal Knowledge Centre and the bush tucker and culture walks, more accessible for all including the disabled.

“We have a lot of elders who we like to encourage to come and share their knowledge with particularly the younger people who both work for us and visit us. Physical upgrades will benefi t them,” said Peter Chia, Muru Mittigar General Manager.

State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres met with Mr Chia on Tuesday at Muru Mittigar to announce the organisation’s successful funding application.

“Not for profi t organisations like Muru don’t always have access to huge amounts of funding so the ability for me to be able to sort some funding for them, help them out with their programs, is very much about supporting one of the truly iconic organisations of our region,” Mr Ayres said.

“Th ey do a fantastic job of sharing Darug culture with not only local residents but

also local and international tourists, one of the great iconic brands in Penrith.”

Muru Mittigar is one of 1,315 community projects set to receive a share of $90 million through the State Government’s Community Building Partnership Program.

“Th e Community Building Partnerships are a terrifi c program that provides the

opportunity for local community groups such as youth, sporting, hobby groups and Councils to build, refurbish or maintain much needed infrastructure,” Mr Ayres said.

“I look forward to seeing the benefi ts to our communities as projects are undertaken and put into use.”

A review of local government has recommended that Mayors be popularly elected and Councils be given greater fl exibility to set

rates, but failed to address key concerns about Council borders.

Th e Independent Local Government Review Panel released its fi nal report last week, making a number of controversial recommendations to improve the effi c iency and accountability of NSW councils.

Among the fi ndings was a need to introduce popular elections of mayors, but Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler, doesn’t believe Penrith’s voting system should be changed.

Currently the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are elected by their fellow councillors.

“Council currently does not support the popular election of Mayors, as it is possible for a situation to arise, which has happened in other council areas, where the Mayor does not have the support of fellow Councillors,” Cr Fowler said.

“However I believe there would be support for the mayoral term to be longer than 12 months.”

Th e issue of Council amalgamations is addressed in the report, however, Cr Fowler says that Penrith Council’s concerns about boundary changes are not addressed.

“Th e review represented an opportunity for bolder recommendations, however, the reports fail to delve into more complex issues such as Council boundary changes,” Cr Fowler said.

“Th e reports fails to address Penrith’s

interests in reviewing the borders with adjoining Councils, [and] the opportunity to have the Western Sydney Employment Area, which includes the Badgerys Creek proposed airport site, under the control of the one Local Government Authority has not been canvassed.”

Of interest to residents is the recommendation that Councils have greater fl exibility in setting their rates.

Currently, rate increases are determined by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) and applications can be made for special rate variations.

It is proposed that IPART would still set the base rate increase but that Councils could increase rates a further fi ve per cent to address infrastructure needs.

According to the report, “Th is would result in a total increase for the average residential ratepayer of around $1.70 per week, which is well within the range of aff ordable and acceptable increases”.

Cr Fowler said that Councils should be aff orded the responsibility of setting their own rates, which is successfully done without red tape regulation in other states.

“I do not support rate pegging. Having gone through a consultative process with the community a Council should be able to set its rates, with the appropriate checks and balances in place to ensure money and resources are used eff ectively in accordance with community expectations,” he said.

Submissions on the recommendations are due at the beginning of March, however, Penrith City Council will request a time extension until the end of April to properly consider the report’s implications.

Put Mayor to vote, report saysShould local residents be able to decide who the Mayor is?

P enrith Lakes Development Corporation has indicated its desire to sell off residential land within the Penrith Lakes Scheme

after submitting a development proposal with Penrith City Council.

Th ough a masterplan for the Penrith Lakes Scheme is yet to be fi nalised, Penrith Lakes Development Corporation (PLDC) wants to subdivide a vacant block of land on the eastern side of the quarry that has become separated from the main Penrith Lakes area after the realignment of Castlereagh Road.

Th e blocks of land would be accessible from Sardam Avenue and Farrells Lane in Cranebrook.

“Th e subdivision and sale of these lands to individuals for future housing development represents the most appropriate and economically feasible management response,” said the PLDC.

“Should the subdivision and sale of these lands not proceed then the site would eventually represent an unmanaged parcel of land and could provide weed, vermin or waste dumping hazards to the local environment.”

In a structure plan for the Penrith Lakes Scheme submitted by PLDC, they indicate future urban areas near Penrith Whitewater Stadium and near two recreation lakes.

PLDC also plans to deliver 1,500 hectares of parklands that will eventually be handed over to the public once quarrying and remediation activities have ceased.

PLDC Project Director Mick O’Brien, said

that eventually, the Penrith Lakes will become an “invaluable and unique recreation facility”.

A residue block from the proposed subdivision in Cranebrook would also become parklands.

“A large 3,886 square metre residue lot is

also provided with plans to dedicate that residue parcel to the NSW State Government consistent with the Deed of Agreement between the two parties. It is expected that the NSW Government would in turn hand that land to Penrith Council for amalgamation with the existing sporting

fi elds at Cranebrook Park to the south,” PLDC said in their application.

Th e exhibition period for the Lakes Scheme proposal was held over Christmas and now Council is preparing a report on the development for a decision to be made later in the year.

Top mathematician takes the helm at UWS after retirement of Janice Reid

T he University of Western Sydney’s new Vice Chancellor is determined to see the university gain a better international reputation and

enhance its educational off erings with state of the art technology.

Professor Barney Glover has taken up his new position as Vice-Chancellor, replacing Professor Janice Reid who retired at the end of 2013 after 16 years at the helm.

An internationally recognised mathematician, Mr Glover said he is looking forward to seeing the university’s many capital and infrastructure projects come to fruition.

“We have the new library due to be constructed at the Kingswood campus this year, which is a very exciting project for students and researchers,” he said.

“And of course there is the Werrington Business Park that is already under construction and is viewed as simply stage one of the broader development of the North and South campuses.”

Mr Glover said that he has a few goals for the university that he would like to see through, including building its international reputation.

“UWS has very strong community ties and from the outset has aimed to be an accessible university, so I think it is time the university became more accessible to international students,” he said.

“Globalisation is a trend that many universities are experiencing and there is a great opportunity for UWS to build its international reputation – the university has

a great reputation nationally, but it is time to attract more international attention.”

He said that another challenge will be integrating technologies into the learning

experience such as online course modules. “We want to enhance the learning

experience and also open up the university to online learning opportunities for the

broader community,” Mr Glover said. Finding new revenue streams and

research opportunities are also high on the agenda.

Safe drivers earn discounts: 4,000 motorists save cash

M ore than 4,000 of Penrith’s motorists have made big savings on licence fees for being “safe drivers”.

As part of the State Government’s ‘Fair Go for Safe Drivers’ incentive scheme these motorists were rewarded with half-price licences when they renewed for one, three or fi ve years.

“In July 2012 the NSW Government launched the ‘Fair Go for Safe Drivers’ scheme which rewards safe motorists and encourages others to obey the law on our

roads,” said State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres.

“We all know that slowing down on the roads could save your life – it can also save you money.”

Th e scheme rewards drivers who have a clean fi ve-year record and fi gures show that it is Penrith’s women who are safer drivers than men with 2,393 women receiving discounts as opposed to 1,908 men.

Up to $81 can be saved on licences.“It’s our way of saying thank you to

motorists who do the right thing and encouraging better driving behaviour in others,” Mr Ayres said.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres encourages people to drive safely.

Vale Marshall Currie: Sad loss of a respected local icon

S t Clair has lost a true hero with the passing of Marshall ‘Nugget’ Currie, who was an icon in the area.

Th e long-time resident passed away at 97-years-old on January 4, 2014 but his memory will live on in family, friends and the community he loved.

Mr Currie served in World War II as a signaller with the 2/1 Field Regiment, an artillery unit.

He sailed out of Sydney Harbour on January 10, 1940 in the fi rst fl eet of Australian volunteers to go overseas for war service, fi ghting against the Italian and German armies in the Middle East, in the North Africa Campaign and then against the Japanese in New Guinea, where he was still serving when the war came to an end.

Th e digger became a well known member of the St Clair community, as a member of a number of local clubs and could be seen on a daily basis riding his motor scooter around St Clair shopping centre.

Each year he would march in the Sydney ANZAC Day March, from 1946 to 2008 and was recognised for his service in the local community commemorations.

Family and friends gathered to

remember him on Tuesday, January 14. “He was a true inspiration for his

courage, commitment, generosity and humour. A remarkable man,” said son, Kevin Currie.

Marshall Currie.

Uni goes smoke free: Ban now in place on campus grounds

T he University of Western Sydney has become one of the fi r st universities in Australia to completely ban smoking on its

grounds, including staff and students. “In January 2013, the University

introduced designated smoking areas as a step toward making the University smoke-free. In May that year, UWS decided that from January 1, 2014, the University would become completely smoke-free,” a UWS spokesperson said.

“Th is decision followed the University’s

review of its Environmental Tobacco Smoke Policy, and is a positive move for the health of our staff , students and visitors, as well as for the environment.”

Other Australian universities that have adopted smoke-free campus policies include Swinburne University, Edith Cowan University and the University of Adelaide. For staff and students who may fi nd the ban a diffi cult adjustment, the university is off ering help.

“UWS supports the eff orts of staff and students to make positive changes to their health and lifestyle, and there are counselling and support services available,” the spokesperson said.

Students of the University of Western Sydney welcome the smoking ban.

Naughty doctor: Penrith GP’s conduct “unsatisfactory”

A n unregistered doctor has been banned from practicing medicine for three years after it was found that he had

inappropriate relations with two of his patients whilst working as a GP in Penrith.

Two complaints from patients were fi le d to the Health Care Complaints Commission concerning the conduct of Dr Michael McKay, a general medical practitioner.

Th e fi rst patient alleged that Dr McKay failed to maintain professional boundaries with her, after he began to discuss his own marital problems and feelings towards the patient during consultations in 2002.

By the end of March 2002, a sexual relationship had started between the doctor and patient and Dr McKay let her move into his home.

Th e second complaint was lodged by a patient who alleged that Dr McKay also made romantic advances towards her whilst he was treating her condition of anorexia nervosa.

Between about September 2006 and July 2007 the Penrith doctor began discussing his personal interest in the female patient

and her personal interest in him during consultations, kissed and cuddled the patient during consultations, provided her with his mobile telephone number and told her to call him for ‘anything’ and visited her home regularly.

Th ey then started a sexual relationship before he moved into her home in late 2007.

A medical tribunal was held in November 2013 to decide the fate of Dr McKay, who didn’t re-register as a doctor when his licence expired earlier in the year.

Whilst admitting that his actions were wrong, Dr McKay said that marital problems were a contributing factor to his poor behaviour and that he is now seeking help from a psychiatrist.

“I am committed to treatment with my psychiatrist with a view to resolving the issues that are facing me and coming to terms with the reasons I allowed myself to breach boundaries with the two patients,” he said.

Th e medical tribunal found that the Penrith doctor engaged in unsatisfactory professional conduct and professional misconduct.

Dr McKay has been prohibited from applying to the Medical Council for re-registration as a medical practitioner for a period of three years.

T he courageous and inspiring paralympian, Erik Horrie, has been announced as this year’s Ambassador for Penrith’s Australia Day at the Lakes.

A rower, wheelchair basketball representative and motorsports enthusiast, Mr Horrie’s life has had many twists and turns.

Mr Horrie was involved in a car accident when he was just 21 that left him with paraplegia, however, with determination and support from his partner Michelle, he began to play wheelchair basketball.

He caught the eye of national selectors and in 2009 he made his debut for Australia as part of the men’s wheelchair basketball team, the Rollers, which won gold in a World Cup qualifi er and gold at the 2009 IWBF Oceania Championships.

A year later and he turned his attention to rowing and in 2011 as a newcomer to the sport won bronze at the 2011 FISA World Championships in Slovenia and qualifi ed for the 2012 London Paralympic Games.

Horrie had one of the most harrowing, inspiring and eventful Games campaigns at his fi rst Paralympic Games in London.

With his fi ancée due to have a baby any day and a Paralympic medal on his mind, the day after his fi r st heat, he suff ered a seizure which saw him admitted to hospital.

Having made a promise to himself that he would race and win a medal in London, the Mount Druitt resident was determined to make the fi nal, where he remarkably won silver and then learnt the news he had a new baby boy.

In August 2013, Horrie competed in the Rowing World Championships in South Korea and won gold with a dominant performance in the Arms and Shoulders Men’s Single Scull (ASM1x), leading at every split to cross the line seven seconds ahead of his

nearest competitor and set a new World Best Time. Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler, said it was an absolute

honour for the Penrith community to have such a respected and outstanding ambassador for the region and Australia.

“We are honoured to have him as our Australia Day Ambassador for 2014,” Cr Fowler said.

Mr Horrie will attend the Australia Day at Penrith Lakes event on Sunday, January 26.

MAYOR’S NEWS

ROSS FOWLER

Tomorrow night I will attend a fundraising event for victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated the Philippines last November.

I know many in our community have been deeply aff ected by this tragedy.

On behalf of Council I would like to off er our sincerest condolences to those who lost family and friends.

Council has a long-standing and very positive relationship with Penrith’s Filipino-Australian community. We are only too happy to support the fundraiser being hosted by the Philippine Language and Cultural Association of Australia (PLCAA), a non profi t organisation based in Penrith.

Th e money raised at the event will support Claretian Missionaries who are working to rebuild and rehabilitate the aff ected areas.

Help will be needed for a long time in this part of the world and I encourage our community to rally and do what it can.

Th is levy would see Penrith Valley residents paying an additional 10c on every water bottle, drink can, milk or wine bottle purchased. Th is is termed as a “deposit”, which can be redeemed if a consumer takes the clean container to new public collection points. Sounds great in theory, doesn’t it? But unfortunately the plan simply hasn’t been thought through. Th ere are a host of unintended consequences, including studies that show an estimated $300 will be added to a Penrith Valley resident’s average annual shopping basket just when they are fi nd ing it tough to balance the household budget. Th e proposals also threaten recycling and garbage collection services, as Penrith City Council will fi nd it more costly to run regular recycling collections if these containers are being taken out of the system. On top of this, there is also an increased risk to public health and sanitation caused by the hoarding and scavenging of bottles from private and public bins. Th e alternative solution is to not only continue with the current scheme but to expand on this through added corporate and public initiatives. For example, over the next 10 years, through the Australian Packaging Covenant, industry aims to invest $115 million in litter reduction and recycling schemes

across the country. Th e NSW Government doesn’t currently support a Container Deposit Levy. However, there is a concerted push from CDL supporters to get states to sign up to the program. So encourage Robyn Parker to keep doing the right thing and support your NSW residents’ eff orts in setting an example to the rest of Australia. Why the Poms lostLast Tuesday I had lunch at a well known rib and steak restaurant in Manly and they serve 1kg steaks and very large racks of ribs both with chips. Two members of the “Barmy Army” sat adjacent to me and consumed their enormous meals easily. Has this been the cricketing problem with the Poms? Too much good Aussie tucker. I must admit, I was just a bit sluggish after my lunch. Peter Townsend, South Penrith. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Jamisontown vandalismAround 14 years ago I moved to this area (Jamisontown) looking for more security and peace. Six years ago and with many eff orts I fi nished the house of my dreams, all I’ve done was with my hands, especially my front yard. On December 20 at around 6pm one of my best neighbours knocked on the door of my house to tell me that a

few seconds ago two cowards with a chainsaw had cut one of my trees, run to a ute and disappeared. I’ve always thought that the front of my house would be the refl ection of my home and living in the best country in the world this never would happen. I’m sure we live in the luckiest country in the world but an act of baseness like this happened in my house! It is incomprehensible to my family. I’ve always tried to be friendly, polite and helpful to everyone around me because I was raised with values. I just wonder why? Jealousy, envy, revenge, retaliation, punishment? Or just for fun? I hope you can help me please by publishing this incident in the newspaper, so the police offi c er Blanch from Penrith Police Station has more witnesses to complete the investigation. Carlos Dousdebes, Jamisontown. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Law change neededI reckon if Barry O’Farrell or any of these other bloody politicians got bashed things might change dramatically (From the Editor’s Desk, Weekender January 17). Paul, via email. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

A local hair stylist has been handed a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn from the best of the best.

Chosen from hundreds, Sarah-Beth Macpherson of Esteem Hair Beauty Spa in Penrith, is one of 10 Australian stylists who will take part in an exclusive two-year development program as a new L’oreal Professional I-D artist.

Over the next couple of years, she will brush shoulders with the best in the business at special industry events, attend exclusive seminars to learn from well known stylists and experience the high-pressure life of a L’oreal Professional Artist.

Th e program is intended for stylists looking to broaden their skills and experience a diff erent aspect of the industry.

“It is a stepping stone for what you want to do next,” said Ms Macpherson, who went through a portfolio, workshop and interview process before she was chosen for the role.

“It was not really something I expected to get into – it is just luck really. Th ere were a lot of cool people there, you just have to hope for the best.”

Th e program will see the local hair stylist attend events such as Fashion Week, which she would never have got the opportunity to work at otherwise.

“Fashion styling is something that I am really looking forward to experiencing. Obviously in Fashion Week stylists have to work really quickly, creating hair styles in no time,” she said.

“It is just something diff erent – not just staying in the salon all day.”

Th e program will begin in early February, when Ms Macpherson fl ies to Melbourne to meet with the rest of the team.

“Th e program changes year to year so I am going into it with excitement as I don’t really know what to expect. I know it is

going to be awesome,” she said.Ms Macpherson is thrilled to take on the

experience, learning new skills for her own benefi t but she is hoping to bring those skills back to Penrith to share them with her fellow stylists and apprentices at Esteem

Hair Beauty Spa. “Basically, whatever I learn at the seminar

days, I will come back to the salon, meet with the girls and share what I have learnt – it means everyone can get something out of it,” she said.

COUNCIL SNAPSHOTPenrith City Council has received an application to build a

new industrial facility in St Marys. Currently, 53-59 Christie Street houses a concrete batching plant, but Artazan Property Goup has proposed to knock down the current facilities and instead build a new warehouse and light industrial facility. Th e project does not include the fi t out of the building, and is expected to cost around $10 million. New car parking and landscaping would also be provided.

A new dental clinic could be opened in Penrith. Council

has received an application to convert the existing dwelling on 66 Copeland Street, Penrith, into a dental clinic.

Plans are underfoot for a new takeaway store and offi c e space in Queen Street, St Marys. Th e building at 45 Queen Street, if given approval, will be refurbished to create new, carpeted offi ce space, a residential unit and a takeaway store with frontage to Queen Street. Th e works would cost approximately $60,000.

Mirvac has approached Penrith City Council regarding its proposed expansion of its St Marys Village shopping centre. Th is would expand it east towards Queen Street, using Council-owned land. It’s estimated that the project would have a capital value of $80-120 million and could result in 1,000 additional jobs. Council is organising expert studies into the economic, traffi c and stormwater drainage system impacts of the proposal for St Marys businesses and the community. Th eir results will be reported to a Council meeting in the near future and inform the decision to either prepare a masterplan or not proceed with the proposal. At this early stage, if you wish to give your input or ask a question, email [email protected] or phone 4732 8122.

M inister for Fair Trading and Penrith MP Stuart Ayres has warned everyone with the New Year’s resolution of joining a gym to read the fi ne print.

“Th ose facing the battle of the bulge should be encouraged but there are pressures beyond the barbells,” Mr Ayres said.

“Be wary of special off ers, promotions and verbal promises as some deals may not be as good as they seem once you read the fi ne print. Take a gym contract home to read all the terms and conditions before you sign.”

Last year Fair Trading received 431 complaints in relation to health clubs and gyms, with 170 of those about cancellations and cooling off periods.

“Don’t be muscled in to signing up on the spot rather than shopping around. Visit gyms so you can choose the one that gives the best value for money, has the best facilities, service and location for you,” Mr Ayres said.

“Check the fees listed on the contract are the same as the price that has been quoted to you. Also check the administration fees for setting up or renewing your membership. Th ese are non-refundable even if you cancel the contract during the cooling-off period.”

When looking for the right gym to kick off your new health routine for 2014, ensure the gym contract has a cooling-off clause that allows you to cancel the membership in writing within a limited period.

According to the Department of Fair Trading, NSW fi tness centres are not allowed to accept pre-paid fees in excess of 12 months so you shouldn’t be asked to pay for more than a year at a time.

You might consider a three or six-month contract if it is likely you will change jobs or address.

“Check your contract to see what is needed to cancel

your membership. Even if the contract requires you to cancel in person, it is also advisable to do it in writing. Some gyms charge up to $300 for cancelling a membership,” he said.

Cover cutie: Little Levi lands himself a modelling contract

O ne of Australia’s cutest kids is growing up right here in Penrith and with a modelling contract on the way, we’ll be seeing

much more of him in the future. Two-year-old Levi Gardner from

Werrington County was one of four fi nalists in the 2013 annual Practical Parenting magazine ‘Cover Cutie’ competition that wrapped up at the end of last year.

Levi’s mum, Tennille Smith entered him in the competition for “a bit of fun”, surprising herself when he was named one

of the top four cutest kids in the country. “People would often tell us how cute he

is and all our friends would say that we should enter him in competitions,” she said.

“I always get the Practical Parenting magazine, so when I saw the competition I just entered. I wasn’t expecting [him to win].”

In addition to being featured inside the January edition of the magazine and winning a Tripp Trapp by Stokke chair and baby set, Levi won a 12-month modelling contract with Bettina Management and has already dazzled the agency with his blonde hair, blue eyes and classic Aussie tan.

I t was a busy weekend at the Sydney International Regatta Centre when Australia’s youth, junior and paratriathletes converged on the venue

for three days of racing. A record number of entries were received

for Triathlon Australia’s second National and Oceania Paratriathlon Championships, with 2013 Tri 5 National Champion Justin Godfrey and Australia’s four-time World Champion Bill Chaff ey just some of the high level competitors in attendance.

Paratriathlon (750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run) will debut at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and so the event was a great opportunity for entrants to experience high level competition.

Over 120 of Australia’s fi nest youth and junior triathletes also contested the second round of the Scody Australian Junior Triathlon Series.

Held in conjunction on Saturday was the Oceania Youth Olympic Games selection qualifying race for the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China this year in August, which attracted entries from New Zealand, the Solomon Islands, Fiji and Singapore.

16-year-old Brisbane schoolgirl Brittany Dutton scored herself a ticket to the games, after making a remarkable recovery from a stress fracture in her back that had forced her to withdraw from the Australian team in 2013.

“I’m overwhelmed, I haven’t had the best lead up to this race and I had a bad year last

year so I’m just so happy to be on the start line – you’ve just got to remain positive and get through it,” Dutton said after the race.

“So to win I couldn’t ask for anything

more. It was one of my goals and I’m just so happy to be representing Australia. To fi nally wear the uniform and the tracksuit is all I’ve ever wanted; I’m just so happy.”

15-year-old Matthew Hauser of Queensland won the male qualifi er and will also be going to the Youth Olympic Games later this year.

Complaints on the rise: Gas, electricity bills the big issue

C omplaints to electricity and gas retailers have increased nearly 80 per cent in the last year, largely due to billing issues.

Th e Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) recently released its annual performance reports for NSW electricity and gas retailers and the report card was mixed.

IPART found that total customer complaints reported by electricity retailers increased by 79 per cent from 51,092 in 2011/12 to 91,582 in 2012/13.

And residents weren’t happy with their

gas companies either, with complaints also increasing by 54 per cent, from 17,366 to 26,819 over the same period. Half of all complaints were billing related.

“Although some of the increase in complaints can be explained by improved reporting procedures, more complaints are being received and the percentage of calls being answered by an operator within 30 seconds has decreased,” said IPART Chairman, Dr Peter Boxall.

More people are also going without electricity, as the disconnection rate for people who fail to pay their bills continues to rise.

24,888 people were disconnected from their electricity supply last fi nancial year.

Complaints regarding electricity and gas bills are on the rise.

Doing it for mum: Gruelling challenge for local siblings

T hree siblings have been putting themselves through a gruelling training program for two years in preparation for 2014, the year they

will undertake the ultimate challenge in the name of charity.

St Clair resident, Paul Hill, his brother Luke and sister Tania, will be attempting to swim the English Channel in mid-August, with hopes of raising $500,000 for the Cancer Council, in memory of their mum.

For two years the siblings have been training hard, swimming daily and regularly completing open water swims in order to prepare themselves for what is to come.

“We are feeling very positive. I am

defi nitely ready for it mentally but now the challenge is getting the physical conditioning going,” Mr Hill said.

Mr Hill has given up the luxury of hot showers and swimming in heated pools in order to prepare his body for the potential 20-hour swim in water as cold as 12 degrees Celsius.

“It is diffi cult trying to fi nd water to train in that’s cold enough – especially at this time of the year. We need to be physically ready to withstand the cold,” he said.

Th e siblings have raised $24,000 through a number of events over the past two years but are in desperate need of sponsorship.

Visit www.hillfamilychannelswim.com or email [email protected] for more information on sponsorship packages available.

The Hill family are training hard for their upcoming English Channel Swim.

Fun and professional: New dance academy has it all

P enrith’s newest dance academy, Velocity Performing Arts, is set to create world-class dancers in the years to come.

Th e new studio, located at 55-61 York Road, is a dream come true for 23-year-old owner, Lauren Bartlett, who has always wanted to share her talent with others.

Th e professional dancer and assistant director of LOcREaDO Dance Company, has been dancing for as long as she can remember.

“I want to create a studio and atmosphere where I can accommodate both for students who just want to have fun and also for those who want to have a career in dance,” she said.

“Because I have a career in dance myself, I can guide them and connect them with the right people, giving them the best opportunities.”

Th e academy teaches a wide variety of styles, from ballet, jazz and tap to musical theatre and hip hop, to all ages.

All teachers are industry professionals with a lifetime of experience and knowledge to share with students.

“We believe in not only creating great dancers, but great people as well. Dance instils discipline, independence and confi dence in a person – these are the traits we hope to guide our students towards,” Ms Bartlett said.

Focus and attention: Invogue produces quality dancers

I nvogue Dance Studios is the premier studio for soloists, specialising in nurturing the dancer who wants to embrace the stage alone.

Invogue Dance Studios originated 18-years-ago with Miss Paula Zaiter at its head and was taken over in 2005 by Miss Lisa-Maree Leibrandt, who has been Principal ever since.

Th e school, nestled in Luddenham village, focuses on developing the individual dancer with their individualised Dance Programs and keeps to a minimal amount of students, ensuring that every child can be corrected and taught, achieving their personal best.

Th e School just held its 18th Annual

Concert at the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre and is proud to create soloists who gain paid scholarships into tertiary dance schools all over the Country.

“We employ one Syllabus that includes examinations at the studio in late August. Th is fabulous system of training encompasses all genres of dance, from early foundation styles to the very latest moves,” said Principal, Miss Lisa.

Classical ballet, tap/street tap, jazz/jazz moves, funk, hiphop, pre-school, national character, contemporary and modern dance are all Australian Teachers of Dancing Syllabi employed by the school.

Th e school caters for any child over the age of three.

Students at Invogue Dance Studios go on to great careers.

WOMEN’SBUSINESS

Michael Todd – Small Business Connect Advisor, Penrith Valley BEC.

YOURBUSINESS

T he future is very bright out west. It’s only the second week back at work in my offi ce for 2014 but the interactions we have had with our Penrith City Council, local businesses and

citizens have lifted my heavily biased and already positive opinion even further.

We are getting so many more opportunities, resources and recreation facilities at a rapid rate so we really can have that balanced and fun lifestyle here locally.

Th e Penrith and St Marys CBDs are continually developing and growing, much to the eff orts of our own Penrith CBD Corporation and the St Marys Town Centre Management.

For businesses, the Business Enterprise Centre is available for fully subsidised business advice, helping over 700 businesses annually in all areas of operating a business from start up to selling a business and missing nothing in between.

We have a thriving networking community, just search online ‘networking Penrith’. Our Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce is in its 87th year of operation and still providing a high quality of networking opportunity. Th e Penrith Small Business Network caters to the home-based, micro and small businesses, and Gen YQ, also a not-for-profi t, is making sure the 18 to 35-year-olds are valued and not forgotten by providing them with a chance to network in an atmosphere they appreciate.

Th ere is ample training and education available and there is lots of help for the disabled, and assistance and charities for the homeless. All the opportunity we need is here, and it is developing by the day.

Bright future

S ome business owners can be categorised as ‘working for themselves’. Th at is, they have chosen to create their own job and workplace, rather than be employed by someone else.

Th ey are not seeking to ‘change the world’ but are very happy being their own boss.

Other business owners can be better defi ned as entrepreneurs, which “is someone who is always thinking [she] can do things a diff erent, better way... and sees them diff erently than other people do” (Sam Zell, Chairman of Equity Group Investments).

When you read those two descriptions, you will know which one describes you. Neither is ‘right’ or ‘better’, and to a large degree, you won’t have a lot of choice as to which type of business owner you are. Th at is, if you are an entrepreneur, you will think as Sam Zell has described: your automatic response will be to see ways that something can be improved.

Th is trait does come with a downside: entrepreneurs are often viewed as arrogant. And it IS a fi ne line: just because you think (or know!) that there is a more effi c ient way, doesn’t mean people are ready to hear that. At best, you need to fi nd a tactful way to make suggestions.

Although it can be frustrating, the best course of action is to channel that energy into the things you can control, and showing the end product as proof. Most people are not going to ‘see’ the vision you have, either for something new or how your method is going to change current outcomes. Where you do need to get stakeholders on board in order to progress your ideas, make sure you provide concrete examples of benefi ts and outcomes.

T he NSW State Government has recently announced a range of initiatives for industry growth with a strong focus on industry development in western Sydney. Th is is greatly

welcomed by the PBA as we have been strongly advocating for Government to direct its attention to our region which is now regarded as an economic powerhouse not only in NSW but all of Australia. Th e Government has proposed 34 priority actions for delivery with industry in 2014, including targeted initiatives for priority NSW sectors, regional NSW and western Sydney. One of these actions provides for a $1.4 million Supply Chain Accelerator pilot program, including an advanced manufacturing pilot in western Sydney. A further $1.6 million will be made available to support the International Engagement Strategy, which includes the pilot for a new Export Accelerator program to build capacity for NSW exporters with high growth potential. Of great interest to us is a $1.5 million initiative to roll-out Smart Work Hub (tele-working) pilots on the Central Coast and in western Sydney. PBA has already commissioned some work in this area to better understand the opportunities and market for tele-work and is partnering with Council to provide an expression of interest for such a hub to be created in Penrith. Another key priority centres around Knowledge Hubs led by industry in fi ve key sectors (Creative Digital, Energy, Financial Services, MedTech, and Transport, Logistics & Rail) to boost industry competitiveness. PBA is planning a workshop with Department of Industry and Investment staff in February.

TAKE ASWING!

W hen it comes to staying active, golf is one of the best sports to be involved in. And the sport is very inclusive of senior players who still like to keep on

top of their game. Golf NSW has recognised senior golf and

developed a number of events specifi cally for seniors – both men and women.

Th e premier event is the NSW Seniors Championship, which is over 54 holes and runs in March each year for the men and April each year for the women.

Th ere is also a series of events held throughout the year that constitute the annual NSW Senior Order of Merit. Run by individual clubs, points are awarded based on players’ results and the accumulation of these points determines the

players ‘Golf NSW Senior Order of Merit’. It is a fantastic competition for both men and women that encourages competitive golf and allows seniors to visit many clubs across Sydney.

Th e Women’s Senior Order of Merit is open to female amateur golfers, 50 years of age and over, who hold a current Australian or overseas equivalent handicap, and who have a handicap of 28 and under.

Th e Men’s Senior Order of Merit is open to male amateur golfers, 55 years of age and over, who hold a current Australian or overseas equivalent handicap.

Female and male players are required to register with Golf NSW to participate.

For those of you who feel that these days you might be able to take on the Great White Shark,

Greg Norman, there are also representative competitions for senior players chosen to represent Golf NSW.

Th ere’s the Australian Seniors Teams Event run in conjunction with the Australian Senior Championship, where a team of four represent each State and Territory.

And there’s the Interstate Senior Teams Challenge where a team of up to seven from NSW, Victoria and Queensland compete for the ‘Walking Stick trophy’, which is run on a rotational basis in conjunction with the States’ senior championships.

But if you are looking for something more social, why not join a golfi ng association? Th e Veteran Women Golfer’s Association of NSW is a voluntary organisation formed in 1950.

T hings can get sticky in the summer. And, as we get older we are generally more vulnerable to the heat. However, there’s some

simple things you can do to keep cool and safe over summer, including:• Drink plenty of fl u ids Th e best time to consume fl uids is

before you are thirsty as by the time you are thirsty, your body is already dehydrated. It’s best to drink on a schedule when it is hot outside. Also, avoid too many drinks containing caff eine or alcohol. Th ese types of drinks stimulate the production of urine thereby promoting dehydration.

• Shaded activities Plan outdoor activities for cooler

early morning hours, between 11am and 3pm is the hottest part of the day. Opening doors or windows can also let a breeze through if air conditioning isn’t accessible. You may even like to consider visiting or volunteering at a place with air conditioning on hot days.

• Cool clothing Wear lightweight and loose fi tting

clothes. Lighter colours and cotton materials are best for warm weather. When outdoors during the heat, wear sunscreen that has a minimum SPF of 30+ or 50+ while also donning a wide-brimmed hat or an umbrella to protect from overexposure to the sun.

• Avoid strenuous activity Heat exhaustion is a warning that your

body cannot cool itself. Symptoms include thirst, dizziness, weakness, poor coordination, nausea and sweating. Th e body temperature stays normal, but the skin feels cold and clammy and pulse can be normal or raised. If this is the case, rest in a cool place, drink plenty of fl uids and take a cool shower or sponge bath. Th i s condition can turn into heatstroke, so if you do not feel better quickly, seek medical care as soon as you possibly can.

• Check on elderly loved ones or friends Neighbours, friends or family should

check in on other people in their homes to make sure they are not suff ering from the heat.

• Talk to your doctor if you have a health condition

If you have a chronic medical condition, talk with your doctor about additional precautions you should take to prevent heat related illness. Some conditions and medications may place you at higher risk.

Beat the heat this summer

Property boost: Plan to build more social housing in Penrith

A nglican Retirement Villages (ARV) has submitted a proposal to Penrith Council to supply Penrith with much-needed

seniors social housing. ARV hopes to build 20 seniors social

housing units on the currently vacant block at 201-203 Derby Street, Penrith.

Th e units will be aligned along the eastern and western sides of the property, with a common pedestrian path located through the centre of the site.

With approximately 300 pensioners

living with rental assistance in Penrith, there is a great need locally for seniors social housing.

According to documents accompanying the development application, “ARV has identifi ed a need for seniors social housing in the Penrith LGA to accommodate persons at risk of homelessness over the age of 65 on a rental basis”.

Th e social housing for seniors would provide close access to local shops and medical centres as well as facilities on site such as a shared vegetable garden.

Constructions has already commenced on a new ARV village in Caddens, which will eventually comprise 164 villas.

The site at Derby Street. Inset: the proposed seniors social housing.

Heat-stress indicator: New plan to help elderly residents

A new heatwave service designed by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is set to reduce the risk of heat stress in local seniors.

Th e service is designed to anticipate the impacts of heat-stress by measuring the excess heat in the air, which experts say is a better indicator of the risk of heat stress than temperature forecasts alone.

“Severe and extreme heatwaves pose signifi cant risks to human health and safety, in particular the elderly who are more vulnerable to the eff ects of heat

stress,” said BOM Assistant Director for Weather Services, Alasdair Hainsworth.

“Th e pilot service uses a heatwave intensity index that assesses the build up of heat over a period of time, taking into account the long-term climate of a location and the maximum and minimum temperatures leading up to a heatwave.”

Th e new service will map the intensity of heatwave events, showing trends and allowing for more accurate forecasts.

Th ese forecasts will allow seniors to plan their action long before a heatwave hits.

For more information on how to access the new service, head to the Bureau of Meteorology’s website.

Heat-stress can be a big issue for the elderly.

THE EYES HAVE IT

A n eye test with a diff erence is being used by local optometrists at Penrith Spectacles, allowing specialists to prescribe the best vision solution possible

to those with less than perfect eyesight.Th e human eye is one of the most complex

systems in the body, where the smallest imperfection can lead to uncomfortable and distorted vision.

Vision tests have long been used to recognise and diagnose these imperfections, allowing specialists to prescribe spectacles or other prescriptions for specifi c problems in order to restore a person’s sight.

Traditional eye tests are performed in high contrast black and white, simulating daylight conditions but this does not capture all the imperfections of the eye.

Penrith Spectacles recently acquired a new measuring device, the i.Profi ler Plus by Zeiss, which accurately measures how a person’s eyes behave during both the day and the night time.

Th e device detects more imperfections in the eye than the traditional method.

Using the measurements taken by the device, a unique prescription is developed by optometrists, like John Molloy at Penrith Spectacles, who can now accurately diagnose more imperfections than before.

“Th e i.Scription prescription compensates for these errors, and gives you better vision in low light conditions, and may enhance colour and contrast perception,” said a representative from Zeiss.

Th e company has developed a range of lenses for varying conditions.

“By combining the i.Scription prescription with Zeiss Individual precision lenses you know you are getting the best vision solution possible,” the representative said.

Zeiss is a world renowned scientifi c company with over 160 years of experience in developing innovative medical equipment.

“By partnering with Zeiss, Penrith Spectacles can ensure you have the highest quality individualised vision solution with the latest technology by Zeiss,” the representative said.

Penrith Spectacles is located at Shop 2, 21 Riley Street, Penrith.

LIBRA

Are you looking for employment? If you let

everyone know in person and via social media then there’s a good chance you’ll fi nd a job through a family member, a local friend or an international contact. Don’t be shy about trumpeting your talents! Retrograde Venus is stirring up problems with a family member but, if anyone can hold out the olive branch of peace, it’s you.

Have you got itchy feet? With Jupiter in your domestic zone

until July 16, many Rams are feeling restless and are keen to travel, move house or renovate. For more settled Aries, a troubled family relationship is set to improve. Saturday is sensational for study, public speaking, vigorous debate and creative communication, as Mercury and Mars bounce ideas off each other in a really fun and informative way.

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20CAPRICORN

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22CANCER

Capable Capricorns sometimes need to be reminded that there’s

a big diff erence between being the boss and being plain bossy! Th is week you’ll be given a golden opportunity to take the initiative and lead others in a confi dent and inspiring way. So aim to be persuasive rather than pushy and dynamic rather than domineering. Resist the urge to be critical on Saturday.

Jupiter (planet of good fortune and abundance) is jumping

through your sign until July 16. But don’t be a passive Crab and just sit back and wait for lucky opportunities to fall into your lap. You must proactively go out and fi nd them. So your motto for the moment is from birthday great General Douglas MacArthur: “Th e best luck of all is the luck you make for yourself.”

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22SCORPIO

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21TAURUS

Don’t spoil the potential for a positive week by being a sulky

Scorpio. And don’t blame others for disappointments or delays… the prime cause of your problems is actually you! If you take setbacks in your stride and go with the fl ow, then the next seven days will be very productive. Your motto for the moment is from fellow Scorpio, Will Rogers: “Th e best way out of a diffi c ulty is through it.”

With mighty Mars marching through your job zone, it’s a

wonderful week to take the Bull by the horns and be professionally proactive. Plus the Sun and Mercury boost your confi dence, creativity and communication skills. Relationships; whether romantic, platonic or business, are acting as a mirror and you have much to learn about yourself through your interactions with others.

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19AQUARIUS

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23LEO

Th e Sun and Mercury are both visiting Aquarius, so it’s your

time to shine. Plus gung-ho Mars is moving through your adventure zone, which gives you an energy boost and stimulates your gypsy gene. Inspiration for the week comes from French fashion designer Christian Dior (born on January 21, 1905): “Zest is the secret to all beauty. Th ere is no beauty that is attractive without zest.”

Listen up Lions… love won’t fl ourish this week unless you

face responsibilities in your domestic life. If a partnership is going through a rocky patch, then it’s up to you to swallow your pride and initiate peace talks. If a friendship is somewhat fractured, do all you can to repair it. If you are proactive and tactful then you’ll fi nd a gem shining on your path and your relationships will sparkle.

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21GEMINI

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21SAGITTARIUSSagittarians are the spendthrifts of the zodiac – you

can turn impulse buying into an extreme sport! And, with extravagant Venus reversing through your money zone until February 1, watch your urge to splurge doesn’t get way out of control. Th is week will work best if you avoid Internet shopping; drive past your favorite shops; and temporarily misplace your credit card!

Th e more thorough you are (especially at work) then the

better the week will be. Foreign shores are piquing your curiosity, but make sure any future travel plans are well thought out and within your budget. Saturday is super for travel and tasks that require disciplined mental thinking. You have a strong need to communicate your ideas… but can anyone decipher what you’re saying?

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20PISCES

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23VIRGO

Friday favours creative and spiritual inspiration, but don’t

be in a hurry to get involved with a club or organisation. With Venus reversing through your group zone until February 1, stick to solo pursuits and partnership projects. And resist the temptation to spend too much time in fantasy land. As birthday great Virginia Woolf reminds us, “you cannot fi nd peace by avoiding life.”

Prepare for a busy and productive week, where you’re

keen to get as much done as possible. It’s a terrifi c time to get your fi nances sorted, but don’t ruin your good intentions by cutting corners. Over the next seven days, the devil is defi nitely in the detail! Also, an old hope, dream or wish may need to be updated and expanded, so it’s a better refl ection of the new you and your capabilities.

FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION Brought to you by

Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fi tness an integral part of their life...

How did you get into fi tness?I was always a sporty kid, actively

involved in such a wide range of sports like gymnastics, touch football, basketball, little athletics and swimming. I enjoyed it all and did it well. Th r oughout life I remained involved in sports. Recently I decided to make a big career change into the fi tness industry and do what I feel passionate about.

Th ree top tips for good health?1. Be positive and surround yourself

with positive, supportive people, people that inspire you to be a better person.

2. Eat fresh foods and no processed foods. Anything with an ingredient that you don’t know what it is, don’t buy it. Buy your foods from the outside isles of the supermarket.

3. Exercise in any way that you fi nd enjoyable and fun. Grab a pushbike with the family and go for a ride.

A daily ‘must do’?Listening to my body. I pay attention to

how food makes me feel. I don’t like to exercise when I feel bloated, heavy and sluggish, so I stick to foods that make me

feel good. I also like to take some time every day to just stop and smell the roses – appreciate the good things around me.

Biggest health/fi tness misconception?Th at hours of cardio is the only way to

burn fat. Initially cardio training will burn fat

but after a short period of time the body will store what it needs (fat!) to get though that next cardio workout. You need to change something.

Th e FITT principle of training refers to Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type.

In order for the cardio workout to continue to show results one of these needs to change.

Other types of workouts not only burn fat but also tone, for example HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), which will continue to burn fat for hours after training and you will spend less time in the gym. Why not add weights to your HIIT training and kill two birds with one stone!

What do you consider the biggest benefi t of being fi t and healthy?

Without question, I feel good, positive and ready for life’s challenges. When I

wake in the morning I feel energetic and alive.

I have also met so many great people through exercising. Th e social benefi ts are great!

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most?

Yes, I go to the gym every day but nothing beats swimming/snorkelling at the beach.

I love the salt water!

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy.’

On days when I don’t feel like training I know that I will not reach my goal by doing nothing.

I enjoy the endorphin rush after a hard training session. After training I feel balanced emotionally, physically and mentally.

Anything else you want to say?Life is so busy these days so have some

quality relaxation time. Stop and just be.Get out and about with your kids and

enjoy being active with them. Th at way they will grow up into active adults!

Take time to stop and smell the roses life & style

FASHION FIXATIONby Katherine Tweed

[email protected] 2998

Come on men, at least look like you try!

W ith such a small range of accessories available on the market for men, it surprises me that so many choose not to wear them at all.

As a woman, accessorising is often a source of stress for me because of the sheer number of diff erent ‘things’ I can add to an outfi t.

When I am spending hours rummaging through rings, bracelets, necklaces, hair wear, anklets, earrings, handbags, toe rings and nail polishes, trying to put together an outfi t, I fi nd myself envying men.

Guys, accessorising is so easy for you – all you need is a watch.

On a recent trip overseas, I spent a few days in Switzerland, a country known for its enormous timepiece manufacturing industry.

Many people judge the quality of a watch based on where it was manufactured, with Switzerland known as the best of the best.

Everywhere you looked there were men (and women) in watches of all diff erent kinds, colours and price ranges.

I found the same sort of thing when I visited Singapore on another trip – unlike Switzerland, Singapore isn’t known for watch making, it is known for watch consumption.

Th ere was store after store full of luxury watches, with customers inside at all hours of the day and night.

Every brand, every price and every style was represented in the stores and on every man, woman and child.

Australia is completely diff erent. Yes, there are many men who love a good watch and

some who have multiple but the amount of men walking around with bare wrists is surprising.

I know that choosing a watch can be diffi c ult, especially considering the fact that there are hundreds to pick and choose from, and maybe this is why Australian men don’t bother, but all you need is one and you are set.

A watch immediately adds instant style and class to an outfi t and for those of you who don’t put any eff or t into an outfi t (yes, I know you are out there), wearing a watch at the very least makes you look like you try.

As watch trends rarely change dramatically, buying one is a lifetime investment so make sure you choose one that you can wear with anything.

• ENCOURAGE ALL MEN OUT THERE TO GET OUT AND START BROWSING FOR YOUR NEW WATCH! WATCHES COME IN SO MANY DIFFERENT STYLES BUT THIS SEASON LARGE FACES AND LEATHER BANDS ARE POPULAR.

• RECOMMEND TRYING A BLACK WATCH FOR A SLEEK AND STYLISH LOOK. BLACK WATCHES REALLY STAND OUT OVER THE TRADITIONAL SILVER.

THIS WEEK I...

I t is the start of a new year and I thought it might be a good time to again touch on business loans as I am sure over the Christmas and New Year break there has been some refl ection of what your

business might need for the 2014 year.At some point most businesses will go through the

defl ating experience of being refused fi nance. Keep in mind that banks do want to lend money, but it’s in no one’s interest to approve a loan that may have diffi culties being repaid.

As a Bank Manager myself, I’ve seen the best and worst versions of business loan applications so I thought I would share with you some tips on how you can present your business loan application in the best light possible.

Explain what you want to borrow and whyRather than asking to borrow a yet to be agreed

amount for an unknown investment, demonstrate how you plan to use the borrowed funds. Have a business plan and outline your business direction, growth prospects and profi t forecasts. A tangible investment makes a more persuasive business pitch.

Show your creditworthinessHave all your paperwork up-to-date and in order.

Have your BAS and personal taxes done. Have your bank statements and accounting documentation such as cash fl ow statements and balance sheets available. Understand the key fi nancial fi gures of your business e.g. current income, net profi t, expenses. Demonstrate how you will pay the loan back

Ideally your business can show a few years of profi t and this coupled with future profi t forecasts shows you can aff ord the loan repayments.

While we always hope that loans are repaid as the borrower intends, it’s useful to show your lender that an unplanned exit from your business wouldn’t stop the loan being repaid.

N ow summer is in full swing the BBQ is getting a severe nudge wherever you go. Th e opportunity to get out into the fresh air and relax and have family and friends over makes this a great time of year

(apart from the fl ies and mozzies, but you can’t have everything can you!).

Not only is a BBQ a fun time it is also a great time to increase your intake of fresh and raw foods. If you resist the urge to overcook the meat (burnt or charred meat is carcinogenic) and you keep the amount of meat down to a sensible level and load up the plates with masses of mixed veggies and salad; you will be doing a great service to your bodies.

Sorry guys, massive amounts of steak and snags are not manly. Th is puts the big gut on. No girls it is not the beer that does that, it is too much meat and carbs.

So, light on the potato salad, pasta salad and salad dressings and eat a palm sized portion of steak and you are onto a winner for summer. What sort of salad dressing is good? A mixture of olive oil and lemon juice or cider apple vinegar makes a great French dressing.

What foods are good for a BBQ? It will please you to know that most of the traditional ones are fi ne – just be balanced! You can have: one palm sized portion of meat to three or four large portions of salad or veggies; lightly sautéed onions – yum; avocado – yes; and hard boiled eggs if you are not vegan.

Of course you should have a mixed leaf salad with sprouts and mixed beans, sprinkled with seeds such as sesame seeds, sunfl ower seeds and perhaps a quinoa dish (you can get black, red, white and mixed forms of this). A small amount of rice mixed with a few kernels of corn and some green peas gives aesthetic appeal. Tomatoes of mixed varieties give visual appeal as well as fl avour.

Adding parsley and mint and other herbs can make an ordinary meal into an exotic gastronomic delight. Let your creative juices fl ow and enjoy.

T his year began with the usual New Year’s resolutions. Maybe we make them for fun, yet no doubt there is a serious side; our desire to put behind us the things of the past and to have life

turn for the better. Many people want to be more consistent in the way they relate to their friends or family. Th ey want better habits. Eating. Sleeping. Keeping fi t. But perhaps it’s just too hard. Maybe people are thinking, “I’ve struggled on so far – I’ll just keep going as best as I can.”

In the Bible’s Old Testament book of Joshua, God’s people, the Israelites, have come to a crucial new stage in their relationship with God. Th ey are about to enter the land which God has promised them. It is a promise from God of a new start in life. A new opportunity. A new hope. Some of the people are nervous, uncertain about what it will mean.

Th eir leader, Joshua, challenges them, urges them with some wonderful words, to turn from their old life, from things that have been unhelpful, things that distracted them from serving God. He says to them, “Serve the Lord with faithfulness… choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve… but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

Th at’s a good New Year’s resolution; “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” History has shown that wherever people have taken these words to heart, wherever they have been taken seriously, made the goal, there have been no regrets! It’s still early enough in January to say like Joshua; as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.

A good resolution

THE PHARMACIST SAYSby Martin Cominotto

Martin Cominotto, Pharmacist for Martin’s Chemist. Ph: 9673 1010. www.martinschemist.com.au

I f you’ve decided to quit smoking the three main methods you have are going cold turkey by quitting without any aids or help, using prescription medications or to use nicotine

replacement therapy (NRT) such as patches, gum and lozenges.

Cold turkey takes extreme will power and doesn’t work for most people. Prescription medication is a good option, but fi rst you must consult your doctor. I will outline how NRT products work and how you can use them to successfully quit.

Nicotine is what makes you addicted to cigarettes. NRT products help you quit by giving you a supply of nicotine without having to smoke. Over time you gradually reduce the amount you have until you are nicotine free.

Nicotine is relatively safe, especially compared to the other chemicals in cigarettes, so even if you stay on NRT products for a long time, they are still far safer than smoking.

Th e patches are stuck to your skin and work by giving you a steady, constant supply of nicotine. Th e patches come in 24 or 16 hour varieties but both are made to be worn for one whole day and night. Th e 24 hour patches give you nicotine throughout the night which can help you avoid lighting up in the morning, however a problem with this is that nicotine is a stimulant and you may have trouble sleeping. Th e 16 hour patches do not release nicotine during the night. Th is makes it easier to sleep, but may have you craving a cigarette in the morning. You can also use the 24 hour patch, but not wear it at night.

Using ‘combination therapies’ to help fi ght cravings can boost your chances of quitting. Along with a patch, you use gum, lozenge, mouth spray or an inhaler. Th is will be discussed more next week!

Nicotine patches

M any of us make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight and to become more fi t and active after too much Christmas cheer. But have you stopped to look at your pet lately? Is your dog or

cat carrying a few extra kilograms too?Do you have diffi culty feeling your pet’s ribs? Is there little

or no ‘waist’? Do you give your pet table scraps or leftovers? Does your pet seem to tire easily with activity? Does your pet keep eating so long as there is food in the bowl? If you answered YES to more than one of these questions then your pet’s diet and exercise program needs to be revised.

Obesity is the most common nutritional disorder seen in cats and dogs. Th e most recent fi gures reported in Australia claim up to 41 per cent of dogs and 32 per cent of cats are considered to be obese. Like people, obesity is a serious problem in pets and can be the cause of many health issues.

Obesity predisposes animals to a range of health problems and puts your pet at risk of many diseases including diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, degenerative joint and orthopaedic disease (DJD), joint stress/musculoskeletal pain, exercise intolerance, respiratory problems, skin problems, heat intolerance and overall a decrease in quality of life.

As with people, obesity is caused by overeating. Most obesity is caused simply because a pet eats more calories than they need. Th e excess calories are then stored as body fat. We have little control over some contributing factors like breed, sex, hereditary and age. However, there are others which we can control, these being over-feeding and exercise.

Pets who eat just one small plain biscuit is equivalent of a human eating a hamburger and a 100 gram sausage is the same as tucking into six donuts. Healthy snacks such as carrots, cucumber, celery, apple and ice cubes on a hot day should be considered to avoid your pet packing on the pounds.

H opefully everyone is still on track with their fi tness and eating goals. Remember small sustainable changes are more likely to last than extreme makeover, gimmick-type diets. A lot of these will

do more harm than good. For example, according to a Dietitians Association of

Australia survey the lemon detox diet struck a particularly sour note. Th ey have voted the two-week water, lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup fad as the worst diet for the third year in a row.

Th e SkinnyMe tea, and the Ashy Bines Bikini Body Challenge are the next worst.

Th ere’s no one-size-fi ts-all solution to losing weight, says association spokesperson Melanie McGrice, a practising dietician.

“Th e problem with fad diets is they’re all about restrictive eating patterns that you can’t stick to over the long haul. Th ey may even undermine your health,” she said.

“What you lose on detox diets, like the lemon detox diet and SkinnyMe tea, is usually fl uid, healthy gut bacteria and electrolytes.”

She says people don’t need to go on severe detox diets because the lungs, liver, and kidneys provide the function ‘every minute of the day’.

People who want to detox should cut down on highly processed, junk and prepackaged foods, alcohol and caff eine and also, be aware of foods that trigger any kind of ill feeling personally. Everyone is a little diff erent so just because friends eat something and feel fi ne doesn’t mean you will too. Learn to recognise how your own body reacts to diff erent foods.

Be wary of diets that cut out entire food groups. Diets such as the Ashy Bines Bikini Body Challenge demonise certain foods and make it a challenge to meet nutritional needs.

Save the money you would waste on the dodgy diet products that actually reduce your health.

Avoid dodgy diets

Here is a fi rst for the books at Penrith. During the preparation of playing a Club Challenge match on Th ursday night, it was noticed by a member that the main man (Gary Adnum) was not in attendance which was abnormal.

After enquiring from other members as to if they had heard from him and knowing he had been busy at home he was rung,

and conversation was: “Hi, are you OK Gaz. Yes, why? I don’t go to the club until 7pm on Th ursdays. He was asked what about bowls on tonight? Oh f@@@ I’ll be there in 15.”

Remember the Boundaries questioner closes at the end of this month. Th e main purpose of this joint initiative between Bowls NSW and the NSWWBA is to collate suffi cient objective data and information through research, consultation and feedback to enable both Boards to make informed, evidence-based decisions to determine strategic direction for the sport in NSW. Th e Sixteen ‘Areas” (Zone/Regions) which have been proposed in the Discussion Paper have been established AS A STARTING POINT and are based on measurable criteria including the Local Government Area Boundaries.

Bowls Mick Gilfoyle

Patrons at the Penrith Paceway last Th ursday night were treated to an excellent night of Harness Racing.

Favourites were the order of the night and Eye Catching ($1.90) set the ball rolling with an all of the way win in race one. Driver Gavin Fitzpatrick never had a moment of worry for the whole trip although Badador ran well on for second

In the second RocknRoll Star ($9.80) Cindy Rixon was too good for the more favoured runners, sitting behind the leader then getting out turning for home and being able to hold off the very fast fi nishing Bye Bye Sir.

Rueben Wiki ($1.60) looked well and truly beaten at the 400m in the third but with desperate driving from Jarrod Alchin it managed to pick itself up after being headed by Famousforeverannie and

get up to beat her on the post. Race four saw Lombo Final Touch($1.70) enter the winner’s list after previous placings at his last two starts.

In Pennsylvania ($9.30) was able to secure an inside run in the last 50m to get up and score from the consistent What Escape in the fi fth. Th is lucky run gave driver Rob Morris the fi rst of a winning double. Rob came out in the sixth on Icy River ($2.80) and was able to lead from the start and just hold off the consistent Dusty Delight who has four last start seconds recorded. It was a narrow but exciting win.

Th e seventh went to Kings and Glory ($2.20) Josh Farrugia. Th e winner sat back in the fi eld for most of the trip while eventual runner up Shootin Th e Breeze made an early move to lead. Josh made his move at the 600m.

Cricket: Penrith’s fi rst grade side continues to dominate, notching up another win last Saturday. Randwick/Petersham batted fi rst, scoring 172 in the one-day clash. Penrith easily reached the target, losing just two wickets on their way to a total of 175. Jordan Silk top scored with 56.

Cricket: At Howell Oval last weekend, Penrith grabbed a great win over Randwick/Petersham in second grade. Randwick/Petersham survived their entire 50 overs, scoring 5/189 in hot conditions. Penrith lost six wickets on the way to victory but got there with more than three overs to spare.

Rugby League: Th e NRL is set to appoint a National Manager of Refereeing to provide a coordinated approach to offi ciating across all levels of the game and develop clear career pathways for aspiring match offi cials, from the junior ranks through to the NRL. NRL Head of Football, Todd Greenberg, said the new position follows a game-wide review of refereeing structures and highlights the important role match offi cials play at all levels of rugby league. As part of the review’s fi ndings, Tony Archer has been appointed NRL Referees Elite Performance Manager while former Canberra Raiders coach Andrew Dunemann will also join the high performance team as a consultant to provide match offi cials with technical expertise from a NRL coaching perspective.

Canoe/Slalom: Our Olympic medallist Jessica Fox continues to get involved in the community, last week helping Penrith City Council launch its summer membership drive (pictured). She joined Penrith City Mayor Ross Fowler at Penrith Library for the launch of the campaign, which aims to get more and more people engaged with the library.

On track for fi nals: Double victory for second grade side

P enrith Cricket Club’s second grade women’s team had a thrilling double victory in the T20 competition at Whalan Oval last

Sunday. In a double header against Northern

Districts and then Sydney Cricket Club, Penrith managed to bowl out Northern Districts cheaply for 78 runs.

Mikayla Hinkley managed to pick up three handy wickets and Northern Districts suff ered a number of run outs early on that made a comeback diffi c ult.

Losing only one wicket in the chase, Amy Edgar scored 27 runs and Hinkley 25 runs to lead Penrith to a very comfortable win.

But the best of play was left to the afternoon match against Sydney Cricket Club. Losing the toss, Penrith were sent in to fi eld in the midday heat, however, tight opening spells from Penrith captain Siobhan Luczak and Edgar created pressure early for the Sydney side.

Th e Sydney side was dismissed for 82 runs and it was then a joint eff ort by Penrith’s top order, who managed to catch the total with six wickets in hand.

Maddison McCooey top scored on 20 not out with a quick 18 from Samantha Arnold.

Th e second grade side is now on track to play in the fi nals, which will be held in February.

Penrith’s second grade women’s cricket team scored two victories last weekend.

Dream come true: Penrith’s Brad Smith debuts in EPL

C racking one of the most famous football leagues in the world isn’t easy, that’s why Penrith-born Liverpool FC defender Brad

Smith’s story is so remarkable.Since moving from Sydney to the UK

at just 14, the now 19-year-old football prodigy fi nally made his long-awaited debut in the prestigious English Premier League late last month after subbing on in the fi nal 30 minutes of Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Chelsea.

Speaking on Liverpool FC’s website, Reds manager Brendan Rodgers was full of praise for the young Australian, who recently recovered from a serious knee injury.

“Young Brad is a fullback that has been out for a period of time. What he has, and the reason for putting him on, is the capacity, physically, to cope at that level,” he said.

“In terms of his pace, he’s very quick, he’s strong and powerful. At that level, that’s the type of profi le of player that you need.”

Smith said after years of dedication and hard work, the occasion was a “dream come true.”

“I’ve been working on this for years. It was my dream to try and fulfi l this and I’m absolutely delighted to make my debut,” he said.

“Th e manager told me to warm up and so I ran down the line to get ready but I didn’t think I was going to come on. But when he told me to get ready, it was a dream come true.

“It was so hard to get back from such a horrifi c injury and I’m so proud that I’ve made my debut.”

Since arriving in the UK six years ago, Smith became a dominant fi gure in the youth competition. His superb form led him to international recognition where he played a key role in England’s U17’s run to the quarter fi nals of the World Cup in Mexico.

Following his recent debut as well as his brilliant form in the youth league tournaments over the years, the teenager has since attracted the attention of Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou, who is looking for a dynamic left-back to boost his World Cup squad.

However Smith, who won the prestigious Scholar of the Year award at the end of last season, has the opportunity to pledge his allegiance to England if he chooses to. Th at decision will need to be made over the coming months.

It’s understood Smith never featured in the Nepean Football Association during his time in Penrith, instead playing most of his junior career with the Lennox Head Football Club on the NSW upper north coast.

N ew country, new home, new team – Elijah Taylor certainly has a lot to get used to.

And the 23-year-old has plenty to prove as well – saying he’s determined to make an impact at the Penrith Panthers in 2014.

“I feel very welcome – it’s a good playing group and an awesome club,” said Taylor, who started training with the club last week, earlier than anticipated.

“Th ey gave me the option to come back today (Monday) but I thought it’s a new team and I’ve got to get in early and earn respect from the players.”

Coming to Penrith was a huge decision for the New Zealand international, who was born in Hawera and played all his junior football across the ditch.

“It was a massive step. I’ve never lived out of New Zealand before and I haven’t got much family here,” he said.

“It’s something diff erent that I haven’t done before so it’s a massive challenge and I’ve got a lot of work to do here.”

So impressive has Taylor been for the Warriors that coach Matt Elliott – the former Penrith mentor – tried to convince him to stay.

“About half way through the season they asked me to reconsider,” he said.

After a fortnight training in Penrith’s sweltering summer heat, Taylor certainly isn’t regretting the move but admits the weather has been tough to get used to.

“27 is a hot day in Auckland,” he joked.“I’ve found it really hard but they say you

adapt to it so hopefully I will.”Taylor’s move to the Panthers is an

opportunity for him to reunite with coach Ivan Cleary, who joined Penrith from the Warriors two years ago.

“I understand his structures and how he likes to play the game,” Taylor said.

“It’s really simple, it’s really basic and it

puts the onus on the players. He gave me my fi rst grade debut back at the Warriors and he’s a good coach.”

Taylor said after the disappointment of last year’s World Cup Final defeat, he’s hoping to continue his representative career with New Zealand this year while at the Panthers.

Tyrone Peachey considers his move to the Panthers this season as an opportunity for a fresh start.

Peachey was a breakout player in the lower grades at Cronulla last season but is keen to become a regular fi rst grader.

“It’s refreshing – all new faces and a new start. Hopefully I can get a few games at the start of the year and start fresh here,” Peachey told the Weekender.

“My goal this year is to just be in the top 17 in round one. Th at’s my fi rst goal.”

Peachey said he was excited about the youth coming through at Penrith.

“Th ere’s a lot of players in the same situation that I am – just trying to make a name for themselves and it just seemed like a good thing,” he said.

Peachey said he was hoping to add enthusiasm and an “X factor off the ball” to the Panthers this season.

Kevin Naiqama is living with his brother Wes while he fi nds his own place to live after moving to Penrith from Newcastle during the off -season.

Th e brothers will both be fi ghting for fi r st grade positions at the Panthers this year, and Kevin is hopeful of fi nding a spot in the top 17.

“It’s a great opportunity down here. I’m still getting to know the boys but I am enjoying it so far,” he said.

“We’re just taking it week by week and hopefully things join together and we can do something special this year.”

Naiqama said he is keen to play in the Nines tournament, which takes place in New Zealand next month.

T he Gold Coast off ers what appears to be a picturesque, care-free lifestyle for a footballer but for Jamal Idris, it was anything but.

Th e 23-year-old, who started training with the Panthers on Monday after being granted a release by the Titans last week, says at times he would stare at the TV or “four walls” for hours on end, desperate to be back in Sydney with his family.

Good friend and coach John Cartwright knew Idris was desperate to return home.

“He was quite happy and told me to look after mum and come back to Sydney,” Idris said on Monday.

“Carty is one of my best mates – I love him to death and the boys are awesome as well but at the end of the day I was up there by myself.

“Th ey all had families and I was sitting there watching four walls.

“Family is massive to me and I think it is to everyone as well.”

Idris strikes an imposing fi gure while training at the Panthers gym – standing out like he always has since making his fi rst grade debut with Canterbury back in 2008.

But standing alongside players like rising star Eto Nabuli or the stocky Josh Mansour makes Idris realise he’s still got plenty of work to do to be at his peak fi tness this season.

“When I used to do weights they used to call it social weights because I used to walk in and talk to everyone but I think I

might have to start lifting now,” he joked.“I just want to play football – I haven’t

played since the end of June. I was loving it at the time too so I just want to get back on the fi e ld.”

At 23, Idris still jokes around – even with an often punishing media pack – but he’s clearly matured and is ready to play some of his best football at Penrith.

“I’ve experienced a lot in my life and I think I’m a bigger and better person for it now,” he said.

“Th e club’s got a lot of good things coming and a lot of good things in store so hopefully I can be a part of that now and I can grow and the club can grow as well.”

As for the team’s goals for 2014, Idris admits that being at ANZ Stadium on the fi rst week of October is the ultimate dream.

“You don’t play to lose – you run out on the fi eld every time thinking about the grand fi nal and thinking about a premiership,” he said.

“I’m not going to say we’re going to get it, I am going to say we’re all going to try to do it – that’s our goal.”

Idris said he will be fi t to start the 2014 NRL season despite having some minor work done on his knee, and is also keen to play in next month’s Nines tournament if the opportunity arises.

“I reckon it’ll be fun – it’s a good concept and hopefully I get a run because I just want to play football,” he said.

C ould the next superstar of Australian tennis be walking among us right here in Penrith?

Th at’s the question the Nepean District Tennis Association (NDTA) wants to answer when it holds a special day tomorrow (Saturday, January 18) aimed at fi nding the next big thing in tennis.

Th e association is opening the Woodriff Gardens Tennis Centre and will be off ering free tennis lessons to any child that turns up on the day.

“With tennis in the media at the moment, many parents are looking at enrolling children into tennis programs for the new year,” said NDTA CEO, Chris Woodland.

“Penrith is a town with a lot of talented athletes and tennis is a sport that off ers huge opportunities to good junior players.”

Tennis enters the spotlight this month thanks to the Australian Open and Mr Woodland believes there’s plenty of talent to be discovered in the local area.

“Tennis Australia has identifi ed Penrith as a key regional centre for future tennis

development, and a potential site for a new Regional Tennis Centre in the near future,” Mr Woodland said.

Free lessons will be conducted on the half hour all morning from 9am-12pm for children

aged three to 18-years-old. Th ere will also be free Cardio Tennis and

adult group lessons.Further enquiries can be directed to the pro

shop on 4721 2880.
