University, Professor James
Gallagher (PhD., University
of Illinois, 1959) made an
outstanding contribution to
Local 2278 (WOU Federation
of Teachers) and to the
union cause, in general.
This scholarship recognizes
Gallagher’s tireless efforts to
protect workers’ rights and
freedoms, including serving
on contract bargaining
teams, holding office in the
state federation, handling
local grievances, and helping
to organize colleagues at
other academic institutions.
The James W. Gallagher
Scholarship is awarded to
students who recognize
and honor the historical and
contemporary importance of
labor unions.

To apply for the scholarship, students (in any discipline) must be of good academic standing. Applicants must submit an essay for blind review by a union committee together with a title page, written according to the criteria below. Two scholarships, each for the amount of $1000, may be awarded each year, one to a male and one to a female student. Preference will be given to students who have engaged in social activism, who are union members or dependents of a union member.

state, national or international level, and• Essay is carefully edited according to the conventions of
