Across Western Žemaitija When taking this route you will become acquainted with the history of the estates of Žemaitija (Samogitia) (estates-museums, parks in Kretinga, Plateliai, Plungė, and Rietavas), visit the Mosėdis museum of rocks: the display of time boulders in the landscape park and the collection of rocks, minerals and rocks collected from different corners of the world, the unique farmstead-museum of the folk artist sculptor 0rvidas, see the largest rock of Lithuania – Barstyčiai rock, admire one of the most beautiful landscapes in Lithuania – the lake district of Plateliai. The Žemaitija National Park is home for a wealth of objects of the natural and cultural heritage. Its centre – the town of Plateliai – is situated next to the largest and most beautiful Lake Plateliai of the region, which becomes a resort place in the summer. There are lots of farmsteads of rural tourism around. The suggested itineraries are as follows: to the exhibition of Plokštainė militarism (the former soviet military rocket station), a visit to the folk artists of the region, along cognitive paths of nature and cycle tracks, yachting and boating in the lake and visit the islands (there is a yacht-club, a diving centre), an outing to Žemaičių Kalvarija (traditions and religious festivals of the Dominican stations of the Cross). 2. From Klaipėda (the port town) to Nida – the Largest Settlements of the Curonian Peninsula This is acquaintance with the most unique Lithuanian landscape, which is one of the most picturesque in Europe. Having ferried from Klaipėda to Smiltynė, you will find yourself in the national park established in the Curonian Peninsula (52 km of the territory of Lithuania) – together with the national park established in the Russian Kaliningrad Region (the Russian Federation) – the territory protected by the UNESCO. The Kuršių Nerija (Curonian Peninsula) – a narrow strip of land formed 5,000 years ago by the battering winds and the churning waves of the restless Baltic – is the most valuable complex of the natural and cultural landscape of the sea shore with its moving sand dunes planted with forest, old fishermen’s villages, which have become cosy resort places of original architecture (Juodkrantė, Preila, Pervalka, Nida). You can travel on bicycles along the cycle tracks running through the entire Lithuanian Curonian Spit along a winding path from Klaipėda to Nida, go yachting, sail in kurėnai, the old wooden sailing vessels of the Curonian fishermen, enjoy pleasures of the beach, and admire wild nature. 3. Along the Sea Coast of Lithuania Minor and the River Nemunas The present-day Lithuania Minor is a seashore area stretching from Klaipėda to Kaliningrad Region (the Russian Federation). The realm of water – the lagoon, the delta of the longest river in Lithuania, the Nemunas, and its tributaries (Minija, Jūra, Šyša and others) lend it certain singular features. In spring, there are impressive floods there. The Nemunas delta (the established regional park covers an area of 27,000 ha) is the major location of concentration of water birds in and the largest migration route from the north to the south. The bird watching and ringing station (1929) and a museum have been established in Ventės Ragas (Ventės Cape). The sea area is interesting to nature-lovers who wish to admire its variety. The seashore villages are of great interest: Mingė, also referred as Venice of Lithuania, Kintai, Ventė, Dreverna, Rusnė (an island and a small town), and the town of Šilutė. There are many architectural monuments and ethnographic farmsteads of the 19th century there. Further from the Lagoon, on the River Nemunas (Rambynas Regional Park), there is an old Rambynas Wood and Rambynas Hill (the old sacrifice hill of the Skalvians), in the vicinity there is Bitėnai where, in the printery established by M. Jankus in 1858 (currently a museum), Lithuanian press was printed and smuggled to Lithuania Magnus, next to the museum there is an open-air gallery Picture Garden of Lithuania Minor. Another interesting town of Žemaitija – Švėkšna – located farther from the Lagoon area is worth paying a visit too. There are an impressive church and the estate park, the central square of the town, and Vilkėnas mill there. One can travel on bicycle in this part of the country taking the route along the Nemunas Ring, go boating, have a rest in the farmsteads of rural tourism, and go fishing. 4. In the Heart of Žemaitija (Samogitia) The most interesting place – hilly Žemaitija (Samogitia) – starts south of Telšiai. There lie the highest hills-hillforts of this region, which protected Žemaičiai (Samogitians) from the attacks of the Crusaders in the past (the 13th-14th century): the largest and most impressive archaeological complex of Medvėgalis, Šatrija, Sprūdė and others. Impressive landscapes open from high hills. You can visit the ancient sacral places of the Balts, old town churches, an interesting town of Varniai (with its cultural and historical heritage) (the former centre of the diocese of Samogitia): Varniai Cathedral, the Museum of Samogitian diocese, walk along the old underwater path kūlgrinda, take a specially worked out cycling route, admire nature (forests, swamps, lakes) in the Varniai Regional Park, relax and have a rest near Lake Lūkstas. 5. Across Eastern Žemaitija (Samogitia) Magnificent landscapes open when you move from Šiauliai southwards, in the direction of Kelmė. Kurtuvėnai and Tytuvėnai Regional Parks: plenty of natural values and objects of the cultural heritage. In Užventis you will see the rebuilt watermill on the Venta River, which offers a nice site for relaxation and entertainment, a folklore museum is situated in the barn of the manor. Close to the town there is an old place of the former Beržėnai estate, and in Ušnėnai you will find the memorial home-museum of the 19th century enlightener Povilas Višinskis. Tytuvėnai (an ensemble of the church and the Franciscan monastery, the 17th century), as well as the town of Šiluva situated nearby are pilgrimage places. The 18th century baroque ensemble of the estate in Kelmė houses an interesting museum of that part of Lithuania and the ethnographic exhibition of the American Indians that is the only one in the country. The Dubysa, one of the most beautiful Lithuanian rivers, is meandering through eastern Žemaitija (Samogitia). Picturesque banks of the river attract those who love canoeing. The Lyduvėnai Bridge across the Dubysa valley is one of the longest (599 m) and highest (945.5 m) railway bridges in the country (built in 1919). 6. Across Žiemgala (Semigallia) Land The existing old windmills brighten up the landscape of the most fertile plains of northern Lithuania. Most of them are situated in the district of Pakruojis. The ensemble of Pakruojis estate buildings is one of the largest in Lithuania. The original arched bridge over the Kruoja River and the dam have been rebuilt there. You can visit the operating quarry of dolomite limestone in Petrašiūnai. The pride of Linkuva is the church (1500) and the ensemble of the Carmelite monastery (the 17th century). The area is renowned for its beer traditions. The towns of Žeimelis and Žagarė situated on the border with Latvia, which flourished in the 18th-19th century, are interesting because of old urban heritage (the formed network of squares, streets, and old buildings). There is a complex of two old inns in Žeimelis, and Žiemgala Museum of Local Lore is rich in exhibits. The pride of Žagarė is the ensemble of the estate buildings and an old park, and the stud farm (established in 1899) is the architectural monument of the neo- gothic style. Joniškis boasts of the rebuilt complex of synagogues. On the way to Šiauliai you will visit the famous Hill of Crosses (Jurgaičiai village). Heading from Šiauliai to Radviliškis it is worth visiting a village-museum – the exhibition of country-life of Kleboniškiai village, the landmark of which is Kleboniškiai windmill. The pearl of the cultural heritage of Radviliškis region is the rebuilt estate in Burbiškis and its beautifully landscaped park where impressive festivals of tulips are held annually. 7. Across Northern Žemaitija (Samogitia) This is the land of northern plains stretching across the Venta and Varduva River basins, bordering with the Republic of Latvia in the north. The Venta River and its tributaries lend picturesqueness to this monotonous landscape. The Venta Regional Park has been established there. The rivers are looping through it, they are noted for steep slopes with rock exposures. In Papilė, there is a unique geological natural monument – an impressive exposure of the marine period of the Mesozoic era with fossilised remnants of the fauna. Akmenė district has large deposits of limestone. An impressive panorama opens from Karpėnai limestone quarry. The largest cement plant in the Baltic States operates in Naujoji Akmenė. The old heritage of the area is of great interest: masterpieces of wooden architecture – the churches of Seda, Pikeliai, Šiaudinė, several watermills and windmills, and the old town of Viekšniai with its old pharmacy, the aviation museum, the abundance of monuments and old buildings. The swamp complex is preserved in Kamanos Reserve established in Akmenė district. You can go canoeing and kayaking down the Venta and Virvytė Rivers.
