When searching for the Leathernecks’ next head football coach, WIU didn’t have to look far. On Jan. 4, 2018, Jared Elliott, the program’s former assistant head coach and co-offensive coordinator, was chosen to lead the next era in Western football. Elliott rejoined the team in January of 2016 as an assistant coach for Charlie Fisher. No stranger to success, he assisted WIU to 14 wins in his first two seasons, highlighted by an 8-4 record in the 2017 campaign. The Leathernecks concluded the latter slate with an appearance in the FCS Playoffs -- their second trip in three years -- and were also ranked ninth in the STATS FCS Top-25 poll. In his role, Elliott coached quarterback Sean McGuire to a pair of honorable mentions on the All-Missouri Valley Football Conference postseason list (2016 & 2017). He moved into the position of co-offensive coordinator just before the 2017 season and helped Western to the 16th-best scoring offense in the FCS. The Leathernecks were also ranked 22nd in fourth down conversions, 23rd in third-down conversions and 29th in passing offense.

Elliott, who worked at Western during the 2012 season, spent the previous three years (2013-15) at Carthage College as an assistant coach and co-offensive coordinator. In 2015, Carthage averaged more than 360 yards of total offense and finished 5-5. The program improved in each of the three years Elliott worked at Carthage, going from a 1-9 record in 2013 to 3-7 and .500 during the 2015 campaign.

During the 2012 season, Elliott and the Leathernecks started three different quarterbacks (including a true-freshman). He joined Western after serving as a graduate assistant for Fisher at Miami (Ohio). Elliott was a graduate assistant in both 2010 and 2011 and assisted in coaching the quarterbacks, was responsible for film breakdown, helped in recruiting and managed the scout teams. In 2011, he worked with the offensive line and tight ends.

Elliott worked as an assistant coach for wide receivers at Missouri Southern State University in the 2008 and 2009 seasons. He conducted position meetings, film study, assisted in game planning, monitored the academic progress of his position group and ran field drills.

A native of Franklin, Tenn., Elliott was a quarterback and wide receiver at Miami (Ohio) from 2004 to 2007 and part of three Mid-American Conference championship teams. He received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and health with a minor in coaching.

Elliott and his wife Jamie have three daughters: Ava, Sadie, and Clara.

WESTERN ILLINOIS FOOTBALL at MONTANA STATE

WHAT IS A FIGHTING LEATHERNECK?: Western Illinois holds the distinction of being the only non-military institution to officially have its nickname derived from a branch of the military service. The school began use of the Marine Corps’ official nickname, “The Fighting Leathernecks,” in 1927 when then-athletic director and head baseball, basketball and football coach Ray “Rock” Hanson was granted permission by the U.S. Navy, based on his status as a Marine hero, to use the Marine’s official seal, bulldog mascot and nickname. He still remains third all-time at Western in victories with 56 in 16 years as head coach (56-60-12) from 1926-41. He posted a winning record six years and a .500 mark during another season. The 1939 team went 5-1-1 and won the Little 19 Conference championship.

NFL CONNECTIONS: Western Illinois continues its tradition as one of the top NCAA FCS programs with a pipeline to the NFL; Leatherneck players and coaches have won 17 Super Bowl Championships. • Mike Wagner won four Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Steel Curtain era.• Rodney Harrison won a pair of Super Bowls with the New England Patriots in three appearances all-time. He now works in-studio at NBC Sports during Sunday Night Football Night. • Don Beebe is just one of three players to have played in SIX Super Bowls in his career. He was part of the four consecutive appearances by Buffalo and went 1-1 with the Green Bay Packers. Beebe has one of the most famous Super Bowl plays when he raced down the field and chased down Dallas Cowboys lineman Leon Lett at the 1-yard line and knocked the ball away to keep Dallas from scoring a touchdown. From 1957-59, former WIU head coach Lou Saban had on his staff Joe Collier and standout WIU player Robert ‘Red’ Miller.• Saban was the inaugural coach for the Boston Patriots, then later the Buffalo Bills. He was the 1964 AFL ‘Coach of the Year’. Saban spent four years as coach of the Denver Broncos and would later come back and coach the Bills. • Miller, a three-time MVP for the Leathernecks, would later coach the Denver Broncos in the 1977 Super Bowl and three consecutive playoff appearances. • Collier joined Saban in Boston and was promoted to the Buffalo Bills head coach in 1966. He took the Bills to the AFL Championship game that season. He later worked as an assistant with the Denver Broncos, hired first by Saban then later Miller as defensive coordinator. He coached in three Super Bowls with the Broncos. Collier was the mastermind behind the Broncos defense known at the time as the ‘Orange Crush Defense’.• Former All-American John Teerlinck won two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos as an assistant coach and another Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts as an assistant coach.• WIU All-American Bryan Cox worked 11 years in the NFL as an assistant coach.• Mike Scifres spent 13 years with San Diego as the starting punter and was recently announced as a member of the 2017 WIU Athletics Hall of Fame Class. • Western’s all-time leading wide receiver Lance Lenoir is currently on the practice squad with the Dallas Cowboys.• Offensive Lineman Frank Winters won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers and was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame. In September 2016 he received the George Connor Lifetime Achievement Award from the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame.

2018 CHALLENGE SERIES: The Missouri Valley Football Conference and the Big Sky Conference are entering the second year of a challenge series. Last year, the MVFC won the inaugural event, 5-3, and this year, the two leagues will play each other eight times, including Western’s season-opener at Montana State.

Over the past five seasons, institutions in the two conferences have played one another 44 times. The Leathernecks won their series matchup a season ago in a 38-20 victory over Northern Arizona.

SEASON-OPENING SUCCESS AGAINST THE FCS: The Leathernecks have had great success in season-opening games against Football Championship Subdivision opponents. Last season, Western defeated Tennessee Tech 41-14 to mark its 13th victory in the last 14 openers (the only loss was a 20-6 decision at Sam Houston State in 2011).

BUCK BUCHANAN WATCH LIST: Khalen Saunders has garnered several accolades in his Western Illinois career. Last season, he was named a Phil Steele Third Team All-American and a First Team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selection, and this preseason he received honors as an MVFC preseason first-teamer and STATS FCS Preseason All-American.

The latter organization also announced its 25-member preseason watch list for the Buck Buchanan Award where Saunders joined four others from the MVFC. The annual honor is given to the most outstanding defensive player in the FCS.

PRESEASON PICKS: League coaches, sports information directors, and local media named six Western Illinois Leathernecks to a preseason all-conference team with three receiving first-team recognition. Defensively, Khalen Saunders, Justin Fitzpatrick, and Steve McShane were first-team selections while Quentin Moon was named to the second team. The honor marked McShane’s second in the preseason, as the running back and return specialist also joined quarterback Sean McGuire as a second-team offensive pick.

WESTERN SELECTED TO FINISH SEVENTH: In MVFC preseason poll, Western was selected to finish the regular season in seventh place. North Dakota State was tabbed as the preseason favorite with 39 first place votes while South Dakota State and Northern Iowa rounded out the top three.

The Leathernecks joined the three and South Dakota as MVFC invites to the 2017 FCS Playoffs. The 2017 season saw Western ranked as high as No. 9 in the STATS FCS national poll before finishing the year No. 13.

A FAMILIAR FACE: When Sean McGuire took over as the starting quarterback late in the 2015 regular season, he led Western to a pair of overtime victories at Indiana State and South Dakota State. In the last three seasons, the Leathernecks are 17-10 with McGuire under center.

AWARD-WINNING SAFETY?: The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) named Justin Fitzpatrick an award winner for his work on a short non-fiction piece entitled “More Than a Number: Sam Pryor’s Story.” The video feature focuses on Sam, a fellow Leatherneck who suits up for the University’s women’s basketball team, and how she navigated life after her mother’s battle with cancer.

Fitzpatrick will be presented with his award at the 42nd Mid-America EMMY Gala on September 22 at the Kansas City Convention Center.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK: Head coach Jared Elliott welcomed several Leathernecks to the program this past summer in 24 true freshmen and 10 transfers from four-year institutions.

Transfers: George Wahee (Norfolk State), Zach Muniz (Duke), Jared Drake (Ohio State), Derriyon Shaw (Boise State), Demetri Royer (Charleston Southern), Reno Rosene (Duke), Matt Clark (Eastern Kentucky), Laquay Brown (Coastal Carolina), Malik Burns (Temple), and Derrell Grisby (Robert Morris).

VETERAN DEFENSE BACK AGAIN: The Leathernecks return seven starters from their defensive core in Phil Steele Third Team All-American Khalen Saunders (DL), linebackers Pete Swenson, Riggs Baxter and Quentin Moon, and defensive backs Eric Carrera, Xavier Rowe, Mike Viti and Justin Fitzpatrick.

Moon was named an MVFC honorable mention in both the 2016 and 2017 seasons while Fitzpatrick was a second-team selection.

DOUBLE-DUTY: Steve McShane and Justin Fitzpatrick are not only members of Western’s football team, but are also outfielders on the baseball team as well. Both were named All-Missouri Valley Football Conference Second Team at the end of the 2017 season, and McShane doubled down on the honors as a First Team All-Summit League selection.

At the end of the 2018 baseball season, McShane posted the sixth-best batting average in the Summit League and the best on the team (.317). He manages a career .265 average in 107 games (82 starts) with 79 hits, 49 runs, and 26 stolen bases while Fitzpatrick has a career .180 batting average in 84 games (52 starts) with 32 hits and 11 runs.
