Western Band AssociationClassifications - There are five classes of bands in WBA field competition. Classification of each band is based on the TOTAL number of performers (drum majors, musicians and auxiliary) as follows: Class A - no more than 60 members; Class AA - no more than 80 members; Class AAA - no more than 100 members; Class AAAA - no more than 140 members; Class AAAAA - any number of members.
The primary goal is to support development of the highest quality in music performance and visual design regardless of size. However, there are unique circumstances under which the smaller band must function. This system is based on an understanding of the impacting circumstances which influence the size and development of the band programs within these 2 levels of development. It is intended to be realistic in the expectations and in the rewards for groups in this situation. All bands in every class will be measured against the “paradigm” for that class. The “paradigm” will be that band who achieves the highest standard. Judges will call upon their experience and their exposure to all bands within each class size.

Color Guard
I am extremely happy to have realized my dream of becoming a student at Valley Christian High School for my senior year. I am grateful to have become a part of such a wonderful school, developing a strong relationship with the Lord and sharing that amazing experience with my peers. Since coming to Valley Christian, I have felt extremely welcomed and feel like I have found my place as part of the Valley Christian family. I am in the Color Guard and have spent my last 3 summers touring and performing with the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadet Corps. This past summer we won the Drum Corps International Open Class Championships, also taking top honors in Color Guard. I would like to thank the good Lord for his guidance, along with my loving family and wonderful teachers, who have given me so much love and support along the way.
JONATHAN BAUTISTAPercussion
I started with Winter Percussion in my sophomore year, and that got me to do marching band. I played mostly pit instruments which included marimba, vibraphone, as well as the analytical percussion instruments. The first
day of practice was without a doubt very new to me and so were the people in my section. But as time went on, I began to enjoy the company of my section and became extremely close to most of them. Without them, I don’t think I would have survived a whole season of marching band. This year, I play bass drum in the drumline. To march and play at the same time was new territory for me, but with the help of my instructors and my section, I’ve been able to survive almost half a season. I would like to thank the instructors and my friends for making my experience in band memorable.

I started playing clarinet when I was in fifth grade. On the first day of band, I couldn’t wait to get home and practice. So I practiced in the car. I’d watch my brother every night when the marching band practiced, hoping that I could be part of it
someday. In seventh grade, I had the amazing opportunity to travel with the marching band to Cambodia. During that trip, I had to room with another girl. We quickly bonded over a game of hide and seek in the hotel. She realized how crazy I was, but she must have been crazy too because she is still one of my best friends today. I played clarinet my freshman year and then trombone since my sophomore year. There is so much more to say, but not enough room to say it. Marching band is an experience that I cannot simply describe with words.

When I first decided to join marching band I had no great hopes for it. I had seen my brother perform and I thought it looked cool, but to say that I was prepared for the all-day rehearsals in the hottest weather of the year or trying to march
in torrential downpour would be a hideous lie. What I did discover over time though was that marching band was more than just putting on a feather hat and twisting your body in ways it should never be twisted. Band became a place where I could have pride in the people around me. It became a place where I did not mind spending a whole Saturday because there was no place else I would rather be. I am so blessed to have been part of this activity, and I will never forget the family that I have on the field.

I love marching band because it’s about trying your very best and giving everything you have. It’s about getting up early on Saturday mornings, dragging yourself to rehearsals when you feel like you have nothing left, yet still striving
for excellence. It’s about leaving a part of yourself on the field and the adrenaline you get each time you’re under the stadium lights. It’s about that feeling after each show of being able to sing or even fly because the performance was that good. It’s about putting on your uniform and being proud of it. It’s about standing in the rain and bitter wind, but not caring because it’s all worth it. I have found a place where I belong, feel comfortable to be who I truly am, and shared countless laughs with the best people on this planet!! :) I feel so blessed to say that High School has been the best four years of my life, all because of marching band.

Freshman year. Band was not my top choice activity. Senior year. I can’t wait to see old friends, and meet new ones. Band has been one heck of an experience. I’ve made many friends because of it. It has also taught me how to be
a better marcher and a better person. My favorite memories are of my senior year section. Though we are not done, I already love all 6 in my section and I know we will have a great year. I want to say thanks to the directors for getting me into band back in 5th grade. It has been a great experience. I will miss all of the younger members as college comes. Three years in marching band has been fun, insane laughter and unforgettable memories. Pit has brought so many new friendships I can never forget. No matter if I was down or mad, band always seemed to make me smile and laugh to
my heart’s content. Especially when people get confused with my ‘twin’, Sierra. Along with band came winter percussion, being a roadie for winter guard and the many trips. Pasadena was the most memorable trip out of all the trips by far. Performing or hanging out at Disneyland with the friends I love just made it all the more entertaining. This year though, I never thought I would become section leader. Being responsible is one thing but leading others is a different story, but I will try my best and make it a great year with my fellow pitsters. Shout out to a junior higher, the future drum captain guard major!

I remember seeing on my phone “Valley Christian School” as the calle ID and hearing a familiar voice, “Bobbo.” I never expected that it wold be the beginning of something great or that I would actually ENJOY spending the
little free time I had doing work (let alone actually going outside). Whether it was learning drill in pouring rain or in sweltering heat, the bonds I’ve made with fellow band members were worth it all. Though I attend another school, I seldom feel like an outsider (except when people are talking about teachers). Band has helped me stay sane thoughout high school. Rather than sitting at a desk with my mind slowly wandering into the depths of who knows where, I was outside and partaking in an activity that I actually enjoyed. Thank you for making this experience what it was. I just can’t forget any of it.

Beginning my freshman year, Open Air Ensemble was quite the experience. All the faces stared at me when I walked in late to the first day of Open Air Ensemble camp. Nothing could prepare me for the hours of open air practice. Dying in the long hours
of exposure to the open air. I would have quit the ensemble after the first day if it weren’t for the words of an inspiring senior kept me in. “Stay another day and see if you like it”. Fortunately I stayed an extra day, and that extra day convinced me to stay for another exciting four years. Upon my friends I wish the best of luck! Now it is time for me to take my leave.

Marching band for the last 4 years was quite a journey. Now what is a bittersweet ending to my marching band lifestyle used to be somewhat of a rough start. I was not a good marcher when I first began marching in 2010. I used to be that kid who was always out of step, but the one thing is that I was and still am passionate about my craft. I remember my section leader back then taking me into a practice where I learned finally to march in tempo the day before Gonzales. Marching band gave me not only some of the best experiences in my life thus far but also some of the greatest friends a person could ask for. It can only give a smile on my face when I see myself and others around me working for a common goal. Marching will always be an unforgettable memory.

I have played music since I started piano lessons in sixth grade. I played flute in marching band my freshman and sophomore years. After spending two seasons in the Winter Guard, I decided to join Color Guard in my junior year.
Though band members still jokingly call me a traitor (cough cough Brian), I continue to play flute in band class. Band trips with close friends made the long hours worthwhile. My freshman year brought us to Disney World’s Main Street for a nighttime parade. My sophomore year, I rode a Dragonair aircraft to Beijing, where my friends Edwina, Sam, Andrew, and I experimented with dumpling Russian roulette and the Pocky game. Last year, we joined with band alumni and also students from China to march the Rose Parade. I wish safe travels for the band members I leave behind. Oh, and junior higher, you better be guard major/drum captain your senior year.
Three years ago I was a new international student from Korea. Marching band has been a really great experience for me because I could meet so many new friends. It was fun because we went on many trips, such as Pasadena and
China. China was interesting because I have been an international student here in the United States, but the trip allowed my friends to experience what it is like to be an international student as well. I’ve made many friends here, and my musical techniques improved. It has been a really good three years for me, and I’m thankful for my parents for allowing me to participate in marching band, for Mr. Wilson and Mr. Gunter for being great directors, and for my fellow band members for being so kind and welcoming to me. This year is really meaningful to me, and I hope everything goes well this season.

I am music minor who has a passion for drumming, although I play tenor saxophone in marching band, ahem, Open Air Ensemble. Along with that, I am not the type of guy to be a super band geek or anything, but rather
play instruments not usually associated with concert band stuff. I enjoy playing the guitar and piano and record my own music from time to time. Sports is another huge thing for me as I have played baseball for 10 years and basketball for 6 years. I was named Freshman Athlete of the Year at my old high school as well as MVP for baseball. I like to think of myself as a well-rounded individual with a passion for God. If you talk to me, I’m quite the philosopher who can change your views on many things. My quote: “Once you read the Bible for yourself, then your life will change.”

Although the fear of the unknown was consuming at first, I’m glad that I stuck with band through to the end. The further we got into that first season, the better I got to know those around me, and all of a sudden, band didn’t frighten me anymore. I
had become surrounded by people who were both encouraging and strengthening, and the band had become my family. Months have turned into years, and look at all the places I’ve gone! Band has taken me from Florida to China to Pasadena! However, my best experiences haven’t been because of where we’ve gone, but because of who I’ve been there with. I love you guys wholeheartedly. Not just one or two of you either - all of you. You truly mean the world to me, and that’s why leaving is going to be as tough as nails... This year will be fun run; seniors, let’s make it count!

Although this is only my second year in marching band, I feel like I’ve been in the program all of high school. Marching band in the beginning was hard for me, and I didn’t know very many people. But like everyone else who joined, I soon grew to love it,
and by the end of the year I had made many friends and even received an award from Mr. Wilson. Now I am a section leader and look forward to this great year and an exciting shot at championships.

When I started band as a lowly freshman, I never imagined that I would be where I am today. I’ve learned many life lessons and made even more friends. Through the band and the people in it, I was able to grow in my abilities both on and off
the field. Though I may question my decision to join every once in a while, looking back at all the bus rides, warm-ups, long nights, high toes, the directors, performances, leaders, and friendships, I know that this has all been worth it. This is an activity that I will look back on fondly.
Hey everyone! Joining marching band was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I remember I didn’t want to join band, but I was somewhat forced to. I told myself, “Hey, at least I get P.E. credits for doing this!” The idea of playing and marching at the same time was new to me, but I got used to it after a while and I began to enjoy band. After a month, I began to really love band, even while I was doing laps, stretching, and doing different exercises. The band eventually welcomed me into their family, and I finally felt as if I was meant to belong in the band. From Florida to China, and Pasadena to Indianapolis, I’ve done it all. I would have never persevered through band if it wasn’t for the support of my friends, the directors, and our parents. I only have one thing to say to future members: “Pick up tape, yo!”
I started Color Guard second semester of sophomore year. A couple of seniors taught me how to spin rifles and after that I was hooked. When I showed up at the first practice, I was welcomed by one of the most interesting people
I knew. Guard is a close knit group, and yet they still had a space for me to fit in. Every day had new and exciting memories that I will keep with me forever. One day that came to mind is when we all came in through every door of the rehearsal hall at the same time to freak out our instructors. The scheme failed because we all got off count. I have found a new family who loves each other. At times they can be a handful, but every family comes with those bumps and this one is no different, but I would not trade any of them for the world.

I joined marching band my freshman year after two months into the season. Though it was very difficult to catch up and the cost was playing basketball, it was one of the best decisions of my life. I made many long lasting friends, went
to China, participated in the Rose Bowl parade, and made many memories that I will never forget. Beyond this, marching band has a deeper meaning to my life. Band people were the ones who helped me in my darkest times and without them I literally have no idea where I would be right now. They have shown me what it means to care about someone and that there are people I can lean on for help. “Family isn’t whose blood you carry, it’s who you love and who loves you.” Though they are a bunch of dorks, marching band is my family. Oh and SHOUTOUT to Mr. Wilson for being the best director in the world!

I recall being in 8th grade, debating if I should join color guard, because I would be the only boy out of 25 girls. That was one of the best decisions in my life. Now, after 5 years in color guard, I can proudly say that this is my passion in life. People know me
as a young man of many words, but I feel the need to keep it short. I will end it with this: it is not about where you are now, but about the journey you have traveled and the journey ahead of you. I hope that this piece of advice will help you as much as it has helped me. By the way, I can’t wait to see all my beautiful friends’ faces as we all cry at senior circle. “We’re going today, going to play, games on the airplane, bring your candy canes, we’re going to fog the window panes”. Looking back on these memories, I didn’t know how that amazing trip to Cambodia with the high school marching band
as a 7th grader would impact me. From the seemingly never-ending Saturday rehearsals to crazy band trips literally around the world, marching band has brought me my closest friends and my fondest memories. Even further, this activity has taught me a very important lesson, find your passion and put your all into that passion. Looking back on all of the long hard hours dedicated to marching band that could’ve been used in another way, I wouldn’t change a single thing. I’m beyond grateful for this activity and all of the friends and family that made it so wonderful. “I guess this is finally the end.”

I have studied drums since 6th grade. I have performed with the marching band, symphonic band, and the wind ensemble band. Outside of band, I have also participated in ISS. I will be sending our 3rd project into space this
year as the team’s programmer. I plan to go to college and major in Computer Science. My favorite memory of marching band was the band’s trip to China, when numerous band members ate local peppers which inflamed their mouths.

My sister kind of forced me into marching band my freshman year, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made in high school. I started out on baritone sax for my first two years, and then switched to tenor sax. This year I’ve
been blessed with the opportunity of being the band’s student chaplain. I’ve met some of my best friends here in marching band, and have built bonds that will last for a lifetime. I remember my freshman year, looking up to my sister and the other seniors, and now that I am in their place, it’s easy to see that the key to a strong band all starts with good leadership. I want to thank my parents and especially my sister, Rebecca, for always encouraging me through every season. I love you. And Justin, we’ll always have Beijing. Stay Gold!
I started my musical experience with marching band my freshman year, when we did “Soul of the Tango.” I remember the super-long practices, the freezing-cold times at Gonzales, and the “double-heart” formation. That first year of band
was very memorable, and it made me new friendships that have lasted until this day. I didn’t do marching band the next two years, but I decided that for my senior year, I’d like to be a part of the band again. I’ll honestly say, I wouldn’t have gotten to where I am today with music if I hadn’t come to Valley and joined band. With my accomplishments from All-State Orchestra first chair last year, to San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra this year, marching band was, and is, one of the most fun experiences I had. I’m going to miss all the amazing friends I have made, and I will miss the times I had with the band.

I got into band because I needed P.E. credit. Marching band is fun. I play percussion. I have been in marching band for three years. I have made friends in marching band. The Rose Bowl Parade, Chinese New Year Parade, Fourth
of July Parade, and Championships are trips I went on. I enjoy pit percussion. The marching band trailer is very good for transporting equipment. The new vibraphone and new marimba are very nice additions to the pit. The uniforms are very pretty and comfortable. The spirit days are fun. The black and neon section color, stuffed animal, and Hawaii spirit days were fun. Band people have pretty dogs. I really enjoy the small black and white one. It has soft fur and large eyes. The food marching band people provide for us is very good. I appreciate the food. The Disneyland trip last year was fun.

Marching band… so many memories come to my mind when I hear those words. If you’re reading this, you’d better fasten your seatbelt because you’re in for a bumpy ride! My first day of marching band as a freshman was a little intimidating at first,
but eventually I felt welcomed by all the faces that greeted me. Now here I am after four solid years of marching, finding myself improved in every way by my experiences. From all the inside jokes from freshman year such as “do it again!” to junior year with “Water we doing?!” I have truly become a person that I can respect. Being in band taught me the importance of character, commitment, and true grit. I feel so blessed to have been a member of the band for these past four years. Now I have moved to my “next set.”

Since this is my last year in Valley, I decided to do something that no one could ever expect out of a girl like me. So I joined Color Guard for the first time. On the first day, I was so lost and frustrated with all the complicated flag works that I was about to drop. Nevertheless, the team members were so enthusiastic in helping me and they patiently showed me all the moves. After I got the hang of it, I started to like it more and more. I still remember the “horrible” day when we had to practice on the field under 110F heat. The nice thing was that we encouraged each other, bonded up and endured it together. It was not a “fun” experience, but I can feel myself growing mature. For the first time in my life, I learn about what it means by commitment, by living for others not just for myself.

I Joined band 3 years ago when I came to my first band class with Mr. Gunter. It was funny that when Mr. Wilson asked me about joining marching band I did not even know what marching band was. But anyhow I said “yes.” And then I
regretted, well, not really. Actually marching band is my first family in America. It is hard, I admit. However it is fun at the same time. That is why I have been in band for three years. I made friends from band. I play clarinet in the band although it is not my primary instrument. I am so thankful that Mr. Wilson asked me to join band, otherwise I would not have such a great family. Can I be a freshman again?

It’s funny to think that in the summer before my freshman year I was so reluctant to join marching band. I was convinced that not only was band not worth my time but that I wouldn’t like any of the other kids. Looking back, I am so
thankful that my mother encouraged me to do marching band. VCHS Marching Band has meant so much to me in the last four years. Through it I have met some of the most influential people in my life and I have gone to places I never dreamed of going.
