On Saturday, January 17, 2015, the Westbury High School Marching
Band, under the leadership of Mr. Reginald Washington, and the
Blue Diamond Dancers, under the direction of Ms. Tanya Jones,
attended a "Battle of the Bands" competition held at Memorial
Stadium in Port Arthur, Texas. Our band and dance group competed
against six schools. They were all show style marching bands. The
competitors were divided into two divisions and scored by five
judges. The Blue Diamonds won 2nd place and brought home a
trophy in the best dance category. The marching band won 3rd place
and brought a trophy home in the medium best band category. We
are proud that they represented Westbury High School well!
Health Science students Christopher Lopez, Shelsea Portillo and
Mariana Cruz began Saturday Morning Science (SMS) sessions
this month at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM).
SMS is an exciting outreach program sponsored by Baylor’s Office
of Diversity and Community Outreach. Its aim is to motivate inner
city students from the 7th to the 12th grade to reach their highest
potential.
This first session was presented by Dr. Monroe on “Type 2
Diabetes: Diagnosis and Treatment Strategies”.
Mariana stated, “It was very exciting collaborating with the Baylor
staff and students as well as the other middle and high school
students from the different schools in the Houston area.” Shelsea
and Christopher agreed, and stated they are looking forward to all
of the sessions that will continue through May.
Congratulations to the JV soccer girls team on their first game
against Waltrip HS that ended on a 1-1 tie with a goal from Maylin
Gonzales for Westbury. Keep up the hard work ladies!
Are you great in Math, English, Journalism, Science, Social
Studies or Writing? If so, then the Westbury Academic Team needs
you. If there are any scholars interested in competing in any of
these areas, all they need to do is get with their teacher, or
Dr. Thompson on the Senior campus, or Mr. Mayo the UIL
Academic Coordinator. There will
be a competitive meet in February
before the big UIL District Meet in
March. Take advantage of this
opportunity! It’s time to show all of
HISD how great Westbury High
School is.
Westbury Power Up
Power Up laptop deployment will occur this week for those who have already paid. If
scholars have not taken care of the $25 laptop fee they may do so Monday-Friday in the
business office or main office during non-instructional times. If you have any questions or
concerns, please see Mr. Strong and Get Powered Up!!!
The girls’ JV basketball team played
Westside and were remarkable. They
started with 5 players and ended with 2.
the girl’s never gave up. They played
their hardest until the final buzzer.
Westbury is extremely proud of our
courageous 5.
STAAR tutorials began this past Saturday. We had about 250 scholars to show up to get
prepared for the big test. We gave away prizes such as gift cards to Whataburger,
Subway, and Burger King. We also gave away a letterman jacket and many other prizes.
We will be here again this Saturday from 9 to 12 noon. Check in the library at 8:45am
where you will be served a light breakfast. A snack will be served later in the morning.
There will also be more giveaways at the end of each Saturday. The exam dates will be
here sooner than you think. We want to help you get prepared. We hope to see you this
Saturday.
Congratulations!! To Westbury's Auto Tech students in Mr. Lyle's class who passed their
