Archaeological Sites:

The HER holds information on a range of upstanding

archaeological monuments including prehistoric funerary

monuments and carved rocks (which are prolific on the

Pennine uplands), the remains of Roman road routes,

medieval castles, former industrial works, as well as sites

relating to WW1 & WW2.

We also hold hundreds of reports detailing the results and

discoveries of archaeological fieldwork and excavation

conducted within West Yorkshire. Highlights include the

extensive excavations of the Roman fort and settlement

at Castleford, the medieval defences at Pontefract Castle,

and the prehistoric hill fort at Castle Hill, Almondbury. All

our records are available for public consultation.

Buildings:

The HER holds records on a wide range of listed and

unlisted historic buildings in West Yorkshire. These

include churches, stately houses, vernacular buildings

such as cottages, farmhouses and barns, and industrial

buildings such as mills, warehouses and tanneries.

We also hold some of the paper archives of the RCHME/

WYMCC surveys conducted in the 1980s for Rural Houses

(1400-1830), Textile Mills (1770-1930), and Workers’

Housing (1750-1920).
