GHBC Employee Gift Fund
LIVE the good life at GHBC! THANK those who help make
it so good. GIVE generously, with thoughtfulness and love, to our
employees/friends.
For many months the video screens in our common areas have
shown us the smiling faces of GHBC employees—the food servers,
housekeepers, maintenance teams and behind-the-scenes employees.
Thanks to the talents and generosity of the video producers Peg
Bethany and Russ O’Connell, we are able to see — to “meet”— these
people who help to make our lives safe, comfortable and pleasant.
Right now, with our annual Employee Gift Fund in full swing,
it’s especially fitting to stop and smile back at those friendly faces----
members of our large GHBC family. Remember the old war-time
slogan, “Give ‘til it hurts”? How about “Give ‘til it feels good.”
Think of the many worthwhile ways that our monetary gifts are
gratefully used—college tuition, gifts for families in employees’
homelands, down payment on a car, paying for music lessons, etc.
There’s a warm feeling knowing how much our gifts, both monetary
and gifts of friendship, mean to our fellow GHBC’ers. So, please,
Give ‘Til It Feels Good. Thank you….Barbara Morris

COMMUNITY CORNER
The time has come, the calendar says for us to do what nobody can do for us. Each of us
must vote in our Nation’s election on Tuesday, November 6, if you haven’t already done so
by early ballot. It has been said that the biggest hurdle our country faces at this time is
cynicism…folks saying it’s a done deal; my vote won’t matter; I don’t know the candidates,
or I don’t understand the amendments to the VA Constitution being put forward for my support. As Colin
Powell said “You’re not just voting for an individual, you’re voting for an agenda. You’re voting for a
platform. You’re voting for a political philosophy.” Dr. Robert Jeffress, host of Pathway to Victory (a
national radio and television ministry) reminds us “ Every time we go into the voting booth, we are
choosing the moral and spiritual direction of our nation. That is a privilege and responsibility that should
not be abdicated.” As a registered voter residing at GHBC, you only need to make your way to the
Auditorium in order to cast your vote…talk about perks and resident benefits!

Become a Dementia Friend!
What is a Dementia Friend?
“A Dementia Friend is someone who, through viewing a series of online videos, learns about what it's like to
live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action. From telling friends about the Dementia
Friends program to visiting someone who is living with dementia, every action counts. Anyone of any age
can be a Dementia Friend – we all have a part to play in creating dementia friendly communities”- Dementia
Friends USA.
Goodwin House Incorporated is committed to becoming a leader in Dementia through care, education, and
awareness. All staff and residents have the opportunity to become a Dementia Friend! To complete the
online training, visit dementiafriendsusa.org/become-a-dementia-friend. The training consists of a series of
short videos. If you would like in-person assistance with this online training, please email GHI Intern,
Lindsey LeClair, at [email protected]. She is available Mondays from 9:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. and
Fridays from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS IN RICHMOND
WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE MOTOR COACH
Wheelchairs provide mobility to many people who would otherwise be quite confined. Although our GHBC
bus is equipped to handle wheelchairs, most motor coaches cannot do this.
Our trip to Richmond on Wednesday, November 14, is different. We have contracted for a motor coach
with a lift built especially for wheelchairs. Although this is short notice, if you are interested in the trip to
the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, call Carolyn Buttolph at 703-842-3177.
In the future, whenever possible, we plan to contract for a motor coach with this feature.
SAVE THE DATE
Tuesday, November 13, in the Auditorium will be the next Loren Mead Memorial Foreign Affairs talk on
The Trump Administration Trade Policy: What Has Changed; What Happens Next and What are the
Consequences for the Position of the U.S. in the World.

FAMILY TRIP
NEW RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT
Bob and Mary Bullock moved into Pointe apartment 1174 on Friday, October 12.
Bob spent his early years in Baltimore, where he attended Baltimore
City College (a public high school) for two years. He completed his
last two years at McKinley High School in Washington and
graduated in 1946. He went to Johns Hopkins University and then
graduated from the George Washington School of Medicine. He
practiced internal medicine in Arlington, VA, until he sold his
practice in 1994 and went on to work at the Rader Clinic and at the
Arlington Free Clinic. He has enjoyed playing tennis, reading, and
traveling. Both he and Mary have enjoyed many of the courses
offered through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at
American University.
Mary grew up in Flushing, New York, and attended The Mary Louis Academy. After graduating from there
in 1955, she went to the College of New Rochelle, where she obtained a degree in English. She taught
English in the Arlington Public Schools for 20 years while raising the 6 children in their blended family.
After retiring from the school system, she went to work in the Office of Public Affairs at the National
Science Foundation for 8 years. She loves music and sang with the Arlington Metropolitan Chorus for 10
years. She continues to volunteer at Food for Others, which maintains the largest food bank in Northern
Virginia. She also volunteers with the American Council for International Education. This organization
brings students from former Soviet and Yugoslav states to this country for a year of high school study while
living with an American family. Mary’s responsibilities there include evaluating student applications.
Philly is Flowering
Early next year, Philadelphia is the setting for an
outstanding flower show – a premier event. We have a
unique opportunity to attend on March 6-7 (Wednesday and
Thursday).
In cooperation with White Stars Tours, we plan an
overnight bus trip. We’ll leave here on Wednesday, attend
the show, enjoy dinner in the City of Brotherly Love, and
then spend the night at a hotel in the area. The following
day, we’ll have a three-hour historic tour that includes a visit
to the Reading Terminal Market, Independence Hall, and
other sights. Later in the afternoon, we’ll head for home.
The cost is surprisingly modest. Everything –
transportation, admittance to the show, dinner, and the hotel – is just $139 (based on double occupancy). For
those who travel alone, the single supplement will be $79.
This is a Family trip. Residents of GHA and GHBC as well as members of GHAH and the Priority
Club are invited. Although the trip is months away, we are beginning to accept reservations now. Contact
Carolyn Buttolph at 703-842-3177 (email [email protected]).

New Stretch and Flex Class Beginning on Tuesday Mornings!
Taking time to stretch is great for your health. We are now offering a Tuesday morning stretch class to
compliment the class we already have on Thursday. The class is advanced beginner and includes standing
and floor exercises. See below for reasons to make time to stretch, and join in the fun on Tuesday and
Thursday mornings at 8:15 a.m.
Benefits of stretching
1. Increases your flexibility
Regular stretching can help increase your flexibility, which is
crucial for your overall health. Not only can improved
flexibility help you to perform everyday activities with relative
ease, but it can also help delay the reduced mobility that can
come with aging.
2. Increases your range of motion
Being able to move a joint through its full range of motion gives
you more freedom of movement. Stretching on a regular basis can help increase your range of motion.
3. Improves your posture
Muscle imbalances are common and can lead to poor posture. One study found that a combination of
strengthening and stretching specific muscle groups can reduce musculoskeletal pain and encourage proper
alignment. That, in turn, may help improve your posture.
