It is an awesome feeling to be celebrating our 110 th Anniversary at the same time we are celebrating the 150 th Anniversary of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. We have made great strides in our Lodges over the past 110 years and have made great contributions to our local communities, to the Veterans and to the Youth that we serve. My theme for the year is “Increasing Commitment in Elkdom”. We have got to find ways in our Lodges to instill in our members the desire to Increase their Commitment to their Lodge and to Elkdom in general. We all joined Elks for a special reason. Many Elks members have become complacent and they have forgotten why they joined; but worst, many have forgotten what we do. The sense of Pride in many of our Lodges is dwindling. In this our 110 th Anniversary Year, we need to reflect on the past, but speak words of encouragement and excitement for our future. You, as a member of this organization, are the most important person in Elkdom. You and you alone can make the biggest difference in your Lodge. Each of you can become an ambassador of change in your Lodge. If you become that member to step up and increase your commitment in your Lodge, it becomes infectious. It’s like casting a stone in water, creating ripples. Let’s get others caught up in the ripple effect and create tidal waves in increasing our commitment in our Lodges for the betterment of our State Association. As an incentive to getting our members to Increase their Commitment in Elkdom, each of the Exalted Rulers have received a packet of ICE buttons – “I’m a Committed Elk” button to distribute to their members that go above and beyond the call of their NORMAL responsibilities throughout the year and to acknowledge the increase in their commitment to their Lodges. I ask that the members who receive these button to wear them at Elk functions to help stimulate conversations about the button. During my State visits to your Lodge, it is my intention to talk with the members who are wearing their “I’m a Committed Elk” button to ascertain what they did to deserve it. Likewise, I will be asking others, why they won’t step up, increase their commitment, and earn the button to help their Lodge. Be that Committed Elk by “Increasing Commitment in Elkdom”!!!

Bill Verelst, Vice President Central

Brother and Sister Elks, As members of one of the greatest philanthropic and patriotic fraternal organizations in existence today, our belief in our chosen mission is paramount to our success. Many of our paths in life have been filled with different twist and turns. However, it

is our belief in the virtues of Elkdom that have lead usa all to our Lodge Homes. Some of us serve our Lodges as Officers and Committeepersons, while we all serve as ambassadors to those whom reside in ourcommunities. It is our service to our communities that marks ourplace in the Fraternal world. However, it is our unwaveringcommitment to those less fortunate then ourselves that marks ourdistinction. For this reason, I am asking all West Virginia Elks totake a moment this summer and take part in a Lodge functionwhich includes your community, a veteran or youth organization.Or better yet come and enjoy a few hours with the youth at ourCamps. Not only will you be fulfilling your commitment as an Elk,but you may just feel the expansion of your heart a bit. In closing Iwould just like to thank all of you for taking on the responsibility ofmembership and service to our communities as we embark on oursecond 150 years as a force for good within our communities.Bill Verelst Jr, Vice President North

Sponsor’s Message

This year is the 150th Anniversary of Elkdom. There is nobetter time to spread the word of our Order's good works. Tohelp do this, the Elks National Foundation offered a$1,500.00 Anniversary Grant to each West Virginia Lodge inorder that the Lodges could do more in their communities innew and meaningful ways. I hope your Lodge received one ofthe grants.

The Foundation recently announced the good news that inorder to get a jump start on the next 150 years of Elkdom, the $1,500.00 Anniversary Grant will be offered again in2018-2019 to each West Virginia Lodge. Our Lodges willcontinue to have the option to supersize an already existinggrant project or submit a stand-alone application. See yourLodge's Grant Coordinator for details.

We have established a rich heritage over the past 150years. Did you know Clint Eastwood and Jim Cramer areElks? Other prominent members are Generals MacArthur,Patton and Eisenhower.

Are you aware John Kennedy, Gerald Ford and Franklin D.Roosevelt were Elks? Sports legends Babe Ruth, MickeyMantle and Yogi Berra were members. Hall of Fame memberHonus Wagner belonged to Carnegie Lodge, near Pittsburgh.Vince Lombardi was a member of Green Bay Lodge No. 259.

A rich heritage indeed. A heritage each of us can be proud ofafter 150 years. Let's keep it that way as we begin the next150 years.

Fraternally,

Civic Duty centers on Flags and Father in JuneMessage from Grand Exalted Ruler Malcolm J. McPherson Jr.

June is here, and with that, I am just one month shy of finishing this journeywith you. Until then, there’s still time before your Lodge breaks for thesummer to find ways to fulfill my theme of Strengthening ElkdomThrough Community Awareness, especially with Flag Day and Father’sDay.

Allegiance to our country’s flag has been a requirement for every ElksMember since our inception. When the Grand Lodge designated June 14 asFlag Day in 1907 and made the occasion a mandatory observance for allLodges in 1911, the holiday became an even more important day in ourcountry’s history. President Harry Truman, an Elk himself, recognized June14 as a national observance of the flag in 1949, and ever since, allAmericans honor the flag on this day.

I hope you participate in Flag Day services at your Lodge this year and I encourage you to welcomeall members of your communities, Elks or not, to these events. Take a moment to reflect on thevalues our country’s flag stands for as well as remember all the men and women who have servedand continue to serve it. As Elks, let’s be proud of the role our leaders before us have played inmaking Flag Day such an important day for this remarkable nation.

Father’s Day on June 17 is a time for Elks to remember our organization’s founding fathers, as wellas all fathers in our Lodges and communities. Take some time now to plan a brunch, game night,or other event to show your appreciation for the dads that do so much for their families and yourLodge.

For those of you I’ve yet to visit on this journey, what will you do to honor flags and fathers thismonth? I can’t wait to experience the great things you are working on to support my theme andour shared Elks values. I’ll see you in San Antonio next month for my last moments as your GrandExalted Ruler. I’m looking forward to celebrating all that we have accomplished this year andwelcoming a new year of leadership to Elkdom.

Veterans- Never Forgotten

Warwood resident Pat Duffy neverserved in the U.S. military, but his dadand three brothers did. A case ofrheumatic fever prevented Duffy fromputting on a uniform when he wasoriginally called up during the Bay ofPigs under President John Kennedy’sterm in office. However, Duffy hasalways had his heart in honoringveterans. As patriotism chairman atWheeling Elks Lodge 28, he nevermisses an opportunity to honor thosewho have served and who are currentlyserving our country via the military.

On Thursday, National Vietnam War Veterans Day, Duffy invites area veterans to stop in at Main StreetBank in downtown Wheeling for refreshments, fellowship and a chance for him and his lodge to saythanks to the men and women who served during the controversial war.“I never pulled an American flag across a desert, or up the mast of a ship, but I will always

carry the flag in my heart,” Duffy said.National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29 honors the men and women who served andsacrificed. Between 1964 and 1975, West Virginia provided the most troops per capita in the countrywith 36,578 Mountain State residents serving during the Vietnam War. Filmmakers Ken Burns and LynnNovick’s documentary “The Vietnam War” made for PBS last year, makes note that a disproportionatenumber of African-Americans were taken from inner cities across the country as well as many “poorWest Virginians.” Duffy said many Vietnam veterans were not treated kindly as they returned fromduty. Many Americans believed the war to be unnecessary. Protests were held across the country, witha heavy presence of protesters in Washington, D.C.Combat and combat support units withdrew from South Vietnam on March 29, 1973. The war involvedfive U.S. presidents and 500,000 U.S. military personnel. The war took 58,000 American lives. Mostwere drafted into service. U.S. Sens. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., and Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., introducedlegislation in 2017 to honor Vietnam Veterans with a day on the anniversary of the withdrawal ofmilitary units from South Vietnam. President Donald Trump signed the Vietnam War Veterans Day Acton March 28, 2017, calling for U.S. flags to be flown on March 29 for those who served.
