About

West Virginia UniversityWest Virginia University is a doctoral, Research High-Activity, land-grant institution located in Morgantown, West Virginia. Located in the scenic foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, the city of Morgantown has 35,000 residents with affordable housing, excellent schools, family- oriented community, picturesque countryside and many outdoor activities.

Recently, Morgantown was selected as the best small city in the east and is, 75 miles south of Pittsburgh and 200 miles west of Washington, DC. The WVU student body population is approximately 30,000. Additional information about the university and community may be found at www.wvu.edu.

The University offers 193 bachelors, masters, doctoral, and professional degree programs in 15 colleges. WVU has produced 25 Rhodes Scholars, including former WVU President David C. Hardesty, Jr. The University also has produced 30 Goldwater Scholars, 19 Truman Scholars, 5 members of USA Today’s “All-USA College Academic First Team”, and 2 winners of the Morris K. Udall Undergraduate Scholarship.

In 2009, former WVU President Clements announced his strong commitment to hiring 100 new faculty at West Virginia University to support its land-grant mission of research, education and service as part of its 2020 Strategic Plan for the Future www.strategicplan.wvu.edu. The Statler College plays a primary UROHLQDOOÀYHRIWKHXQLYHUVLW\strategic goals and has received a number of the new faculty positions to support initiatives related to these goals.

WVU ResearchWVU spends over $102 million in total external dollars, including $65 million on sponsored research each year. The WVU community lies within a high technology corridor that includes several federal research facilities (NIOSH, USDOE NETL) and a large pharmaceuticals producer (Mylan) in Morgantown, an I-79 Technology Park 25 miles south in Fairmont, WV, and FBI facilities for biometrics and cyber-security in Clarksburg, WV. There are many industries active in shale gas operations throughout north central West Virginia with a plan to build a $1.3 billion dollar commercial cracking plant in Parkersburg, WV in 2015.

In keeping with West Virginia University’s strategic goal of excellence in research, creative activity and innovation, positions are being allocated in “Mountains of Excellence” that represent multidisciplinary areas of strength and opportunity. The multidisciplinary faculty hires, with the Shale Gas Utilization Mountain initiative, will build upon established success in fundamental and applied energy research, and will address the technology, science, regulation and economics associated with conventional and innovative uses of natural gas. The developing plans for a commercial size cracker plant and other potential investments such as the Governor’s natural gas vehicle initiative are a driving force for WVUI making gas utilization a Mountain initiative.

New faculty joining the program will conduct research and scholarship across college boundaries and develop relationships with existing energy faculty and researchers to establish a nationally visible and externally sustainable program in shale gas utilization. Opportunities also exist to work closely with faculty engaged in research on shale gas production. Provost Michele Wheatly remains committed to the initiative and has committed resources to foster the growth and

development of shale gas utilization research. She recognizes the impact that the program will have on curricular development and outreach, and sees it as a model for future multi-college major research initiatives.

Participating colleges include the Statler College as lead, the Eberly College of Arts and Science in policy through their soon to be established School of Policy, Business & Economics in energy ÀQDQFHV'DYLV&ROOHJHRI$JULFXOWXUH)RUHVWU\and Design in water resources and energy land management, and the College of Law through its energy and environment center. Initially, funds have been provided by the Provost for this Mountain of Excellence to support salaries and startup costs for at least seven new faculty positions. Additional WVU investment is possible and colleges will provide additional support for WKHLQLWLDWLYH7KHÀYHFROOHJHVDUHFROODERUDWLQJon developing an online MS degree program and/RUFHUWLÀFDWHLQHQHUJ\DQGWKH6WDWOHU&ROOHJHis offering a new MS degree program in energy systems starting in fall 2015.

About The Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral ResourcesThe Statler College provides an exciting and rewarding learning environment for its students, faculty, and staff. The College ranks in the top 60 engineering schools in enrollment and graduation. It has seven accredited academic departments, nearly 4,200 students, including more than 700 graduate students, in 14 different degree programs, about 260 PhD students, and over 130 faculty members. It also operates a very active Mining and Industrial Extension Department as part of its land-grant mission. The College ranks about 4th in the Big 12 in enrollment, graduation numbers and funded research. For additional information on the Statler College see www.statler.wvu.edu.

In 2012, through a generous endowed gift from Ben and Jo Statler of $45 million, including a match from the West Virginia Research Trust Fund, the College was renamed in his honor. The major reason is that West Virginia and especially north central parts of the state are located in the heart of the Marcellus gas formation, and below it, the Utica VKDOHIRUPDWLRQ6XIÀFLHQWJDVKDVEHHQORFDWHGWRVXSSRUWQDWLRQDOHQHUJ\QHHGVIRUGHFDGHV:98is committed to being an honest broker to support the gas industry for economic development in the state. The major goal is to support increased uses for shale gas in an environmentally responsible manner, and to add economic value by using the gas locally rather than to become a net exporter of the extracted gas elsewhere. In short, it is important that new uses for gas be developed to ensure demand grows and also to manufacture and use the gas in state rather than to simply export.
