The Power got on the board in the first thanks to a rough outing from Drive starter Yasel Santana, who allowed two runs on one hit and four walks before departing after recording only one out in the inning. West Virginia extended its lead an inning later, as Julio Rodriguez blistered a baseball off the shortstop’s glove to plate a third run. However, Greenville answered in the home half, tallying four runs against Power hurler Ryne Inman, who ceded four straight hits in the frame, the only four he would allow all game. Inman ultimately would last four innings and strike out a Power-starter season-high seven men while walking two. He would leave the game with a no-decision, though, as Manny Pazos bailed out the starter by tying the game at four in the top of the fifth with his first South Atlantic League hit, an opposite-field single. The Drive pushed back in front in the seventh, but West Virginia broke through in the eighth against Yorvin Pantoja and Alex Demchak, as Onil Pena doubled in Rodriguez and Joseph Rosa brought home Pena on an RBI fielder’s choice for the decisive run. THAT’S JUST FILTHY: West Virginia’s pitching staff combined to strike out 19 Greenville batters last night, with Inman setting down seven Drive hitters and the bullpen taking care of the other 12. The Power pitching staff had not combined to strike out more than 19 batters in a game since April 9, 2017, when they fanned 20 Rome Braves. In that game, Luis Escobar retired 12 batters via the K in his Power debut, while Matt Frawley and Dylan Prohoroff locked up the other eight victims. The Power record for most strikeouts in a single game is 24, set back on May 24, 2013. MORE ON THE K’S: Those 19 strikeouts West Virginia compiled last night are tied for the most by a team in a single game in 2019 across all of Minor League Baseball. The Clearwater Threshers (Phillies’ High-A Florida State League affiliate) were the first team to hit the benchmark this year, doing so on April 5 against the Dunedin Blue Jays. The most punch outs a Major League team has recorded this year is 18 (Detroit Tigers vs. the New York Yankees on April 3). THE UNTOUCHABLES: West Virginia’s bullpen has been downright dominant to start the year, and last night was no exception. Jamal Wade earned the win in his full-season debut, striking out a career-best eight batters over three sterling innings of work, while Bryan Pall made his first professional appearance and struck out the side. Dayeison Arias finished off the night by picking up the Power’s first save of the season, and the 10th of his career, after tossing a scoreless ninth. All in all, the Power pen worked five innings and scattered one run on three hits while fanning 12 men, maneuvering their combined ERA to a miniscule 0.61 mark (14.2 IP/1 ER) through three games. MULTI-HIT MADNESS: Five Power players collected multi-hit games last night, as Rodriguez and Rosa both posted their second multi-hit affairs of the season, while Pazos, Pena and Ryan Ramiz, each collected their first hits of the season while notching multi-hit games as well. Rodriguez is the lone Power player to have hit safely in all three games. ONE-RUN FUN: All three games of the Power’s 2019 season thus far have been decided by one run. Last year, West Virginia did not fare so well in one-run contests, posting a 16-26 record (.381), the third-lowest winning % in the league. West Virginia and Greenville are the only two teams in MiLB who have had their first three games decided by one run. 404 ERROR MESSAGE: The Power committed two more errors in last night’s win over the Drive, upping their season total to six through three games. West Virginia now possesses a .946 fielding percentage, tied for second-worst in the SAL. G-VILLE HISTORY: West Virginia holds a 18-19 all-time record inside Greenville’s friendly confines. The club will make one more trip to Fluor Field in 2019, dialing up a four-game series from May 17-20, while the Drive comes to Appalachian Power Park for four games from June 6-9. The 12 head-to-head 2019 games will be the most in series history. THE GOLDEN PIG: Following their series finale with Greenville, West Virginia heads to Kentucky to renew their rivalry with the Lexington Legends. The Legends took the series convincingly last season, claiming 11 of the 18 match- ups, including five of the six games played in the second half. The Power and Legends will meet 15 times this season. POWER POINTS: West Virginia went 2-for-19 with runners in scoring position last night, stranding 14 men on base. They have started the season 3-for-34 (.088) with RISP, the second-lowest mark in the SAL (Columbia, 0-for-18 in 3G). 2019 SOUTH ATLANTIC LEAGUE FIRST HALF STANDINGS Southern Division Italics=Eliminated from Playoffs * = Division Winner W-L GB PCT Asheville 2-1 -- .667 Charleston 2-1 -- .500 Augusta 1-2 1.0 .333 Columbia 1-2 1.0 .333 Greenville 1-2 1.0 .333 Lexington 1-2 2.0 .333 Rome 1-2 2.0 .333 Northern Division Italics=Eliminated from Playoffs * = Divison; & = Wild Card W-L GB PCT Hickory 3-0 -- 1.000 Delmarva 2-1 1.0 .667 Greensboro 2-1 1.0 .667 Kannapolis 2-1 1.0 .667 West Virginia 2-1 1.0 .667 Hagerstown 1-2 2.0 .333 Lakewood 0-3 2.0 .000 CURRENT ROAD TRIP Record: 2-1 Batting Statistics: AVG: .152 (21-for-104) AB: 104 RISP: 3-for-34 (.088) H: 21 R: 9 HR: 1 BB: 18 SO: 28 SB: 2 Defensive Statistics: W-L: 2-1 ERA: 1.63 Quality Starts: 0 IP: 27.2 H: 17 R: 8 ER: 5 SV/OPP: 1/1 BB: 9 SO: 36 HR: 0 Errors: 6 2-1 Date Location Result April 4 Greenville 1-0, Win April 5 Greenville 3-2, Loss April 6 Greenville 6-5, Win April 7 Greenville 3:05 P.M.
