The i n t e r i o r c o n s i s t s of an ent rance h a l l behind which i s a l a r g e main room. E i the r wing can be approached from t h i s entrance ves t ibu le , and i t i s believed t h e house o r i g i n a l l y had two rooms i n the west wing and th ree i n t h e e a s t wing.- I

A t t h e t i m e of i t s move t o i ts present l o c a t i o n i n September 1973, t h d s t r u c t u r e ' had a door c u t i n t o t h e r e a r of t h e l e f t wing and a window i n the r i g h t wing. Both of these have been removed. It was on a foundation much c l o s e r t o t h e ground, bu t t h i s was a change from t h e high basement (s imi lar t o t h e present) of i t s loca t ion before t h e f i r s t move i n 1906. The r e a r g a l l e r y was enclosed f o r u s e as a ki tchen after .1906; t h i s has s ince been opened t o give t h e look of the o r i g i n a l . - A sheet metal roof ( s t i l l i n place) has replaced shingles .

When f i r s t constructed i n about 1834, t h e ~ r a i k - p a t t o n House was on Virginia S t r e e t i n Charleston. It i s t h e proposal of t h e c u s t o d i a l organization--the National Society of Colonial Dames of America Resident i n West Virginia--to r e s t o r e t h e bui ld ing t o t h i s period. The s t r u c t u r e was moved i n 1973 i n order t o save it from t h e t h r e a t of demoli- t i o n f o r property reuse a s a commercial p lo t . Accomplished over a period of two days, the house was divided i n t o i t s t h r e e u n i t s and t ranspor ted about 2% "miles. The new s e t t i n g i s a c t u a l l y c l o s e r t o t h e o r i g i n a l (pre-1906) Virginia S t r e e t locat ion, f o r i t '

o f f e r s more open a r e a and e l iminates thd run down and shoddy condi t ions 'on Lee S t r e e t . The h i s t o r i c a l e f f e c t has been minimized by t h e f a c t t h a t t h e s t r u c t u r e ' s a r c h i t e c t u r e remains i n t a c t and t h e new a rea is c l o s e r i n environment t o 1834 Charleston than was t h e o b d L e r e e t property.

The Riflemen, a f i r s t - r a t e d r i l l i n g company dressed in f i ne green uniforms, Mere I generally of monied families of the area. Their reputation was widespread i n western
