Did You Know?• that due to a shortage of available

school facilities and the increasingcost to rent, we have reduced someof our overhead expenses by con-verting one of our rented ware-houses into a rehearsal hall?

• that "Crazy For You" is still playingon Broadway and is #9 on the listof longest running Tams-Witmarkmusical?

• that "Crazy For You" was inspired, very loosely, on the 1930'sGershwin musical, "Girl Crazy"which featured Ginger Rogers andEthel Merman in the cast?

• that when Ethel Merman per-formed in that 1930's productionof "Girl Crazy", her stardom wasassured when she held a note for16 bars during the "I Got Rhythm"

number to the delight of every au-dience?

• that George & Ira Gershwin wrotethe music for the movie, "Shall WeDance?"starring Fred Astaire &Ginger Rogers?

• that George Gershwin was a re-markable pianist whose dazzlingimprovisations were a source ofwonder?

• that "Crazy For You" is anchoredin the black & white 1930's musi-cals made by Warner Brothers,MGM and RKO, reinventing themfrom a 1990's perspective, callingto mind Ruby Keiler dancing in"42nd Street", Mickey Rooney andJudy Garland putting on a show in"Babes In Arms" and the BusbyBerkeley routines?

Grateful AcknowledgementsAmerican Musical Theater of San Jose, Argonaut School, Saratoga Drama Group,Eliza Chugg of San Jose State University, & Villa Hotel in San Mateo. A Note from the Director

As you sit back in your seat and watch thisproduction, I don't want you to think about thetwo months of rehearsal that went into "Crazy ForYou". The 83 hours of actual rehearsal just for thedance numbers should be the furthest thing fromyour mind; not to mention the two to four hoursof prep-time to create each dance before teachingthe cast. Don't even bring into your thoughts the55+ hours of vocal rehearsal to recreate theharmonies that George & Ira Gershwin wrote forthis show. The design and construction of eachcostume for each performer on this stage isn't evena consideration. Nor are the stage settings them-selves and the untold hours in construction, painting, decorating and lighting. Not to mentionthe 185+ hours of rehearsal and the 200+ hours oftechnical production to put on this show by agroup of people who have jobs, families, schoolingand lives to contend with, all to please just onespecial person ... YOU! We hope that you enjoyour efforts.

-Richard Gaetano

WEST VALLEY LIGHT OPERA ASSOCIATIONANNOUNCES ITS 34TH SEASON, 1998-1999

"CAROUSEL"Music by RICHARD RODGERS, Book & Lyrics by OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II,

Based on Ference Molnar's "Liliom", this favorite Rodgers & Hammerstein musical relates the storyof a handsome, carefree carnival barker who captivates and marries a lovely, naive local girl. In a "desperate attempt to get money for his unborn child, he is killed during the robbery and is sent to ',I

heaven. However, he is permitted to return to earth for one day during which time he brings Ihappiness to his wife and daughter in a dramatic testimony to the power of love. This show ~originally opened on Broadway in 1945. The 1956 film version starred Gordon MacRae and ShirleyJones. In 1967, ABC-TV starred Robert Goulet in its presentation and a new, highly acclaimedrevival opened in London in 1993 and in New York in 1994. IIJOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOATIIMusic by ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER, Lyrics by TIM RICE

This will be the first Andrew Lloyd Webber musical presented in this theater. The composer of suchmemorable hits ("Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita", "Cats", "Phantom Of The Opera" & "StarlightExpress") chose this biblical tale of Joseph and his brothers from the Old Testament to create a joyousexplosion of color, comedy, music and fun that is popular with families of all ages, Joseph was aprophetic dreamer and, as a youth, was given a coat of many colors by his father. Joseph's brotherswere jealous and sold him into slavery in Egypt. There, because of his gift for interpreting dreams, hewas made a principal advisor to the Pharaoh. This musical opened on Broadway in 1981 and severalnational touring companies have since presented it in the major cities across the country.Musical numbers include: "Joseph's Dream", "One More Angel In Heaven","Who's The Thief?", "and"Any Dream Will Do".
