Manistee County Airport DirectorBarry Lind hopes that he will never haveto use the services of firefighting units on aplane at the local airport, but in the eventthat the unthinkable does happen, hewants to make sure that his own staff andlocal fire departments are ready to handlethe challenge.
On May 7, five local township and cityfire departments were joined by personnelfrom the Manistee County Blacker Airportin a day-long training session with a planefire simulator from Kellogg CommunityCollege. There was a grant several yearsago that the state requested from thefederal government to purchase the simu-lator to be used for primarily Michiganairports. However, since that time theyhave taken it to other states for trainingsessions.
Today we are doing our annualrecurrent fire training, said Lind. Weare required per FAA (Federal AviationAssociation) regulations that we have oneevery 12 months. When we do it on the air-port, we invite all our mutual aid depart-ments like Manistee Township, the City ofManistee, East Lake, Maple Grove, BearLake, Filer Township.
The idea is not only are we filling therequirements for our own staff, we are alsousing it as an exercise so everyone whomight be responding to an issue is pre-
pared, or more familiar with what to do inthat circumstance.
Lind said that one of the statistics thatcame out of the morning lecture sessionwas the fact that 90 percent of airplaneaccidents happen off of airport property. That means all fire personnel should beprepared on how to handle those issues.
It may happen in their back yard, andthey have to be prepared, said Lind.
The training session was funded by a$8,000 grant from the Manistee CountyLocal Revenue Sharing Board. Last
year they sent local fire fighting staff toEscanaba for training at that airport.
We like to do things a little differ-ently every year to keep them on their toes
because when you do the same trainingevery year it could tend to get boring, andthis keeps them on their toes, said Lind.
Manistee County FirefightersAssociations John Dunlap said it isextremely important to get personneltrained. He said it is not only vital as areminder course, but also as new trainingfor those who havent been in the depart-ment very long.
That is the important part about thistraining to get all these guys trained, sothey know what they are going to do whenthey go into something like this, saidDunlap. Something could happen at anytime and if it did it could take the wholecounty to handle it, so that is why I like tosee everyone get involved.
In the morning they learned how tocut the power off to the plane and shut theengines down in the event of an emergen-cy. They also learned about the jump seatsand how to safely remove the passengersfrom the plane.
It is quite an experience, said Dunlap.Today, there will be flames around theplane and they have dummies inside theplane to simulate passengers. We willlearn to go inside the plane and get themout. It is good training for young firemancoming into the service.
We like to do things a littledifferently every year to keep
them on their toes becausewhen you do the same train-ing every year it could tendto get boring, and this keepsthem on their toes.

STORY IDEA?If you have a story idea,

Dreaming the dreams ofkids in the summer of 68W
hen it comes tobeing a fan of theDetroit Tigers
aseball team, I consideryself a throwback to theld days because one of
y favorite things to do isisten to the games on theadio.
It is something I startedoing as a kid when Erniearwell and Paul Carey did
he games. They where onhe local radio station and Iouldnt miss the chance to
isten to them on my littleransistor radio.
Most young peopleouldnt have a clue whatam talking about whenou talk about a transistoradio, but we thought theyere high tech back thenif there was such a thing
n those days.It was especially fun to
isten to the Tigers whenhey were on the west coastlaying the Angels or thethletics, as I would sneak
he transistor radio intoed with me. No stereoeadphones on that baby as
t was strictly one ear plugnder the covers.
It was the summer of968, and I had everyonesaseball card on the teamhat year. Names like
aline, Freehan, McLain, olich, Hiller, McAullife, tanley, Northup andorton still dance in myead to this day.
What made it specialas that slow Southernrawl of Ernie that wasmooth as silk. Ernie didntake a game magical heade every pitch specialith his stories and sayings
hat he weaved in through-ut the night.
If a ball was fouled intohe stands, Ernie would say
hat one was caught by auy from River Rouge evenhough he didnt have alue where the person wasrom. He also had sayingsike he stood there like theouse by the side of theoad if a guy was called outn strikes without swing-
ng. It was things that stickith me to this day.
Ernie was special andven though we had tele-ision back then, I stillistened to Ernie and Paularey over television. Partf it was I have always pos-
essed a great imagination. The fun of listening to a
ame on the radio is that itomes to life in my head.dont have instant replay
rom 10 different angles, elmet cameras or any ofhe other gadgets of today,ut it was just as exciting toe. It is a thrill I still get
o this day.Of course televised
aseball back then was aar cry from what we know
today. For one thing, it wasin black and white, andanother thing is they onlyused a few cameras and theangles were nothing spec-tacular.
Back then I could tellevery player on almostevery team in the AmericanLeague who played theTigers. I would study the
box scores and the stand-ings religiously. I knew
who had the top batting
average, led in homerunsand runs batted in to leadthe league.
There are many kidsthat still follow the game,
but I dont think many fol-lowed it like we did backthen. We just werent justfans we were students ofthe game and loved everyminute of it.
Like most kids, I col-lected baseball cards andfor quite a few years in my
youth I had every playerfrom every team. Thenone day when I was in myteens my mother told methat they had thrown themall out because they weretaking up too much space. That was a sad day, but
what made it even sadderwas years later when I real-ized how much those cards
were worth I was sooooosad.
As I grew older, thethrill of listening to Tigergames on the radio stilldidnt leave me. I know it isstill a big memory for manyof my friends as we would
all get together to listen tothe games at my friendshouse.
You dont know whatbaseball was like until yousat on the Smogoleski fam-ily front porch on a warmsummer night with aboutfive of your best friendslistening to the call of Ernieon the radio. I wouldnttrade those memories in foranything in the world.
We were there in 1984and again in 1987 hangingon every word that cameout of Ernies mouth.
Today Dan Dickersonand Jim Price do the callof the games on the radioand they do a great job.I have come to love their
broadcasts as much as whatErnie used to do.
However, there isnta local radio station thatcarries the games, so I lis-ten on a static-filled 93.7channel out of Cadillac. Onsome nights they come inclear as a bell and other
nights I hear more of BobUecker and the MilwaukeeBrewers in the backgroundthan I do of Dickerson andPrice. Of course if I standon one leg and stick both
my arms out like I am flyingthe reception picks up, but
who wants to do that forthree hours.
My car radio picks themup quite clear, but the con-cept of riding around forthree hours at $4 a galloncould run me broke in ahurry.
Its sad. I think theyhave lost something specialfor todays kids by doingthat and taking away theirability to dream like we didso many years ago, listeningto those magical broadcasts. It allowed us to dreamthe thoughts that childrenshould at that age. There
were special times, but Ithink they are gone.
What is even sadder is
it isnt going to come backbefore I...
See you nextWednesday.
