Outdoor recreation andtourism are a big part ofManistees economy.
So, its no wonder whythe county was repre-sented at the 37th Annual
Outdoorama in suburbanDetroit this past weekend.
Bob Guenthardt, ofRenegade Charters, andSuzanne Riley, owner ofCentury 21 Boardwalkwere the representativespassing out informa-tion and talking up theManistee area this year.
Guenthardt was sign-ing up anglers for theTight Lines for our Troopsevent on May 24 and 25in Manistee. The charityfishing event for veterans
is being organized by agroup of charter boat cap-tains in Manistee County, many of whom are veter-ans themselves.
The Manistee boothhad information on theevent, and also on all therecreational opportunitiesavailable in the area.
Were down here pro-moting the county, Rileysaid. Were trying to getpeople up there.
There were maps, fly-rs and brochures on
verything from fishingo golfing in Manisteeounty. According toiley, many people in
he heavy crowds thathronged the Rockinancial Showplace
n Novi, where theutdoorama was held, ere interested in the
nformation the boothffered.
Plenty of inter-
ested people stopped byThursday and Friday,Riley and Guenthardtsaid. By Saturday, theyddistributed a lot of infor-mation.
Weve gone throughthree boxes of pamphletsso far, Riley said.
The U.S. Forest Servicealso had a booth at theshow offering informationabout the Huron-Manistee
National Forest. The show was a chancefor outdoor enthusiasts allover the state to shake offthe winter blues and getgeared up for the upcom-ing warm weather.
It brought togetheroutdoor shops, outfittersand organizations fromacross the state to show-case their goods and ser-
vices under one roof and
gave fishermen, huntersand other outdoor loversthe chance to gawk at new
boats, fishing rods andguns.
More than 30 non-profit clubs and organiza-tions, many of which areaffiliates of the MichiganUnited ConservationsClubs (MUCC), wereon hand at the show,
which also featured
former Detroit Tigerspictcher Milt Wilcox andhis Ultimate Air Dogsshow of leaping Labradorretrievers and other athlet-ic canines. Other featuredevents included a troutpond and a demonstra-tion by members of the
Willow Winds TraditionalWilderness Skills, whotanned deer hides the old-fashioned way.
