The Active Aging Newsletter includes information for
seniors 50+ in our community. All of the activities in this
newsletter are designed to promote health and well-being.
Get moving, get active, get healthy and get to the
Community Center for fun! We offer fitness classes,
information and assistance, leisure activities, trips, events
and opportunities to visit and socialize with others. As
always, we are dedicated to making a difference in each
and every one of your lives.
To enjoy our programs you will need to register prior to
attending. There are two registration options. Option (1):
Registration will be taken from the Parks & Recreation
counter located within the Community Center @ 1075
West Capitol Avenue, where our friendly staff will be
happy to assist you. Option (2): You can register online at
www.westsacfun.org.
If you have not done so already, please stop by and join

January Events and Trips
Hobby Lobby and lunch at Golden Corral
Date: Friday, January 12th Time: 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost: $7
Hobby Lobby is a retail store that sells arts and craft supplies, fabrics, baskets, silk flowers, needlework,
picture framing, party supplies, furniture, and other related items. Please bring money for any purchases you
would like to make. Space is limited so please register early.
Martin Luther King’s Birthday closure
Date: Monday, January 15, 2018
Community Center will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King’s Birthday
Crocker Art Museum and lunch at Crocker Café
Date: Friday, January 26th Time: 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost: $7, plus money for admission.
Take a day to visit the Crocker Art Museum. Here are some of the exhibits that will be available for your enjoyment: Masters of Venice; Exuberant Earth; Wingding Art Spot. Lunch will be at the Crocker Café located
on the first floor of the Teel Family Pavilion.
Admission price is $10 Adults, $8 Seniors 65+ & FREE to Crocker members.
February Events and Trips
AARP Safe Driver Refresher Class
Date: Thursday, February 8th Time: 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Cost: $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members Where: Community Center
Cars have changed, so have traffic rules, driving conditions, and the roads we drive on every day. Brush up on
your driving skills to stay safe! This is a refresher course that Instructor Jim Colgan will be teaching for those
who have previously taken the two-day course. Participants must preregister. For questions or registration
forms call Instructor Jim Colgan at (916) 600-4500. Fee is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-
members. Pay by check only. Space is limited.
Red Hawk Casino
Date: Friday, February 9th Time: 9 a.m. to approximately 3 p.m. Cost: $15 Casino Bonus $5
Come join us on a trip to Red Hawk Casino. Red Hawk Casino has over 2400 slot machines of different
denominations ranging from a penny to $25. In addition to slot machines, Red Hawk also has gaming tables,
a poker room and a non smoking gaming section. There are seven restaurants including the Waterfall Buffet
where you can choose from over 300 selections. We will be at the casino for four hours. Upon arrival you will
get $5 slot play. You must have a valid photo ID/passport player card. Space is limited so please register early
to guarantee your seat on the shuttle.
Sweet Heart Bingo
Date: Tuesday, February 13th Time: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Cost: $7
Join Community Center staff for an exiting event as we celebrate Valentines Day. We will play bingo for a
chance to win great prizes. It will be a morning full of Valentines themed excitement. Seniors are encouraged
to come dressed in white, pink and red! Space is limited so register early.
Participants are encouraged, but not required, to wear red, white and pink. Space is limited.

Transportation Options
Senior Eligibility for Yolobus Special Vouchers
For senior citizens seeking independent community mobility, the Senior Transportation Vouchers Program
offers vouchers for Yolobus Special to help cover fares for transportation to medical appointments, shopping
and more. To be eligible, a person must be 60 years old and in need of door-to-door assistance. This program
is funded by a grant through the Agency on Aging Area 4 via the Yolo Adult Day Health Center. For
information about eligibility and application for this service, call the Community Center at (916) 617-5320
and ask to speak with Tyler Jones. Vouchers are very limited.

PIER 39’s TULIPMANIA San Francisco
Date: Friday, February 16th Time: 8 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m. Cost: $30
In February, PIER 39 comes alive with the vibrant colors of thousands of blooming tulips and seasonal
garden favorites throughout both levels of PIER 39. Walk around on your own or enjoy a free, guided
landscaping tour that begins at 10am in PIER 39′s entrance plaza. Make sure to bring your cameras to
capture what’s blooming at PIER 39! Enjoy shopping at a vast selection of restaurants. Dress warmly and
wear your walking shoes!

The Margaret McDowell Lounge is located on the first floor of the West Sacramento Community Center. It is a daily focal point for senior activities, social gatherings and information. It includes amenities such as a
fireplace, kitchenette, flat screen TV, tables and more!
Hands On Craft Classes
Ceramics: Learn how to make ceramics and enjoy the social atmosphere. Monday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fee: Donation Location: Riverbend Manor (664 Cummins Way )
Knit and Crochet: Learn new techniques and socialize. All skill levels welcomed. Bring your own supplies.

Scrapbooking & Card Making : Join others, socialize and create cards and scrapbook pages displaying your per-sonal pictures. Paper, glue, and scissors are provided. Bring your pictures, keepsakes, and albums.

Sew and Sew’s: Come and independently practice traditional or time saving quilting techniques. Participants are encouraged to practice and share ideas,

Opportunities and Reminders
Use your life experiences to serve as an RSVP volunteer. If you are 55+ and can volunteer a few hours a week, many opportunities are available. Please call (916) 875-3631 for more information.
Yolo Adult Day Health Center (YADHC) has implemented a West Sacramento inclusive program that provides Yolobus Special vouchers to medically designated, disabled seniors who are 60+ and eligible for
YOLOBUS Special paratransit services. Funded by Area 4 Agency on Aging (A4AA), it is designed to encourage independent community mobility for disabled seniors who, due to a disability, are unable to travel to a boarding and disembarking location on fixed bus routes. For eligible candidates, limited vouchers are available from Active Aging
programs. Please call (916) 617-5320.
NOTE: Active Aging activities and events have limited space. You must register prior to
attending. Spaces are filled on a first come first serve basis. Prices are subject to change and may
not include taxes and additional purchases.
REFUND POLICY - If you wish to drop or transfer to another available program, contact us five (5) full business days before the
program start date for a credit or refund. A refund will be given if the department cancels the program or for medical reasons that
can be verified by your doctor. No refunds shall be issued for non-attendance, Recreation Center passes, or material fees. All
requests received within five (5) business days must be approved or denied by the City of West Sacramento Parks and Recreation
Department. All refund checks will be processed through the Finance Department and mailed to you within 4-6 weeks. Parks &
Recreation management can review refund requests on a case by case basis should special circumstances arise. RETURNED
CHECK FEE POLICY - The return check fee will be a flat $30 per check returned. A hold will be placed on the account
and account holder will be unable to participate in programs until the returned check payment is made.

speeding. She later finds the true meaning in life.
March 19th movie is Citizen Kane– This movie is considered to be one of the greatest films ever made. Charles Foster Kane whispers “Rosebud,” in his deathbed. In a series of back flashes
Kane’s life is recreated to figure out the meaning of his dying word.

Book Club-Between the Covers Reading is not only fun, it's fundamental! There are many benefits seniors can glean from reading: enhancement of
memory, sharpening decision making skills, delays in onset of dementia, stress reduction and better sleep. Books are
issued through Yolo County's Read Around Yolo (RAY) pro-gram. Members meet and discuss a favorite passage, an-
swer thought provoking questions about the characters and talk about book content.

Come and learn a series of movements and breathing exercises for general wellness, stress relief, physical balance, flexibility and fall prevention.
Part XXV, we shall start the new year by going back to the basics – getting rid, dispelling bad qi within our body and nourishing good qi in return.
We shall also re-practice some of the Tai Chi and Qigong movements that help to strengthen the spinal cord and its flexibility. Come in comfortable
clothing, floor mats will be provided. Please note that you do not attend previous session to attend this class. No registration required. Please come
in comfortable clothing.
Dr. Gigi Tze-yue Hu is a semi-retired Asian Studies scholar and has a Master Degree in Tai Chi from the University of the East-West Medicine in
Sunnyvale, CA.

March 30, 2018 – Therapeutic Tai Chi and Qigong – Part XXVII at 4pm-5pm
Come and learn a series of movements and breathing exercise for general wellness, stress relief, physical balance, flexibility and fall prevention.
In Part XXVII, we shall learn some of the training postures and warm-up exercises that are practiced in Tai Chi and Tai Chi Chuan as well. They
help to increase our body strength, the ability to have better self-control of balance with coordinated breathing and mental concentration. Come in
comfortable clothing, floor mats will be provided. Please note that you do not attend previous session to attend this class. No registration required.
Please come in comfortable clothing. Dr. Gigi Tze-yue Hu is a semi-retired Asian Studies scholar and is currently completing her Master Degree in
Tai Chi.
