As a community-minded foodie, who has been “shopping local” long before it was trendy, I have very much enjoyed West Reading since returning to town to live 15 years ago. As

a writer and marketer, you can imagine my excitement in becoming involved with Avenues magazine. It’s with great enthusiasm and warmth that I introduce you to the businesses and events that make West Reading the place to be!

We are grateful to former editor Andrea Much for the leadership she has given to the publication during her tenure. But she won’t be far, as West Reading remains her home and in her heart. You’ll see her name as a contributing writer to the magazine in this issue and in the seasons that follow. Please join me in thanking Andrea for sharing her passion for West Reading with our readers. We wish her well in her future endeavors.

In the Fall 2015 issue of Avenues, we aim to provide you with a sampling of our exciting events and introduce you to businesses

Some readers may be familiar with Chrissy from her tenure at Goldsmith’s in Wyomissing where she has worked for the past eight years. She began her business plan well before finding her location in the former Hutchison Jewelers store at 512 Penn Avenue.

Everything in the store is handmade in the U.S. using responsible manufacturing practices. Currently, she offers the work of five different East Coast jewelers, who happen to be women she has known over the years from Brooklyn, Maine, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. She plans to rotate jewelers and merchandise to keep the store interesting and fresh for shoppers – and she would like to include local artists in the future as well.

Joel Pier Takes the Helm of Bikram Yoga West ReadingMost people have heard: Bikram Yoga is “hot” – literally and figuratively!

Bikram Yoga West Reading was founded by Marnie Healy in 2012. Marnie and her family moved to West Chester earlier this year and were thrilled when their Bikram colleague and teacher Joel Pier was interested in taking ownership. Joel was the founder of the well-established Philadelphia Bikram Studio many years ago. He’s been teaching here in West Reading for several years and been a certified yoga instructor for more than 25 years, studying and practicing in India and the United States.

Loyal practitioners enjoy huge benefits; Bikram is said to detoxify, strengthen and heal the body, while relaxing and restoring the mind. The Bikram method is a repetitive set of 26 postures and two breathing exercises practiced in 105-degree heat. Following this strict routine allows students to go deep into a meditative state, focusing and relaxing their mind, while physically stretching, re-shaping and healing their body.

Joel has made a few changes since he took the reigns – rounding out the 6:00 am Sunrise schedule by offering classes every weekday morning. He also aims to grow the studio by inviting new students offering an Introductory One-Month pass. For just $40 guests can attend unlimited classes for the month enabling them to try different times of the day and different instructors. The studio also offers a half-price rate for the Tuesday/Thursday 7:30 pm classes – which is perfect for drop-ins!

All Bikram hot yoga classes are 90 minutes long and are suitable for beginner through advanced levels. Participants are asked to bring a yoga mat, towel and plenty of water. Bikram is a silent practice. More details and the class schedule can be found on their website: bikrumyogawestreading.com.

Bistro 614 Grand Re-openingOwners Rol and Nita Sugg and Owner/Head Chef Michael Steffy are thrilled to reopen their Penn Avenue restaurant after a kitchen fire closed their doors in the summer of 2014. But not nearly as thrilled as their customers! Rol notes that they had a soft opening mid-May and the moment their lights were on, customers started phoning for reservations.

“It was such a wonderful feeling to know that our customers were as excited as we were to be open again,” said Rol. In fact, while Bistro 614 was being renovated, Rol forwarded the

restaurant’s phone line to his cell phone, which kept him connected to their customers. In the many conversations he had with callers, the owners were able to really sense their customers’

genuine support during a more than challenging era. As a result, they speak of their customers like family.

Patrons will delight in Michael’s consistently scrumptious menu, featuring local ingredients whenever possible. The new menu offers a few of their previous favorites, including the rack of lamb, home-made wild mushroom ravioli and tomato Caprese salad. There is something for everyone – from a Napoleon of roasted beets to a duck quesadilla, from steak frites to orange and almond scallops. And the specials are sure to tempt you as well!

Opening December 2015: Cheers American Bistro in the DoubleTree Hotel, Featuring John Zuwiala as the Executive ChefExecutive Chef John Zuwiala recently joined Reading’s new DoubleTree Hotel, opening in December 2015. Serving seasonal ingredients from local farmers, Center Stage American Bistro offers a farm-to-table approach. General Manager Craig Poole says, “The menu is sure to satisfy all appetites! Our goal was to create a welcoming spot for dining and socializing.”

With 27’ wood-beamed ceilings, wood floors and dramatic pendant lighting, the Center Stage American Bistro has a rustic, urban, high-end sensibility. The restaurant was designed with three stepped-up levels in an effort to create more intimate spaces – with cozy seating and intimate nooks welcoming customers to linger with friends. There’s also a private dining room for special events. On sunny days, you can even enjoy outdoor seating along Penn Street.

Poole is thrilled to have Executive Chef John Zuwiala on board. While many are familiar with Zuwiala from his local businesses, Hauté Chocolate Café on Penn Avenue in West Reading and the former Joe’s Famous American Kitchen outside of Lancaster, PA, you may not be aware of John’s extensive professional chef experience. Before coming to the Reading area, John worked as a chef in several high-end hotels from Arizona to Florida. Poole notes that, “John is a chef with a cool, artistic style. He understands small plates and special dishes. John has an absolute level of genius when it comes to unique approaches to food.”

Zualla will have a chance to demonstrate his expertise servicing the 200-person dining room, 209 guest rooms and 27,000 square feet of catering space, including a 1000-seat banquet room.

In 2015 David Dragonfly celebrates the tenth anniversary of owning a successful arts studio and retail location, Dragonfly Studio and Gallery. David’s very first studio was in Coopersburg, PA.

Many people are familiar with David’s retail location, but what is not popular knowledge, is that originally David also taught glass-blowing students in a space below the retail section. This attracted many artists to David’s studio, where they were able to create art and sell their work.

David has a strong passion for art – both in his own work and in that of his community of artists, whose work he has promoted and sold through the years. Dragonfly Studio also offers tattoo and body piercing services.

When asked how he has maintained a successful business for so many years, David had this to say, “Times are always changing. As a store owner you need to keep things new and fresh. A lover of all things local, it is with great excite-ment and enthusiasm

that I say hello to my neighbors as the new West Reading Main Street Manger! “Main Street is a comprehensive, communi-ty-based approach to revital-izing downtowns and central business districts…”, as stated by the Pennsylvania Downtown Center, and we are gearing up to continue to enhance and improve the Penn Avenue aspect of West Reading. We love working here as much as you love visting here and with deep love of our community Dean Rohrbach and I are excited to synergize the Main Street and Elm Street efforts to further the mission of the West Reading Community Revitalization Foundation (WRCRF) to make the Borough an even better place to call home for our residents, businesses and community neighbors. Laney’s Legacy of Hope hosted its second annual 5k to support children with pediatric cancer and their families Sunday, September 6th. The race, will celebrate and re-

member the life of Laney Brown, who lost her battle with cancer on Christmas Day of 2013, five days after her 8th birthday.

The race’s “Fashionista Theme” encouraged participants to dress for high fashion, with awards for Best Dressed Girl, Woman, Boy and Man being presented to participants. “Last year proved to be a very high-energy, fun race,” said Laney’s Legacy of Hope President and Laney’s mother Jennifer Capone-Brown. “Over 700 runners came from multiple states dressed in colorful tutus, sequined yoga pants, blinged-out bow ties, and even some brave men wore high heels all to support our cause and raise awareness for pediatric cancer.”

Entertainment was provided before, during, and after the race, brought to you by Eclipse Entertainers, featuring DJ Jon Gosselin and DJ N-DO, who hope to energize runners for the 5k as well as the crowds present to cheer on their family and friends. Start/Finish line carnival games and face-painting for children will also be available as well as snacks and beverages.

“West Reading is where Laney lived her entire life,” said Capone-Brown. “West Reading is also the place where over 10,000 people joined together to sing Christmas carols to her while she battled her cancer from a hospital bed at home. This is a community that cares about children with cancer. This is where people band together and say that it’s not okay for an 8-year-old to lose her life so young.”

A quick stroll down Penn Avenue will show you that West Reading is full of bold, prosperous dreamers! For many, owning a business is an important part of the American

Dream, but transforming your business dreams into reality re-quires careful planning and dedication. This guide can help you dot every “i” and cross every “t” as you lay the foundations for a successful business. First things first... This guide assumes you have the basics – a business idea, marketing, management plans, and your budget.

If you need help getting started, the Small Business Administration and the PA Department of Community and Economic Develop-ment can offer valuable advice. You may even qualify for grant money to help get your business up and running!

1 Verify Your Zoning So... You found the perfect West Reading location for your busi-ness. Before you sign a lease or buy a property, make sure the current zoning will accommodate your business. To ensure that your new enterprise can operate legally for many years to come, this step is absolutely critical. Make an appointment with the West Reading Codes Department. They can explain how the borough is organized and where certain types of businesses are permitted.

2 Apply for a Zoning Permit After you’ve verified that your business meets West Reading’s requirements for your potential location, file an application for a Zoning Permit and pay the accompanying nominal fee. Whether your application is approved or denied, you still have options.

3a. Your Application Was Approved! Before you make any changes, you’ll need to verify that your property meets the required ADA compliance for the type of business that you are opening. Officially, painting doesn’t count as renovation, so feel free to celebrate your zoning approval with a fresh coat of paint!

If you don’t need any renovations beyond painting, please check your required ADA compliance with the borough, address any issues, and then move on to the occupancy permit (Step 4).

Dream BIG How to Start Your Business in West Reading


If you need to renovate your location beyond painting or are planning to change the basic use of your property, you should discuss the required permits and ADA compliance needs with your architect, builder, or licensed contractors. Keep in mind that any plumbing or electrical work needs to be performed by a professional who is licensed to perform services in West Reading Borough. If you find that you need significant upgrades to meet ADA requirements, you may seek a variance from the PA Department of Labor and Industry. After you’ve finished renovating, your location will need to pass a final inspection in order to obtain an occupancy permit (Step 4) before you begin operating your business.

3b My Application Was Denied. Don’t worry... There’s still hope! If your zoning permit was denied, you can file an appeal. You need to arrange an appeal hearing with the Zoning Hearing Board, which can be scheduled through the Codes Department. The appeal process costs approximately $1,500, and while a lawyer isn’t required, it is a formal hearing with a court reporter – so it’s best to play it safe. If your appeal is successful, you may be granted a variance that authorizes you to operate your business in the location you desire.

4 Schedule Your Occupancy Permit The location is ready, your business plan is sound, and all of your hard work and dedication is about to pay off. Now, you need to get an occupancy permit. Call the Codes Department and schedule an inspection of your property. A successful inspection will result in an Occupancy Permit that allows you to open your doors!

5 Obtain a Business Privilege License You’ll still need to set up your Business Privilege License with the Berks Earned Income Tax Bureau. You can contact them directly for the paperwork.

6 Join LoveWestReading.org Now that you’ve officially joined the West Reading community, register your business for free on our website, Love West Reading. Hundreds of people visit the website every month and they’re looking for businesses just like yours!

Eating well is important for good health. With that in mind, Reading Health System is partnering with two organic

food providers to offer community members and employees the convenience of purchasing high-quality

organic produce, meats and other products on the Reading Hospital campus every Wednesday afternoon.

This year, Dundore & Heister, a local butcher shop, is selling meats; pantry items such as pickles, granola, syrups, oils and mustards; and prepared foods such as meatballs, soups, Bolognese and taco meat in the second-floor lobby of the Doctors Office Building at Seventh Avenue and Spruce Street every Wednesday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

That timing coincides with when community members and employ-ees may pick up shares of organic products they have purchased from the Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative’s Community Support Agriculture (CSA) program. Reading Health System has arranged for the second-floor lobby of the Doctors Office Building to be a Lancaster Farm Fresh drop-off site. Reading Health System employees serve as volunteers and help with the produce pickup.

Tapping these two vendors, Reading Health System is bringing together in one location some of the freshest, highest-quality food available and helping offer access to knowledgeable organic-food experts from Dundore & Heister and Lancaster Farm Fresh.

Dundore & Heister products are readily available for purchase on-site; no registration or pre-order is necessary.

Lancaster Farm Fresh CSA members pay for their share in the winter and early spring, and then receive their weekly share of the seasonal harvest. The cooperative offers

shares of certified organic fruits, vegetables, chicken, meat, eggs, bread, cheese, yogurt, flowers, herbs and more.

CSA Members receive a newsletter from the cooperative a few days before their pickup each week. The newsletter includes a list of vegetables likely to be in that week’s share as well as recipes for vegetables that may be less familiar to some recipients.

Most people are aware of the West Reading Community Revitalization program and the Elm Street program which seek to stabilize the older neighborhoods surrounding the Main Street business district. These programs include the Property Acquisition, Rehabilitation & Resell (PARR) program; Façade Improvement Grants; Paint the Town event; and public art installations, such as the Cherry Street Mural Corridor initiative.

Elm Street H.E.L.P. ProgramWest Reading Elm Street in partnership with Berks County Office of Community Development has a program called H.E.L.P. which can provide up to $40,000 in zero percent (0%), deferred payment loans with NO MONTHLY PAYMENTS. However, in this program the county does put a lien on the home for the amount of the principal (there is no interest). The principal is paid when you sell home no matter when the sale occurs.

H.E.L.P. was designed primarily as a lead abatement program for older homes where a child under six resides. The lead abatement portion of the $40,000 maximum is a 100% grant. This could include removing and re-painting interior and exterior surfaces and even provide for new windows. After the lead abatement portion is complete, the homeowner can spend the remaining portion (up to $40,000) on any home improvement they want, such as installing a new kitchen, remodeling the bathroom, purchasing new energy efficient appliances, etc.

There are four limitations to H.E.L.P. program: 1) Home must be owned or under agreement of sale in Elm Street target neighborhood; 2) Property must be owner-occupied; 3) Property must have child under six years old living there; and4) Only available to families at moderate-income or below. Income Guidelines: 1 Person $37,200; 2 Persons $42,50; 3 Persons $47,800; 4 Persons $53,100; 5 Persons $57,350.

Reading Hospital HousingAssistance ProgramDo you or someone you know work for Reading Health System (RHS) and want to buy a home in West Reading? West Reading Elm Street has partnered with Reading Health Systems to create an Employee Housing Assistance Program that provides up to $5,000 in down payment or closing cost assistance to their employees who buy homes in Elm Street target neighborhoods. This neighborhood extends from South 2nd to South 7th and Cherry to Pine (See map on hospital brochure) -- in convenient proximity to the hospital’s main campus. In addition, the hospital program also provides for a $2,500 Home Improvement Loan for façade repairs and upgrades.

Both of these programs are available to any of Reading Health System’s 7,000 full-time employees. Both programs are zero per-cent (0%) interest, deferred payment loans with NO MONTHLY PAYMENT. No lien is placed on the property. These loans are forgivable loans with 20% being forgiven annually over five years at which time they become a 100% grant, if the employee stays in their home.

It’s become a tradition to celebrate a new season in this vibrant neighborhood. Between West Reading’s Art on the Ave and Holiday Glow celebrations, there’s plenty of room to find a reason to usher in the autumn season in beautiful Berks County. After all, what better reason travel through surrounding bands of golden farmlands and forested hills? And while you are here, view the valley from our Pagoda overlook!

Traditionally held each year on the third Saturday in Sep-tember, the 9th annual Fall Fest will take place on Saturday, September 19th. The borough’s main street, Penn Avenue, is closed to traffic from the 500-700 blocks of West Reading. This pedestrian-friendly, all-ages event is the best way to truly experience all of what the Avenue has to offer.

Fall Fest is all within walking distance from plenty of free parking that can be found within the area’s side streets and VF Outlet Village. Pack the strollers, pick a landmark to meet friends and wind your way through the street’s activities. In addition to volunteers, West Reading borough policeman on-foot help to make this event safe and convenient for the record-setting amount of visitors traveling to the area for the day-long celebration.

Games First played in the 1970s by the likes of Lance Mountain, then adopted by street skaters in the 1980s, the Game of Skate bor-rows from basketball’s game of H.O.R.S.E. Beer TentOver the years, the Fall Fest beer tent has become the crowd’s most popular attrac-tion. This year, it holds a lot of big wins, including chances to win extraordinary raffle prizes and a beer truck that will be tapping double the amount it has in years past!

Centrally located at 6th and Penn Avenues, the beer tent offers a close-up of the main stage music while you sample Fall Fest’s widest variety of seasonal brews. Special guest, Gretz Beer Co. of Norris-town is partnering up with the WRCRF to provide a ten tap truck. Hefeweizen, IPA’s, ciders and seasonals will be featured on tap. If it weren’t for the lack of lederhosen, the scene would almost resemble an Oktoberfest – but in its own “West Reading way,” of course.

Plenty of chances to win raffles all day long – and winners will enjoy beer-brand collectibles and splendid gifts donated by local West Reading businesses. Your chance to play helps to support the West Reading Community Revitalization Foundation (WRCRF), which helps present the borough’s seasonal street fairs, including Fall Fest, happen.

Live MusicBetween the Fall Fest beer tent and main stage of music, the 6th and Penn Avenues intersection in the heart of West Reading’s main street is the place to be. There’s no doubt there will be plenty of room for dancing – dancing in the street!

A West Reading Farmers’ Market mainstay since 2009, B & H Organic Produce keeps their focus on flavor, fun and freshness. Owners and farmers Paul Hartz and Erica Bowers Lavdanski grow their produce on their farm in Morgantown, PA, which is certified organic by Pennsylvania Certified Organic and the USDA.

Specializing in greens, salad greens and kale. They also offer heirloom items, such as tomatoes, peppers and potatoes. And if you are someone who prefers to grow your own garden, B & H Organic Produce offers organic vegetable seedlings.

Erica Bowers Lavdanski was drawn to farming after studying nutrition in college. Erica found herself disenchanted with the idea of working as a nutritionist and decided to apprentice on a farm. After her apprenticeship ended, she worked on several farms and later managed a farm. Eventually Erica, now a resident of West Reading, joined forces with Paul Hartz and B & H Organic Produce was formed.

B & H Organic Produce is at the West Reading Farmers’ Market on all open dates, but their main distribution is through their weekly CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares. Their farm is also the site of Hartz Natural Food and on Saturdays they can be found at Wyebrook Farm.

The garden was originally planted by Jason Smaglinski as a first anniversary gift to his wife, Katie, eleven years ago. Eight years ago, Jason expanded the garden and soon Katie and Jason were gifting flowers to friends and family. Though grateful recipients, friends suggested that they consider selling their artfully arranged bouquets and suddenly a business was born.

The Rustic Bunch has been a West Reading Farmers’ Market participant for the past five years. Interest has blossomed with their customers, who began to request arrangements for offices, special events and weddings. A variety of events and venues are planned this fall. Gloria Urban moves from a featured display in Art Plus to share exhibit space at Say Cheese eatery with fellow painter Robin Bisaccia and photographer Brian Clark. Art with a sea theme will be featured at the West Reading Tavern. Art Plus Second Friday receptions will feature guest artist Lyn Millar September 11, and member jeweler LeAnn Wolf, October 9, with the members’ Off the Beaten Path autumn exhibit. For Fall Fest, on September 19, we will hold art demonstrations and offer visitors an opportunity to paint a sun-catcher or miniature canvas. The highlight this fall is our extensive dis-play of members’ current and previous art work at the Inn of Reading, Sunday, 2-5pm., October 11. Tickets for this gala Wine and Cheese Fundraiser are available at Art Plus Gallery.

New exhibits are hung in January, March, May, July, September and November.
