founded in 1974 originally as an 18-hole course, West Malling Golf Club was designed by the legendary former Open Champion and five time ryder Cup player Max faulkner.the club was acquired in the early 1980s by three golf enthusiasts who grew West Malling into a popular golf destination that is known throughout the south East.

the first major job for these three was to extend and split the course into two and this was achieved in the late eighties. the two courses, spitfire and Hurricane, named in honour of the iconic fighter planes that flew out of the nearby airfield at West Malling during the second World War, are a challenge for all standards of golfer.

in 1995, two of the owners had reached retirement age, however, one still felt he had the drive and ambition to further the club. With this in mind, he introduced the business to his family and together continued to run the club through the millennium.

Having now reached retirement himself he left the business to his family who continue to run the club today. A family run business since 1995, the club still remains very family orientated and invites everyone to come and enjoy what West Malling has to offer.

set within 180 acres, the parkland courses at West Malling Golf Club offer a fair but differing challenge, with water features proving an added hazard for safe passage on both courses.set in the heart of the Kent countryside with fantastic views of the north-downs, West Malling is home to both the spitfire and Hurricane courses, both of which are named after the famed wartime machines that dominated the skies over Kent during the second World War.

Spitfire Coursethe 18-hole, par 70 spitfire course measures 6,135 yards and is a fair challenge to golfers of all abilities. A low scorecard on this course requires straight drives and true shots to avoid the strategically placed bunkers and water features.

the signature hole on the course is the par three 18th which, at only 183 yards, requires a medium to long iron to find the undulating green, but beware of the lake which sits to the left.

Hurricane Coursethe 18-hole, par 67, Hurricane course measures 6,142 yards and, like the spitfire, is a parkland course with undulated fairways.

While the par five, 515-yard tenth is the toughest hole on the course, the 445-yard 18th is the signature hole and resembles the 18th at Augusta. A long par four with a slight dogleg left to right that climbs uphill, beware not to hit the bunker 40 yards from the green if you’re looking to end your round with a low score.

if you have never played at West Malling Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tours.

HURRICANE COURSEHole 1 - Par 4 - 316 YardsA nice gentle opening hole, with a three or four iron or fairway wood for your tee shot, leaving a pitch into a small green, protected by bunkers left and right, and a stream running along the back.

Hole 2 - Par 3 - 164 Yardsthe first of the par three’s a tricky hole depending on the wind direction and can sometimes play quite long. An upturned saucer-shaped green makes it hard to hit as the ball can run off all sides; again the stream comes into play, which runs along the right side.

Hole 3 - Par 4 - 345 YardsA lovely short par four. use a fairway wood from the tee to avoid the two bunkers on the left of the fairway, leaving a medium to short iron into the green which slopes from left to right.

Hole 4 - Par 3 - 168 YardsA picturesque par three, guarded by water at the front and left side, a large oak tree on the right and a bunker back left. Will play longer than it looks so take enough club; you are better off long than short.

Hole 5 - Par 4 - 306 YardsOne of the new holes. A short par 4, played sensibly can yield a good birdie chance.

put the driver away, Mid iron or rescue club from the tee will leave no more than a 9 iron shot into the green. now go a sink that birdie.

Hole 6 - Par 4 - 363 YardsAnother new hole. the longer off the tee, the easier the second shot into a small green. the stream runs round the back and a bunker front right makes this green difficult to hit. Once you are there the green in reasonably flat.

Hole 7 - Par 4 - 386 Yardsthe first of the holes across the road and a chance to open up your shoulders. you can take the driver here and favour the left half of the fairway. A medium to short iron into the green guarded by a large lake is the only danger.

Hole 8 - Par 3 - 156 YardsAfter getting your breath back after the climb up to the seventh tee you are at the highest point of the course. A par three downhill but the wind is normally against you, so take enough club and, although you cannot see them from the tee, the green is guarded by bunkers around the front.

Hole 9 - Par 4 - 383 Yardsdriver from the bag and let it rip down the left side again, avoiding the trees that line the right side of the fairway. use a long or medium iron into the green that has a large tier through the middle and depending where the flag is, a three putt is not uncommon.

Hole 10 - Par 4 - 445 Yardsdriver again and favour the left side of the fairway as the ball will bounce right on landing. A long iron or fairway wood into the green should be enough for a par, with no bunkers on this hole.

Hole 11 - Par 5 - 515 YardsWith this par five, use a driver from the tee, the left half of the fairway is the safer line. the big hitters can go for the green, while the normal golfer has to make the decision whether to lay up short of the stream or go for a carry, which will leave a chip shot into a green that is surrounded by rolling mounds and slopes right to left

Hole 12 - Par 4 - 438 Yardsdriver and again favour the left side of the fairway avoiding the lone bunker on the right. A long iron or fairway wood for your second shot must be played up to the right hand corner of the green as the slope will take the ball to the left.

this is a big, sloping green and an uphill putt is needed to secure your par.

Hole 13 - Par 3 - 143 YardsA deceptive par three, with bunkers left and right. the tee shot needs to be played into the front right corner of the green as the ball will be taken with the contours of the green to the left.

Hole 14 - Par 3 - 145 YardsA tricky par 3. if the pin is on the lower level it is a comfortable short iron, but the two tier green gets narrower as it gets longer, so when the pin is on the upper level it plays very long, to a very small landing area. Good luck.

Hole 15 - Par 4 - 380 Yardsnot too difficult, a left to right dog leg can play a little longer than it looks. fairway wood from the tee to get position at the angle, then a small iron shot into the green.

plenty of room with no hazards round the green.

Hole 16 - Par 4 - 360 YardsLast of the newer holes, but very difficult with out of bounds all down the left side makes the tee shot a pressure shot. fairway wood or long iron for accuracy, try to avoid the bunker on the right of the fairway, still leaves a medium iron shot into the green, which slopes left to right.

Hole 17 - Par 3 - 185 Yardsnearly home, but this long par three will test the best of players. Long iron or fairway wood will be the choice for your tee shot to a green surrounded by four bunkers, sitting lower than the tee.

Hole 18 - Par 4 - 455 Yardsthe final hole is similar to the 18th at Augusta. A long par four, slight dogleg left to right climbing uphill all the way to the green. A driver from the tee, aiming at the bunker on the left of the fairway, will leave a long iron or fairway wood into the green. A bunker some 40 yards short of the green will catch any shot that is under hit. if you manage to find the green, your work is not finished because nowhere on this green will you have a straight or flat putt.

SPITFIRE COURSEHole 1 - Par 4 - 375 Yardsthe spitfire course is the more undulating of the two courses at West Malling and the first on the spitfire is a gentle introduction of what is to come. A three wood is all that’s needed to get you away leaving a short iron into a small green surrounded by rolling mounds.

Hole 2 - Par 4 - 351 YardsA three wood or iron from the tee to the top of the hill will leave a short to medium iron for a blind second shot to a green that lies some 30 feet below, but beware, a steep bank awaits anything that is too long.

Hole 3 - Par 3 - 110 Yardsthe first of the par three’s. Only 110yds but can play half a club more as the tee shot is uphill. favour the right side as the green slopes right to left.

Hole 4 - Par 4 - 443 Yardsthe first of three tough par four’s. stroke index 1 on the card. Get the driver out with the ideal tee shot favouring the right half of the fairway, this will open up the green for the second shot into a two tiered green, which will need a fairway wood, or long iron for the low handicapper. Anything falling short though will bounce right towards the bunker and fir trees.

Hole 5 - Par 4 - 414 YardsA long par four; driver from the tee down the left side as everything will bounce right. if you manage to stay on the fairway you will have a medium to long iron into another two tiered green guarded by a large lake. take more club than you think.

Hole 6 - Par 4 - 444 Yardsthe last of the par four’s on the front nine; driver from the tee will leave a long second shot into a green guarded by two bunkers on the left. the second shot will play very much longer than it looks, and you have the sleepers at the back of the green to help for anything over hit.

Hole 7 - Par 3 - 154 YardsA par three slightly downhill; a short to medium iron should find the green. not too difficult, but you do not want to be long as there is a big slope at the back of the green.

Hole 8 - Par 5 - 493 Yardsthe only par five on the front nine. driver for this blind tee shot aimed towards the bunker on the right at the top of the hill, as everything will kick left. if you are a big hitter you must now make the decision weather to go for the green in two. Alternatively, play an iron for your second shot, short of the stream that guards the green, then chip on. A big slope from back to front, so you do not want to be above the pin for that birdie putt, as many a good player have been embarrassed by putting off the green.

Hole 9 - Par 3 - 208 YardsWe finish the front nine with a long par three. A long iron or fairway wood from the tee to a plateau green. Anything landing short right may run up onto the green, anything left will be swallowed up by the bunkers that guard that side of the green.

Hole 10 - Par 4 - 403 YardsA tough par four to start the back nine. A fairway wood or an iron off the tee as accuracy is important. from the large oak on the left half of the fairway it still leaves a long iron or another fairway wood into a plateau green; favour the right side as the contours will bring any shot in from that side. no bunkers on this hole, but far from easy, with water running the entire length of the hole.

Hole 11 - Par 4 - 318 YardsA good chance for a birdie. the big hitters can drive this green, but for the handicap golfer a drive over the stream will leave a pitch into this two tiered green sloping from back to front.

Hole 12 - Par 5 - 531 Yardsthe next three holes will make or break your round. A tough par five, do you take the water on from the tee, needing a carry of 250yds? the sensible way to play the hole is an iron off the tee, a long iron or fairway wood over the water for your second to the bunker about 80yds from the green, and a pitch to the plateau green should yield a par, but sixes and sevens are easy to find on this hole also.

Hole 13 - Par 5 - 519 YardsAnother par five. drive down the left half of the fairway as everything falls from left to right. your second shot is either a lay up short of the water leaving a medium to long iron into the green, or take on the narrowing landing area of the fairway with a fairway wood, which will leave a pitch into a green that is uphill. Again, sounds easy but big numbers can easily be found.

Hole 14 - Par 4 - 349 YardsAccuracy is a must off the tee with a fairway wood or long iron. the right side of the fairway is ideal; this leaves a medium to short iron into a green that sits some 60 feet above you. favour the right side of the green for your approach as this will help any under hit shots.

Hole 15 - Par 4 - 377 Yardsif you have managed to get through the last three holes in par you’re on for a good score, the 15th is a straight-forward par four hole with no bunkers. driver is fine here, and favour the left half. your second shot will play longer than it looks but do not miss the green left, right, or long.

Hole 16 - Par 3 - 134 YardsA great par three. Only 134yds but depending on the direction of the wind can play anything from a wedge to a five iron. A large bank can help any tee shot pushed out to the right.

Hole 17 - Par 4 - 329 YardsAnother good birdie chance. A fairway wood from the tee favouring the right side to avoid the lone tree on the fairway, and the bunkers that lie down the left. this leaves a pitch into another plateau green, and hopefully a birdie. the only danger is the pond front right of the green.

Hole 18 - Par 3 - 183 Yardsthe home hole but not for the faint hearted. 190yds with a bunker and out of bounds to the right, and a large lake sitting front left and down the side. A good shot is required to find the undulating green and with a medium to long iron you can finish that great round of golf off with a par, but beware of the lake, which attracts any straying golf ball.

there isn’t a golfer on the planet who wouldn’t like to improve some area of their game and those coming to West Malling for instruction and guidance are in very good hands.West Malling is blessed with a strong and talented teaching team and with a umber of qualified professionals there is always someone on hand to assist and advise.

We have several styles of tuition to suit your need from a personal one-to-one lesson to a more relaxed group lesson with other players of a similar standard. Our coaching facilities include a ten-bay driving range, two putting greens, a chipping area with a practice bunker and an indoor golf centre with two full swing simulators.

the teaching team also offer on-course tuition, where technique and the tactical side to the game can be addressed at the same time. Learning the correct thought process can often be an eye-opening and rewarding experience for the novice player and can lead to better scores.

At West Malling Golf Club we are pleased to be involved in Operation pollinator - an exciting initiative to help restore the plight of the bumblebee and other crucial pollinating insects.the initiative aims to establish and manage areas of pollen and nectar-rich wildflower habitat that will provide essential food resources and nesting habitat for pollinators, including native bees, butterflies and other insects.

the selected native wildflowers will also provide new visual features, giving added interest to your round of golf from the environmental diversity it will support.

With the honeybee and other pollinators dying out at an alarming rate, and with nearly one-third of the world’s crops dependant upon honeybees for pollination, it is an issue we cannot hide from.

supported by syngenta along with ecology and environmental specialists from the stri, the project began with relatively small areas, in order to learn the techniques and develop a system that works effectively for us.

We hope that you agree that Operation pollinator is a very worthwhile project for us to be involved with and to develop in the future as part of our environmental and ecological management. the aim is that it will add an extra level of interest and pride in playing our course.
