The Eyes Have It...Episode NineWelcome to 2014.The start of the year has been exciting as we watch the expansion of our Lions Eye Institute (LEI) into their new expanded facility in the Harry Perkins Research Centre. It is an amazing facility and will enhance the ability of our research team to undertake even more exciting ophthalmic trials and research as they continue their never ending work in eliminating the many causes of blindness. Many major business rms, charitable foundations, Lotteries WA and the West Australian Government have joined us to bring this to fruition. Lions can be very proud of their involvement knowing they were the catalyst for establishing rstly the Lions Save-Sight Foundation (LSSF) out of which LEI was spawned leading to where we are today.

Visitation ProgramAt the February board meeting of LSSF, draft guidelines were tabled in regard to re-implementing a program of club visitations to inspect our facility. By the time you read this, we would hope that these guidelines and a booking form will have been sent to every Lions Club in Western Australia.

This will present a great opportunity for Lions, partners and friends to tour the facility and see what your Lions Club has helped to achieve over some 40 years of development having taken up the challenge of Helen Keller in 1925 when she challenged us to become “Knights of the Blind”.When these forms hit the clubs, it is expected there will be an initial rush of bookings. Please understand (and be patient) that we won’t be able to accommodate all club requests in the rst month!!

Equipment TaggingThe fty six clubs (56) who supported our ‘Shopping List” appeal will be duly recognised. Much of the equipment needed is now being purchased and we have agreed on the type of tag that will be obtained and a xed to the item your club purchased. If your club made an undesignated donation we will apply those funds to an item and you will be recognised on this item. Again I thank those clubs who supported our appeal.

Used SpectaclesIn recent weeks I have had two clubs enquire as to what they can do with used glasses they have collected. Please send them to: Lions Save-Sight Foundation (WA) Inc. Level 2, Lions Eye Institute Building,2 Verdun Street, NEDLANDS WA 6009. We would be delighted to receive them.

Annual General MeetingOur AGM is to be held on Wednesday, April 16. Notices of Meeting went out out to all clubs in late February. There is a need for 25 delegates to be present to constitute a quorum. We do urge you to have your compliment of delegates (one delegate for every ten (10) members or greater part thereof ) attend. The notice of meeting has a simple one page return sheet. PLEASE, PLEASE can you complete this form and return it to us.This year the meeting will be held in the new Harry Perkins Research Institute building. It presents a golden opportunity to get a glimpse of this new facility. I do hope we will see you on April 16 and in the meantime, keep exercising those eyes . . .

Cr McManus retold yarns that most of us have heard more than once before, but he did say that the club would be holding their annual Sportsmans Lunch. When, “not sure”?The best way to get any information about club activities was to go to club bugle Geo ‘His Royness’ Warner.

2 WEST LION, April 2014 3April 2014, WEST LION

Congratulations to all the clubs of District 201W2 who contributed towards the positive move on membership numbers in February 2014, which continued to gather momentum in the month of March. I have had the honour and pleasure of inducting several of the new members during our club visits since the start of the New Year and thank the clubs and there members for their dedication and perseverance in attracting new members into our great organisation.

All clubs were asked to make a special e ort during the March Membership Month to attract new members. For every new member that we bring into our clubs, they provide an additional ‘Two Hands’ that are going to lighten the burden on our current members who at times, carry a heavy load in providing the very important services that we provide to our local communities.

Unfortunately, we are not going so well in the search for our future leaders and we are in need of a 2nd Vice District Governor for 2014 / 2015. At the Special Meeting held in Mandurah on February 22, 2014, the position was not lled and we are still in search of a candidate to ll this very important position and lead our District into the future. If you believe that you have a member/s in your club with the potential and enthusiasm to lead our District, encourage them to nd out more about what is involved in the roles and contact either myself or another senior Lion of the District who they would feel con dent in approaching for a discussion.

It was very satisfying to see several new faces attending for the rst time, the Essential Juice Leadership Program that was held in Kudardup in mid February. The Districts GLT Coordinator PDG Bruce Hearman has put a lot of time into developing a very good weekend program that has a lot to o er the participants in not only helping them to understand how to be a more e ective member of their Lions Clubs and in their communities, but also the personal growth and con dence that they can achieve by taking part in the weekend. Unfortunately, we still struggle to get clubs to encourage and support the participation of their members, despite a lot of e ort being put in by the District to make these courses and programs available to the members.

The Katanning cabinet meeting held last month was once again well supported, which resulted in a lengthy cabinet meeting on the Sunday morning, with strong debate and discussion being held on several issues important to our District. The minutes of the meeting have been released to the clubs and are also available on the District website. I encourage all Lions in our District to seriously consider putting your hand up at some stage for a District cabinet position, where you will have the opportunity to take part in the process of deciding the future path of our District and see why it is so important that we continue to have an active and

We are moving towards positive territory

committed cabinet working as one.

One of the decisions that came out of the cabinet meeting, was for District W2 to support the ‘Cat Bus Two Hands advertising campaign’ that is going to be run in Perth for four weeks over March as part of the March Membership Month Campaign from District W1. We will be applying for a $1,000 grant from Multiple District, which must be matched by an equivalent $1,000 from our District to go towards the advertising campaign. As this advertising could also bring in new members for our District and bene t us all, it is important for us to support it.

During May 2014, the ‘Beyond Blue Roadshow’ will be coming through parts of our State in a campaign to stimulate awareness of ‘depression and mental health’ issues in Australia. At the January 2014 ‘council of governors meeting’, it was approved by all the Governors for Lions Clubs around Australia to be asked to support the roadshow and try to assist with the functions that they run in the communities. A memo is being sent out to all the clubs about the roadshow and their timetable, with the Beyond Blue coordinator contacting the clubs personally regarding the functions planned and the assistance they will be requesting.

You are going to hear more about a new project being supported by the Lions Club of Albany, which will involve an aluminium dinghy / tinnie on a trailer being towed around Australia (including Tasmania) behind a motorbike. The three guys involved in this epic journey will be inducted into the Albany Lions Club in March and will be raising funds for diabetes research and treatment. They are hoping to complete the journey in approximately eighty (80) days and will be asking Lions Clubs around Australia to support them in ways such as organising a function in their local community to greet them and provide an overnight location to secure their

gear and pitch a tent where needed. The Albany Club will be contacting the DG’s and clubs around Australia individually, with timetables and asking for their support. The project was put past the council of governors at the January 2014 meeting in Sydney, who all agreed to ask their Districts to support the project.

With the 2014 Children of Courage presentation coming up fast for April and the process to nd our State Leo of the Year and Youth of the Year nalists in full swing, we need all the clubs and their members to get behind these incredible projects and assist our respective District chairpersons in making sure that our District is well represented. I am sure that the members of our District who will be going over to the Tamworth MD Convention in May will give our State representatives in the Leo of the Year and Youth of the Year nals their full support and attendance during the presentations.

As the last of our cClub visitations are getting closer and with the Tamworth Convention only two months away, the year is starting to run away. But there is still a lot that can be achieved over the remaining quarter of this Lions year, including identifying our future leaders, the formation of a new Lions Club in the Spearwood area, continuing to attract and invite new members into our organisation and continuing to work on making our District 201W2, a District that is moving forward down a positive and productive path to becoming the shining light of Australian Lions.

We look forward to our next meeting with you and continuing to hear about the incredible work that you are all achieving in your communities.

Prime position can be hard to ll

DG Alan Hawkins presents Roni Linley with her chevron.

The secretaries job is a tough one to ll, just ask Mandurah Lion Graham Madigan who had a tough time getting someone to ll the key position he had to pull out all stops to secure a replacement for retiring hon. sec. PCC Ian Kelly and this problem had drawn the attention of Roni Linley a Millbridge Lion who said that her club went through a similar problem.

“I also noted you (Mandurah) have di culty getting someone to do the secretary’s job. It’s the same with our club, and I found out, also with Albany club. “I think they’re all getting the idea that it takes over your life,” Roni said.

The DG’s visit to Millbridge was an exciting event for me. DG Alan presented me with a 15-year charter membership chevron.

Hello again and welcome to this months West Lion.I was starting to think that most of the hard work for the year had been done, but the next few months are full of opportunities to serve. I have continued to visit the clubs in the district and I am always welcomed and enjoy the chance to meet and nd out about the individual clubs.

Back in October 2012, I received an e-mail from a young lady, Kate Archibald, wanting to join the Duncraig Lions Club. She had seen us in action at sausage sizzles at Bunnings where she worked part time, Kate is studying, at University, to become a teacher.

Kate joined Lions in December 2012 so I asked another young member in Katy Fulker to sponsor her. Katy has been a member for nine years, joining us when she was 18, since then qualifying as a teacher.

What a breath of fresh air young people bring to a club. Katy has been to District Conventions with us,

Colin’s ConversationAs I write this, our media campaign is underway, with advertisements on the back of two CAT Buses, which are regularly travelling through Perth during March, and also a sign on the electronic display in the underground tunnel between the Perth stations. I have seen them and they look great. IT Chairman Ron has posted some photos on our website and also on Facebook.

As has been mentioned in previous reports, April has been designated “Family and Friends” month. There will be many opportunities in this month and those following for us to get out and interact with many members of our communities through our projects and events which will take place. The Lions Lunch Relay is being held on the 4th of April, ”Walk For An Aussie Kid”to raise funds for The Childrens Mobility Foundation is on April 6, the Youth of The Year state Final is being held on April 12, Children of Courage is on April 13 and the other functions planned by the clubs will showcase us and our service. April is also the month to hold the “Biggest Barbeque”to raise funds for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation.

April is also the month that the Beyond Blue roadshow commences its travels through our State and our Districts. Lions has partnered with Beyond Blue to take the message about depression and its consequences, and also ways to deal with it,to many areas of Australia. They would like Lions in these areas to assist and also take the chance to gain some recognition.

The run up to the end of the Lionistic year will also see the Multiple District Convention In Tamworth, Incoming o cers training in May and our District Awards night in June. I might have to have a little lay down to get ready.

Lions International is also started the preliminary planning for the Centenary of Lions International in 2017.This is also the 70th year of Lionism in Australia.Details will soon start to arrive at your clubs so as to allow you all to plan your celebration of this great organisation we all belong to.

As always”Follow your Dreams”while “Building The Future With Pride”

Colin Heap,201W1 District Governor

Younger members volunteeringhas also travelled to Multiple District Conventions. Kate on the other hand has gone along another track, Lions has motivated her to join other organisations!” Last year she was awarded a scholarship from Edith Cowan University to attend the 4th University Scholars Leadership Symposium in Humanitarian A airs in the Philippines. Kate said that was by far the most personally enriching experience she has ever had. To quote “I can personally tell you that the feeling you get from helping others is unlike any other”. Yes, how true!

Her latest sojourn to Newcastle, Australia, was assisting the mens basketball team at the Special Olympics Asia Paci c Games.

Kate said it was wonderful to see so many people cheering Team Australia and all the other worldwide amazing athletes.

So, I am sure, you will hear more about Duncraig’s two “K’s” namely Kate and Katy, they are a pleasure to have around.

Australind Lions were out in full force to host the Activ Foundation’s fth annual adults with disabilities olympics at Ridley Place in Australind on Sunday, March 16.

Members were aghast after all the goodbyes to the olympians and families ve years ago... with see you next year. What? Yes as far as the olympians were concerned these olympics were going on forever. What was going to be a one o olympics has now developed into one of the best projects the club has undertaken.

Australind outlay around $1000 to supply food, drinks and sporting equipment and not to forget the trophies (medals) each year.

More than 100 families and olympians joined in the fun. Activities include . . . egg and spoon race, quoits, cricket, gopher, electric wheel chair race, toss the wellington boot and everyones favourite colouring in competition.

The olympians are full of praise for all team mates but can’t wait for the nal presentations.Club president Mac Canale ably assisted with partner and club member Dianne to hand out trophies to the event winners. Every olympian gets a trophy (medal).

Lions members are on hand to erect the tents set the running track and cricket pitch, everyone gets to bat and prepare the food and soft drinks. Ice cream is a winner with every one.

It is not unusual to win more than one medal. Excitement ooses from the faces after the trophy presentation.

Pencil in next year it is one not to be missed.

The screening bus is available, unless otherwise booked, to attend events to screen people’s hearing levels free of charge. In the last Lion year we screened 1128 people with almost 60% of people being referred for further testing.

The Foundation now has the new bus available and all we require is electricity and a quiet spot. We do have a generator available if electricity is not available but charge $20 to cover the cost of the fuel.

If you think this service could be of interest to those running the large event, please get in touch with Chris Smelt.

With the new Lions Hearing Foundation screening bus now able to be used more often we are looking at having a larger roster of testers available.Training takes place at the Ear Science Institute Australia, Subiaco and lasts about two hours on a date to be arranged. Can you please check with your members to see if they or their family and friends are available to assist?

At the end of the last nancial year, Lion Simon Watters resigned as Chairman of the Lions Hearing Foundation after six years at the helm.

The Board decided to award him a Life Membership of the Foundation in recognition of his leadership. He was a decisive and persuasive supporter of the new screening bus, and also the work that we do with helping children to hear again, by donating FM Systems for classroom assistance, as well as cochlear implant assistance, and the donations we make to children named on Commonwealth Health Cards who require audiological testing.

On Thursday, December 5 2013, the Ear Science Institute Australia (ESIA) held their End of Year Party and Simon was invited. He was on the Board of the ESIA up until the end of June.

Dr Brett Robertson gave Christina Smelt permission to present this award to him during the formal part of the evening. Simon was clearly pleasantly surprised to be given this award in the presence of his wife Cathy and the many people he has worked with.

Over the years, the Lions Clubs of WA have been very supportive of the Lions Hearing Foundation and, in particular, the Lions Hearing Screening Bus. The Foundation has been very grateful for all your donations which have included the help to purchase our new bus.

In year 2012-13, the bus carried out 1128 testings plus 80 WorkCover testings for industry over a period of 40 days and with a referral rate of 56%. We have visited Geraldton to Esperance and most areas in between. In the 2013-14 year Lion Year we have carried out more than 500 testings up to date.

Apart from travelling around the State to provide free hearing screenings, the Foundation also

supports the costs for audiological tests for children who are named on a Commonwealth Health Card. We contributed $17,000 to this very worthwhile cause in the Lions 2012-13 nancial year.

The Foundation has also supported the research program at the Ear Science Institute Australia into the connection between people with undiagnosed hearing problems and alzheimers. This is a huge program consisting of 2000 people.

When you are considering your donations for 2014, please consider the Lions Hearing Foundation. Your money will be used to support the screening bus and families around WA.

On Saturday, March 8, a fundraising event was held at the Back Beach, Bunbury, to support Breast Cancer Care WA Inc.

The Big Bra Link event was organised by Leah Rando-Poller, her husband and many friends. Leah is a 45-yr-old Bunbury school teacher who was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2013, resulting in a double mastectomy, but without requiring any chemo, radiation or hormone therapy. Leah has considered she was one of the ‘lucky ones’ and has a desire to give back and put her energy into something positive to help others through a similar journey, so came up with the idea of the Big Bra Link, whereby donations of unwanted bras and nancial donations could be passed on to Breast Cancer Care WA Inc.

The Millbridge Lions were asked to provide a sausage sizzle on the day, which they did, and all of the club proceeds on the day were donated to the cause.

Pictured are Lions Stephanie and David Atkins, Andrea Thomas, Maureen Walton and Arthur Linley, with Lion Roni also in attendance, behind the camera.

Breast Cancer research fundraiser

The Millbridge Lions Club would like to bring to the attention of the plight of a local Eaton family (Davies) and a request for you to consider a donation to their family fund. The following story has the support of DG Alan Hawkins.

Nikki Davies is an ex-member of our club (due to the following circumstances) who along with her husband Jarrod and their children Erin 11, twin boys Leo and Dean eight were involved in a tragic car accident (Jarrod was driving) on their way to Esperance during the Easter School holidays in 2012.

As a result of the accident the whole family were rushed to PMH and Royal Perth Hospitals with a variety of injuries, the outcome and ongoing e ects for this family are as follows:

• Jarrod – has suff ered brain damage causing him to have mild seizures along with subsequent exhaustion, he is also struggling with depression which a ects his ability to work now and in the foreseeable future. As a result of this a claim has been lodged against his TPD insurance which will e ectively pay out their mortgage but may take 12 to 18 months to process.

• Nikki and Leo are both physically okay with no ongoing e ects other than sheer exhaustion for Nikki as Jarrod, Dean and Erin’s full time carer. Nikki still runs the household and commutes everyone to their ongoing appointments in both Bunbury and Perth.

Millbridge Lions launch nancial fund for ex-member

• Erin – received minor physical injuries from the accident but is struggling with severe post- traumatic stress syndrome (both anxiety and depression) and must be monitored closely.

• Dean – suff ered major brain damage which requires him to have 24/7 care, to his credit, determination and the tireless e orts of his supportive family and therapists he has learnt to walk again after 15 months, been toilet trained and can also feed himself. The irony of this though is Dean was diagnosed in June 2013 with Type 1 diabetes and epilepsy.

The family have over the last two years been battling to sustain themselves, pay their mortgage along also with their substantial medical bills with a minimal income.

Unfortunately the family they were given the wrong advice to default on their mortgage in order to lodge a claim for nancial hardship on Jarrod’s superannuation which in turn has had the bank threaten foreclosure on February 24, 2014.

The family have been working closely with the bank over the period of time and have recently enlisted the services of a lawyer who is in the process of negotiating with the bank to extend their foreclosure deadline along also with lodging a claim with the ICWA (Nikki and Dean are required to sue Jarrod in order for this to occur) for $60k as part payment for

Nikki’s care of Dean over the last two years (this payment will be deducted from Dean’s claim

payment which he won’t receive until he is around 25). Apparently this is common practice with the legal representative con dent the partial claim will be successful, although it will take around two to three months to process.

Summing up the situation the family are, in the short term, in dire need of some further nancial assistance to tide them over until the part payment comes through for Nikki, which will then hopefully see them through until Jarrod’s TPD funds are released and they can extinguish the debt of their family home.

The Millbridge Lions Club donated $2000 to the fund at our meeting on February 18 and are currently applying for funds through the ALF to match this.

We would greatly appreciate if your club could see its way to make a donation to assist Nikki, Jarrod, Erin, Leo and Dean during this tough time.

Donations can be made by cheque payable to the Lions Davies Donation Account or by direct debit: BSB 086-554 Acct: 17-765-4982.

–Stephanie Atkins,President, Millbridge Lions Club

I hope the pictures explain what they did with the donated bras, I believe over 2,000 in total, and after the event, the bras were to be sent on to third world countries to be donated to women living in dire poverty.

The South Western Times placed an article on the event in their edition Thursday, March 13, with some photos of the organiser Leah, and the crowd.

We were (and are) hoping to get more of a pro le in the community, so it was a tad disappointing from that point of view, although we were more than happy to help out and enjoyed the experience..as always.

Elijah Rose and his wife Ruth were bothchildren of leprosy patients in India and so theystarted New Hope a road for relief in 1985. Asopposed to other charities New Hope has anopen door policy where they don’t turn awayanyone in need - from orphaned beggars, to themany leprosy su erers and HIV/AIDS womenand children who are outcast by society. Albanyhouse wife Lyn Madigan was one of the travellingparty and brings us a peephole view about

New Hope. Lyn is available to address Lions Club meetings. She can be contacted viaemail: [email protected]

New Hope has established community centres, schools and leprosy colonies as well as hospices for the increasing number HIV/AIDS victims in India and also a surgical hospital in Orissa which specialises in cataract surgery for the tribal areas.

New Hope provides health care and education to some of the most remote and disenfranchised people in India including many disabled people and children and those living in abject poverty working from the remote community centre at Muniguda, Orissa.

Maggie Nolan OAM from Broome in WA visited India about 25 years ago and became involved with this organisation. In those very early days Maggie spent so much time in remote villages, many of them she had to walk a day or more to reach. Maggie Sister,

Leprosy su erers and HIV/AIDS victimsturn to New Hope for assistance

as she is known to many used her valuable nursing experience delivering babies, helping leprosy patients etc.

Maggie Sister was the rst white woman seen by many remote villagers. She has raised many thousands of dollars and she and her partner Allan McMullan were instrumental in setting up New Hope Australia where he is presently chairman of the board. Maggie was awarded an order of Australia in 2000 in recognition of her untiring work with New Hope.

This year saw the inaugural bike rally for New Hope. Eighteen West Australians, including seniors from Broome and Albany met at Visakhapatnam and

travelled to Kothavalesa where they were met by the beaming faces of the children and sta who live at the orphanage.

The welcome party was a little emotional as the children hung garlands around the visitors necks, took their hands and with huge smiles said “welcome auntie”.

Such beautiful children who have nothing material but huge smiles and lots of love. The sta at Kothavalesa certainly looked after the Australian visitors. Nothing was too much trouble. It was a four day stay and during this period there was time to paint, make secure goat yards, reticulate and enjoyed time with the children who were so eager to help.

During the 18 days of the bike rally over 800ks were travelled, much of that on trains, buses, tuk tuks and cars and of course the bikes!!

The visitors spent some time at Muniguda where New Hope has the only centre for special children with challenging needs, a surgical hospital for the tribal villagers with eye problems and care for the aged.

Muniguda is the rst community established by New Hope. Visits were made to tribal villages and leprosycolonies as well as time spent at the New Hope communities. The love and care given by New Hope to these people in need is outstanding and the vision for the future by the director

Elijah Rose along with money raised through New Hope Australia will see this continue well into the future.

Lions of Lake Grace have had a busy start to the year in 2014. At their normal meeting on January 23 the club decided by members that monies raised from community donations received at the Australia Day breakfast hosted by Lions and held at the swimming pool on 26/01/2014 would be used to assist local couple Liam Fyfe and his partner Vanessa Tavares who lost all their possessions in a house re.

The re destroyed the rented property situated in Banksia Place, Lake Grace on the evening of Saturday, December 14, 2013 and although the local brigade was in attendance they were unable to save the building or any of the contents leaving the young couple with only the clothes they stood in. In typical country spirit family members and the community rallied around donating household furniture, clothes and all the necessities needed daily to continue on with normal life until they could start gathering their own possessions again.

From the generosity shown by the community on Australia Day the Lions were able to present Vanessa and Liam with a cheque for $1,500 this month to assist them with the process of rebuilding there lives as they moved into their new home.

The Lions of Lake Grace are proud to be part of the community that continues to support those locals who need a helping hand to recover from this kind of setback.

We wish Vanessa and Liam all the best as they continue on life’s journey.

Markets to meet community needs

When Maylands Lions club eventually received approval to establish their own market they went about it in a very big way. The rst Maylands hawker markets, held on January 26, 2014, were a huge success and the club is hoping to keep up the momentum. There were somewhere between 1500 and 2000 people over the course of the event.

During the market the community was asked to comment on a large whiteboard. Market attendees went further and ‘liked’ other people’s comments with a tick against items they agreed with. The slogan at the top read “WE WANT THIS MARKET TO MEET YOUR NEEDS. TELL US WHAT YOU LIKE. WHAT COULD WE DO BETTER? The club members really communicated with their public and developed a Facebook page—it shows 1602 ‘likes’.

The market is held every Saturday from 4:30pm to 8pm, (except when the venue is booked for other events). Each stall holder must provide evidence of a current food licence for Maylands council and a current insurance certi cate.

Coordinator Catherine Ehrhardt says there is a really great buzz in this very vibrant market.

It has always been a tradition for the Lions Members and Partners of District 201W2 attending the Annual MD Convention to get together for some friendship and fellowship at a selected time and venue during the Convention.

It has become almost impossible to t in a 201W2 District Function at the Tamworth MD Convention with the full program and functions they have in place, so I have accepted CC Gary Parkers o er to have our District Function at the Equine Centre on Sunday night, with the main meal and some drinks covered by the District.

The program for this year’s MD Convention in Tamworth is very full, with all the evenings taken up with functions that will be attended by various members of our District and the daytime Sessions allowing very little time to meet and relax. The only possible times that are available, are for us to meet on Saturday during the lunch break and later

Members of District 201W2 attending the Tamworth Convention

on Saturday afternoon at the completion of the afternoon sessions, before we all head o for our evening functions.

In both cases, we are limited to 1 hour, which will include the travelling time to and from the venue we choose and that is hoping that the Convention Program runs to schedule. I don’t believe that that these are good options that will allow us su cient time to relax and socialise.

The alternative that I have decided to pursue after discussion with several senior Lions, who will be attending in Tamworth, is for us to take up the invitation of our CC Gary Parker and have our District Function at the Equine Centre Function on the Sunday Night. The local Lions have arranged for a special show to be put on for all the Conventioneers at the Equine Centre by the local horseman with FREE entry.

There will be su cient room in the venue for us to hold our own Function and there will be food and drinks available to be purchased at a reasonable price. As the District Governor has an allocated budget from the District to spend on providing such a Function at a MD Convention, the proposal is to provide for those in attendance from the District as follows:

• The cost of your main meal will be covered by District (a good deal has been o ered).

• A limited cash amount will be put on the bar to provide for the initial drinks.

A notice with details of the District Function will be given to each member who attends when they register with the District Cabinet Secretary, Lawrie Carr in Tamworth.

“As a relatively new member of the Kalamunda club, I sat at meetings, listening in awe, of the projects, aims and achievements of Lions. As time went on, I started to talk to people who I thought might like to get involved in Lions. Often the reaction was, “Who?”or, “Are they still going?”

My business brings me in touch with a lot of DIY and artistic people and a number of them mentioned that they were entering various competitions. A few years ago, the Shire of Kalamunda instigated the construction of a cultural centre and art gallery called the “ZIG ZAG” cultural centre. A visit to this beautiful gallery blew me away . . . an idea was born.

I proposed that we should sponsor an art competition, the proposal was accepted 100%. It was all go.

The Director of the Zig Zag gallery, Marilyn Keys, thought it was a great idea and gave it her full support and the support of the Kalamunda Shire. Without Marilyns support, the awards would not have been possible.

We decided that entrants would have to reside within

Kalamunda Lions Club Art Awards

the Shire boundaries. All pieces entered in the competition had to be produced in the 2013 calendar year.

Some great posters were produced and all members took a bundle and they were displayed all around the shire, we had spots on local radio and we got great support from the local press. We manufactured some wonderful trophies and certi cates which, of course, featured Lions and these, we understand, are now collector’s items.

We were able to put our name out there for some eight months. Will this bring us new members? Who knows? (if we are doing a sausage sizzle, these people will buy two, I’m sure!)

We took the idea to a number of local business people and their response was magni cent. As you can appreciate, there was a considerable cost in running the Art Awards and their contributions greatly minimised the cost for our club and we thank them sincerely.

The immediate response from the community was that “It was fantastic”, and, “Will it be annual event?”

The Kalamunda Lions Club has now agreed that it will be annual event.

Did we achieve our aim to get the Lions name back out there? WE SURE DID”

Youth Exchange: A family a airLions Australia is currently looking for host families to host more than 120 international youth exchangees visiting our country in July-August.

Applications are also open for Australian youth aged 16-21 years wishing to travel overseas in December-January to exciting destinations including Europe, Canada, USA, Japan, NZ, etc.

One Lion who has experienced both sides of Youth Exchange is Atwell Lions’ Charter Member Wendy Hope. Wendy grew up in New Zealand and she remembers fondly being part of the “Lions family” and club projects from a young age. Her father was a Charter Member of the May eld and Districts Club 202J.

Wendy’s family hosted two international youth exchangees from Australia and the USA in their NZ home. “I remember their funny accents”, says Wendy. Soon afterwards, Wendy’s older brother, Robin, applied for youth exchange to Australia and was hosted in WA. He enjoyed his visit so much that he later moved to and settled in WA. When she turned 18, it was Wendy’s turn to travel with Lions Youth Exchange to Australia to live with Lions families in northern Queensland. She remembers the strict code of conduct expected of NZ youth exchangees - “ No smoking, no alcohol, and no wearing jeans whilst travelling”. Dress standards were rather formal back then.

Wendy eventually moved to WA, joined Lions, and last year decided to give another youth the unique experience Lions Youth Exchange o ers. Wendy, husband Steve and daughter Emily hosted Italian girl, Alessia, in July on behalf of the Lions Club of Atwell.

“Hosting an international youth is very memorable for the immediate family, friends, Lions and a community. The year 2013 will always be remembered as the year Alessia lived in our home. I am sure our family’s involvement with Lions Youth Exchange has not stopped. The younger members of our extended family will be encouraged to participate and we will no doubt become involved as host parents again.”

Muscular Dystrophy Western Australia and The Duke of Edinburgh’s award invitationMuscular Dystrophy Western Australia is currently the only organisation in WA that is enabling The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award to young people with muscular dystrophy.

This is a ground breaking scheme that is helping to break down the barriers of inaccessibility and pave the way for many more young people who live with a disability to engage in life changing experiences. Currently, there is no such scheme in Western Australia and only one nationwide that enables individuals with muscular dystrophy to participate in the internationally renowned award, and engage in the community in such a way.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a self-developmental award that encourages young people between the ages of 15-25 to develop skills focused around self-belief, self-con dence, community engagement, physical activity, adventure and personal challenge, by participating in activities in four speci c sections of development.

Skill, physical recreation, service and volunteering and participating on an adventurous journey

Young people with muscular dystrophy, are con ned to electric wheelchairs and require 24 hour a day physical care. Due to the gradual degeneration

of their cardiac and respiratory muscles, many of them are unlikely to live past the age of 30. Individuals with such severe physical limitations are often not expected to achieve remarkable things and challenge themselves. It is our mission to change this!

The successful 2014 pilot project currently supports six young people with muscular dystrophy accomplish things they never thought possible. The pilot program has paid for such things as specialised equipment so that the participants can take part in sailing, power sports, hover crafting, speed boating and many more otherwise inaccessible activities.

All six young people completed an adventurous journey which saw them stay away from the familiar comforts of home for two nights, something that some of them had never experienced before. The journeys ranged from staying in chalets on farm stays, Rottnest island cultural trips, and a road trip to Margaret River and Military Base expeditions. The award o ers an avenue for these young people to be part of club’s and the community that they live in, it encourages them to help and give back to the community and feel like a valued member of the society that are a part of. This is something that they rarely have the opportunity to do, as they are

often the ones who are being helped. By o ering these individual’s opportunities to give back to the community it gives them value and self-worth, something that every young person deserves to feel.

Please join us by attending the networking reception on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at The Muscular Dystrophy Western Australia O ce. The evening will showcase the amazing accomplishments of the pilot program, and highlight the importance that the program continues. Short presentation’s will be made by Lead researchers of muscular dystrophy, the CEO of muscular dystrophy WA, The Executive o cer of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award WA, and most importantly you will be able to mingle and speak with the six participants of the pilot program.

201 W2 District Chairman PDG Peter Lamb told the West Lion, “We are in urgent need of some donations from W2 clubs to help meet our targeted budget of $25,000 for 20113/14 during the Lionistic year ending June 30, 2014. Currently we only have $13,052,92 or 52% of our budget with less than 3 1/2 months to go although the close o date is allegedly 31st March.

“Our donations towards the Measles – One Shot – One Life initiative is also way down with only $2,551.29 donated towards our budgeted total of $10,000 – so please, can we take this to all club presidents and get the ball rolling?

“It about now that clubs think seriously about their excessive nances, please consider LCIF.” Lawrie Carr 201W2 cabinet secretary said, “It appears to me (in simple terms) that as a District we would need to make a combined donation $12,000 to LCIF to meet our target. This equates to approx $170 for each club?

“A further $7,500 for the District to meet its target of $10,000.(for the One shot – One life Initiative) --- or approximately $110.00 per club.

Help needed from W2 clubs to support budget

“Rather than wait until the end of the Lion year to make your donations – why not send $280.00 from each club to meet both of the above District targets.

“It is only a suggestion as I know that many clubs have commitments to various other worthy causes.

I leave it in your capable hands to make your clubs decisions,” Lawrie concluded.

In a report to MD Lions LCIF chairman Nigel Geny stated, “The results of donations to LCIF to February 28, 2014 have been circulated to the LCIF Co-ordinators. Several Districts are getting near to their budget. The deadline to reach our District budgets is May 31. I am sure many are that close they will reach their goal by the end of March 31, Let’s make it happen.

“Our Lions global project ‘One Shot, One Life – Lions Measles Initiative’ will be promoted during World Immunisation Week, April 23 to 30, 2014.

Lions received an email article titled ‘Making Measles History’ from LCIF recently. As suggested I am going to adapt the article for Australian listeners and send

it to the ABC National radio AM program. In the past the ABC have had segments on Measles outbreaks overseas and in Australia, so I may have a chance to get our ‘One Shot, One Life – Lions Measles Initiative’ on air.

You can approach your local newspapers and FM radio stations to promote ‘One Shot, One Life – Lions Measles Initiative during World Immunisation Week.

During the month of April 2014 all donations to ‘One Shot, One Life – Lions Measles Initiative’ will be matched dollar for dollar by Lion Aruna Oswal and her family up to a total gift of US$5,000. This gift is in addition to the dollar for dollar donation matching by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development.

Please ask every club in your District to make a donation to eliminate measles and rubella and save children’s lives.”

Jack and Kath LezCras celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on the 12th of March, 2014

Jack and Kath of the Lions Club of Whitford have clocked up 74 years of service between them, now that surely sums up our motto ( We Serve ).

Although Kath has only recently become a Lion proper she has always given her time to lions and has been available for any community project that has needed her service, and has cut up more than her fair share of onions and tomatoes.

A Pair of Lions celebrating their 65th Wedding AnniversaryPDG Jack LeCras OAM has always served on the board of the Whitford Lions Club and has served in all capacities except for secretary (smart man), Jack has been and still is a driving force for the club arranging most of the activities and Bbq.

Bookings including collecting supplies delivering and working the Bbq, as well as serving on committees such as Relay for life etc. but can still nd time to cut someone’s grass if needed.

His Royness made a name for himself when he and fellow Lion Mike Manley made a grand entrance into the auditorium at the W-Districts Convention at Karrinyup, only problem was that His Royness ended up at at the business session of W2 Lions. Roy and Mike were quickly ushered out. Since that error of judgement His Royness has been squeeky clean. So we at The Swamp tracked down the retired abacus.

“Tell us please your Royness the what, when, where and why all things about the 2014 Sportsmans Lunch? “No probs,” his Royness blurted. “This year the event will be held at the Claremont Yacht Club on Friday, May 9, Guest Speaker is Bradley ‘George’ Hogg and tickets are available at $95pp,” His Royness told us.To cut a long story short we have included an advert in this edition. Go to it.

Old computers go on line again

Pictured left to right is Murray Fletcher, Tony Palotta and Ross LaSpina.

A PERTH charity is saving hundreds of old computers from land ll by restoring and shipping them overseas to schools in disadvantaged countries.

Murray Fletcher and the Lions Club of Perth (Host) are managing the project from a warehouse in Bassendean, where they wipe hard disks, download new program’s and pack hundreds of computers on a pallet for shipping.

Lion Murray said one man’s trash could be a disadvantaged child’s treasure. “The computers generally come from schools, government departments and hospitals that get new and updated ones,” he said “But it’s great for schools in Africa, which have never seen a computer.

“Recently the team packed a pallet of 24 computers for Kenya. Following that order the volunteers will send their biggest shipment of 350 computers to Cameroon in West Africa.‘’By the end of this year we would have sent shipments to Tanzania, Kenya, Papua New Guinea and Cameroon,” Murray said.

“Generally we send the computers to schools and orphanages who use them to increase education.” It cost about $50 to restore and produce one. fully operating computer. programs as well as the warehouse space are provided by Technology Assisting Disability WA.

To donate an old computer or for more information visit www.tadwa.org.au or call 9379 7400.

Shipping space problem

City of Perth Lions Club (Host) has donated an assortment of goods that includes computers, printers and a projector to Go Ye Therefore and OneWorld Africa, two NGOs whose aim is to improve education delivery in Zambian schools. OWA has in the past ve years been working with Zambian schools in a project called Education Support Network which has assisted in the provision of ICTs such computers in secondary schools. Further, OWA has with the support of IICD our partners based

“No Problem.” says City of Perth Lions Club. A shipping space problem with 400 school desks has been solved by cutting the desk frames in half and engineering them for easy reassembly when they arrive in Africa. This will allow City of Perth club to ship the 400 desks plus 150 computers in one container when the unmodi ed desks occupied two containers with no room for computers, this turned out to be a great result.

The City of Perth Lions Club continues to ship donated computers and desks across the globe. They have overcome issues of space by thinking “outside the box” to ensure that as many needed items reach their destination as economically as possible.

City of Perth Lions Club are always looking for volunteers to assist them with this project. If you or anyone in your club, would like to help out, give president Tony Pallotta or secretary Murray Fletcher a call or send an email. You can nd their details in your 2013/2014-Lions Diary page 24.

City of Perth Lions donate to OWA and GYTin the Netherlands built the capacity to over 100 teachers in ten secondary schools in Zambia.

From 2012, OWA in collaboration with Go Ye Therefore, a Zambia based NGO is rolling out the catalyst project in primary and community schools in the four of Zambia’s provinces namely copper belt, central, Lusaka and southern.

The catalyst project seeks to equip primary and community schools in rural areas of Zambia with ICTs and further seeks to build the capacity of

primary and community school teachers in using ICTs in Education. The program is well supported by the Zambian Government. It is with the above background that OWA and GYT has with the help of partners in Australia received 160 computers that are meant to be used in the Catalyst Project. The other sector that is earmarked are women farming groups.

President Jill Middlemass (above right) presents Immediate Past President of Ballajura Lions Club Kaye Scandrett with an International President’s Club Excellence Award for her remarkable year’s service during the 2012-13 Lionistic year.

The Hope in a Boat project being supported by the Lions Club of Albany has the support of the W-Districts DGs will be kicking o from Albany in about June and going up the West Coast rst.

If you need any more information, please contact myself or Albany Cllub President Frank Bailey.

The project was o cially launched late in March and the video of the launch is on the Facebook Page of both the District and Multiple District Websites.

Our major bene ciary is Diabetes Research Foundation of Western Australia (DRFWA) who are assisting with planning and publicity.

Guy, Glen and Marina (the team riders) have been invited to join Albany Lions Club and will be inducted 13/03/2014.

WHERE, WHY AND WHAT.When are we leaving Albany? Our target date is the rst or second of June 2014 based on seasonal weather conditions in Tasmania and ferry access.

How many in the party? Two Goldwing motorcycles(towing a small boat and trailer) plua one pillion passenger. Also one support vehicle. (We don’t know how many support crew for sure right now but two Albany Lions are on the short list.)

Who is driving? Guy Cook is our motorcyclist with the boat and Glen Hurst with the trailer. But Guy says it is not about the rider but rather about the cause.

Hope in a BoatWhere did the idea come from? A couple of years ago there was the need to take a Valued parcel by trailer from Albany to Queensland and in doing so it was discovered trailers for motorcycles are expensive but they found a Bulldog Folding trailer second hand and with a small boat, it did the job required.

These trailers are considered a short range trailer but this trailer did 10,000km. During the journey it was discovered that the boat attracted a lot of attention. It was thought that this interest could be used for a good project. The idea was brought to Albany Lions Club Inc. and has developed into this major fund raising project.

Why are Albany Lions Club doing it? To raise funds for Diabetes Research and raise the awareness of the work done by the Lions Clubs and for Australia to be more aware of Albany WA, Depending on the response form Guinness World of Records we may also achieve a world record in the name of Albany Lions Club.

Why did we choose DRFWA? Diabetes is on the increase.

Because Diabetes and the complications associated with diabetes does a ect an increasing amount of people in Australia and around the world. Some of our own Lions Club and team members have both family members and themselves currently a ected by Diabetes. At the current rate of increase too many Australians will be Diabetic in this generation. DRFWA is a Western Australian Foundation (but their research helps the world). DRFWA has recently

announced that they are on the verge of nding a cure for type 2 Diabetes. So if we all fund raise we can help DRFWA stop the alarming increase of type two Diabetes and to nd a permanent cure.

Plans are well in hand for the Myalup Pines committee to apply for a grant through LCIF to bolster drinking water infrastructure, purchase mobile re- ghting equipment and three phase to the electric junction box for power supply. The announcement was made by PDG Terry Gray at a recent committee meeting of the Myalup Pines board.

But that was only one of the issues the committee has to deal with. Maintenance o cer PDG Arthur Bushe-Jones told the meeting that there was sagging in one of the cottage ceilings and a evidence of old white ant infestation in the roofs, walls and ooring of cabin 4.

Prices were discussed and treasurer PDG Peter Lamb explained the alterations would need to wait until nance was available. It was suggested that the committee organise a busy bee that would see clubs o ering their help on weekends. PDGs Terry Gray and Arthur Bushe-Jones were putting their heart and soul into the Myalup Pines project but they could only do so much.

Assistant secretary Judy Forsyth suggested that busy bees had been called on before and even the idea of clubs adopting a cottage. Adopting a cottage is a good idea, getting clubs to volunteer was another. Perhaps several clubs could pitch in together to make the load easier to handle. There are seven cottages and a hall that could do with an urgent face-lift.

Judy presented the meeting with samples of road signs this would give the entrance a brighter look. Treasurer PDG Peter Lamb said that all jobs needed to be prioritised, but this wasn’t easy as all funds had dried up. It would be nice if clubs dropped some dollars into our till then the committee could get on with the tasks at hand.

And if you think that was the end for the long hard su ering committee you are wrong. The website also needs to upgraded and the children’s playground needs to be relocated away from overhanging trees.

Myalup Pines faces some hurdles: Can your club help?

In conjunction with Children’s Operations, a fund raising organisation, the Lions Cancer Institute has been approaching the WA Business Community for sponsorship. As part of the fund raising, A Children’s Big Day Out; A Movie Day, was organised.

Our major sponsor, Woolworths, had their local manager on hand to help us set up in the morning. We are also very grateful to Joanne Blackwell [the Easter Bunny] and her husband Chris for the time and e ort they put in to distributing the Easter Eggs to all the children. Thanks also go to the Board Members and Institute friends for the time they put in to make the day a success.

Over 2,000 free tickets were given out for disadvantaged children to attend the Reading Cinemas complex in Belmont to see a choice of “Lego The Movie” a pre-release move shown for the rst time in WA, or “Mr Peabody & Sherman” a newly released movie in WA.

The main group of people invited were disadvantage children, with their parents or carers.

Easter Bunny was on hand to distribute Easter Eggs and everyone was given free refreshments when they went into the movies.

The balance of the funds are being used to help keep the two Cancer Screening units on the road, with recent screenings being conducted during Melanoma Week in Perth, Narrogin Relay For Life and the Melanoma Walk in Bunbury.

Our next scheduled screening is at The Classic Car Show in Whiteman Park on April 27, 2014. Then o to Geraldton on May 25, followed by Moora on May 27.
