Despite a push back from the West Kootenay, the commission con-� gured a new elector-al district called South Okanagan-West Koote-nay which includes com-munities within the Koo-tenay Boundary Regional District and Castlegar in its eastern region.

neighbouring communi-ties to join the Kootenay Columbia riding.

There are lone wolves in every walk of life, in every hobby and pursuit, but in motorcycling – there is a lot of group atmosphere as well, especially when it’s for a good cause.

That’s what the West Kootenay Toy Run is all about: people with similar interests getting together around the activity that binds them, and turning the whole thing into a positive experience.

The event has become an annual event since getting going in 1988, and for the most part, according to spokesperson Vince (involved for seven years) the level of participa-tion has been on an upward trend, weather not-withstanding, over the years. Five hundred to 700 are expected for this year’s run.

A motorcycle raffle has tradi-tionally been a glamourous high point to the run and, this year, like last, the appeal has been doubled-up with a pair of gleaming Harley Davidson’s on the raffle block.

“The grand prize this year is a 2013 Super Glide Custom 110th Anniversary Edition,” said Vince on Labour Day, “and the second

prize is a (new, retro-model) ‘48 Sportster.”

What a great raffle and a large overall turnout really mean is that an assortment of very good causes in the area are supported.

The September 8 event starts with registration (the delivery of an unwrapped toy or a $10 dona-tion) at the Castlegar Community Complex along with a pancake breakfast courtesy of the Castlegar Lions Club.

Once on the road the next stop is on Baker Street in Nelson at about 10:45 — where registration will have been underway since 9:30. Then it’s off to Salmo for lunch at the firehall.

The Salmo-Trail leg will con-clude on Cedar Avenue at 1:45, followed by a Rossland appear-ance at 2:30, ahead of the 3 p.m. windup back at the Castlegar Complex, with refreshments and dinner courtesy of the Castlegar Special Olympic folks… live mu-sic by ‘No More Madness,’ com-munity displays, vendors and awe-some door prizes.

The merriment will conclude with the two bike draws starting at 6 p.m. – good luck to all ticket holders!

A city development that has been in the works for more than two years will have an-other day in the public realm.

A public review will take place on Sept. 23 (7 p.m., council chambers) for a pro-posed residential develop-ment at 1541 Cooke Avenue in southeast Rossland, a fur-ther litmus test for the devel-opment by Rossland resident Cezary Ksiazek which has been lodged in the wheels of bureaucratic process.

The proposed development consists of 24 dwelling units in five buildings. However, road access to the develop-ment is now a sticking point for council in approving the application.

Ksiazek has proposed ac-cess points to the property on both Cooke and Thompson avenues, for a total of five ac-cess points.

City senior planner Mike Maturo said the proposed de-sign creates certain impacts to existing traffic operations

on both Cooke Avenue and Thompson Avenue. His view was supported by an indepen-dent consultant’s report.

To give the decision some balance for council, the city retained ISL Engineering and Land Services (ISL) to review and weigh the two develop-ment concepts — one from the developer and one from the city — and compare the concepts with traffic opera-tions and safety consider-ations.

Both concepts required an on-site visitor parking area to avoid parking on the city’s roadway right-of-way.

ISL had some concerns with Ksiazek’s proposal.

“It generates more vehi-cle-to-vehicle conflicts and increases collision risk with pedestrians and cyclists,” the report read. “The chance of on-street parking by visitor vehicles is also higher.”

The city recommended another building and ac-cess arrangement than what the developer proposed: six buildings with four units each.

It advised against any drive-ways onto Thompson Avenue and two driveways are pro-posed to come onto Cooke Avenue, connected to a park-ing area for both resident and visitor parking spaces.

In the proposed scheme with five access points, Ma-turo was concerned on-street parking for visitor vehicles would take place on both Cooke and Thompson av-enues.

“If sufficient space is not provided on driveway, parked vehicles may overflow onto roadways, creating opera-tional and safety issues,” the report read.

“Some visitors may park right next to or opposite to the development’s driveways.”

Parking restriction signage could reduce some illegal parking, the consultant noted, but the cost of enforcement would increase.

The city staff concept pro-vided a more efficient and saf-er operation, the report con-cluded, and on-street parking would be minimized with clear signage.

Rob Nutter, a 55 year-old millwright, is the beneficiary of a rare double transplant performed earlier this month at St. Pauls’ Hospital in Vancou-ver.

Equipped with new heart and kidney, Nutter’s recovery is well underway.

Double transplants are not at all com-monplace, especially when both organs come from the same donor, as they did in this case.

“This is truly a team effort,” Dr. Jamil Bashir, cardiac trans-plant surgeon at SPH is quoted in an Aug. 29 press release from Providence Health Care / BC Transplant.

“The procedures involve a lot of de-cision making and a massive team of peo-ple working together to ensure that it will be successful.”

Spanning 14 hours and involving two surgeon specialists and a team of profes-sionals, this was only the fifth time this type of double transplant has taken place in British Columbia.

Mr. Nutter had been diagnosed in 1998 with a condi-tion called ‘presumed post-viral dilated cardiomyopathy.’ The wheels were set in motion for a trans-plant in 2006, but his condition was not deemed crucial enough for the major operation. In January 2011, Nutter’s condi-tion took a turn for the worse and he was re-assessed for trans-plant.

Heart and kidney transplants, done in-dividually, are very complicated and the challenges obvious-ly grow when they’re done in tandem as they were with Mr. Nutter.

“Doctors consid-

ered performing the surgeries separately,” the Ug. 28 press re-lease indicates, “but worldwide statistics show improved out-comes if the patient receives both organs from the same donor. The stability of the pa-tient is also a key con-cern. Cardiac experts together with the re-nal transplant team determine whether to wait for one donor for both organs.”

In due course con-ditions were right for the green light to be given to the double transplant and the patient’s recovery has been dramatic and in-spirational.

“Totally surprised,” is how Mr. Nutter puts it. “I did not expect this. I never thought I could be this good this soon.”

True enough, Nut-ter’s outlook on life has improved in di-rect correlation to his

physical revitaliza-tion.

“I think not only does it give myself a lot of hope, it gives other people a lot of hope,” he suggests. “Look at this guy, ten days later what he’s been through… bum heart and bum kid-neys and he’s like a teenager.”

A new lease on life would be an under-statement.

“I was up and walk-ing within two days,” enthused Nutter, “walking quite well and feeling fine… just feeling unbeliev-able. And my family was telling me you’ve never looked this good, you’ve never sounded this good. I talked to someone on the phone yesterday from back home and they said you’ve never sounded this good in years.”

“This incredible story is possible be-

cause one family, during a time of un-imaginable tragedy, made the decision for their loved one to be an organ donor. I’m certain the family would take comfort in seeing that their gift of life has made such a remarkable differ-ence,” said Dr. Greg Grant, Provincial Ex-ecutive Director, BC Transplant.

The immediate path to recovery for

Nutter involves con-stant assessment and analysis by clinic staff and doctors at SPH. As part of his recov-ery, Nutter is taking three-hour walks along Vancouver’s seawall. Kootenay/Boundaryplace names

The Grand Forks neigh-bourhood of Carson was surveyed as a townsite and named for Isabella Carson McLaren (?-1887) in tribute by her son James, who had a nursery there.

The earliest reference is in the Nelson Miner of Decem-ber 7, 1895: “Townsites are blossoming on all sides. Car-son City has been surveyed at McLaren’s on Kettle river, right on the line between the reservation and British Co-lumbia.”

The surviving streets are Vernon and Government, plus Riverside, Victoria, Van-couver, and Westminster ave-nues.

The post office opened on April 1, 1892 as Kettle River, but was renamed Carson on March 1, 1896 following a pe-tition dated October 23, 1895. Residents felt Kettle River was

too general, since there were many settlements along it. The office closed July 31, 1915.

The name survives in Car-son Road as well as the Carson border crossing.

Isabella McLaren is buried in Grey County, Ont.

CARSTENSCarstens was the townsite

near Whatshan Lake where six Mennonite families settled in 1911. It was named for Hugo Emil Carstens (1866-1941), president of the Columbia Valley Land Co., which sold them the property.

...to Canada and served as German consul for the Prai-ries. However, the Whatshan settlement was not success-ful, due in part to its isolation and lack of water to support large-scale agriculture. By 1917 Carstens, the town, was no more.

CASCADEThe Boundary town of Cas-

cade, also known as Cascade

City, was named by 1890, pre-sumably after the cascading waterfalls nearby. On Feb-ruary 9 of that year, the Spo-kane Falls Review advertised Cascade as “The Denver of the North.”

In anticipation of con-struction of the Columbia and Western Railway, John A. Coryell surveyed the townsite and deposited the plan on Jan-uary 10, 1895.

Cascade’s chief promoter, who is sometimes credited

with choosing the name, was George Kendall Stocker, a Spokane realtor and agent for townsite owner Aaron Chan-dler.

Cascade enjoyed boom times when the railway did come through, then began a slow decline.

A post office application was filed on December 14, 1896, but the office didn’t open until October 11, 1897. It amalgamated with Christi-na Lake on June 30, 1973.

The late Ron Walker, a longtime customs officer, wrote in his book I Declare: “In the early 1960s Cascade City dropped the word ‘City’ from its name, since no city had existed there for over 30 years.

There are a number of oth-er places named Cascade, and every once in a while, a letter posted to Cascade, Argentina, shows up at the [customs] of-fice.”

Today portions of the Cas-cade townsite survive: Main street, plus First, Second, and Third avenues.

The name survives as a bor-der crossing and par 3 course.

NDP’s Hancheroff was top spender in May provincial vote

New Democrat Sam Hancheroff spent near-ly $70,000 in his unsuc-cessful bid for Boundary Similkameen in May’s pro-vincial election, according to financial disclosures re-leased by Elections BC.

That was the highest total of any candidate in the three local ridings. Hancheroff also had the most expensive campaign

per vote — $9.83 for each of the 7,113 ballots he re-ceived.

Liberal Linda Larson, who defeated Hancheroff, spent about $61,000.

In Kootenay West, re-elected New Democrat Katrine Conroy had about $55,000 in expenses while defeated challenger Jim Postnikoff of the Liberals posted a $30,000 tab. Con-roy had the biggest war chest of any candidate — $67,000 including in-kind

donations — but didn’t use it all.

In Nelson-Creston, New Democrat Michelle Mun-gall, who secured a second term, spent $48,000 com-pared to Liberal Greg Gar-bula’s $44,000 and Sjeng Derkx of the Green Party at $18,000.

Garbula, however, raised by far the most of any candidate through donations. His $25,000 in contributions included 23 of $250 or more, led

by $1,500 from electron-ics manufacturer Pacific Insight. He also received $1,000 from Jetstream Capital Corp. and several individuals.

Larson raised the next most, $15,000, including a $2,000 donation from Peters Bros. Construction Ltd. Hancheroff raised $9,400, thanks to contri-butions from the United Steelworkers ($4,900), BC Government Employees Union ($1,700) and neigh-

bouring Kootenay West NDP riding association ($2,500).

(The difference between dollars raised by candi-dates and their total cam-paign budgets is accounted for by transfers from their parties.)

Two candidates in Boundary Similkameen actually had more votes than dollars spent: the Green Party’s John Kwas-nica was the choice of 1,602 voters with a $1,300

campaign, 83 cents per vote. But the most frugal campaign belonged to in-dependent Doug Pederson in the same riding, who spent nothing. He still re-ceived 375 votes.

More than $43,000 in federal money was handed out for three projects in Christina Lake last week.

John Duncan, Minister of State and Chief Govern-ment Whip, was at Christina Lake to announce Commu-nity Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF) money for exercise equipment at the local bowl-ing green ($10,525), adding a new wheel-chair lift for the Grand Forks Curl-ing Rink ($24,800) and for moderniz-ing the Grand Forks

Aquatic Centre with new electrical panels and circuit breakers ($7,610).

The funding was earmarked for ex-isting recreation facilities that need upgrading, Duncan said, making them “shovel-ready” proj-ects.

“For our small-er communities, a relatively small in-vestment can make a huge difference to people’s quality of life and that’s what it’s all about,” he said.

Families and com-munities across the region will benefit from the investment, which will boost eco-nomic activity and

leave a lasting legacy of modernized com-munity facilities, he added.

John Mackey, di-rector of recreation and facilities for the Regional District of the Kootenay Bound-ary (RDKB) said the projects would en-hance and promote active and inclusive living in the commu-nity.

Joining Duncan and Mackey for the conference was elec-toral area C director Grace McGregor, who praised the ef-forts of the federal government in sup-porting local recre-ation.

“There’s no way we

can do this without help,” she said.

McGregor said the money has already been received and spent on the new out-door exercise equip-ment at the bowling

green area.“We built our ex-

ercise park with that and we will hopeful-ly add on to it each year,” she said.

“People are already using it and sending

us emails thanking us for doing it.”

Both McGregor and Duncan took to the equipment for a small demonstration.

For Duncan, the stop was part of a

tour through the Southern Interior.

The member of the federal government praised the area and suggested it might be a possible future va-cation destination.

There is about to be an epic battle. We’re talking Starks vs. Lannisters caliber. We’re talking Mon-tagues and Capulets. We’re talking Harry Potter and Voldemort but instead of wands there are shoulder and hip checks. Instead of wearing robes, they’re wearing roller skates. And instead of being an orphan wizard and the lord of darkness they are derby wom-

en. So there’s a few subtle differences, but basically it’s the same.

The finals are here. Mountain Mayhem is Sunday, Sept. 8 at the Rossland Arena.

This season has had big victories and loss-es. It has even had nat-ural disasters. Speak-ing of which major props to the Valley Vendettas who sad-ly had to forfeit their final match against the Killjoys due to the Lemon Creek jet fuel spill. The Ven-

dettas had their own bout on July 27 and it was them versus evacuation and they

triumphed. The team came together to help those of them who were evacuated, of-

fering up their homes and support to one another.

Unable to field a team for their make up bout the Valley Vendettas have bide adieu to 2013. Fin-ishing off the season in 5th with one win against the Babes of Brutality, we’ll all re-member that bout girls, thank you!

So, Sunday, Sept. 8 who will be playing?

The bout for third is between the Ross-land Trail Roller Girls

and the Dam City Rollers. The Dams were beaten by RTRG on their home turf so the Dams need to get their vengeance. Fuelled by their loss, the Dams have been steadily build-ing throughout the season and were the undefeated Killjoys’ toughest competition all season. The Ross-land-Trail squad is new this year, made up of some vets with major derby resumés and some really promising rookies. This could go either way but at the end of it one of these teams will be chanting, “We’re number three! We’re number three!”

Now for the boot… the Golden Boot. I have never actual-ly seen it but I have heard stories of its glory. I’ve heard tell that those who look upon it are never the same and it sings songs, of the glories of past bouts, when you hold it to your ear.

Of course those are just rumours, but what I know for sure is that whoever wins it is the winner of sea-son four and both the Babes of Brutality and the Nelson Killjoys want it, they want it

bad. One could dwell on the fact that when they last met the Nel-son Killjoys destroyed the Babes 282-93. But that almost 200 point difference happened before the Babes beat RTRG on July 27 and won 198-167. This thrust them into sec-ond place and may have given them the momentum they need to take the season.

The Babes are also the foundational team for derby in the West Kootenays and that experience shouldn’t be underestimated. It was members of the Babes who trained up many of the Kill-joys. Dr. Frankenstein made a monster that destroyed him.

The Babes helped create the undefeated derby monster that is the Killjoys, and now we’ll see if this mon-ster bests them on September 8.

Doors open at 2 p.m. at the Rossland Arena. At 3 p.m. Rossland Trail Roll-er Girls will face off against the Dam City Rollers, followed by the Killjoys and Babes of Brutality at 5 p.m.

A major influx of visi-tors is about to make a timely appearance in Cas-tlegar on Friday the 13th.

The date signifies the Castlegar and District Hospital Auxiliary Soci-ety’s turn to host its col-leagues from across the West Kootenay Boundary region

One hundred and fif-ty delagates are expect-

ed to take in the one day event which will be held at the Castlegar Com-munity Complex. Along

with a presentation by a volunteer from Golden, the proceedings will in-clude a message from Pat

Walker of Christina Lake, Vice President of the Brit-ish Columbia Association of Hospital Auxiliaries (BCAHA).

An election will also be held in order to identify a successor for outgoing West Kootenay/Boundary rep Enora Cooper.

Appearances are to be made by a representative of the City of Castlegar. Mayor Lawrence Chern-off will likely be away on business with the Union of

BC Municipalities which is also holding an annual event at the same time.

Regional District of Central Kootenay Area I Director Andy Davidoff and Area J Director Gor-don Zaitsoff are also ex-pected to be part of the proceedings.

Consultant Erika Deins is scheduled to be a significant part of the conference, facilitating afternoon round table dis-cussions.

The interment of a time capsule on the lawn of the Rossland library Friday will be at least the 40th such gift from West Koo-tenay/Boundary’s present to its future.

Time capsules come in two basic varieties: those permanently entombed in building cornerstones and those intended to be re-opened at a later date.

The first of the former was placed in Nelson’s St. Saviour’s church on Au-gust 12, 1898. Its contents included newspapers, coins, and lists of donors and dignitaries. A little over a month later, for-mer Northwest Territo-ries lieutenant governor Charles McIntosh laid the cornerstone for Rossland’s new Bank of Montreal. Inside is a copper casket containing newspapers, coins, stamps, views of the

city, and pictures of bank staff.

Back then, the phrase time capsule didn’t exist and no thought was given to reopening them unless their buildings were de-molished.

The first capsule in our area specifically meant to be unearthed by future generations was placed by the Boundary Historical Society in a cairn at Rock Creek in 1958 to mark B.C.’s centennial.

The contents are crammed into a a three-foot manganese tube made from the drive shaft of a crashed helicopter and lie within a cement-lined, hand-drilled hole in a heart-shaped rock known as the Dinosaur’s Heart. It’s due to be opened in 2058.

A few other capsules have already seen the light of day including one in the cornerstone of Nelson’s Central school, reopened

for the building’s 2009 centennial. Silverfish had eaten the contents, includ-ing a 1908 fruit fair pro-gram, but it was still pretty cool. The items were dis-played for a few months and then returned to the cornerstone along with a new capsule.

Some shorter-term capsules have also been opened, including one cre-ated in 1987 for the City of Grand Forks’ 90th...

‘Amnesia’ (stoneware)

Sergio Ra� o’s sculptures are always provocative and put frankly, o� en dis-turbing too. � at they are powerful, profound and introspective is undeni-able. � ere is sometimes grotesque-ness, but it comes with a certain vex-ing, terrible beauty as well. His talent shines through in every work he cre-ates, and ‘Amnesia’ attests to that.

A year ago, Ra� o’s Man Waiting stood across from the Element nightclub. It was a man upside down balancing a globe on his feet, screw fasteners a� x-ing breaks in his body. It was emotively

forceful, daring and challenging, particularly the fasteners and the gri-mace on his face. His current sculp-ture is similarly disquieting.

‘Amnesia’ is the � gure of a woman in a burnt sienna dress and towering matching headpiece, both covered in raised handprints. Her eyes are closed and downcast. Disconcertingly arm-less, with nuts and bolts fastening above her breasts skewering the torso, her skin is mottled and bluish-grey, with a circle on the back of her neck.Another series of nuts and bolts runs through her dress, others anchor leather straps that bind her feet. � e body is elongated and accentuated by the breaks. � e overall e� ect is great and deep sorrow. It is a disturbing, haunting sculpture that speaks of loss: memory, freedom, function and libido.

“As I indicate on the nameplate, the work is about the interpretation of roles,” says Ra� o. “Pretending or dis-suading oneself to be the opposite of what they actually are - fetishized as an object.”

� e insertion of jarring, disrupting metal � xtures contrasting with the smooth ceramic is an ongoing theme in Ra� o’s works. In Pescado (Fish) a featureless, sexless � gure riddled with lines of spaced holes holds his disem-bodied hands to his neck. Again arm-less, the � gure is caged in wire at the face and the feet.

electrical transformers to a trauma-tized, belly-distended female � gure, one stained eye leaking profusely. Whether she is swollen from hunger or impregnation is le� to the viewer. Like so many of Ra� o’s works it can repel, intrigue and fascinate simultaneously.

� e Cuban-born and educated Ra� o now lives in Kaslo, a far cry from Montreal - where he was artist in resi-dence by invitation in 2004-2005 at the Masters Sculpture Department of Concordia University – and Havana, where he taught ceramics at the Insti-tuto Superior de Arte (ISA), University of Havana. He also founded the Ex-perimental Ceramic Studio at the ISA and is a director of ‘Barro Espiritual’, a group of professors and students dedi-cated to developing the application of contemporary ceramics within the urban landscape.

His work is permanently displayed in the National Museum of Cuba in addi-tion to private collections and galleries around the globe. He has won numer-ous awards for his sculptures, both na-tionally and internationally. ‘Amnesia’ is quintessential Ra� o – confronta-tional, mystifying, and moving too.

‘To See And To Say’ (aluminum)For a third year running, Coquitlam sculptor Serge Mozhnevsky entices Sculpturewalk viewers with another of his enigmatic, beguiling aluminum works. Like his previous o� erings (Ob-servation – 2011, Silence – 2012) , ‘To See And To Say’ challenges viewers in their interpretation. Exactly as Mozh-nesky wants it to be.

“� e impact and meaning of the piece might be completely di� erent for dif-ferent viewers,” he says. “Many will see and interpret this work in ways radically di� erently than what I feel the sculpture is imparting. � at is the

beauty of public installations, every-one who looks at it can come away with a di� erent perspective.”

‘To See And To Say’ is a powerful and profound piece of art, almost cubist in its form and juxtaposition. What seems to be a head pro� le in curving, slashing lines is heightened by open space. � e upper opening is penetrat-ed by a rod with attached sphere at the back while the space below features staggered half globes in two distinct sizes, the larger halves squeezing the smaller two � ush. Is the lower space a mouth? Are the globes a microphone or are they words? Is the triangle hint-ing at a nose above fronting the brain receiving input? � e viewer is le� to interpret and absorb the intent.

Some sculpture is self explanatory; the spectator appreciates the artistic tal-ent and the use of material to create an easily recognizable, beautiful piece of art. � e deliberate abstractness of Mozhnevsky’s aluminum works make them less de� ned, though as compel-ling, beautiful and intriguing. � ey continue to receive critical acclaim, and appear in increasing numbers of permanent installations across North America and in Europe.

Aluminum has become his favourite medium, though he began his sculpt-ing career working mainly in wood. “I have moved more towards aluminum for outdoor installations, as they con-trast so well with the nature they reside in. Like almost every sculptor though,

a variety of mediums keeps me from becoming bored or complacent.

“I believe that simple lines evoked by natural forms provide the great-est freedom for our emotions and imagination, regardless of the material worked in.”

Mozhnevesky studied in his native Ukraine and in Russia before emigrat-ing to Canada in 2000. Working with a number of Vancouver artists, par-ticularly in steel, his sleek sculptures have been displayed singly or as group exhibitions across the continent. Like a number of other works in this year’s Sculpturewalk, ‘To See And To Say’ arrives from the Sioux Falls, South Dakota program where it won 2nd Place: Best of Show - Other Materials, last year.

“In 2012, I had two works exhibited there,” he says, “and this one was re-warded by the jury.”

Enlightening, perplexing perhaps, and inviting introspection, Mozhnevsky’s latest installation here is certain to captivate the audience and jurists as it did last year in Sioux Falls.

Linked to the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, it is this Zodiac that honors and measures the rhythmic and annual distribution of sunlight on the planet. Every day this distribution changes incrementally, but enough to recognize especially now as we head towards equinox. ...birthday that was unveiled during a city council meeting last year. The next due to be opened was buried on the grounds of Perley school in Grand Forks in 1992, but when dug up in 2017, the computer discs and videos therein probably won’t be read-able.

The newest capsule was buried in the Glade cemetery last year to commemorate that community’s centennial. It’s supposed to be opened in 2051.

The more recent capsules have much more diverse contents than the early cornerstone efforts, and are more representative of their communities as a whole.

Overall, including those men-tioned above and those already opened, there were and are at least 14 time capsules in Nelson, eight in Trail, three each in Ross-land, Grand Forks, and Castlegar (although one got stolen), and one each in Edgewood, Burton, Kaslo, Slocan, Gray Creek, Rock Creek, Ainsworth, New Denver, and on Nelson’s North Shore.

Anyone who has ventured into the wilderness and lived through some of the lessons that the Canadian back coun-try has to offer knows the val-ue of that experience.

They also know that, to be done properly, it’s important to be adequately equipped for the trip or the experience can end up being uncomfortable and potentially miserable at it’s worst.

The Take a Hike alterna-tive education program, set to

begin in School District 20 in mid-September, is seeking do-nations to equip the students entering into the innovative outdoor program and they’re looking to the West Kootenay region to contribute some of the outdoor gear for the multi-day learning expeditions.

“In Vancouver we have lo-cal companies that collect donations from staff and cus-tomers for the program,” said Jaydeen Williams, executive director for the Take a Hike program.

“We’re hoping we’ll get a similar response in the Koote-

nays.” The program seeks do-nations for the students from individuals and businesses of equipment including gently used canoes and canoe pad-dles, headlamps, and a range of outdoor under and outer-wear among other supplies.

Those willing to donate items to this program can drop them off at the Koote-nay Columbia Learning Cen-tre (the former Trail Middle School) or more information can be found online at:
