Selkirk College is launching a new pro-gram this January that will train students from all over the world to keep the peace.

� e Unarmed Civilian Peacekeeping Pro-gram will launch on January 16, 2016, and is a four-month online course ending with a bootcamp at the Selkirk campus from April 18 to 29.

Randy Janzen, instructor of peace stud-ies at Selkirk and chair of the Mir Centre for Peace, will be one of the program’s instruc-tors.

“� e program is to train people who have an interest working anywhere in the world ... to become skilled to reduce violence in vola-tile situations,” explains Janzen. “We usually think of peacekeepers as a military opera-tion, and many of those have been very suc-cessful, but this is a civilian or non-military intervention, and ... some researchers show that in fact this is just as e� ective, and it’s way cheaper, and it’s actually safer than military peacekeeping.”

� e Selkirk program is the � rst of its kind to be o� ered in a postsecondary institution. It’s being o� ered in collaboration with an NGO called Nonviolent Peaceforce, which is an unarmed, paid civilian peacekeeping force.

Peacekeeping takes place not only in war zones, but also in inner cities where there is violence related to organized crime.

Students who graduate from the program could � nd themselves working in either situ-ation, either for an organization like Nonvio-lent Peaceforce or for an organization that will take them on as a volunteer and pay a stipend.

“We want to attract people who already have education, like they might have a Bach-elor of Arts, and they really want to do some-thing speci� c,” said Janzen. “So this is a very speci� c training course. At the end of it you actually have a kind of credential that kind of equips you to do a very speci� c job.”

Janzen hopes that by introducing this pro-gram, Selkirk can also help change the face of peacekeeping.

“Our idea is ten years down the line that the Canadian government will be hiring

these positions, and other types of govern-ment organizations will be hiring these po-sitions,” he said. “� at people will be hired to work right here in British Columbia in volatile situations around environmental is-sues, around First Nations land rights, where the last thing we want to see is where there’s a violent confrontation between one group and, let’s say, law enforcement agencies that gets out of hand.”

� e program is open to students from

all over the world, and they only need to be in Castlegar for two weeks during the bootcamp, where instructors, including em-ployees from Nonviolent Peacekeeping, will teach them some con� ict resolution and communication skills.

To support international students who would otherwise not be able to a� ord the program, Selkirk hosted a fundraising event on Saturday night at the Brilliant Cultural Centre, raising close to $10,000.

During her open-ing monologue of the debut episode of The

LineUp, which was filmed and broadcast live from Shambhala Hall in Nelson Friday evening, host Jenna Raider traipsed across the stage resplendent in a red dress and waxed eloquent about her wife, local chef Amanda Skidmore, who was sitting proud in the audi-ence.

The sold-out show, the

result of a recent Indiegogo campaign, also involved Sel-kirk College’s student band Yellow Jack and local co-median Marco Sordini. With a mix of filmed clips, live monologues and interviews, the two-hour extravaganza had elements of both day-time and late-night televi-sion.

The Shambhala Music Festival’s Jimmy Bundschuh made an appearance with his wife Jenna Arpita and newly born son Oliver, who slept through the appear-ance.

That was followed by both

an interview and live per-formance from Lucas My-ers, who performed as his character Michael Hodgkins from his upcoming Capitol Theatre show Campground: A Murder Mystery in the Woods (with music).

Nelsonite Erin Thomson and her dance troupe the Showcats rounded out the evening, performing two burlesque numbers with their colourful umbrellas twirling.

In the coming weeks The LineUp will be posting seg-ments from the episode on social media and elsewhere online.

Most people would say bagpipes have a distinct sound, laughs War� eld’s Gordon Titsworth.

� e pipe major said this sound recently echoed through Oro� no, Idaho, when the Trail Pipe Band o� ered more than entertainment during its annual performance at Lumberjack Days.

� e local group donated 11 band T-shirts to the mix of items auctioned o� in support of families who were displaced from � res this summer. To Titsworth’s sur-prise, the band’s contribution brought in $7,000.

“Our guys were shocked,” he said. “We thought, here’s about 10 shirts, maybe it will bring in $200 they can put into Christmas hampers or something.”

� e money raised speaks to the cause but also a real connection the band has with the community. � e relation-ship stretches back to 1948, according to digitized 8 mil-limetre � lm that documents Trail’s involvement in the cel-ebration.

For 65 years, Oro� no Cel-ebrations Inc. has organized the community event that fea-tures a professional logging show that was � rst created to enhance the county fair and promote the logging industry.

� e community about the size of Rossland welcomes the pipers and drummers each year, o� ering up a place to stay, a free meal, plenty of time to perform and open arms from locals, who have acquired a real appetite for the highland tradition. � e band has grown fond of the people over the years, too, building relationships with some key members of the community and never missing the opportunity to play at an 80th birthday party or even a funeral.

“I know from the � lm, I recognize some of the people who were in the band when I joined in the 60s but how (the relationship) got started, I have no idea,” Titsworth added.

� e Trail Pipe Band continues to promote the Scottish tradition by playing in such parades and concerts throughout the Kootenay region and in-land northwest of the United States.

� e pipe major calls the music and tries to pick tunes that all 15 members like.

“A lot of its traditional but in one of our sets we have the Lord of the Dance, and another set we have Jesus Christ Super Star, so there is a variety,” said Titsworth.

Between school, raising a family, work and other life endeavours, Titsworth has found time for the bagpipes over the years.

“I love the music and I tru-ly have great friends in and out of the band,” he said.

Titsworth was one of about 300 students of former pipe major Bill Burns. � e late Burns was committed to the local band from 1946 until the late 70s or early 80s.

“He had a unique way of encouraging people,” he added. “He used to charge .25 cents a week for lessons and if you continued to the point where you got your bagpipes, then he took all the money and donated it toward the price of the bagpipes.”

Titsworth now continues the tradition with free chant-er practice Wednesdays from 7-9 p.m. at the Masonic Hall. � e band practices Mondays at the Trail armoury from 7-9 p.m. Members are thrilled that world-renowned drum-mer Reid Maxwell will be hosting a local drum school Oct. 24.

� e Trail Pipe Band was formed circa 1924, accord-ing to city archives. � e � rst known photo of the band is dated 1926 with the name “Trail Caledonia Society Pipe Band” on the drum. � rough-

out its history, the band has been sponsored by community groups or organizations and the name has been changed to re� ect this support.

� e pipers and drummers in the community had paraded uno� cially in 1910 on Labour Day and in the opening of the old bridge in May of 1912.

Fresh from working through red tape to get the walking bridge built, the City of Trail is about to receive some serious green from the province - $800,000, in fact.

All along the city has maintained build-ing a footbridge across the Columbia River is a green project – because no cars means no addi-tional carbon emissions from vehicles.

� e province agreed, and through BikeBC, the city is receiving the largest piece of the pro-gram’s $6 million fund-ing to expand and build cycling lanes, trail and paths for cyclists and pedestrians.

� e $800,000 grant is described as the Trail pipe/pedestrian bridge, a 3.8 metre wide, 280-metre long multi-use bridge along the Trans Canada Trail (TCT).

� e money was granted for the pedes-trian platform only, not for the new sewer line.

� e province has phenomenal cycling corridors and B.C. has to do a better job creat-ing cycling tours, Todd Stone told the Trail Times in March.

During the interview, the Transport Minister assured the Times that Trail would not be le� behind in the province’s 10-year B.C. on the Move transportation plan.

While the origin of Lardo/Lardeau is shrouded in mystery, there was a battle for the right to use it between two similarly named towns: Lardo (or Lardo City) on Kootenay Lake, and Lardeau (or Lardeau City), on the northeast arm of Upper Arrow Lake.

The latter was first mentioned in Revelstoke’s Kootenay Star on Aug. 13, 1892: “We hope the boys at the ‘Lardeau City’ will return the compli-ment we paid them on the 1st of July.”

Details of the townsite survey are unknown, but the plan was appar-ently deposited with the land registry on Dec. 2, 1892 by William Har-rington Ellis, editor and part owner of the Victoria Colonist. Ellis was also one of the principals of the Lardeau and Kootenay Railway, which wanted to build a line that would connect Lardo and Lardeau, although noth-ing came of it.

James (Pothole) Kellie, MLA for the region, was another key Lardeau City booster.

The same month, Charles W. Busk surveyed the Lardo townsite. The streets were Lardo, Duncan, Kootenay, Dawson, Kaslo, Main, and South, while the avenues were numbered 1st through 6th. (Today

only Main, Duncan, and Kootenay streets survive, along with 3rd, 4th, and 5th avenues.)

The town was first mentioned in the Nelson Tribune of Dec. 1, 1892: “C.W. Busk is surveying the Nagle-Davies townsite at the head of Koo-tenay Lake and expects to have the job completed within two weeks. The town will be called Lardo and lots will be placed on sale as soon as

the survey is completed …” (There might have been another

town called Lardeau City too, judging from this item in the Spokane Review of Nov. 26, 1892: “At the confluence of the [Lardeau and Duncan riv-ers] a town has lately been platted and christened Lardeau City.” A.C. Pearson ran the Valley House hotel at this spot in 1893, which was oth-erwise known as Pearson’s or Garden

Valley. The latter is first mentioned in the Kaslo Slocan Examiner of May 13, 1893 and the former in the Nelson Tribune of April 14, 1894. Meanwhile, the town of Ferguson was initially called Lardeau Forks, according to the 1897 Henderson’s BC directory.)

The towns ran into conflict when the Lardo townsite map was pre-sented at the land registry in Janu-

ary 1893 and the registrar refused to accept it because the name was too similar to Lardeau. The owners appealed to the courts, but the judge dismissed the case: “I think the reg-istrar is right in refusing to register a second map with a name identical in sound with another name already on the register.”

SALELardo’s promoters neverthe-

less found a way to register their townsite. Nor did the conflict deter both towns from applying for post offices, first Lardo and then Lardeau.

BC postal inspector E.H. Fletcher supported the former’s application: “The population of Lardo is much larger and more important than that of Lardeau and the former being the first in the field for a post office, should I think, have the advantage of their enterprise.”

However, Fletcher’s superiors

would only authorize the post office at Lardo providing the name was changed. (They were under the mistaken impression an injunction had been issued preventing use of Lardo.)

Each town felt it had an ex-clusive right to the name and insisted it would be impossible to find an alternative. They be-gan trading insults. An edito-rial in the Lardo Reporter called Lardeau “a mathematical point on the Arrow Lakes, occupying position but no space [which] has not yet fulfilled its mani-fest destiny by becoming a sheep ranch ...”

Lardeau criticized its rival’s

geography: “Lardo claims to be entitled to the name because of its proximity to the mouth of the Lardo River. It is some 35 miles form its mouth.” It also took out ads stating “The only Lardeau! None genuine without the ‘deau’ in the name.”

MP John Mara was asked to intervene but decided to sit on the fence: “I unfortunately prom-ised to support the application for offices at both places, not knowing that the department would object on account of the similarity of names.”

Lardo’s promoters suggested “Lardo, Kootenay Lake” and “Lardeau City, Arrow Lake”

would be distinctive enough, but the post office didn’t seem to agree.

Postmaster-general William White finally ruled: “The ques-tion of name must be settled by the parties themselves.” With neither side willing to com-promise, the matter remained unresolved.

In October 1893, E.H. Fletch-er’s assistant visited Kaslo and inquired about Lardo: “He as-certained that the place is now practically deserted ... There is therefore no necessity for the establishment of a post office at Lardo during the coming winter.”

“We’re in a bit of a co-nundrum,” said mayor Deb Kozak. “The fact is pot dis-pensaries are not legal and contravene our bylaws.”

Jim Leslie, the director of Kootenays Medicine Tree, which also operates in Grand Forks, said he welcomes the discussion.

“It’s really important for all parts of society to under-stand fully the science behind the medical use of cannabis,” he said. “We need to be the shining light to guide people through these times before we get better regulation.”

Local marijuana activist Herb Couch said the dispen-saries are compensating for a woefully inadequate fed-eral system, and operating in a sometimes stressful legal grey area.

Castlegar will be the home for a new feature film that starts filming this October.

SHSS Alumni and class of 2001 Valedic-torian, writer/director Scooter Corkle is shooting his first feature film in his home-town of Castlegar this October.

“Castlegar is not only the setting of the film in written form, but also the location of the film in actual form. I wrote the script based on the area and it’s unique small town

culture because I’m interested in deep-rooted secrets that fight to stay hidden in such a tight community. When they come out, they tend to be quite life changing.

“Hollow in the Land is an exciting op-portunity to come back home to shoot my first feature-length film,” said Corkle.

Corkle has been working in the Van-couver film industry for the past 12 years, moving through the ranks of Lighting

and Camera until making the switch to screenwriting and directing. With two award-winning short films under his belt gaining international attention, Hollow in the Land will be his feature length film debut. And he’s landed a Hollywood star to lead the cast.

Glee alumna Dianna Agron will play Alison in the film, a blue-collar girl who works at the local pulp mill.

Kootenay Gallery opens photography exhibitions

The Kootenay Gallery of Art hosted an opening for two photographic exhibitions Friday evening.

Fireline is an exhibition of photographs taken by front line forestry firefighters. The display features incredible photographs that reflect the level of in-tensity the firefighters face in their efforts to control the often powerful and unpredictable fire events. Photographer Billy Stevens and Karlie Shaughnessy, Communications Officer for the Southeast Fire Centre were on hand for the event as well as other

firefighters who came out to show their support.The second exhibit is Exchanging Views, the

work of Winlaw photographers Jo Brown and Tom Bradley. Creative partners for many years, they have created a body of work independent of each other yet found that when exhibited together another di-mension is added to the stories they tell.

Both exhibitions will run until November 7. The Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10-5 p.m. with admission by donation. The Gallery is located across from the Castlegar Regional Airport adja-cent to the Doukhobor Discovery Center on Heri-tage Way.

As the fall weather returns, so begins the concert season and audience members can look forward to an exciting series of musical offerings as presented by the Kootenay Gallery TD Trust Sunday Concert Series.

With no less than three mu-sicians holding principal string positions in three of Canada’s major orchestras, the caliber of performance is unprecedented here in the Kootenays.

“We are so fortunate to have violin superstars Jonathan Crow, Concert Master of the Toronto Symphony and Andrew Wan, Concert Master of the Montreal Symphony teaming up for a West Kootenay tour April 17,” says artistic director Nicola Everton. Principal cellist of the Vancouver Symphony Ariel Barnes will join harpist Heidi Krutzen with the Couloir Duo February 21.

musical scene, the series will be rounded out by local performers Noemi Kiss, soprano and Nicola Everton, clarinet joined by Gold-en pianist Sue Gould November 29. Nelson’s Cultural Ambas-sador Bessie Wapp will create a solo performance of spoken word and song on March 13.

The season kicks off on Sun-day, Oct. 4, 1:30 p.m. at the Trail United Church with the Fish on Five Brass Quintet, hailing from the Okanagan with members of the Okanagan and Kamloops Symphony Orchestras. The quin-tet presents an eclectic mix of music, including sounds from the renaissance, opera, ragtime, jazz, and pop.

Founded in 2009, five brass-playing friends were anchored in a remote cove west of Bella Bella on the central coast of BC. A day of fishing was over and it was time to relax. In the glow of

the setting sun, the musicians assembled on the deck and the music began with the sonorous sounds of brass. The beautiful harmonies were tossed around the cove by an echo that equalled those heard in the cathedrals of Vienna. That setting and experi-ence was the true birthplace of ‘Fish on Five’.

Later, in a performance for the elders in Bella Bella at the community centre in Klemtu, the quintet was given the Heilt-suk First Nation’s name, ‘Ski Ouk Meeya’ which means ‘Five Fish-es’. Often asked about the quin-tet’s name, the explanation is simple, as the members yell “Fish on” while catching a fish. ‘Fish on Five’ was a natural evolution.
