Comedian

explores the language of comedy

Canadian comedian Brent Butt doesn’t always know ahead of time what he’s going to say on stage. He’s amassed a signi� cant arsenal of comedic content, drawn from 27 years of touring experience, but he doesn’t like to plan ahead.

“What I do onstage is kind of determined by what the crowd is into,” Butt told the Ad-vertiser. “You pack hundreds of individuals into a space together and that’s a brand new animal that’s never existed before. � e fact that every night it’s di� erent is what keeps it fresh and exciting. All these years later and I’m still in the wings not knowing.”

But things have evolved somewhat dif-ferent since he started out with his career.

“In the early days you have to do shows in rooms where you know there’s a legiti-mate threat of physical altercation. Stripper joints, biker bars. You’re thinking ‘I might get knifed here’ and a few times I had to leave through the kitchen.”

Hopefully nothing of the sort will happen when Butt brings his act to the Capitol on May 13 at 7:30 p.m. Butt said fans of his hit show Corner Gas will recognize his come-dic sensibilities, but his stand-up routine is signi� cantly di� erent than his show.

“Making TV is a very collaborative thing, it’s a team sport. � ere are some similar sensibilities in my act — I was the one re-sponsible for the tone of the show — but this will be less joke-jokes and more wordplay, fun with language. I like to � nd something new in the mundane.”

He said he’s fascinated by ordinary con-

versation.“Rural colloquialisms fascinate me, but

prim and proper, erudite language is also interesting to me. I like when those two merge. Any time I can get in that sweet spot, when I’m mixing sophistication with blue collar buddy comedy, that’s what I’m looking for.”

� ese days Butt, who has amassed a number of awards for his work, is primarily pouring his attention into his newly formed Sparrow Media Company.

“We named it Sparrow because it’s a bird that doesn’t feel the need to � y south. � is has been exciting transition for me because up until now I’ve only worked on things I’ve created, but now I’m opening the company to work with other creatives who have brought me ideas.”

He said he loves having a chance to collaborate.

“These are people I know and respect who have projects that have legs, and I’m interested in bringing them to life. Maybe I can open some doors they can’t. It sounds more altruistic than it ac-tually is though—really, working with creatives makes me feel good.”

Area C/Christina Lake director Grace McGregor is one of only 14 people from across the province named to BC’s new Rural Advisory Council.

The appointment was made on March 11 by Steve Thomson, Min-ister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and Donna

Barnett, parliamentary secretary.The mandate of the council is

to provide independent and im-partial input and advice to the BC government on matters related to rural development in the province, strengthen rural economies, and support rural prosperity and thriv-ing rural communities across the

province.McGregor said she was asked if

she wanted to join the committee after being involved with the Rural BC project previously.

“Because I had chaired the steer-ing committee for the Rural BC project, I felt rather bound to do that so I did,” said McGregor. “I’m

really, really happy about the people at the table. The province is really well represented.”

The committee met for the first time last week in Victoria. McGregor said they have a number of different topics they will be exploring in the coming year.

“I think the direction will prob-

ably be different each meeting be-cause it will hinge on what the group wants,” she said.

The initial focus for the council will be to provide advice on rural economic development, including rural access to capital and business development support for rural en-trepreneurs and businesses.

The dragons have made their decisions.

On stage at the Charles Bailey Theatre in Trail on Friday night, contestants from all over the West Kootenay region pitched their business ideas in hopes of taking home that over-sized check.

Organized in three categories, junior, senior and post-secondary, contestants each had their five minutes in front of the dragons, selling different ideas like tire studs, a hula-hoop lifestyle, map-ping and grocery apps and more.

The stage changed with every presentation. Presenters used many visual aids from skis to chickens to a huge iPhone.

When the votes were all tallied, including the 20 per cent audience vote, winners were announced to loud applause and camera flashes.

First up, the juniors. Taking the top spot and a $1,500

check was Michael Ganzert and SparrX, a unique system of sensors for martial arts pads that keeps track of hits and points on a com-puter or tablet. Ganzert demon-strated his product by asking some of the dragons to punch him in

the chest, getting a few laughs and garnering a lot of interest from the audience.

However, he says he feels like his presentation could have gone bet-ter.

“I felt like I could definitely have prepared a lot more for it,” he said after the big show. “There were cer-tain points that I wanted to say, but I forgot to say at the time.”

He described feeling weird when we heard his name called as the winner of his category, and with his big check, Ganzert says he is still trying to figure out which parts of his sensor system need the most investment.

“I am not 100 per cent certain yet (where the money is going to go),” he said. “I am weighing my options.”

Coming second in the junior division, and winning $1,000, was Darrin McBee and Keegan Chris-tiansen from Stanley Humphries Secondary School with their idea for Power Studs. Designed for ATV and dirt bike tires, the studs are more durable and won’t ruin a tire while costing less and lasting longer than current products on the market.

Two students from Nelson’s Wildflower Middle School won $500 for their 3 Little Pigs Livestock Care business – a livestock and gardening service for vacationing farm-ers. Talia Westergreen and Nathanial Lay-bourne would stay at a farm while the owner is on vacation, feeding and watering the ani-mals and plants.

Everyone was a winner in the senior cat-egory. Four out of for presenters took home some money to improve their home busi-nesses.

pitched their idea for an app called Use it or Lose it that catalogues grocery items and their expiry dates.

A firewood delivery service, BCS Fire-wood, based in Grand Forks won Sebastian Sullivan and Brandon Drexler $1,000 to pur-chase a trailer and expand their home deliv-ery business.

Tied in third place and each winning $500, Soothing Sounds by Crowe students Austin Forry and Anthony Wilson and Posi-tive Hoop Life by fellow Crowe student Ra-chel Danczek. Soothing Sounds is the brand name of a speaker pillow that plays white noise along with music to aid in sleep. Posi-tive Hoop Life, by Danczek, is a series of hu-la-hoop workshops with health and fitness

in mind. The only presentation in the post-sec-

ondary category came from Maxwell Nich-olson, a Grand Forks native studying at the University of Victoria. He pitched Ideas Café – a coffee shop that focuses on networking. He described the concept as LinkedIn meets Starbucks.

All of the contestants underwent thorough questioning from the dragons at the judge’s ta-ble: Trail Mayor Mike Martin, Program Man-ager at Juice FM and the GOAT John Helm, Trail Councillor and finance guy Kevin Jolly, Director of Sales for Black Press Boundary publications Karen Bennett, Spencer Smith, VP of commercial services for Pacific Coastal Airlines, and last year’s Junior Dragon’s Den

winner, J.L Crowe student Jordan Strobel.The dragons asked questions about start-

up costs, marketing strategies, technical as-pects of the different business pitches before retreating to the backstage area to deliberate. At the end of the 11 presentations, John Reed from Community Futures in Trail announced the big winners., as well as drew door prize tickets, giving away free flights from Trail to any of Pacific Coastal Airlines’ destinations.

Next year’s Junior Dragon’s Den competi-tion is expanding, hoping to add contestants from the Cranbrook and Revelstoke areas.

� e Steps Company Danc-ers had a successful tour down south over the March break.

� ey proudly represented their country and their home-town, as they danced their way from Disneyland, through Hollywood and all the way to Ensanada, Mexico.

� e company, directed by Rhonda Michallik, has been working very hard since Sep-tember on a 20-minute pro-duction number called “Oh Canada, Eh.” � is piece, a witty montage of many styles of dance from classical ballet to hip hop not only showcased the talent and diversity of the Steps Dance Company, but also was a quirky and entertaining way to teach our neighbours south of the border a little bit about what it is like to be Canadian.

� e dancers, 25 students ranging in age from nine to 18, started the tour with a performance in Disneyland’s California Adventure Park. Following that, and a highlight for many of the dancers, was going to Hollywood to take hip hop classes at the Interna-

tional Dance Academy studios, which is host to the rehearsals for the TV Show So You � ink You Can Dance. A� er that, they boarded the Carnival Imagina-tion, a cruise ship which took them from Long Beach, Los Angeles to Ensenada Mexico. Onboard the ship, they per-formed on the Dynasty � e-atre main stage.

Volunteer mom, Sandi Jew-ell said the whole trip was a great way to o� er the students some exposure outside of their small town. “It’s [our] way of giving the kids a di� erent ex-perience in the dance world.”

Every two years the the dance group embarks on a trip similar to this, instead of going to various competitions and shows, which happens every other year. � is was a really unique and challenging expe-rience for them, as they had to adapt to the movement of the ship while they danced.

Cruise ships are a very fea-sible form of employment for dancers out of high school, Jewell added, so giving them a taste of what that work would

be like was great for the kids.� e dancers had to perform

� e dancers said as long as they were moving they were � ne, but when it came to bal-ancing and holding a pose, the struggle was real.

“As an audience though, you couldn’t tell,” she added.

You can catch their “Oh Canada, Eh” production, as well as some of their other great work, on May 22 at the Capitol � eatre in Nelson. � is show is a fun-draiser for the Steps Dance Company Arts Scholarship fund. � is scholarship, in it’s inaugural year, will go to a Grade 12 student to help them continue to pursue a passion for the arts. � is year it will go to a JL Crowe graduate, howev-er the company hopes to grow this scholarship fund each year in order to expand the pro-gram and be able to support multiple artists from the West Kootenay region each year.

Je� is a prodigious talent with an innovative spirit. Rather than a career in a major orchestra, Je� has chosen a life in the Kootenays where he is free to explore the full range of musi-cal possibilities. � ese include the position of Music Director of � e Symphony of the Koo-tenays.

Alex Nichol spent 25 years as an orches-tral musician with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Halle Or-chestra of Manchester, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra before moving to the Okanagan where he and his wife estab-lished Nichol Vine-yard Winery. With re-tirement in 2006, his focus has returned to music-making.

A deeper exploration of Doukhobor culture provided valuable insight to a class of 25 Selkirk College students who had an opportunity to sample the history, philosophy, food, language and spirit of a com-munity that has helped shape the West Kootenay-Boundary region.

Offered through the Mir Centre for Peace Summer Insti-tute, Peace 216: The Doukho-bors was an intensive five-day course that took place in and around Castlegar last week. The course explored the Douk-hobors and their connection to issues of peace and conflict. Open to everyone, the course took a look at the beginnings in Russia to the current realities. Doukhobor history and culture were examined with attention to themes of peace, pacifism, violence and non-violence, community, and utopia.

“I really think that our com-munities are missing out tre-mendously by not embracing the historical significance and the historical experience of the Doukhobor heritage,” said Sally Williams, a retired Castle-gar teacher who became stu-dent for a week. “I think with the militarization of Canada, we need the influence of the Doukhobor people and the whole peace movement more than ever.”

Williams joined a class that was comprised of a diverse group of students who had a multitude reasons for taking part in the educational experi-ence. Williams was joined by

current Selkirk College students who were taking the class as part of their diploma programs, students with Doukhobor roots wanting to dig deeper into their backgrounds and community members who simply wanted more knowledge.

“We have had an opportuni-ty to engage in talking to people who are intimately connected to the culture that is expressed in speakers and the venues we have visited,” said Williams. “I feel very privileged to take part in this course.”

Students spent the mornings in class with Selkirk College History/Peace Studies Instruc-tor Takaia Larsen. Historical lectures were combined with presentations by guest speak-ers from the Doukhobor com-munity including Vera Mall-off, Elizabeth Malloff, Hannah Hadijin, Peter Evdokimoff, JJ Verigin and Fred Makortoff. In the afternoons they journeyed into the community for field study where they visited the Brilliant Cultural Centre, the Doukhobor Discovery Centre, Verigin’s Memorial Park, the Doukhobor Suspension Bridge, the Brilliant Cemetery, the Me-morial Stone at the confluence and Zuckerberg Island. The class was also welcomed into the homes of Walter and Vera Kanigan, and Robin and Re-becca Thewall.

At the Brilliant Cultural Centre, the class took part in helping members of the Douk-hobor Kootenay Ladies Orga-nization (KLO) make Russian borscht. The students packed

into the bustling kitchen in the basement of the centre where all the senses were brought alive during the activity.

KLO Head Cook Edna Sapriken and her team helped illustrate the importance of food in the Doukhobor culture. Students helped in the kitchen and then joined the members of the KLO for a meal, prayer, conversation and song.

“I think it is important not just for the non-Doukhobor people to come and learn, but it’s important for our own people,” said Sapriken, who has been making borscht at the cul-tural centre for the last 25 years. “A lot of our own people have lost the cultural roots. We want to imitate what we originated with, but it’s very difficult to do because we can’t quite under-stand the full scope of how we originated.”

This is the first year that Sel-kirk College has offered Peace 216: The Doukhobors as a summer institute class. The re-sponse through enrolment and feedback after completion indi-cate the class was a tremendous success.

“I’m more than pleased with how the course went,” says Larsen. “It was an incredible week of learning for the stu-dents, but also an important connection with the commu-nity. Everybody that took part has left with something that they will be able to carry for-ward in their understanding of why this culture is so important to our region and why we need to continue to learn from the Doukhobor people.”

Kids of all ages love cycling. Cy-cling is fun, healthy and practical. It is a great way to spend time as a fam-ily, get exercise and travel around the neighbourhood. However; as with other forms of transportation, there are risks. Cycling is a leading cause of unintentional injury and hospitaliza-tion in Canadian kids under age 14 and those injuries can be very serious.

“While the most common cycling injuries among children are broken bones and scrapes, head injuries are the number one cause of serious in-jury and death,” says Dr. Heather Wil-son, Trauma Services Medical Direc-tor. “Unfortunately, every year in our emergency departments we see chil-dren with bicycle related injuries that are preventable.”

Putting safety first ensures everyone enjoys the ride.

“Following safe cycling practices, such as wearing a helmet, having a properly adjusted bike, and following the rules of the road can save lives,” said Lex Baas, Practice Lead with Pro-motion and Prevention. “Parents, as both teachers and role models, play a key role in keeping kids safe on the road.”

Interior Health offers up these cy-cling safety tips for the whole family.

Wear a helmet: Parents and children should wear a

properly fitted bike helmet. When cor-rectly worn, a bike helmet can reduce the risk of serious head injury by up to 80 per cent. For information on how to properly fit a helmet visit Parachute Canada (http://www.parachutecana-da.org/injury-topics/topic/C8).

CheCk your ride: Ensure bikes are adjusted to the

recommended height for the rider, tires are inflated and brakes are work-ing properly. Bicycle size and height recommendations can be found on CAA’s bicycle safety webpage (http://bikesafety.caa.ca/cyclists/bicycle-equipment/choosing-a-bicycle.php).

Be prepared: Everyone in the family should be

trained in bicycle safety and the rules of the road. This includes the use proper hand signals and understand-ing and obeying all traffic signs.

Ninety-fourth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names

Johnsons Landing presents us with an opportunity to address a vexing subject: the lack of apostrophes in Canadian place names.

In British Columbia Place Names, G.P.V. and Helen Akrigg explain that in 1890 the United States set up its Board of Geographic Names, “charged with regularizing, record-ing, and making official the country’s geo-graphic names. One of the arbitrary rules that the Americans set for themselves was that geographical names must not contain apostrophes. In 1897 the Geographic Board of Canada came into being and proceeded to make official for Canadian names the no-apostrophe rule.”

So while you’ll frequently see it written Johnson’s Landing — that’s the form used by the Johnson’s Landing Retreat Center and in Mandy Bath’s recent book Disaster in Para-dise — officially, it’s Johnsons Landing, as though there was more than one Johnson.

In fact, the Kootenay Lake community was named for just one man, Algot Johnson (1875-1963). In Where the Lardeau River Flows, Jim McNichol recalled: “Algot was a miner. He came from Sweden to Colorado and from Colorado … he came north in the gold rush about 1895 to Kaslo. He was fish-ing in a rowboat and got caught in a storm and stayed down at the mouth of Kootenay

Joe Creek. While he was waiting for the storm he walked up and saw this beautiful flat. He started to save money to buy a piece.”

The earliest mention of Johnsons (or Johnson’s) Landing yet discovered is in The Kootenaian of April 27, 1911: “A gang of men went up Monday night to Johnson’s Landing to start work on the new government wagon road there.”

Algot Johnson is also mentioned as living there on the 1911 census, along with Robert McKinney.

However, The Kootenaian of May 4, 1911 referred to Johnson as “the pioneer Fry Creek rancher,” and the Nelson Daily News of April 30, 1912 and Jan. 9, 1913 also said he lived at Fry Creek — then regarded as a sepa-rate place. The Kootenaian of Oct. 16, 1913 reported Fry Creek would seek a post office, but it never opened.

The creek was named for pioneer pros-pector/trapper Richard (Dick) Fry (1838-98) and is first mentioned in a mining notice in the Ainsworth Hot Springs News of Oct. 31, 1891.

Johnsons Landing is one of few survivors of what used to be a long list of Kootenay Lake landing names. A couple of others in the same area were included on the 1911 census, but have since vanished: McIntyre’s Landing, which became Birchdale in 1926; and Gardner’s Landing, named for Walter James Gardner (1873-1938), who bought 200 acres sometime before 1909. It was an official steamer stop on the CPR timetable by 1913.

Algot Johnson died in Kaslo at 87. He never married.

His death registration reveals he was born in Karlstorp, a tiny town in southern Sweden, to John Frederick Gustafson and Johanna Christina Danielson (Swedish nam-ing conventions saw sons incorporate their

father’s first names in their surnames). The Johnsons Landing post office opened

in 1917 and closed in 1970. Another John-sons Landing existed in the New Westmin-ster area in the 1890s.

A new initiative to connect parents, youth, teachers and doctors is making its’ way across the Kootenay Boundary. Brought to the re-gion by the Kootenay Boundary Local Action Team for the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use Collaborative,

Kindness Creates Wellness is a series of events that bring together people in commu-nities throughout the Boundary to focus on increasing mental health literacy for parents, teachers and youth, fostering stronger con-nections between community and schools, and reducing stigmas.

“We know that the best care happens when the team surrounding the patient is working together,” said Dr. Cindy Loukras, Specialist Physician Lead. “These events are a great way to build the strong relationships necessary to fully support youth dealing with these issues.”

Each Kindness Creates Wellness event will includes a screening of the film “Happy” and a specially selected panel of expert speakers to engage the audience in conversations about community mental health wellness and dis-cuss how happiness increases the more one is physically active, performs kind actions for the benefit of others rather than for oneself, and feels close to family and friends.

Dr. Todd Kettner - School District #8 Psychologist and Collaborative Team Mem-ber said, “We had over 65 people come to the first Kindness Creates Wellness event in Castlegar and it was great to see them engage

with each other around the subject of mental health wellness. It was a living example of the ultimate message the film gives – happiness is about relationship and how we help each other. It’s not about me or you, it’s about us.”

Each Kindness Creates Wellness event will be tailored to address community men-tal health needs. Some will be community based, while others will be presented in the local school. The next event will be held on May 7, National Child & Youth Mental Health Day, at the Salmo Secondary School for students and parents. Events will follow through 2015 in Kalso (June), Nelson and Trail (both in the Fall).

The Walmart store in Trail will soon be expanding its services.

Alex Roberton, director of corporate affairs with Walmart Canada, said the Trail outlet will soon become a Walmart Supercentre.

“In Trail right now, there is a com-bination of dry food (in the grocery section) and some freezer and refrig-erated sections,” said Roberton. “The existing offerings will grow and be ex-panded, offering more dry foods, more frozen and more refrigerated, and we will be adding fruits and vegetables, meat and fish. You can do your full grocery shopping there. Also, we will be closing the tire and lube service at (the Trail location).”

There is no exact date set or specific details about the renovations released, but Roberton says the project will be completed in the very near future.

“I don’t have any details on what is going to happen to the store from a construction standpoint, but I can tell you that it will be done this year,” he said. “There are no other specific changes (to the garden centre or automotive centre) planned right now. It is one of 29 Supercentre projects that we have planned to have complete by the end of the fiscal year, which is Jan. 30, 2016.”

JERSEYThe Jersey townsite, about 11 km south-

east of Salmo, was born in 1947 when Cana-dian Exploration Ltd. examined lead-zinc showings on the claim of the same name.

The claim was staked before 1916 al-though the name’s origin is unknown. It could be after the island in the English Channel or any number of places in the United States.

The Jersey was one of several ore bodies — the Emerald was the key one — that kept Canex humming for more than 25 years, as recounted in Larry Jacobson’s Jewel of the Kootenays.

The Jersey townsite had over 120 homes, a school (Harold Lakes Elementary, named for the mine manager) and an Olympic-size swimming pool. The buildings and equip-ment were auctioned off in 1973 when the mine closed.

While the name is no longer in use, there is a Jersey Creek, and until 2007, the Telus phone book included the notation “Jersey – See Salmo.”

JUBILEE POINTThis spot on the west side of Duncan

Lake’s upper arm was first mentioned in The Ledge of June 23, 1898 as a polling sta-tion — in the provincial election the fol-lowing month, 35 people voted there.

It was the BC head office of the Gold

Hills Exploration and Development Co. of Toronto, which owned 12 groups of claims in the Upper Duncan River country. The company’s president was James D. Edgar, speaker of the House of Commons from 1896-99. Other directors included Prince Edward Island premier Donald Farquhar-son and the Mohawk physician Oronhy-atekha.

The Nelson Tribune of Oct. 10, 1900 said: “At the head office on Jubilee Point the company has comfortable buildings, including a complete assay outfit which is kept busy on specimens from the compa-ny’s many properties.”

Jubilee was the one of the company’s claims. Nothing was heard from them after 1901.
