Kokanee Glacier Pro-vincial Park users are getting a much-need-ed update to the topo-graphic maps which have served them for decades. � is summer, Friends of West Kootenay Parks and Mighty Bighorn Maps are collaborating to cre-ate a map which re� ects the community’s deep attachment to the park,

the park’s history, and its future. Over the next few months park enthusiasts will delve into historical archives, head out to the park to survey trails and climbing routes, and col-lect detailed photographs and measurements of Ko-kanee Glacier.

Created in 1923, Ko-kanee Glacier Provin-cial Park has played an important role for area mountaineers, backcoun-try skiers, and nature lov-ers.

To fully represent the public’s intimate knowl-edge of the Park, Friends of West Kootenay Parks

has chosen a commu-nity-based model to re-search the material for the map’s content. A map committee has been con-vened by the Friends and is actively pursuing re-search for the map’s con-tent.

Members of the public are being encouraged to join the map committee to contribute to content, and share park photo-graphs.

Trevor Campbell, own-er of Kootenay-based

Mighty Bighorn Maps, is leading the survey of park trails and climbing routes. Along with trails and climbing routes, Trevor plans to conduct a glacier survey in September that will provide measurement data of Kokanee Glacier. It is hoped that glacier measurements and pho-tographs can be used in the future to monitor the glacier’s retreat.

� e park survey is an arduous task that requires lots of planning and sup-

port – volunteers are be-ing sought to accompany surveyors and act as base camp support.

� e Friends of West Kootenay Parks Society is a registered non-pro� t society formed in 1988. Among its purposes is to support protection and preservation of West Koo-tenay Provincial Parks. Mighty Bighorn Maps was founded in 2011 and has published backcoun-try ski maps in the West Kootenay.

If you saw a stand up paddle board (SUP) armada mak-ing its way down the Columbia River near Castlegar last Thurs-day, they were there because the waterway they were scheduled to be on was closed.

Andrea Ryman, of Endless Adventure based in the Crescent Valley, said she had no choice but to change the venue for the group after being un-expectedly displaced from the Slocan River after a jet fuel spill on Friday, July 26.

“We’ve had to make some adjustments to our tours,” she said. “Its pretty devastating what’s been going on as far as the river goes and especially for the people living in the community.”

A number of people in Thursday’s group were from Manitoba and Ryman said at the time she and her co-owner husband, Chris, just wanted to offer clients as much as possible.

Tim Putnam from Winnipeg said it was the second year he has come to the Koo-tenays to enjoy the outdoors with Endless Adventure.

“The depth and quality of instruction and ratio of instruc-tors to guests is un-believable,” said Put-nam.

Endless Adventure mostly offers instruc-tion for whitewater kayaking, recreational kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding but also sells kayaks, canoes and paddle boards. They also started offering youth camps and run a free “Flat-water Social” from 5:30 - 7 p.m. Monday nights at the boat launch across from the Lion’s Head Pub in Robson. Kay-aks and SUP boards are available for those eager to learn.

In a followup con-versation Monday, August 5, Ryman said they have been told to “sit tight” for about

two weeks until crews have a better sense of when they may be allowed back on the river.

“I’ve had a few peo-ple say, ‘Oh, we will just postpone and I’ll get on the river at the end of the summer’ and I’ve been telling people we shouldn’t think like that,” she said. “If you want to do something fun, let’s do it now because it’s possible we won’t be on the Slocan again this year.”

The Slocan Riv-er is currently under a “Vessel Operating Restriction” in order to protect workers and the public while efforts are made to contain and clean up about 30,000 litres of jet fuel that spilled from a tanker.

Additionally, a “Do Not Use” order issued

by Interior Health for drinking water and recreational use for Lemon Creek, Slocan River and Kootenay River above and be-low Brilliant Dam, is still in effect.

Ryman said there are a lot of tourists coming into the area who have heard about the spill and are won-dering what to do.

Now in their sev-enth summer, End-less Adventure has 12 staff in Canada and has also operated an all-inclusive kayak/surf vacation in Ec-uador from Novem-ber through Febru-ary for the past five years. They employ anywhere from three to five guides, includ-ing at least two locals while in Ecuador.

Between tours and instruction, Ryman estimates they prob-

ably have 500 clients locally per year in-cluding corporate and school outings.

“I’m trying to stay positive so we’ve part-nered up with Boston Pizza and we’re doing

a Two Can Raft and Dine for $139,” she said. “Jordan Perkins, the owner of the Cas-tlegar Boston Pizza, has been really great to give us a bit of a break. The Columbia

[river] doesn’t offer the same kind of ex-citement that the Slo-can does but if we can throw in dinner with the package it defi-nitely makes it more worthwhile.”

Through the Walls of Time

Twenty-third in a more-alphabeti-cal-than-not series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names

Burton, on Upper Arrow Lake, is named a� er Reuben S. Bur-ton (1868-1912) who pre-empted land there in August 1893, a few months before it became a jumping o� point for a short-lived Cariboo Creek gold rush.

� e earliest men-tion is in the Nakusp Ledge of July 5, 1894: “R.S. Burton and the other ranchers along the Narrows have de-cided to call the new town springing up at the mouth of Trout Creek Burton City, in honor of the owner of the townsite.”

� e townsite was not surveyed, howev-er, until June 22, 1897 by Allan Poyntz Pat-

rick — the man who found the � rst oil in Alberta, though it didn’t make him rich.

Burton’s streets included Slocan, Al-berta, Bow, Cariboo, Victoria, Kootenay, and Lardeau, and its avenues were Co-lumbia, Vancouver, Kamloops, Golden, Calgary, Galena, and � e Strand.

� e Burton post of-� ce opened on May 1, 1896. Curiously, the Nelson Daily News of May 23, 1909 stated: “A post o� ce has late-ly been established at what was former-ly known as Burton city … and which has been renamed Burton.” None of the usual postal histo-ry sources indicate it closed around this time.

Reuben Burton, postmaster from 1896-1900, died in California in 1912 of typhoid fever. He’s buried in William-

stown, Ontario. His brothers Byron (1874-� . 1901) and Arthur (1878-� . 1911) also located pre-emptions in the area.

When a school opened in 1909, it was called Burton-dale, presumably to distinguish it from another Burton in the Dewdney riding. But in 1930, Burtondale school became just Burton.

Following the con-struction of the Hugh Keenleyside dam in the 1960s, the original Burton townsite was � ooded out and the community relocated to higher ground at what was � rst called New Burton, but soon just Burton.

It’s not very widely known that Burton had originally been known as Perksville, a� er Nakusp hotel-keeper John Vincent Perks (1868-1957). � e � rst reference was in the Nakusp

Ledge of January 18, 1894: “Almost the entire population of Perksville, a thriving little hamlet at the lower end of the Nar-rows, came up last � ursday evening, in charge of Command-er J. Dawson.”

Perksville only re-ceived a few more mentions before be-ing renamed Burton. � e key one on Feb-ruary 1 read: “F.G. S t ap l e t on - C ot t on and W. Long depart-ed for Perksville last � ursday, their ex-ample being imitated by Messrs. Perks and Burton, who le� for the same place on Tuesday.”

Perks may have been a cousin to the Burtons, for his brother was named Harry Burton Perks.

It may be August already but there are still plenty of fun and exciting events to come in the Koo-tenay Boundary re-gion. The Kettle River Festival of the Arts organization, which is a subcommittee of the Boundary District

Arts Council, is spon-soring several events throughout the sum-mer.

“We don’t actually create the events,” said Ray Lafleur, treasurer for the Kettle River Festival of the Arts. “We help coordinate things and promote them with our adver-tising. Its basically to showcase local talent.

We picked August partly because Chris-tina Lake has so many visitors. Our inten-tion is to hold them across the Boundary. This year we got them into Greenwood, Rock Creek, Chris-tina Lake and Grand Forks.”

Some events have already passed, such as the Riverfest and

Art Walk in Rock Creek on August 3 and 4 but there are still plenty of great events to come.

“We have a net-work of festivals,” added Karen Mauro, chair of the festival of arts. “Coming up to-day is Fiestaval out at the (Christina) lake, there’s the Columbia Basin Cultural Tour

at the lake, there’s the downtown merchant’s day (Wild West Day) in Grand Forks this Friday (Aug. 9). There’s a Raising the Roof Event in Grand Forks on Aug. 11, which is the closing.”

The Fiestaval takes place tomorrow at Christina Living Arts Centre in Christina Lake and features a

celebration of Mexico and Cuba with fabu-lous food, silent and live art auctions. Fea-tured artists include Canadian and U.S. glass blowers plus se-lect regional painters, wood turners, potters and more. Tickets for Fiestaval are available by calling 250-447-6561.

Another event not to miss is The Co-lumbia Basin Culture Tour stop at Christina Living Arts Centre on Sunday (Aug. 11). The centre will fea-ture a beautiful array of local and regional artists and artisans featuring wood, glass, pottery, painting and more. The Columbia Basin Tour itself is a self-guided tour of the entire Columbia Basin region with 80 locations.

Raising the Roof is the wrap-up event for the festival of the arts and takes place at City Park in Grand Forks on Aug. 11. The

event is a fundraiser for Habitat for Hu-manity and will fea-ture artists, dancers, musicians, bands and performance artists.

“We are simply an umbrella,” said Karen Mauro of the Kettle River Festival of the Arts organization. “We’ve been adver-tising to bring peo-ple into the area. Our website, which we’re very proud of, posts all the events on it. People can check for times, place, costs and that kind of thing.”

The Kettle River Festival of the Arts is a great way to show-case local talent and events, Mauro added.

“We have so much talent and things to show off here,” she said. “We want to bring people out to see their own. Any money you spend at the Farmers’ Market or Back to the Wild West stays in this community and ben-efits local people.”

The actions of three individuals prevent-ed a forest fire at the scene of an Aug. 1 accident on Highway according to Grand Forks RCMP. The truck rollover acci-dent and subsequent fire occurred near the Wilgress Lake rest area, between Grand Forks and Green-

wood, and Grand Forks Fire Rescue was dispatched but Const. Neal Kalnin said pass-ersby assisted greatly in containing the fire. “The fire travelled up the hill and three peo-ple took the time to stop and put out the fire that was travelling up the embankment and I believe due to their actions, we did not have a forest fire,” Kalnin said.

There’s something to be said for being the home-town candidate, even if it doesn’t win you the elec-tion, poll-by-poll break-downs from the last provin-cial election suggest.

Neither Joseph Hughes, a Nakusp village councillor who ran in Kootenay West as an independent, nor Greg Garbula, the Liberal candidate in Nelson-Cres-ton came close to winning their respective races, but they did top some polls in their own backyards.

Data released by Elec-tions BC from the May vote shows that Hughes, who campaigned on the Columbia River Treaty and finished third among four candidates with 13 per cent of the vote, was the top choice among Upper Arrow Lake residents. He won seven of the 11 ballot boxes in that area, securing 37.5 per cent of the vote to incumbent New Democrat Katrine Conroy’s 34.4 per

cent. Conroy still won a landslide re-election over-all, with heavy support ev-erywhere else in the riding, including the Slocan Val-ley, Castlegar, and Greater Trail. Liberal candidate Jim Postnikoff only won a sin-gle poll, in the Glenbank area of Nakusp, although he finished second in most others.

Garbula, formerly the longtime manager of Ko-kanee Springs Resort at Crawford Bay, won three

polls on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake, earning strongest support in the corridor between Boswell and Wynndel.

However, incumbent New Democrat Michelle Mungall easily took polls that included Crawford Bay, Gray Creek, Riondel, Pilot Bay, and Kootenay Bay. Garbula also won sev-eral polls in Creston, but so did Mungall.

Green Party candidate Sjeng Derkx didn’t win any

polls en route to a third-place finish, but was run-ner-up in many, especial-ly in and around Nelson. Mungall won the overall race by a wide margin.

In Boundary-Similka-meen, Grand Forks resi-dents were much more like-ly to vote New Democrat than elsewhere in the rid-ing: Sam Hancheroff took 15 of 17 polls over Liberal challenger Linda Larson. Hancheroff also won both Greenwood polls and two of three in Midway.

Things were closer in Christina Lake, where Lar-son took two polls, Han-cheroff one, and they tied in another. They also tied in Rock Creek.

Larson saw strong sup-port in the western part of the riding, including Oliver, where she was on town council, and Kaleden, where Hancheroff lives — in this instance, he didn’t enjoy a home-town advan-tage. Larson was ultimately elected with 46.6 per cent of the vote to Hancheroff ’s 39 per cent.

Of the many stops I made on a recent tour through the Okanagan, Church & State Wines was one of the truly memorable ones.

First, about the name. It isn’t as complicated as one might expect: “Symbolizes a balance between the many elements involved in creat-ing the highest quality wine we can produce,” says the literature.

I arrived late one after-noon, without an appoint-ment. The drive to the winery takes one straight into the centre of a huge vineyard on the Black Sage bench, one of the best grow-ing areas in the country. A grey industrial-type build-ing belies what the visit was about to reveal. Over to the north was huge tent set up on a wood floor. At anoth-er winery I had been told that it has served as owner Kim Pullen’s home in recent months. It wasn’t a question I pursued while there, but wine shop manager Trish Lynn told other guests that it could be used for events in the future.

A successful business-man, Pullen founded Church & State on Vancou-ver Island in 2004 when he purchased a 25-acre estate on the Saanich Peninsula. The existing building was renovated to become a Napa Valley-like destination for visitors and to accommo-date events. First, fruit was brought in from contract growers in the Okanagan, and then Pullen purchased a 15-acre parcel on the Golden Mile, where Merlot, Viognier and Malbec now grow.

He then acquired the

land that has become Coy-ote Bowl Vineyard, which is now home to the wine-making facilities and fab-ulous wine bars and shop. Plantings there include Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Bordeaux, which allow Church & State to make their flagship Bor-deaux blend, Quintessen-tial, from grapes grown on site.

Another purchase of property nearby allowed for the planting of Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier to produce a Rhone blend, Trebella.

Last year, Coyote Bowl had added to it an outdoor tasting bar, “where guests can sit and enjoy one of the most cutting edge winery experiences in B.C.” Visi-tors can enjoy wine samples or a glass while looking out from their seats under the awning-covered bar to a remarkable view. Inside the building is a long granite bar with plenty of seats for wine samplers. Behind the bar a glass wall shows off the barrel room behind. Wine

writer Anthony Gismondi writes that the winery has “The two best wine bar ex-periences in the Okanagan.”

When I arrived, hoping to meet with Trish Lynn to do a magazine story interview on Church & State Wines, a couple of small groups were seated, and clearly en-joying what they were tast-ing. I assured Trish I was not in a hurry and sat back to watch her conduct tast-ings for a half dozen women who had arrived in a wine country touring limo. They were out for a day of fun, but they clearly knew plen-ty about wine, too. They also knew what they liked, as evidenced by the stacked wheeled cart that was used to haul cases out to the limo.

I was at the end of a long day, too tired to do much in the way of sampling, but my sips of Cab Franc and Syrah were over-the-top good. No surprise there, though, be-cause at the outset Pullen set a goal to have one of the top three wineries in B.C.

� e tennis courts in Trail’s Butler Park were a hub of ac-tion this week as 11 Greater Trail pickleball athletes honed their skills in preparation for the 16th annual BC Senior Games.

� is summer, from Aug. 20 to 24, Kamloops will host the multi-sport event to 3,500 participants from all over the province.

With close to 30 sports ranging from pickleball to ice hockey, and cribbage to one-act-plays the games are a unique event that promotes health and lifestyle of athletes 55—plus with the mission “to promote active participation by seniors in sport, recreation, � tness, culture and self-edu-cation.”

Trail, Castlegar and Nelson collectively hosted the Games in 2011, attracting more than 3,000 athletes, coaches and supporters to the area.

For Fruitvale native John Wur� inger, a two-year mem-ber of the Greater Trail Pick-leball Community, the games

will be a � rst-time experience“I am excited,” said Wur-

� inger. “I am really looking forward to seeing how we measure up compared to the rest of the province.”

To qualify for the games in Greater Trail, a system is in place in the pickleball com-munity, based on ability of play, rather than age group.

“I have no super expec-tations of my game but I am looking forward to playing,” he said. “And it gives me an opportunity in a competitive scene to � nd out how well I am doing.”

Wur� inger been serving up his competitive spirit with fellow pickleball members all year, but in July his grandchil-dren gave him a run for his money.

“It is an easy and fun game to play,” he said.

“My six and eight-year old grandchildren were visiting this summer and hit the ball with us. And they did very well for � rst-time players,” he chuckled.

Wur� inger frequently trav-els outside his home turf to rally a friendly game, and

Monday he challenged pick-leball enthusiasts in Grand Forks to a round.

“Just yesterday we went there to play some really great people,” he said.

“Not only is great teamwork and exercise involved, but it is a very sociable game which is why most of us play.”

Last week the Greater Trail Pickleball Community jumped into a project and be-gan converting a Butler Park tennis court into a dedicated pickleball court, an initiative that has been on the back burner for a few years await-ing approval from the City of Trail.

Earlier this year, the city allotted $10,000 from the Columbia Basin Trust Com-munity Initiatives Program to the Greater Trail Pickleball Community for conversion of a Butler Park tennis court into a dedicated pickleball court.

“What we are � nding is that with the number of peo-ple playing pickleball, three courts just aren’t enough,” Wur� inger explained.

Although pick-leball appears to be very similar to tennis, it is more accessible to a wider range of play-ers, particularly chil-dren and seniors.

and plastic wi� e (pickleball) ball, and a net similar to that used in tennis, but mounted two inches lower. � e pickleball ball typically moves at one-third the average speed of a tennis ball

and the court is just under one-third the area of a tennis court.

Mika Fortin is a happy seven-year-old girl who was diagnosed with PDD-NOS (autism) at age five.

Her family knew their amazing daughter was developing atypically and they started varied therapies from age two.

She is making steady progress: seeks out her family’s company, shows more eye-contact and has developed a greater attention span and she now uses around 15 words regularly, expresses her wants more clearly and has been known to con-tribute to the dinner table conver-sations from time to time.

But the fundraising effort to help pay for her education and special needs continues and the family has turned to the community of Ross-land for help. So far the family has raised $8,000 towards their $13,000 goal. They’ve also made it to the Option Institute for a total of three advanced programs in the last 18 months to solidify their home pro-gram.

Mika’s mom Genevieve Fortin will continue to home school Mika through the summer and started training a new facilitator that will start in September. They will be doing an intensive program with Mika starting Sept. 30. This is awe-some and scary news as they are still in need of more funds to make it happen, $5,000 more to be exact.

The July and fall sessions will run at $2,000-$3000. The fami-ly used their personal funds as much as they could and the school

funding helps a long ways to pay a teacher/facilitator at home to help Genevieve, but between running a gluten and corn free diet with pro-biotics supplements and the costs of tuition/training they cannot do it alone. Hence their need to fund raise, again.

“We are so grateful for the con-tributions of the community. It’s a real lesson in humility every time we receive donations, but we love our daughter and we will do every-thing to offer her the best chance to find her voice,” said Genevieve.

“We do what we believe in and if it means asking for help, so be it. In exchange, people that give can really impact the life of a little girl, her family and the community she belongs to.”

Whoever the dog-lover was who coined the phrase: ‘man’s best friend,’ was pretty close to the mark. The only revi-sion would be ‘man, woman and kids’ best friend.’

Yes, we all love our dogs and there are a million reasons why.

The West Kootenay Kennel Club has been celebrating purebred dogs for the past four decades and is hold-ing an event in Cas-tlegar Friday through Sunday, August 16-18 at the Castlegar Com-munity Church field. It’s up the hill near Kinnaird Park.

“This year we will be hosting our 39th Annual All Breed Dog Show and Obedience and Rally Obedience trials,” says club plan-ner Donna Konkin. “Over the years the

dog show has been held in various loca-tions throughout the area.”

It’s fascinating to see this wide variety of dogs, especially when they’re put to the test in their various trials. The public is welcome to come out and enjoy the spectacle. These competitors don’t see any difference be-tween themselves and world champions and neither would a casual observer.

The West Kootenay Kennel Club encour-ages interested folks to join the group which currently stands at 28

members. The club meets monthly, is gov-erned by the Canadian Kennel Club, and cur-rently has 20 beautiful breeds represented.

“We support each other in all aspects of training and just enjoying the time we spend with our dogs,” says Konkin who, in 2012, earned the dis-tinction of ‘Owner/Handler of the Year.’

heritage sites during this free, self-guided event. Travel to stu-dios and archives that aren’t normally open, see demonstrations, new exhibitions and collections or meet people behind the scenes. To participate

Castlegar’s Sculp-turewalk is an out-door exhibit of original sculptures, displayed year-round in downtown Castle-

gar. Featuring artists from across North America, viewers can vote for their favourite via ballot: The People’s Choice is purchased by the City of Castlegar for the permanent col-lection. Joining us

this year is Jillian Davis who is a paint-er who received her BFA from Nova Sco-tia College of Art and Design. Jillian’s work is bold, contempo-rary, and often based on concepts or intui-tive states.

Opposite the air-port in Castlegar, the Doukhobor Dis-covery Centre is a ‘Traditional’ Village Located on 10 acres of heritage orchard on the edge of the Columbia River, you have much to see and explore. Thousands of artifacts, books, documents, crafts are displayed for your viewing pleasure. ‘Heritage Costumes” is their new display for 2013. This is also the home of the Sel-kirk Spinners and Weavers Guild. It’s a non-profit organi-zation that has been active in the West Kootenays since 1972. They also fea-ture a lovely gift shop, full of handcrafted work. Just down the road is The Koote-nay Gallery of Art, a principal gallery for the visual arts within the West Kootenay region. It provides a professional venue for regional as well as national artists to show and sell their work. A wonderful gift shop on site fea-tures the work of over 100 local artists and craftspeople.

Castlegar is also home to Selkirk Col-lege where the Gath-ering Place at Selkirk College provides a welcoming environ-ment for students and community members to come together and celebrate Aboriginal culture. As part of the Columbia Basin Culture Tour, this stop will offer an op-portunity to tour the brand new Gather-ing Place facility and the indigenous plant gardens surrounding the Gathering Place building and tipi.

Guests will be in-vited to participate in a handwork activity

and to view some of the beautiful artwork in the Gathering Place. Some of the artwork at the Gath-ering Place includes a locally made and hand-painted grand-mother drum and a custom-made metal shield.

In the Robson area, see Mirja Vahala and her distinctive land-scape paintings while visiting her spacious art instruction stu-dio. Discover oppor-tunities to learn how to draw and paint, or to raise your art skills. Browse the stu-dio plus see more art-work at Windborne B&B, where Mirja’s studio is housed. Paintings are avail-able for purchase. Enjoy the beautiful B&B gardens too.

In Salmo at Joe’s Art Gallery you will find a warm welcome from artist Joe Hor-vath who loves to share the art that he enjoys so much cre-ating.

“I paint a variety of subjects. I use a lot of colour. I am a retired man, and love art, and love showing it to people.”

‘School’s Out’ (bronze)

It’s nearly summertime, that glori-ous moment when schoolchildren the world over can abandon learning and enjoy two months of unbridled freedom. Appropriately, the talented duo of Lee Leuning and Sherri Treeby celebrate the rite of passage with ‘School’s Out’ in their second appear-ance at Sculpturewalk Castlegar.

Two years ago, their whimsical bronze of a book-engrossed young man oblivious to his dripping ice cream cone and bene� cial terrier - Summer Distractions – was a fa-vourite here. � e imagery is not dis-similar in ‘Schools Out’ but the mood certainly is. Young Chet is all action, schoolbooks abandoned at his feet and report card (un� attering; he’s had trouble focusing it says) jammed unheeded in the back pocket of rolled up at the cu� jeans. It’s baseball time!

Our protagonist rears back imitating the great Satchel Paige’s unorthodox style, his right hand clenching the ball nearly touching the ground. His le� leg is kicked high as he readies

to throw smoke at an unseen batter. Glove resting on his le� hip, spindly arms in a t-shirt, his face is a study in concentration under his ball cap as he stretches fully and prepares to uncoil a fastball. Perfectly titled, ‘School’s Out’ is a classic pose of a favourite summer pursuit, capturing the pleasure of the game and the � nally-realized joy of being free to play it.

� e two South Dakota artists have worked together for many years, � rst collaborating while both at-tended Northern State University in Aberdeen; Treeby while completing a Master’s degree in art history and Leuning in the course of evening art classes. Eventually they launched their own company – Bad River Art-works – and became more serious about fulltime sculpting. Leuning is a retired wildlife enforcement o� cer while Treeby continues to teach, both at the high school level and as a col-lege art instructor.

Initially, their forte was highly detailed animal studies, gaining them a nation-al reputation through featured artists status for conservation organizations like the Rocky Mountain Elk Founda-tion and Ducks Unlimited. � ese and other charity/conservation organiza-tions sold their wildlife sculptures at auctions and fundraising events. While they still do scale replicas and original works of animal studies, now-adays they specialize in high-relief � gurative bronzes, with an emphasis on historical � gures or representations emblematic of a particular period of time in American history.

“Over a decade ago we were chosen as part of a national group of four sculp-tors commissioned for the American Presidents project in Rapid City, South Dakota,” says Leuning. “Over the life of that massive project we’ve sculpted ten of the life-size, exact bronze monuments. Now historical � gure commissions make up much of our busy schedule.”

� at said, the duo are adept at creat-ing almost anyone, or anything ( uni-versity mascots, dragons, animals), in beautiful, life-like bronze. � e detail is incredibly exacting in every instance, whether it’s a president, a soldier, a shepherd, an eagle or a play-ground baseball player.

‘To Love Is To Be’ (bronze)

Currently touring the United States with his latest collection of stunning bronzes – the Meditation series – Martin Eichinger is never one to rest on his considerable laurels.

His evocative studies capture the wonder and beauty of the (predomi-nantly) female form in thematic series of delicate, gracefully styled bronzes painstakingly envisioned and cra� ed in his Portland, Oregon studio. Meditation features four linked sculp-tures that are distinctively Eichinger’s; his style is undeniably romantic, per-sonal, and narrative. Last year, he dis-played the ethereal, beautiful � ree Options Are Open from the same series at Sculpturewalk.

“� e human form, especially the female, o� ers so many possibilities to me,” he says. “More important though, is to visualize and embrace that form as the essence of something much deeper. I try to capture the in-trinsic ‘being’ when I create. I aim to sculpt the soul of the form, it enables my soul and heart to be transferred to the piece.”

He has succeeded brilliantly with ‘To Love Is To Be’. � e � ve foot tall work rises from its granite beginning in a swirl of � ourishes, his characteristic initial abstraction merging into the clean, exact anatomy of a young god-dess looking and raising her arms heavenward. Clad in gauzy fabric, her wavy hair tied in a full bun behind her head, she stretches her � ngers imploringly. � e second in the four ‘breaths’ in the Meditation series, ‘To Love Is To Be’ speaks from and to the heart.

“� is breath is all about emotive release, of loving and being loved,” Eichinger explains. “� ere is plaintive longing here. � e need for, in addition to the desire to give, comfort, tender caress and requited love is empha-sized in her expression, her physique and her reach forward.”

Dynamic, self-exacting and insistent on perfection in his studies, Eich-inger’s narrative, emotive limited-edition sculptures can be found in private and public collections around the world. His work is carried by more than two dozen galleries across the United States.

A professional member and Fellow of the National Sculpture Society, he is also a founding member of the Paci� c Northwest Sculpture Association. He has done numerous commissions and is the recipient of many major awards, but his proudest achievement is the years spent instructing and mentor-ing young artists in � gurative sculp-ture techniques. Many of his students have gone on to enjoy successful ca-reers of their own.

“To impart knowledge and share the passion invoked by creativity is truly a joy,” he acknowledges. “I’m an emotional person – it’s apparent in my work – and I want to � re the emotions and stoke the souls of my students when I’m instructing. Desire and heart are a must.”

� e qualities Eichinger instills in his students is plainly evident in his love-ly sculpture displayed here this year. ‘To Love Is To Be’ is aptly titled, lov-ingly created and spectacularly cast.
