Hindsight is a wonderful thing. There's probably several good reasons why Turvey Park should have beaten Collingullie-Ashmont last week and avoided one of the biggest upsets in Mercantile Mutual Riverina Football League for many years. But no matter how hard the Dogs reassess their performance, the fighting Demons still have the points ... and nothing can change that now.

Turvey Park's best bet would be to hit back hard - very hard - against Leeton-Whitton in their encounter at Leeton this Sunday. It's hard to go past the Bulldogs to win this game against the so far winless Crows - Turvey will be hurting for some time but the key ingredient to a good remedy is a good win. But let's not forget the Demons were the winners and nothing should be taken away from them in their moment of glory.

The Demons were the subject of much criticism when they were included in the RFL in the leagues' revamp last year. Coming from low in the Farrer League to the stronger RFL didn't impress the pundits who said it was a backward move for the Demons.

A strong recruiting drive which yielded quality local players now sees the Demons with two wins from their first three games and a strong percentage has them sitting hard third on the ladder behind the only unbeaten team Wagga Tigers, and Narrandera.

And the Demons will be eager to get among East Wagga-Kooringal this week, using last week's victory as a springboard to more success against the Wagga clubs.

East Wagga claimed their second win with a 13-point victory against the highly competitive Coolamon. There wasn't much in the final result with the Hoppers sticking to the Hawks all the way. Coolamon's improvement must also please the league's chiefs. The Hoppers have

Wagga First Aid Supplies

been a respected force in the RFL over the years and their recovery seems well on the way after a disappointing few seasons in the cellar.

Russell Campbell's influence back at Kindra Park is evident and his no-nonsense approach has the Hoppers back on track. One of Coolamon's toughest tests this season comes this weekend in the traditional local derby against Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong. No matter where these teams are placed on the table it's always a tough, at time fiery, hit-out between the local lads - and they love it!

Ganmain continues to build up and should again be there come September. They would start favourite against the Hoppers, probably suiting Campbell, but reputations will be left in the sheds come Sunday.

Narrandera's winning run came to a halt against Tigers last week but the Eagles were far from disgraced. Losing by only 14 points the Eagles had a red-hot go against the defending premier and impressed with their tenacious approach. Tigers' mentor Terry Daniher proved the difference so the Eagles command respect after a promising start to the season. Their performance against Temora this week will be vital to the campaign. The Kangaroos, too, will be keen to bounce back after falling to Griffith by five goals.

North Wagga kick-started their season with a decisive win against Leeton last week. It won't be that easy against Tigers at Robertson Oval on Saturday in a game the Saints really need to win. There was plenty of pre-season buildup to this match with Saints' leader Tony Melican boldly predicting Tigers would win their fourth straight title this year, with the ability to do it in an unbeaten manner. Whether that statement gives Tigers a false sense of security in prematch mind games remains to be seen. Daniher will reinforce how crucial it will be for his players to stay focused for this game.

Mangoplah-Cookardinia United has gone three games without a win but they remain competitive. The Goannas tackle Griffith at Mangoplah on Saturday in search of that elusive win.

In what was a great promotional day for football the Swans had six wins with the only downer for the day being the netball.

WHITE, RED V The Seniors proved to themselves that they are more than capable of playing good hard football against a quality opposition for 4 quarters. the boys will need to perform just as well this week against an opposition who always, in the words of the not so cranky, this week, senior coach, "seem to grow another leg when they play us". The awards for last week were $100 Chris "Elastoplast Man" Conlan, $50 Trevor" I held her hand again" Clarke, $30 Jamie Bennett, $20 Mick Smith . The Players Player award went to Don Moran.

The Reseive grade had another good win after a great first half. The awards were $30 Ron 'What time does training start?" livin , $20 Steve Cochran and $10 Glen Vaccari. The Players Player Mug to Patrick Dempsey and the Mugs' Mug to Christian Files.

The Under 1 B's put it together again and had another good win after a few numbers on the track on Thursday night. Gorgeous George will keep you all on your toes when he gets the full squad together. The awards went to Rod Savage, Adam Sava and Dwayne Ashcroft. Other good players included Matt Signor and Rodney Duncan.

In Social news I am reliably informed that Brett McAlister will have a social calendar ready for you all soon, so please make sure you all

STRIPES

First of all, apologies for last weeks absence of notes, ( yes it seems I was the only on who didn't see the changed deadline in the Record).

Well, what a great day at Griffith last Saturday, for the netballers. Yes, ladies have

once again shown us gent the way with 2 terrific triumphs over the Swanettes. "Jumpin" Jacinta Ives in the A grade and Michelle "Dustin" Hoffman in B grade will be forced to re-arrange their sock drawers as a consequence of their award winning performances.

Earhole's Under 18's copped it in the neck again, this time by an unflattering 136 points. Stick at it boys and I'm sure you'll start to get results, The Waratah award went to that little terrier, Jamie O'Callaghan, Steven Drum pocketed the $1 O cash and the award winning machine, Soldier, grabbed the Laurie Matthews socks.

Dazzling one week, diabolical the next. That was the story for Cag's Seconds who copped a 57 point whacking. In a game best forgotten by players and spectators alike, the $20 was won by the possession gathering machine Glen "Little Tiger: Hartwig, "Mighty" Marty Van Egmond took out the socks while Mick Breust won the Westy award with some terrific run in defence.

By the time yours truly wandered out of the sheds the scoreboard showed the Ones down by 5 goals and that was the story of the night. We got a shocker of a start and just couldn't bridge that gap. On the positive side, Mick Kotzur continues to improve and was rewarded with the Players' Players.

Marriage seems to agree with Dallas McKelvie as he took the fuel from BFB, while scootin' tootin' Scotty Sinclair extracted the socks from Max Deal.

Social Calendar: Don't forget the Mystery Bus Tour which leaves the clubhouse at 6:30 tonight, with music on the bus to be provided by Max Cole. Where it stops, nobody know ... .. . .

Also, keep Saturday June 15th (bye weekend) free fro the Club Ball, to be held at the Golf Club. Intending patrons are urged to brush up on their waltzing and foxtrot in the meantime.

Today we face Bruce Mitchells old side, the Narrandera Eagles and desperately need a win to keep up with the leaders.

Second best won't do - so let's stick it up 'em!!

What an entertaining game of football last Saturday. Our Seniors just could not hold Tigers out in the last quarter to be beaten by 14 points. Was a good effort but I'm sure no one will be too carried away for this

The netballers had a mixed day winning two, losing one and a forfeit for our Under 15's. A Grade lost34-46, best were Emma Burden, Kim Hugo and Clair Spencer. 11 Well that was a big improvement from the last 2 weeks. The commitment was there from the first bounce, but still there is a long way to go and I believe we can do better

BLACK. WHITE & if you concentrate on the games in RED front of us, so come on boys lets

keep the ball rolling. This week we take on the Tigers and we need to dig deep for this game. Palm & Pawn award went to Graham McDonald, Red Steer dinner fro Two went Matt Chilcott. K & J Trophies Beer Mug went to Nigel Frances, Hair Care Hair Cut went to Dave Gardner.

Reserves have a difficult task ahead of them, there are a few that are putting their heart and soul into each game the rest need to be a bit more dedicated and start working with the rest of the team. Numbers are improving, please get to training and to the games, as it is still early in the season to make a come back. Palm & Pawn award went to Steven Ryan, Nth Wagga Ampol award went to Julian Clarkson, Thomas Blarney award went to Nigel McKellar, K & J Trophies Beer Mug went to Jason Carey.

U 18's, what a win boys winning by 39 points if you keep playing the way you did Saturday you could be looking at a berth in the finals. But of course ii came to the 2nd quarter and we decided to have a rest, again we must forget the 2nd quarter and keep working for 4 quarters. K & J Trophies and Palm & Pawn dinner went to Geoff Pheiffer, Crampton St Store went to Steve Nicholls, Fife & Air Elect. award went to Chris Pedler, Bob for the Job award went to Mat Cowper.

Netball report: C grade showed fine style scoring 12 goals, well done girls. The Mug went to Shelley Vincent and Nancy Brown won the Pizza Haven award. B grade put up a great fight in the second half only going down by 5 goals in the ending stages. The Mug went to Alison Knight and the Palm & Pawn dinner went to Rebecca Cox. A grade had a disappointing game with only 5 girls turning up and then getting injured. Thanks goes to those who helped by filling in. Mug went to Nicole Webb and the Palm & Pawn dinner went to Tracie Burr.

Don't forget the Stripper Night planned for the 1st June. Don't forget the Trash & Treasure on Sunday at 11 am McPherson Oval if there is anything you don't want please bring it over to sell.

I Oh what a feeling Toyota!

Whoops I mean the Demons. Have you ever seen so many smiling faces, we were like the cat that got the cream, and we did get the cream all three grades of it, so

RED. WHITE v now we know we can do it let's do some more. It would have been nice to give everyone an award but we can 't so the Mug and Dinner for Two at the Tolland Hotel went to Rob Meyers the John Waring Endeavour Award to Sam Carey. The R.H. Blake Award to Brett Page and the Coaches Award to Paul Piercy.

Our Reserves battled hard to take the points. What about Greg Beer, he played like he was possessed by Old Nick himself, great effort. Yes Greg Beer gets the Mug. David Meyers gets yet another Dinner for Two (nearly party time Dave) and how many haircuts can you have A.J. Yes Adam Jenkins gets the Ashmont Hair Cut.

How about our U18s. Two awards went to boys who came up from the U16s this year and one still in the U16s. They didn 't start off too good , kicking 6 behinds in the First Quarter, but made up for it in the other 3 Quarters.

The Ashmont Staff Towel Award went to Dave Somerville who battled hard all day. The Silvalite Award to Corey Frater, and the Video Ezy Award to Brett Parr.

The members of our Club were saddened by the death of Col Lewington last week. Col played with our Club during the 60's, the flag pole at the Crossroads Oval was a gift from the Lewington Family. To Lyn and the family we offer our deepest sympathy.

We have a couple of coming events to mention - June 1st against North Wagga we will have a get together in our new function room and on the 22nd June against Temora we will have our Red & White Ball in the hall .

The Berrigans Weekly Award went to Rob Meyers on 26 points.

Netballers please get your notes to me after every game , otherwise I can 't give you a mention, all I know is they lost both grades.

BROWN & The Under 18's battled hard all GOLD STRIPES day against a strong Coolamon

outfit, Luke Lieschke, one of our Under 16's, showed he is a player of the future in his first game with the Club, and won the McDonalds and incentive Awards.Joel Grieve took out the Argweld Sox, and Steve Castle won the Coke Award.

The real Second Grade side had another convincing win. With three handy 2nd Graders taking out the awards. Brad Wild, B.O.G. winning the Mug, Mick Ziebell the Cornell Fuel Award, and Nathan East the Civic Video. Welcome back Easty.

Our 1st Grade side battled hard all day to overcome a determined and much improved Coolamon outfit. Damien Graham won the Breust's Mug and Farrer Meal, Barry Suckling the Eagle Boys Pizza, and Brian Hawke won the Civic Video.

A big thank you to Barry Suckling for filling in for Baulchy as coach. Barry played a great game leading from the front and for his efforts took out the ''Tee Dee's Haircut" as Hawk of the

·Day. The netball awards went to A Grade, Michelle

Walker, B Grade to Tanya Schiebel, C Grade to . Nolene Sullivan and Juniors Stacey Grieve. Also a special mention to Jean Gorham who had a busy day umpiring, playing and being on hand for a Coolamon girl who was injured.

The Golf Night was a great success, Kristen Gillard and Jean Gorham winning the ladies event, and Greenkeepers and Cours e designers Mary and Lester winning the Men's in a play off.

Today we meet Collingullie, let's keep the winning streak going.

■ First up, congratulations to

Damian and Helen last weekend, did you enjoy the honeymoon? It must be said that we are extremely disappointed that

NAVY sLuE Damian couldn't attend his own RED & GoLD Hoops Bucks party on Anzac Day. We

went to all that trouble just for him. Sunday footy again, hopefully a change of

days means a change in attitudes and fortunes. Last Saturday there were a number of triers

but not enough teamwork. Shane Till took home a shirt f ram Lloyd Pilkington and Shane Whelan will get a delicious Pizza from Papa's Foodarama.

Best on ground in a good Reserve Grade team effort was Allan McPhee and he will receive the Brute Pack from Len Wades Pharmacy.

An undermanned and young Under 18's team battled all day with Dudley Dunbar receiving the $10 from Boltens Pest Control, and John Protheroe can watch his favourite Gumby Video from Leeton Video.

Quite a few netballers got value for their money when they had to double up and play a couple of games. I thought that only happens on the footy field. They still performed like professionals by winning all games. Award winners were Michelle Lumsden in A Grade, Jasmine Matthews B Grade and Natalie Harrison in C Grade.

Our lucrative 300 Club draw has a couple of spare numbers, so if you are interested please contact Carl Blackman or any other Committee person.

The Committee has decided to jump the gun this year and try to establish a proper Recruiting Committee. This Committee will provide the basis of the Clubs' future. We need people willing to commit themselves and to channel all their footy knowledge into the job. If we can't form this Committee then the Clubs' future will have a big question mark hanging over it. If interested please contact Jim Milne.

Today Turvey will be expecting a tough encounter so let's not disappoint. And a reminder that everybody is invited back to the Wade Sports Club to dissect the game over a few beers.

The idea of football on Anzac

-

Day proved a winner with a large crowd turning out for our game against a rejuvenated Gullie team last week. In what is a rare

RED, WHITE & BLUE

occurrence for Turvey Park in recent years all three teams were beaten.

In the main game the Demons got the jump early and had a very handy lead by the main break. All were hoping for a form turn around in the second half, it did happen, but not enough when the siren sounded. Lee Richards showed his class receiving the Workforce on Tap Award plus 8 votes. Darren Turner the Salon on Morgan Award, with Knoxy the Mug. Brett Hewitt, Vags and Ben Nimmo deserve a mention.

The 2nds just couldn 't convert in their game ending up being beaten by 7 points , it could have easily been a win. Workpower on Tap Award to "H" (Andrew Harmer) Steve Nash the Car Wash, with the Mug to a consistent Dave Pike. It was a team effort with 7 players featuring in the voting.

The U18's battled hard against an unbeaten outfit and to their credit stuck to the task all day, maybe today will see them come home with the 4 points. Sam Ford played well again and received Robbo's Award. David Coupe the $10.00 Award, with Jarrod Brown the Socks.

Our trip to EWK last week was about as fruitful as an orchard in a desert. Only the Junior netballers and the U18's were able to come away with a win.

In the netball the Juniors GREEN, WHITE started with more promise than

v an election campaign, winning 29-6 with Carmen O'Brien the

star. Then the downhill slide started the C's went down 11-26, Jenna Collins winning the award. The B's lost 22-25 with the reclusive Virginia Pattison taking the award. The growing injury list within the club was unfortunately added to with Kylie Hamilton the latest addition. The A's copped a good old fashioned shellacking with the captain-coach Heather Holden trying hard to lift the team.

The 18's showed they will be a definite threat this year with a top win over the young Hawks. Unfortunately the game was marred by probably the worst umpiring display since Anzac Day. How are these young players supposed to get enjoyment from the game when it is being controlled(?) by an umpire who awards marks from handballs? Memo RUA: The Clubs expect value for money! Anyway, the Club Award was won by Luke Maloney, who displayed more skills than a busload of Jarmans. The Barty Takeaway was won by Punky Breust, who looks like he needs a good feed. The socks were won by the 21st descendant of Mr. Walker, Guy Hyland, and the Commins Hendriks Award by another U16 from last year, Gubba McPherson.

The 2nds started well enough, but faded in the second half. But there were highlights galore, including snaps by Mick "Plugger" Salmon, the two bookends on HBF's, Mick "Crusher" Kane and Ross "Brick with Ears" Eustace creating more havoc than the Hezbollah and the appearance of the legendary Neil Pleming on the field once again. The Goode Family Award was won by Gerard "Windy" McPherson, who has made a welcome return to the Club. The towel was won by Graham "Spit" Rowlands, and the socks by Wayne 'The Card Shark" Kew.

The 1 sts squandered more chances than a Pakistani fieldsman and recorded a disappointing loss. Craig "Hatty" Pedretti was

Again , after a slow start we gradually drew away for a good win over Mangoplah. Jed Lawton with seven goals won the Sports

BLUE s~~uLoERs Cl~b Award, Anthony Carroll the GOLD cResT Bnttens Towel and the socks to

Michael Steele. Miltons Gear votes went the same way, 3 Jed Lawton, 2 Anthony Carroll and 1 to Michael Steele.

The Reserves had a huge win with Dennis Walsh winning his third Bowling Club Award in a row. Phil Hatty won the Ganmain Store Towel with Greg Menzies winning the socks. Nadines Dinner for Two went to Joe Fraser.

The Under 1 B's went down after only playing decent footy for a while in the last quarter. Shaun Rava won the Club Towel, Brandon Ryan the Farrer Hotel Award and the socks to Gavin Lenon.

Great to see Dud Mattingly back at the game last Sunday after a spell in hospital in Sydney. Best wishes also to Garry Carroll who is undergoing treatment in Sydney.

Ex-Lion, Daniel Frosty McPherson, looked to have a great game for the Swans last weekend against Hawthorn in his first senior game this year. His goal he kicked, was a real gem, at least 60 metres.

This week we visit our old rivals, the Grasshoppers, where we don't want to see another slow start. Anthony George Carroll celebrates his 50th First Grade game today and if it's as good as his 49th it should be a cracker.

All teams are now well into the swing of the 1996 season. There have been some close results and also a few upsets in the RFL, the same unfortunately can't be said for the Farrer F.L.

All junior football is well underway and it is Junior representative football that we focus on this week.

WOJAFA The selection process in the Wagga and

District Juniors involves each Club nominating their four best players from each age group. These players are then invited to attend selection trials for the respective representative teams. The Under 13's and Under 14's teams are based on the pre-selected development squads which were brought together in the pre season. Other players will be added or deleted as their form suggests.

Representative football can be a huge highlight for both players and clubs alike. It can kick start a magnificent career that may end at the AFL or may involve life membership at a local club. It certainly is a major highlight in the junior career of young players.

WDSAFA will play the South West Juniors at Ardlethan on the 26th May. Age groups selected will be the Under 11 's, 13's, 14's and 15's. Their second representative game will be against Canberra on the 1st June. Details of this game are yet to be confirmed although it is expected that the games will be played at Gumly Gumly on this day to coincide with the inaugural RAMS Riverina Home Match against the Murray Bush rangers.

Western Riverina. In the West Paul Habel informs me that the

Greenfoods Challenge is on Sunday 19th May at Griffith . This will include representative teams from the South West Juniors, Northern Riverina, Hay and Coleambally.

Players in all regions in the Under 15 age group are aiming for regional selection to play the Under 15 State Championships at Barooga from the 29th June to 1st July. More will follow about this topic.

Primary School Football. Over the last two weeks teams have been

selected to represent 11 different regions in the NSW Annual Primary Schools' Sports Association State Carnival in Sydney. This is to be held on the 28th.29th and 30th May and its' purpose is to pick the PSSA State Team for the National Primary Schools Carnival in Melbourne. Teams have been selected for both Eastern and Western Riverina as well as a McKillop team representing the Catholic and Independent Schools of NSW. The players

selected included: Brent Fraser (Lake Albert Public), Matthew Fraser (Lake Albert Public), Andrew Hayes (Beckom Public), Matthew Doswell (Lake Albert Public}, John Turner (Wagga Public), Ryan Chamberlain (Coolamon Central) and Darren Price (Ashmont Public). Players selected for McKillop included : Bryce Campbell (Henschke}, Steven Daniher (Sacred Heart), Joshua Stinson (Henschke), Jason Krause (St. Annes, Temora), Brent Krause (St Annes, Temora), Brett Owen (St. Patricks, Griffith), Chris Egan (St. Josephs, Leeton}, Mitchell Carroll (St.Brendans, Ganmain), Brent Bender (St.Josephs, Lockhart) and Adam Schneider (St. Josephs, Lockhart). Congratulations to all these boys and good luck at the trials in Sydney.

The NSW PSSA Team is looking for sponsors. Generally, half the team is made up of young boys from the Riverina Region. In this, the Centenary season of the AFL, the Melbourne Primary Schools Carnival is sure to gain a great deal of attention. If you would like to assist in any way possible please do not hesitate to call either Paul Habel in Griffith on 069 626469 or Chris Gleeson in Wagga on 069 215000.

Mum.,mbidgee Valley Australian Football Assoc. - 'Footy Recorlf'

Much has been said and reportedly said, and just as much has been written about the results of last weekend's Farrer League matches. On the basis of those results one could say quite rightly that there is a huge imbalance in the competition as it stands. The top five teams are clearly better than the bottom five. Last week's round was one in which the "bottoms" played the "tops" and the closest margin was 77 points .. . the difference between Cootamundra and Rivcoll, at Cootamundra. Three of the other four contests had a winning (or losing ... ) margin of 200 points or more, whilst the remaining encounter saw a win by 155 points.

If all matches this season were categorised as (i) "tops" versus "tops"; (ii) "bottoms" versus "bottoms" and (iii) "tops" versus "bottoms" the following statistics come to light. I

In Round One, the one battle of category (i) saw a two point margin; in category (ii) the margin was 113 points in the one match of that type and the three games in category (iii) were won by an average margin of 94 points.

In Round Two, there were two "tops" versus ''tops" games with the average margin being 51 points. Two "bottoms" versus "bottoms" games resulted in wins at an average of 60 points and the one "tops" versus "bottoms" game saw a huge 300 point win.

As mentioned, last weekend saw, in Round

RIVERINA UMPIRES ASSOCIATION

Well, we are now three week into the footy season and already things are starting to fire up with new fiaces every week turning up to training .

It's great to see the younger guys up in the senior ranks keeping the older umpires on their toes pushing for positions.

On the social scene, our first dinner night is on tonight (May 4) at 7.30 pm at the Rules Club, and all umpires and their partners are most welcome to attend.

The first senior umpires dinner for the season is on Thursday, May 16 with a 7.30 pm start.

Three, a complete schedule of ''tops" versus "bottoms" resulting in an average winning margin of 180 points!!! That's thirty goals!!

Over the whole season, the average winning margin of the various categories has been: 35 points in "tops" versus "tops"; 77 points in "bottoms" versus "bottoms" and 165 points in "tops" versus "bottoms".

So, even the disparity between the teams in category (ii) is large enough to think there's an imbalance in the competition .. . let alone the huge average margin of category (iii).

Is there a need to "do something about it''!??! If so ... what can be done?? The answer is "probably nothing this year", as the schedule's been set and most if not all clubs are usually reluctant to change once the season has started. But, surely if the margins, as big as have been had, are to continue in the future, that's not good for either the "winners" or the "losers".

Perhaps, even after Round Four, to-day, it's not too late to change the schedule into two competitions within one, with a "top" meeting a "bottom" only once in six weeks and the other matches between the ''top five" and the "bottom five" . Unconventional ... perhaps, unprecedented, even ... but, perhaps, also, the best for football.

The only other option is to continue as is, with the "bottoms" working hard to improve, so that they can match it with the ''tops". Certainly, it can be done, if the Club folk are willing and if the "wind blows your way" .... but for now, it does seem as though this season could be a "recordbreaking" one for the Farrer league for all the "wrong" reasons!

RULE OF THE WEEK: Law 9.2.2. Playing on over themark from behind the goal/behind line. Amended law: When it is necessary for a defending player, from a free kick or mark, to play the ball from beyond the goal or behind line, the player on the mark shall not be permitted to come within five metres of the goal or behind lines. In such cases, the ball must be played directly over the mark. If there is no player on the mark, the ball may be played in any direction provided it is brought into play over the goal, behind or boundary line originally crossed.

m A disappointing result at Cootamundra last week with both grades of football being defeated by a vastly improved

RED & WHITE Blues outfit. The letdown was STRIPES added to by the players who

failed to appear, and failed to let coaching staff know what their intentions were for the weekend .

Reserve Grade was once again undermanned, and paid the full price, being belted by 163 points. Good players were difficult to find , however Andrew Eamens once again led from the front, gathering many possessions to be clearly the team's best. Steve Dimitrakellis was again a solid contributor, putting in a gutsy performance in defence and in the ruck, while Don Wilson and Wayne Selby were triers in defence.

For Reserve Grade it is time to look at yourself and decide what you want from the season. The same blokes cannot carry you week in, week out. Get to training and put in the work.

First Grade was also disappointing. Cootamundra got away to a flier and we were in no way able to get back into the match. It was good to see that the second half was competitive, however it is no good playing good footy after the game is over as a contest. Four quarter performances are required .

Best for Rivcoll was Captain-Coach Jamie Ross who dominated in the centre of the ground, setting an example that too few followed. Cliff Royle was prominent around the ground and appears to be running himself into some form after a late start to the season, while Clint Maloy was reliable in defence. Other good players were Matthew McKinley, Dom Timothy and Travis Irvin.

Our netballers in contrast to the footy performed extremely well, winning both games comfortably. A Grade remained undefeated with a 4 7-27 victory over Cootamundra. Sally Duncan was brilliant in defence, while Emma Lavis and Melissa Stout were standouts in the midcourt. Cathy McLean continued her good season with a polished performance in goals.

B Grade maintained their position on top of the ladder with a commanding 57-20 victory. Belinda Steen was again creative in the Centre, while Serene Dickens quite appropriately continues to perform well in WA. Heather Lavis was also prominent, finishing off the good work further up the court with another excellent performance in goals.

On Sunday, Sal Duncan, Melissa Stout, Anna Prest, Cathy McLean, Lindsay Clark and Belinda Steen all represented the Farrer League

and did themselves and their club proud . Good to see a lot of support at Bolton Park for the girls to.

Today we meet Ariah Park-Mirrool in a crunch match, and tonight it's P&S Ball time. Let's have some good wins and then get back to the Duke and introduce the first years to our great club officially.

We invite the Brown Bombers back to share in the festivities . I hear a little fella in glasses could be there to hand out cigars, kiss babies and perhaps a few of his old team mates as well. Remember Rule 7b Boris , or just ask Super Row about it.

Till Cliff becomes a selector, Baz dries out , Catia learns to goal umpire and the Bethungra Pub is rebuilt....

Two big wins last week, as well as the players being busy, the goal keepers and scorers were kept flat out at time keeping up with the scores, but they weren't

BROWN complaining and would be happy GREEN TRIM, to keep up the pace any week.

GoLDLETTERING The First Graders had 11 different goal kickers , Glen

Treacy kicked 9, had a top game and won the Bowling Club Award. Sean Nesbitt had a busy game and won the socks, the towel was won by Nat Herdon. The Sports Massage Award went to Mick Heath and the Pewter to Brian Gaynor. Mal Hillier kicked 8 goals and Richard Gleeson 5.

The Reserve Graders set up their good win with four consistent quarters. Jason Bryce kicked 9 goals and won the Bowling Club Award, Chris Cassidy also scored 9 and won the Towel, the socks were won by Gavin Leiper and Ariah Park Sales & Service Award went to Chris Chalmers.

The netball girls also had a good day, the B Graders won a very even game 26-22 with the award going to Vicki Leiper. The A Grade had a good win 57-13, Angela Edis playing well and winning that Award and the Towel was won by Gillian McLean. A big thank you to the Ardlethan Netball Club for bringing their C Grade and Under 14's teams and playing a game against our girls. It was much appreciated and enjoyed by all.

Congratulations to Alan Bell who is playing his 200th First Grade game for our club today -these achievements are what keep the team spirit in the Bombers Club. A big thank you to the players for their efforts in finding the ir sponsors for 1996. It has been a very successful venture and we hope everyone will support these sponsors throughout the year.

Today we take on Rivcoll and would like to see all players make every kick a winner.

A far better day was had by all and sundry last Saturday at the Airforce Base, with the Stars making a clean sweep of both the football and the netball. A big reminder to everyone - keep the night of Saturday 1st June free

GOLD for another Super Stars RED sHouwrns Extravaganza - Yeh Yeh It's

Saturday, live at the Memorial Hall. A mailbox will operate for entry into competitions that will be held and also for a Media Watch segment (all tidbits and mistakes etc are most welcome - no doubt the DA and OH, RI and friends will feature prominently). More details next week.

The Mighty Magoos overcame an "interesting" start to record a well deserved victory, running all over their opponents quicker than a Jehovah's Witness through an open door. Votegetters in the Bowling Club Award were (5) Stewart Litchfield -who, like a good .

red, just gets better and better with age (4) Glen "Champ" Ingram - who played a blinder in his first game of the year, (3) David "Rowdy'' Derksen - who did well to double up in the ones, (2) Bruce "Mr. Colgate" Boyton and ( 1) Keith "The Flying Doormat'' Menzies. The Chinese Meal went to Brett Noble after another inspirational performance and the Mug to Stewart Litchfield.

The First Graders recorded a Federal Election style victory by absolutely blitzing a shellshocked opposition. Votegetters in the Rod Mac Award were (5) Mark Whyte - who got almost as many possessions out of the middle than Gary Forde did chasing the ball behind the goals, (4) Matthew Werner - who was tighter in defence than a constipated Scotsman, (3) Kieran Spencer - who was again busier than one of Finleys dogs looking for their beloved red ute, (2) Brendan "Kick a lazy dozen" O'Rielly, (1) Craig "Have a bounce, stop and pick it up, Have a Bounce" Saunderson. The Smokey Gray Hair Award (from Denise's) went to Brendan O'Rielly and the Mug to Craig "The Real Mug" Saunderson.

The netballers also had another great day out with the A Graders winning 63 to 27, with Briony Spencer taking out the Consistency Award and Suzanne Lucas the Mug. B Grade also continued their winning form with a solid 50 to 14 victory. Katrina Saunderson took out the consistency award (must be Craig's good cooking?) and Jenny Trembath the Mug. Keep those wins rolling in girls.

Last Saturday was probably one we'd rather forget!! It's some time since neither our Seniors nor Reserves had been goal-less at half-time .... a situation that had our coaches confounded!! The story

RED. didn't get any better for our Twos, BLACK sHouLDERs whilst the Seniors found the "big

opening" only three times, and that was all in the one quarter, the third , from the boots of two of our smallest players, Glenn Currie (2) and Jason Dash. Well. .. that takes care of the goalkickers for the day.

Best player awards went as follows: Seniors: The Mug to captain-coach , David Pocock; the Bistro 2000 Dinner to Billy "Lid" McMullen; the Thomas Blarney Dinner to Travis Terry; the Flexit Prize to Shaun Carey; the Wagga Squash Centre award to Darren Hoare and the "Choccies" to Guy Palframan. The Ca$h incentive awards were won by Neil Morton ($50) , Ross Combs ($30) and Russell Hillier ($20) .

In the Reserves , "Pencil" Robinson won The Mug for being the saviour on the last line of defence ... a job that two or three other veterans wanted but were not allowed ... the Bistro 2000 Dinner went to Graham Cheney (hope you made the wedding "Chenes"), the Thomas Blarney Dinner to Robbie "Rabbit" Carroll , the Flex-it award to Rod Bruce, the Wagga Squash Centre prize to Col Lynch and the Chocolates to Shane Frearson.

On a brighter note the Netball girls were successful in both the 'A's and the

'B' s, winning quite handsomely in the two matches and apparently showing a "bit of spirit" that coaches David and Ross would have liked on the footy field!!

Awards went to Kylie Mackinnon (Mug) and Nicole Vonarx (Chocolates) in the 'A's and to Vanessa Stanmore (Mug) and Debbie Hillier and Ria Palframan (each a box of chocolates) in the 'B's. A special presentation was made to Jan Florey, who is leaving us, in recognition of her contribution to the Dons Netballers.

On Sunday our Juniors again had a 50-50 day, with big wins to the Under 1 Os coached by Peter Taylor and Under 12s coached by Tim Bourke. Not so fortunate were our Under 14s and Under 16s coached by Darryl Hillier and "Jock" Currie . Between them they scored as many goals as the Firsts and Seconds. So, whilst our immediate future doesn't look bright, our more distant future holds promise of better things in years to come.

To-day is a big opportunity to post our first Senior win, and double our return in the Twos, when we play RAAF. Let's not just hope for it...let's do it!!!!

Our Rosella Reserves need not be embarrassed by their loss to Marrar last Saturday as they were short a few of their regular players and did well under the

GREEN, RED v circumstances. Our Rosella One's also had two of their regular

players out but that certainly does not cancel out the huge loss they suffered at the hands of the Marrar Seniors. Marrar are the League leaders and deserve to be. To match that standard we must improve our running play and be prepared to run, use quick hands and dispose of the ball correctly and consistently. We have now seen and tasted the standard required, it's now up to us.

Having said that, I believe the time has come for the MVAFA to have a good look at the competition structure of clubs and do something about the problem in conjunction with the NSWFL. Maybe we should be thinking again of Farrer 2 or maybe call it by another name? We must remember that all clubs do not have the money to pay players but are certainly there to provide the outlet for non-paid players to have a go. And that's what they want to do - have a go. Enough of that or I may get my fingers burnt.

All of our senior team tried their hardest last Saturday but were outclassed. Best for our One's were : Gary Ryan at fullback and was in the game all day; Kieren Hynes, Darren McDonald, Mick Irwin and Craig Byrnes, well done fella's and also to all others for trying and doing your best.

Best for the Two's were: Gary Gardner (again); Andy Brunton (a welcome return); Terry Berule, Mick Ploengers (first game), Brett Irwin and Jim Pearce. Well done.

This week The Rock at our place. We meet them after their big win last Saturday. They will be looking tor percentage points and lots of them. We must play the game skilfully and hard and put a stop to the rot that is going on, whereby the ex-Farrer One sides are dishing out hidings. It can be done and must be done. We must remember the season has a long way to go and we must put in. We welcome The Rock-Yerong Creek boys back to the Sporties Club after the game and then we must be away to the Uranquinty Pub to see John Perkins and have a few quiet ones.

The Rock may wish to join us there too. A final commercial for our "Decade Dinner". It will only cost $1 O per head and promises to be an excellent night. Anyone may attend, all are welcome. Regard today's games, DON'T BACK DOWN and DON'T GIVE UP.

significantly.

Another two victories last week and at present things are rolling along like the Mississippi. Last week's round of matches wasn't what the handicapper wanted and it is hoped that sometime in the near future the gap from the bottom to the top decreases

Smokeys Seconds started the day more impressively than a Grace Bros stocktake sale and although allowing the opposition to score, recorded an overwhelming victory. Award winners were: Libbys Takeaway Mug - Dave Legettie, The Porky and Verdy Mug -Big Dick Flanigan, The Ladies Auxiliary $1 O each to - Mark Bauer and Justin Poole, the K.O.H, Dinner for 2 - Brad Merrills.

Braineys Bunch (minus Brainey) then took the field and inflicted much the same damage as the magoos. Although it was a big win it was nothing to get a false feeling about as there is a fair bit stiffer opposition down the track. Award winners were: The Rock Butchery Mug - Lewis Winter - who has contracted iron poisoning . The R.A.F.C. Award went to Shane Brown. The Riverina Spraying Service Towel went to Darren "Swoop" Burkinshaw, The Thomas Blarney Voucher to Paul Noack and the K.O.H. Dinner for 2 to Scott Brown. The Amateur Awards went to Darren Burkinshaw $50, $30 to Kev Driscoll and $20 to Dave Carroll.

Netball News - Not a real success but a definite improvement is evident. A Grade lost 43-27 with Kym Sonneman winning the Mug. B Grade lost 4 7-16 with Tammy Cusack winning the Mug.

Players are reminded of their memberships. If you have a sponsor see them and fix the Club up. If you can't find a sponsor - fix up the Club yourself.

Another reminder that if anyone wants a Rugby Top see Dominique. A minimum of 20 to be ordered and they close in two weeks.

Coming up on the weekend of June 1st we are staging our Ten Year Reunion Grand Final. This will be a tremendous weekend culminating with a Reunion Ball on the Saturday night at The Rock Masonic Hall. A dinner is to be served and bar open. A luncheon will also be served to all participating players in that 1986 team on the Saturday. Keep this weekend free for a great time

Today we meet Uranquinty-Kapooka at Bunker Hill. Don 't let complacency creep into our game After sampling their hospitality we 'll see you at The Home.

A couple of these were: 1. The spirit shown by both grades and the

never, say die attitude and will to play the game right to the end.

2. Junee once again put 2 teams on the paddock on a long trip on a Sunday - well done boys.

Thanks to all who helped and especially Dave Hedlund and Terry Bourke who backed up for 1st grade. They showed real team spirit and demonstrated what's required to make us successful.

The Social/Fundraising committee has some big nights planned commencing with the Trivia Night tonight - which should be a load of fun and the Golf Day on the June long weekend, keep the Golf Day in mind and get along and join in. All money raised at these events goes to YOUR club.

The committee welcome any suggestions that supporters may have and would appreciate even more, offers to help because a heavy load if it is shared becomes a light load. So join in and help.

Today we play Marrar - so lets all get in and support our club and give Marrara contest that they will remember.
