West Haddon Parish Council – Letter from the Chair As the country gradually returns to some form of new order, I will not say new normal because it is far from normal, I cast my mind back to what seems like a long time ago now but was only a few months past, when the village was eerily quiet with no traffic and very few people walking around. I am not sure that many of us then realised the impact in terms of length of restrictions, the economic effects on the country, the toll on our children’s education, jobs, socialising, families, friendships etc. Of course, some people will have also felt the full force of the virus either through suffering the symptoms, some of which we are still learning about and the long-term effects, to losing loved ones during this time. As we are ever reminded though, the virus is still with us and just as dangerous, so I urge people to stay safe and to be alert. As our children now, hopefully, look forward to returning to school in the next few days, and will face new ways of dealing with every day life at school with social distancing and bubbles, I would like to acknowledge all you have done as parents, carers, and grandparents, to keep our children amused during this very lengthy time – it has been trying at times I know with a lack of outlets for them to participate in. Nevertheless, many West Haddon clubs and organisations have been resuming activities and I would like to pay tribute in particular to the sports clubs and teams who have carried out meticulous risk assessments, planning and through very careful management have been able to resume some sporting activities for the benefit of children (and their parents), and adults alike.

Unfortunately, the pavilion remains closed at present as the Government restrictions do not allow for the use of changing rooms and showers at this time and the requirements to allow access to a Covid secure and safe multi user public facility is beyond the Council’s current capacity, but it is under constant review. I would ask though, that as the clubs work carefully to manage the resumption of sports that those exercising their dogs on the playing fields remember to pick up mess after their four legged friends and to keep them on leads when sporting activities are taking place. A dog being patted by children in one bubble, before going on to the next bubble of children for attention, is a high risk – also, some children are scared of dogs. Continues overleaf…

Whether it is the lighter nights or the effects of the economic issues being faced across the country, I have received reports that there has been an increase in ‘cold calling’ salespeople in the village. Whilst some people are happy to accept these please be vigilant and only open the door if you are happy to do so, do not invite people that you do not know into your home, and do not feel pressured into purchasing anything or signing up for any deals – they could be a scam. Please cut out the sign on the back of this newsletter and place in a prominent position by your front door if you are not happy to receive cold callers. And finally, I would like to thank all of the businesses in our community who have adapted and accommodated to the needs of our village swiftly throughout this crisis – I am sure I speak for us all when I say we are lucky to live in a village with facilities and we need, now more than ever, to support those services some of which are only just able to resume activity. S Kerr Chair of the Parish Council.

COVID SAFETY & WEST HADDON FACILITIES

Just a reminder that, whilst the outdoor play area and outdoor gym equipment is available for use, we politely remind users to respect and abide by the rules on the signs affixed around the area. The Council does not have the capability to monitor the area or carry out continuous cleaning, so users use it at their own risk. If you intend to use the equipment please socially distance yourself from others and use hand sanitisers before and after use. The Council is looking at affixing better signage in the area for your safety and information. Thank you on behalf of West Haddon Parish Council

Waste Collection for September 2020

Daventry District Council is working with Daventry Norse to makes some changes to waste and recycling collection patterns from the week beginning 31st August.

The changes will simplify the rounds and make services more resilient to pressures such as those currently being experienced as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Your bin day and the service you receive will not change, but collection patterns will be altered in some areas once the changes are introduced. These changes will come into effect in the week beginning Monday

The Donations Box and The Food Bank

There continues to be in the church porch a box to receive gifts of food, toiletries and

other items which you are able to give for those in need. It is there also for those who are in need to take from it. Please do not hesitate to take the tins of food, bottles of shampoo or tubes of toothpaste for your own use. Items that remain we will take to the Food Bank in Rugby where there is a great need for all that remains.

Wheelchairs for all It was in the 1930s that a group of villages, including West Haddon, set up the Yelvertoft and District Nursing Association. Subscriptions were collected from the villages involved to pay for a nurse who would visit and look after the sick. A house was bought for her. When the National Health Service was set up after the Second World War, the nurse became the District Nurse, continuing to live in 1 West End. She moved eventually further down West End and Number 1 was sold. The proceeds from this sale were invested and this is where the money for the present Yelvertoft and District Relief in Sickness Fund comes from. Items of equipment have been purchased and these can be borrowed by those who need them. Grants may be made towards specific pieces of equipment and there is money available to help with hospital visiting or special needs arising from sickness. Those who use the chiropody service receive a subsidy of £5 a visit.

WEST HADDON VILLAGE HALL After lots of risk assessing, organization and paperwork we are thrilled to

announce that the Village Hall is now open. For all enquiries, please contact the Bookings Secretary on [email protected] or phone/text

07771 968878 .

The AGM will be on Tuesday 22nd September at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. We will also run the meeting on Zoom. Please contact the Secretary on [email protected] if you would like the Zoom joining details.

We are still hoping that relocation of the telegraph pole outside the village hall will be carried out in the school holidays. New tarmac and marking out of parking bays will likely be delayed until the autumn.

Our new website is under construction and we should start testing in the next couple of weeks. Once the website is live, it will be possible to check the calendar on-line and send an enquiry direct to the Bookings Secretary.

West Haddon Junior Football were recently successful in applying for a grant of £2,500 for pitch improvement from The FA. We consulted our mowing contractor, R & G Groundworks and have spent the money on top-dressing. 80 tonnes of a sand/topsoil mixture were purchased from British Sugar.

The topsoil being a by-product for British Sugar, having been shaken and washed off the sugar beet delivered to it from its supply chain farmers. For more information https://www.bstopsoil.co.uk/about us/how - is - topsoil - produced

The land on which the Atterbury/Field Close development was built in the early 1960s had belonged to the Atterbury family, but who built it? There was a builder in the village around that time called Harry Field. Harry had been born in London but by 1918 was living with his family in West Haddon. In 1926, then a young bricklayer, Harry married Dorothy Matilda Cowley and they had three children, the youngest of whom they called Marcia Matilda.

After an interlude in Derbyshire, where he

worked as a brickworks manager, by the 1950s Harry was back in West Haddon, making a living as a small property developer, buying up individual properties and modernising them before selling them on. Older villagers once joked that there wasn’t a house in West Haddon that Harry hadn’t lived in! In 1954 he was living at Oak House in West End when he bought the old farmhouse and stable block belonging to Church Farm. He demolished the stables, which in 1947 had housed the horse that had carried Nurse Muncaster to a new mother in the terrible February snow of that year. He built a new house on the site. But during the post-war shortages it was difficult to get bricks, which is why this house is built of a pale brick not seen anywhere else in the village. In 1969, this was the house that Head Teacher E W Lattimore retired to. Without the farm, the farmhouse became known as Church House, and it was from this house that Marcia Matilda walked to church in 1955 to marry G E C Williams. She later became famous as Marcia Williams, Private Secretary to Harold Wilson, who later sent her to the House of Lords, as Baroness Falkender. When her mother died in 1978, the former Prime Minister accompanied her to the funeral in All Saints Church. Interested in village history? Try the Facebook group: Old Photos of West Haddon.
