The first section is the Horse Worksection, where the rider must do a working pattern, open/shut gates, back through obstacles, side pass over a log, jump the log and carry a coat over a tarp, etc. It is judged out of a total of 100 points for horse work. The second section is Dog Workwhere horse, rider and dog must work approximately 16 sheep around a set course. Each obstacle is worth 10 points. With only a week out from the event, I gave him a crash course in mustering sheep which he finally got the hang of and realised they werent so scary after all. He actually drove them along quietly at a walk something racehorses find hard to do relax and walk and not to mention, opening gates. When Aaron and I arrived we were asked to lead the street parade in the morning. I was a little nervous this could turn into the Melbourne Cup down the straight! However besides prancing all the way down, chomping on the bit, my imitationstock horse, with hogged mane (in an attempt to look the part), handled it quite well considering he had a marching band playing at top note coming up his rear. After the parade finished we headed over to walk the course. Aaron was 2 nd ride out on his 3yo ASH Condover Lynx and his 3yo Kelpie Finchams Pup. He did a good job but when the sheep came to the race, they didnt want to co-operate and cost Aaron a lot of time penalties and obstacle points. Then it was my turn. I had butterflies battering my stomach so I had a quiet word with Brego to behave and pretend to be a Stock Horse! And it worked. He went out and did a super job scoring a massive 92 points for his effort. Page 2 Kath’s Success at the Casterton Kelpie Muster

Every year on the long weekend on June, the little country town of Casterton

holds its annual “Casterton Kelpie Muster” where thousands of people flock from

all over Australia to watch Kelpies compete in events. The famous Working

Dog Auction is also a major draw card and gives the serious working dog owner

the opportunity to mix business with novelty events – all celebrating Working

Dogs.

The Challenge event consists of two parts. The first section is the “Horse Work”

section, where the rider must do a working pattern, open/shut gates, back through

obstacles, side pass over a log, jump the log and carry a coat over a tarp, etc. It is

judged out of a total of 100 points for horse work.

The second section is “Dog Work” where horse, rider and dog must work

approximately 16 sheep around a set course. Each obstacle is worth 10 points.

Then the mob is worked through a sheep- race down into a holding yard where

the rider dismounts and continues to draft the sheep in the yard with your dog

until they are all put away.

I was lucky enough this year to be invited to compete. I was so excited but then

realised I didn’t have a Stock Horse to ride as mine are all currently in foal or

unbroken or just green broken.

I only had my “off the rack” Thoroughbred, Brego, who I have just started

eventing. With only a week out from the event, I gave him a crash course in

mustering sheep which he finally got the hang of and realised they weren’t so

scary after all. He actually drove them along quietly at a walk – something

racehorses find hard to do – relax and walk and not to mention, opening gates.

When Aaron and I arrived we were asked to lead the street parade in the morning.

I was a little nervous this could turn into the Melbourne Cup down the straight!

However besides prancing all the way down, chomping on the bit, my “imitation”

stock horse, with hogged mane (in an attempt to look the part), handled it quite

well considering he had a marching band playing at top note coming up his rear.

After the parade finished we headed over to walk the course. Aaron was 2nd ride

out on his 3yo ASH Condover Lynx and his 3yo Kelpie Finchams Pup. He did

a good job but when the sheep came to the race, they didn’t want to co-operate

and cost Aaron a lot of time penalties and obstacle points.

Then it was my turn. I had butterflies battering my stomach so I had a quiet word

with Brego to behave and pretend to be a Stock Horse! And it worked. He went

out and did a super job scoring a massive 92 points for his effort.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Hello members,

Firstly let me thank the outgoing committee on doing an exceptional job in running the Branch for the past three

years. John & Fiona Glover have done a great job making sure our training days, Hack Challenge, team penning and

other enjoyable training days at Cannibal Creek were implemented. The use of their own property as well as John

supplying cattle for the training days was very much appreciated by all who attended.

Fiona’s newsletters and management of our website were instrumental in the Branch winning the National Branch of

the year last year. After just missing out the previous year. The directors were amazed at how busy our branch was

with all of our training days as well as our annual Show and Challenge and annual Campdraft and Challenge. Not to

mention the Hack Challenge and fund raising activities.

To Karen Turner, thank you for 14 years of service to the Branch in the role of secretary. You have been nominated

and awarded the National Volunteer of the Year award. We at the Branch are very proud of your efforts and the fact

that your efforts have been recognised at the highest level. We look forward to your award at the National AGM in

Melbourne.

Two other stalwarts of the Branch will also be honoured at the AGM in Melbourne. They are Aub Goodman and

Graeme Cook who were part of the original branch members. They will be honoured with State Service Awards after

contributing 40 years of promoting and being active members of our Branch. Both breed horses and both have won

some very big events in the show ring and campdraft arenas. Congratulations to both of you and we are very proud of

your ongoing commitment to our branch.

We will strive to continue our training days at Cannibal Creek as well as our show and campdraft and maybe a couple

of big new items. More on that in months to come. Our meetings will continue to be held on the 3rd Thursday night of

each month starting on 21st June at Newmasons in Warragul starting at 6.00pm for a meal and 7pm for the meeting.

We look forward to seeing lots of new faces getting involved in the Branch as the branch is only as active and as

strong as our members want it to be. We will be forming a show committee and a campdraft committee as well as

Hack Challenge committee and for the first time a Super Horse committee. Please come along and put your hand up

to help run the events you are interested in.

Congratulations to the new committee members who have taken up the reins to keep our branch active and

welcoming to any new and existing members who wish to contribute to the success of our branch activities. Let’s

create a very enjoyable and fun culture which always leads to a successful result.

Riding horses is very simple “Keep a leg on each side and your mind in the middle”.

Regards

Larry Cutler

I unclipped my Kelpie Boss who did an incredible job controlling the sheep despite his “mother” giving him

the wrong commands every now and then because of her nerves.

We back to the float to celebrate with a beer or two and finally relax. I was a super proud mum of my two

boys. The next minute I heard my name called over the loud speaker – I had made the top 5 going into the

finals! Wow!

So, remounted, I went in again. Boss was a star and worked his amazing Kelpie intelligence controlling

very touchy sheep. In the end we moved up from 5th place to finish 4th overall.

Time for the Presentations. The biggest surprise came when they awarded Brego and me 1st place for the

overall Horse Work section. We received gorgeous embroidered Stock Horse reins, a cheque, trophy,

Horse Wormer and a bag of dog food. I was blown away.

My two beautiful children, Brego and Boss deserve all the credit. I’m a proud mum.

AGM at CRANBOURNE TURF CLUB

Members of the West Gippsland ASH Branch celebrated a very successful year at their recent AGM. This was

held at the Cranbourne Racecourse. A scrumptious meal was enjoyed whilst being entertained by rolling photo

images from our past year and also the evening race meeting. I don’t think too many of us were successful

punters, perhaps we should stick to our mighty Australian Stock Horses rather than our speedy thoroughbreds!

The branch has had a very successful year. Although our annual campdraft was cancelled due to inclement

weather, it was rescheduled and included on our Branch Show and Challenge weekend! Many of our members

volunteered time to help the smooth running of the show. A huge weekend but a very successful one. The annual

Hack Challenge was also held and drew in a number of keen entries considering the cold, wet weather. Activity

days held at Cannibal Creek Reserve have included a cattle working, obstacle course day and polocrosse fun.

We farewelled a fantastic, hard working committee led by John Glover and Secretary Karen Wilson. Karen has

been a tireless worker for our branch for many years as secretary, show secretary and activity day coordinator.

She has been rewarded with receiving the National Volunteer Award. Clancy Batty also received an award for his

services to our branch.

WILLINGA PARK

World Championship Gold Buckle Campdraft Willinga Park is a leading horse breeding and training facility on the New South Wales south coast owned by Mr

Terry Snow, a campdrafter and breeder of Australian Stock Horses. In April this year the Willinga Park inaugural

World Championship Gold Buckle event was held, a weekend enjoyed by competitor and spectator alike.

The $225,000 worth of prize money is a figure not seen before in horse sports outside racing, great lure for

campdrafters far and wide. A number of West Gippsland members went along to compete and to spectate. This

included Mat and Tristan Holz, David White, Charlie and Ian Hengstberger, Colin Stockdale and Carol Tonkin.

Unfortunately that prize money didn’t venture south! In Ian’s words, it was a fantastic weekend, a tough course,

amazing set up, terrific venue and wonderful to see a man with Terry Snow’s wealth and vision complete such a

brilliant concept.

The venue incorporates a Grand Prix dressage arena, botanic gardens, covered arenas, competitor stables and the

state of the art campdraft facility.

Congratulations go to Peter Comisky on his horse Paris. Peter travelled over twenty hours to the event, from central

Queensland.

Let’s hope more West Gippslanders head north for the challenge next year!

REMINDER The ASHS Annual General Meeting is in Melbourne

this year.

9.30 am registration, meeting begins at 10.00 See page 7 of latest journal for details and Buffet dinner tickets.

COMMUNICATION!!!

It was moved at the last committee meeting, to obtain/ purchase a mobile phone and pre-paid sim card to send SMS messages to all members to help with communication, as not all members have Facebook and email access. This will allow the committee to give real-time reminders for upcoming committee meetings, events, call outs for volunteers/ helpers, quick surveys to see if people are interested for an event to be held and when weather conditions may look to be unfavourable on the day of an event, a text can be sent to all to inform if the event is going ahead or cancelled. This will help our committee to contact all members with a single message in a quick and efficient way, and also a number that members can contact - knowing that the phone is in possession of a current committee member. Once all numbers are imputed onto a phone, a test message will be sent, it would be appreciated if you would be able to reply with the name/ company name that the membership is under and the person whose phone we have the contact details for, this will allow us to confirm that we have details correct. It would be appreciated that once you receive this message that if you are speaking to another member to see if they have also received the test message. If they haven’t received the message ask them to contact Sally Fay/ Jennifer Emanuel to have their details updated. This will take a little time to organise and get working, but we believe this will help a great deal. Thanks Michelle Gillham for your input here.
