CODE OF CONDUCTCITIZENSHIP Student-participants need to keep in perspective their role as active
members in the co-curricular program. It is important for them to be good role

admire and are influenced by their actions. Participants need to demonstrate proper
respect to all persons, property and the law on and off school premises.
As a student participating in co-curricular activities at West Fargo Public Schools, I
understand and accept the following responsibilities:
I will respect the rights and beliefs of others and will treat others with courtesy and
consideration.
I will be fully responsible for my own actions and the consequences of my actions.
I will respect the property of others.
I will respect and obey the rules of my school and the laws of my community, state and
country.
I will show respect to those who are responsible for enforcing the rules of my school
and the laws of my community, state and country.

PARENT-COACH COMMUNICATION GUIDELINES PURPLE FORM (KEEP)
GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE
In any activities program, problems can arise. In
many cases these problems are simply due to
poor communication. In other situations the
problem may be more serious.
Communication is critical in the fostering of a
quality experience for our student/athletes.
For these reasons it is necessary to follow the
proper chain of command.
These guidelines do not include concerns about
the mental, physical, or emotional well-being of
the student. If a parent has a concern about any
of those areas, please contact the Activities
Director immediately.
GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE
Step 1: Player/Participant direct contact with the Coach/Director
Step 2: Parent direct contact with the Coach/Director after a minimum of 24 hours have elapsed
Step 3: Parents direct contact with the Activities Director
Step 4: Parents direct contact with the High School Principal
Step 5: Parents submit a written complaint to the Superintendent; a proposed solution must accompany the complaint.
Step 6: Complaints that are unresolved at the Superintendent level, may be brought before the school board by notifying the Board in writing.
GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE
• Coaches and student athletes will be informed
whenever the activities director is contacted
regarding their program. (email, phone call,
face to face)
Anonymous complaints will not be recognized.
Students will be included in any and all meetings
with coaches and the activities director.
Please allow 24 hours after any game or contest
before starting any grievance procedure.

Goals vs. Purpose
Great Conversation Topic with your Child
What are your child's goals?
If they are different than your
goals, then you need to
change your goals. This
experience is your child's.
Sports•man•ship: n. fair play; the ability to win or lose graciously,
abide by the rules and a code of fair play, either in games or in daily practice and life
Sportsmanship
Positive cheers are intended to encourage your school and your team. Cheers that are disparaging to your opponents will not be permitted. In addition, cheers that identify individual opponents or team are not permitted (e.g. multiple “air ball” cheers, scoreboard cheers, etc.)
The school spirit cheer (“We got spirit, yes we do, we got spirit, how about you?”) will end with “We got more”
Flags are not permitted in the two rows closest to the court because of safety. If student fans want to have a dress up theme then approval needs to be secured prior
to the event. Administration will approve all dress up themes. “Props” will not be permitted (e.g. newspapers, whiteboards) although posters/cut
outs are ok if they promote your team.
Sportsmanship
• Respect the American flag and the National Anthem.• Schools are encouraged to have an authorized faculty representative present who shall
be responsible for his/her school’s participants, students, & fans throughout the contest.• Spectators must wear clothing that covers the entire torso. Those who do not comply or
who wear clothing that is vulgar, obscene or that in some other way inappropriate, asdetermined by school/tournament personnel, will be removed from the facility if they do notcooperate with this behavior expectation.
• The use of appropriate language is expected at all times. Profanity, negative chants, trashtalk, name-calling, personal attacks or other acts of disrespect are unacceptable and mustbe immediately addressed by school/tournament administrators.
• Any attendee ejected from a NDHSAA tournament venue will be banned from the venue(s)for the remainder of the event.
• Respect the game/contest. Under no condition shall anyone other than the members of theofficial squad enter the playing surface. No one may interfere with the contest in any way.
Sportsmanship
• Hand held signs and flags, which do not obstruct the view of others, are permitted providedthey are in good taste. Signs or other similar items contest/tournament officials deem to bein poor taste will be removed. Message or “white” boards are prohibited. The carrying offlags around the playing surface is NOT allowed.
• Artificial noisemakers of any kind (i.e. megaphones, cowbells, sirens, whistles, thundersticks, and other similar items) are not allowed at any indoor events, including outdoorsports played at indoor venues. Exception – Megaphones appropriately used bycheerleaders are permitted if allowed by contest officials.
• Laser lights or any other lights deemed distracting to participants are strictly prohibited.• Confetti is banned at all NDHSAA tournament venues. Tournament staff is instructed to
confiscate such articles at the door.• Objects shall not be thrown into the stands at any NDHSAA tournament venue.• The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), also known as drones, is prohibited for any
person at NDHSAA tournement venues.

Mistreating and yelling at referees
can hurt your team a number of
ways.
CREATE A POSITIVE COMPETITIVE
ENVIRONMENT
Get Calls Against You
If you constantly badger referees, some will sub-concisely start making calls against you.
Bad Team Play
Players often copy their parent’s and coach's actions. If you are mistreating the referees, the players probably will too. This will lead to your players getting on the bad side of the referees which will never help as the game progresses.
Misplaced Blame
When players are allowed to blame the officials rather than taking responsibility for poor play, this can lead to a negative mind set for the whole team.
Some may argue that yelling at officials can get you some calls, but isn’t this setting a bad example for our youth, players and fans?
Mistreating and yelling at referees can
hurt your team…
yelling at officials is not performance enhancing; it reinforces an improper response to a tough situation.
If the adults lose their cool, they are demonstrating their inability to perform in a difficult situation.
Dealing with questionable calls is a teaching opportunity and one of the prime lessons of sport.
We must model for kids how to handle disagreements and incorrect calls.
Bad calls happen. We all know that.
