Music. Movies. Magic. You’ve likely noticed a lot of great buzz in the media about happenings at The Shops at West End. We’ve been busy partnering to bring you some of the area’s hottest events. The shopping center is proud to play host to some major concerts, festivals and shows this summer and fall.

On Saturday, Aug. 20, The Shops at West End will echo with the sounds of fantastic Minnesota-grown bands at our “Rockin’ for Music Ed” block party, a benefit for music education in middle and high schools. The event offers live music, an art fair, concessions from Shops at West End restaurants, games and contests, a large prize raffle and interactive exhibits. Details can be found inside on pages 12-15.

This fall, The Shops at West End is a presenting a sponsor of the Twin Cities Film Fest. The annual mainstream six-day film festival provides audiences access to the best films the global industry has to offer; stimulates economic activity in the Twin Cities; and offers filmmakers a premiere venue at which to debut their work. The festival runs Sept. 20 through 25 and will be hosted exclusively at The Shops at West End’s ShowPlace Icon Theatre.

Also this fall, the magic of Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Human and Horse gallops to the northeast corner of The Shops at West End property. Cavalia enchants audiences with its grand-scale show featuring 39 human performers and 45 horses from around the world. The production is a fresh mix of equestrian and performing arts, multimedia and special effects. Under the largest big top on earth, the horses express themselves in all their splendor, nobility and strength – often completely free of reins. Cavalia opens September 21.

Feeling lucky? Don’t forget to enter our “Go West. Get Away.” trip giveaway promotion – you could win trips to San Francisco, Dallas, Boston, Vancouver and Duluth, as well as a Shops at West End prize package. The promotional brochure, which can be picked up in the theatre atrium, also includes discount offers to many Shops at West End restaurants and merchants. The promotion ends August 31, 2011.

We want to hear your Shops at West End story. Have you had fun at West End events in the past year? Did you find your “new image” at our fashion stores? Did you celebrate a special event at one of our restaurants? Planning to attend our block party or Cavalia? Let us know about it in 250 words or less. Email your West End story to us at [email protected]. The top three stories will win gift cards and be included in a future issue of West End Compass.

Here’s to your next magical experience at The Shops at West End!

Meet Jeremy Swanson Franchisee/Owner, Verizon Wireless

With over 10 years working in wireless service, Jeremy Swanson recently opened his Verizon Wireless store at The Shops at West End. “My years of experience as a sales representative and as a manager have helped me to get where I am today,” said Jeremy.

Jeremy’s upbeat personality and positive attitude is an inspiration to his employees. When you walk in

the door you are greeted by his friendly staff. It is his goal to hire the most helpful, ethical and honest people he can – it shows in his team.

Jeremy is on a first-name basis with many of his customers and wants them all to be considered friends. “It is our goal to provide the best service possible and to treat every

customer like we do our family,” he said. “That’s what keeps them coming back!”

Recently Jeremy won his second “Verizon Rock Star” award from Verizon Corporation. While this is

very fitting as Jeremy is also a talented musician, he won this award for his excellence in sales and marketing at his store.

Jeremy is very proud of the offerings in his store. He’s happy that they offer such a wide variety of phones and accessories

from Motorolla, Samsung, Blackberry, Apple and more. His favorites are the new line of smart phones.

When Jeremy has time away from his store, he spends it with his family. He has a wife and two

children who keep him busy. He enjoys fishing and hunting, but his true passion is playing bass guitar during services at his church in Coon Rapids.

Find Jeremy at Verizon Wireless, 5334 16th St.

Meet Amy Briesemeister Owner, Pink Champagne

Amy Briesemeister loves fashion. She also loves helping people tap into their own sense of style. As a fashion model living in Barcelona, she learned the “ins and outs” of the industry. When she moved back to the United States she wanted to somehow stay connected to fashion. A friend opened a boutique clothing store on the West Coast which in turn got Amy thinking about the need for a similar type store in Minnesota; it all just made perfect sense.

After a year of planning, Amy opened Pink Champagne on Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis. After stints in Minneapolis and Orono, she found the ideal place, The Shops at West End. “I did a lot of research and found that boutique-style shopping centers were the new thing” she said.

To Amy, it’s not about how much money people spend in her store, it’s about their experience. She wants everyone to wear clothes they feel great in. “My customers are my friends and I want to help be the guide into their own fashion journey – on whatever level that may be,” says Amy. “It’s about helping them find their own personal style.”

When shopping at a boutique, Amy’s advice is to not look at size. If it fits, size has nothing to do with it. However, if customers don’t find what they want in the store, she is more than happy to special order their perfect little something.

Pink Champagne offers something for every- one, women and men alike. For more details, “like” Pink Champagne on Facebook.

Find Amy at Pink Champagne, 1645 Park Place Blvd.

Meet our merchants“Meet our merchants” is a regular feature of West End Compass that introduces you to owners and/or managers of stores and restaurants at The Shops at West End. Stop in and say hello to merchant managers – they’re available to help you personalize your shopping experience.

DiD YOU KnOW? Verizon carries the largest selection of the latest, most powerful smart

phones. Four new models were launched in July. The Shops at West End Verizon store offers better

equipment pricing than other local stores because they match Verizon’s online pricing (which can vary by up to $80). Plus, the Shops at West End location does not charge extra fees for upgrading and transferring information from one phone to another like many other cellular stores do.

DiD YOU KnOW? Pink Champagne carries the popular “My Blankee” line.

These blankets and robes are amazingly plush and machine washable. Blankets even come in king size. Choose from stock blankets in the store, or have one custom-made from hundreds of fabric

options. True story: one mother recently requested a replacement Blankee for her child of the same material

and style, as it’s the only way her daughter will go to sleep at night.

You don’t have to go to a museum to enjoy some wonderful public art—just head to The Shops at West End, where art truly is everywhere. Whether you’re gazing at the center’s public art, shopping for jewelry from an artisan or admiring the décor at your favorite restaurant, West End offers something for every taste.

One-of-a-kind public art is found at West End thanks to the City of St. Louis Park’s collaboration with FORECAST Public Artworks and developer Duke Realty. A committee made up of residents, representatives from the City of St. Louis Park’s Parks & Recreation advisory committee and St. Louis Park Friends of the Arts was assembled to pick pieces that fit what the city was looking for—an outdoor sculpture and an interactive indoor art experience. “The city wanted [The Shops at West End] to be pedestrian friendly with gathering spaces for the public,” says Sean Walther, senior planner at the City of St. Louis Park. “Plus, the city’s vision includes promotion of public art in the community.”

Near Rainbow at the intersection of 16th Street and West End Boulevard, local artist Foster Willey Jr.’s Bee Way is on display. These steel sculptures feature bases covered in honeycombs as the two structures pay homage to the WPA Beehive Fireplace along Hwy 100 on Lilac Way. Stop by the structures, take a long, hard look, and you’ll see that the steel tops, which represent the whirling flight of bees, are moving and relying on the wind for movement.

The second piece of public art is found inside the Showplace ICON Theatres. Enter the theater on the ground floor, look up, and you’ll see the Aurora Organ. This interactive light sculpture by Camille Utterback perfectly fit the interactive art experience the committee was looking for, says Walther. Move up to the second floor and touch the lights on the railings to change the lighting yourself. The San Francisco-based interactive artist’s work can also be found

at the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh.

Wander into the shops and art abounds. Santa Fe sculptural artist Somers’s line of jewelry is found exclusively in Minnesota at Bergstrom Jewelers. His line of bracelets, necklaces and earrings features tiny sculptures made out of everything from alabaster to solid rock and marble.

The popular Pandora® line, which features more than 3,500 handmade charms, can be found at Wedding Day Diamonds. Here

you can design your own personalized piece of jewelry (such as one

shown at left). “We can custom create anything,” says store manager Shauna Kleffman.

Wedding Day Diamonds also sells Scottish designer

Maeve Gillies’s MaeVona bridal jewelry, which brings an artisan design aesthetic to engagement and wedding rings.

If you’re looking for fun accessories to spice up an outfit but prefer the affordable route, Charming Charlie has costume jewelry organized by color and style for easy shopping. Playful designs, patterns and textures are found throughout the store.

But artful design is not just limited to the stores; Shops at West End restaurants feature a bevy of great design. Cooper features hand-etched glass windows, a carved wood bar, frescoed ceilings and floors inspired by worn leather. Plus, just like Kieran Folliard’s other Irish pubs in the Twin Cities, Cooper’s bar was created in Ireland and shipped stateside.

Boutique shop Pink Champagne showcases paintings by local artist Yang Yang, whose works are widely collected by public and private collectors. His museum exhibitions include the Museum of Fine Art in Shannxi, China, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, one of the top ten comprehensive museums in the United States.

Cross the street to find five hand-blown glass chandeliers by New Orleans arts and crafts sculptor Andrew Brott in CRAVE. Brott has partnered with CRAVE at all of their nationwide locations to create one-of-a-kind lighting pieces that fit the aura and personality of each restaurant. “These chandeliers are based off of an Asian influence,” Brott says. He worked with interior designer Kara Karpenske as well as Crave owners Kam and Keyvan Talebi to create these original works of art. “It’s about creating an atmosphere with lots of energy that fits the passion of the restaurant,” Brott says.

Last but not least, The Shops at West End is proud to play host to art fairs that showcase local artists. The first is Aug. 20 and will accompany the Rockin’ for Music Ed block party. Two additional art fairs are planned for 2011 – Saturday, Nov. 19 and Sunday, Dec. 11. Featured work includes paintings, photography, pottery, jewelery and glass works.

DHARMA LOGOS

Meet your neighbors: building bridges through images photo projectSt. Louis Park teenagers from varied backgrounds participated in the “Meet Your Neighbors: Building Bridges through Images” photo project. During a three-month period they met with local photographer Sharon Lyon, who worked with them on photo composition techniques. Between sessions the teens took photos of their lives using the techniques they learned. The idea of the project was to capture images of St. Louis Park reflecting these young people’s traditions and daily life, and through this exhibit educate the community about its vibrant cultural tapestry.

The framed photos are on display in The Shops at West End theatre building’s lower atrium through August 22, 2011.

The project was sponsored by Children First, St. Louis Park’s community initiative to build developmental assets in young people and made possible through a St. Louis Park Arts & Culture Grant, a collaborative partnership between the City of St. Louis Park, St. Louis Park Friends of the Arts and the St. Louis Park Community Foundation. More details on this project can be found at www.children-first.org.

Table for Four and a Half

16 theshopsatwestend.com

Get four strangers together for a dinner quad-date and the topic naturally turns to The Bachelorette, pregnancy, gnocchi and the Mediterranean diet. Well, maybe not. Normally this would be a stretch, but not with this group when they dined at Sopranos on a gorgeous summer evening.

Michelle Margo was the group’s resident Italian expert. She knows downhome Italian, as she grew up cooking with her mother and her grandmother who grew up in Calabria, Italy. From the get-go, Michelle loved Sopranos’ feel. “I gotta get my mom and grandma in here!” she proclaimed.

Getting to Sopranos was something Lindsay Ferris Martin knew all too well. The mama-to-be has driven to The Shops at West End from St. Paul to satisfy cravings for linguine and clams. “This is the only place I can find with this dish!” she said. At more than eight months pregnant, she regaled the table with a story about her and her husband making the more than 30-minute trek to get the dish. And, of course, when she walked into Sopranos her baby started kicking. “I think she loves the smells,” Lindsay said.

Before she even arrived, everyone was a bit nervous about dining with registered dietician Linda Block. “I hope she doesn’t judge what I order!” Michelle said. But Block told her fellow diners to order away. “I eat nearly everything,” she said. “You just have to watch portions.”

The ladies were all quick to get advice on staying trim from personal trainer Kirk DeWindt. The former Bachelorette contestant had just returned from Los Angeles where he filmed the upcoming ABC TV show, Bachelor Pad, which premieres Aug. 8. Michelle, an avid Bachelor/Bachelorette fan, had lots of questions for the Wisconsin native. While the details of being on reality shows had to stay confidential at the table, Kirk was more than willing to share his experiences.

And so the dining began. General manager Billy Ellis stopped by to give a rundown of the menu, which runs the gamut of authentic Italian dishes. Plus, Ellis said, the majority of the food in Sopranos kitchen is “off the boat” from Italy. With JP Samuelson of jP’s American Bistro fame at the helm of the kitchen and homemade pasta, these diners were excited about the meal to come.

Speaking of authentic Italian, this place boasts a wine list that is no joke. Eighty percent of the wines in their gigantic wine cellar are Italian, and their house pour is from the “Godfather” himself—Francis Ford Coppola. Ellis joked that many people want to see the wine contract just to sneak a peek at Coppola’s signature!

Linda and Michelle opted for the red house pour, which comes in quarter, half and whole liter sizes, and were delighted by the large sampling of eight ounces. Kirk went for the Ripasso Bolla and couldn’t stop gushing.

The group started with appetizers including a perfectly done calamari, meatball sliders and bruschetta with flavorful tomatoes. “I love the seasoning in the meatballs,” Linda said. “The red sauce is really nice,” said Michelle. But the clear winner in the first course was the bruschetta. “Those tomatoes are amazing,” said Michelle. Kirk agreed. “This one’s my favorite,” he said.

Next up, the group gave the antipasti bar a whirl with a nice sampling of artisanal cheese, cured meats, roasted vegetables, pasta and olives. “This is a great starter plate,” Michelle said. “I love the thought of it.”

For the main course, Michelle went for the lobster gnocchi. She was excited about finding a gnocchi that reminded her of her

grandmother’s. “They’re like pillows!” she exclaimed. And the lobster, cooked fresh that day, was “perfect,” she said.

Linda and Lindsay both opted for the linguine and clams, but Lindsay, a vegetarian, ordered without bacon but with lots of red pepper flakes. “I love spicy food,” she said, as she dug into her dish de jour. And her baby girl enjoyed the meal as well. “She’s kicking up a storm,” Lindsay said. Linda loved the clams in the dish saying it was the only place she’s gotten real clams in a dish like this.

Kirk, no doubt intrigued by the name, choose Strozzapreti & Pesto – Strozzapreti translates as “priest choker” in Italian. Server Sarah claimed the noodles did indeed look

like nooses! He was wowed by his dish filled with delicate pesto, chicken and tomato. “I think I won here!” Kirk exclaimed of his dining choices.

Linda pointed out to the diners how all of their meals were a perfect example of the Mediterranean diet. There were a lot of heart-healthy oils, salads with lots of folic acids and small cuts of meat and cheese throughout the meal. “This is the way Europeans have been eating for centuries,” Linda said. “Sopranos does a good job of not Americanizing their Italian food,” she said

Michelle agreed. “It’s about time we had a good Italian restaurant in town,” she said. “It really feels like you’re at home.”

"I think I won here!" Kirk exclaimed of his dining choice.

Next it was time for the final course: dessert. The group, already chatting like long-lost friends, decided to share options so they could try everything. Their dessert selections, prepared by La Belle Vie’s pastry chef Diane Yang, included lemon baby cakes, a lemon cheesecake, Italian must-have tiramisu, biscotti and a cinnamon gelato “ice-cream” sandwich, which was met with a few “oohs” as it landed on the table. The small dessert samplings were a perfectly sweet way to end the meal.

The reaction from the friendly strangers to Sopranos? Nothing but positive. “This place is totally worth the 30 minute drive for me,” Lindsay said. Linda agreed, “Everything was perfect.”

The Chicago Tribune called it “a thrilling experience.” “Breathtaking!” enthused O, The Oprah Magazine. The Houston Chronicle declared it “ just plain jaw-dropping,” while The Denver Post summed up the Cavalia experience with just three words: “Man. Horse. Magic!”

Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Human and Horse has been enchanting audiences and garnering rave reviews since it first embarked on its tour in 2003. The grand-scale show featuring 39 performers and 45 horses from around the world has been seen by close to three million people across North America and Europe.

Now, Cavalia’s famous White Big Top – the largest touring big top in the world – is set to go up at The Shops at West End this fall, marking the show’s first visit to the Twin Cities. Opening Night is Wednesday, Sept. 21.

Cavalia is a celebration of both the equestrian arts and the performing arts, and is the brainchild of Normand Latourelle, one of the founders of Canada’s famed Cirque du Soleil.

“Horses have enormous presence on stage,” says Latourelle. “Cavalia is the result of a 10-year quest to find a dramatic way to incorporate the power of horses and their mysterious beauty into a captivating multi-media experience. My passion in life is to make people dream. Cavalia honors the mystique of horses, their ability to connect uniquely with human beings and their extraordinary achievements across our history.”

Cavalia’s White Big Top is at the heart of a nine-tent village, with its 110-foot height the equivalent of a ten-story building. Equally spectacular in sunshine or strategically lit against the night sky, it was custom-made in Italy and designed specifically to accommodate the requirements of the show.

From the natural interaction between the colts and the human performers in the prologue, to the disciplined movements of the carousel and mirror acts, to the exhilarating athleticism of the vaulting, Roman riding, and trick riding, Cavalia’s action rivets the audience’s attention to the stage.

Above the stage, aerialists soar, whether alone, as pairs or a group, or with riders mounted on beautiful baroque horses. On stage, acrobats amaze the audience with leaps, tumbles, and movements that defy the laws of gravity and the limits of human anatomy.

This fall, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the mystery and witness the magic of Cavalia for yourself.

Cavalia offers a variety of ticket options for adults and children. Prices vary according to seat category and day. Both the Rendez-Vous package and the Horse Lover tickets offer premium seats and a visit to Cavalia’s stables after the show. For show dates and ticket information call 1-866-999-8111 or visit www.cavalia.net.

Minneapolis native Mike Neaton never thought much of his look until image consultant Gretchen Ditto came along. After his wife had a consultation with Gretchen, Mike found himself in need of new suits, so he sought out Gretchen’s help in obtaining a more professional look. “I used to get a lot of suits in secondhand stores, but they weren’t the right fit and they didn’t last as long,” Mike says. “I knew it was time to make an adjustment.”

In comes Gretchen. Her first step in consultation is to examine the client’s color palette with a custom color analysis where she focuses on the four body colors: eye color, skin tone, hair color and the red tones found in skin color. “Color is important to make someone look their best,” Gretchen says. “Plus, once we know what colors look good, it eliminates 80 percent of clothing and makes shopping easier.” Mike

agrees. “I know black and grey are not good for my color palette, and knowing that has made shopping a lot easier,” he says.

That was early 2011, and Mike has carried the lessons Gretchen taught him throughout the spring. Now, Mike is in need of help finding casual and business casual looks that work for him. Gretchen to the rescue again.

Mike and Gretchen head off to The Shops at West End in search of a new look for Mike and a much needed haircut. The first stop on Mike’s Makeover Tour is at RAZE Salon, a Regis concept with only two locations in the Twin Cities. Mike admits he’s needed a haircut for a few weeks and happily plunks down in the soft, leather chair. After stylist Shannon gives him a scalp massage and a detailed haircut and styles his hair using Crew products, he loves the look. “I’m very happy with it,” Mike says of his new cut.

Page 26: West End Compass August 2011

Jesse Valley Photography

Mike is also in need of a new pair of glasses, admitting that he’s had his current pair for three years and wants to try something new. Across the street at Costco, Gretchen points out some pairs that are good with his color palette and work better with his brown eyes than his current black pair. The duo settle on a Tom Ford wire-framed pair with a soft brown temple that works well on his oval face. “The brown in these glasses really accentuates his eyes,” Gretchen says.

Then it’s off to Republic of Couture for some date night outfits. Gretchen suggests a dark denim and business shoe or non-athletic sneakers to dress up an outfit. Mike rarely wears color, so Gretchen picks out a purple PreView shirt with fun, patterned to work well with his skin tones. Add dark, slim-fitting Taverniti jeans and black Saminto Laurenzini shoes, and the look is complete. “I’d definitely wear this to a happy hour or dinner date,” Mike said.

Next stop is JoS. A. Bank for a business casual look. “A lot of people wear business casual wrong,” Gretchen says. “Business casual just means no suit and no tie – you should still have on a sport coat and a dress shirt,” she says. She puts Mike in tan slacks, a tan sport coat with a subtle pattern, a navy sweater vest, and a striped dress shirt. While Mike says the look is too casual for a day in court since it’s missing a tie,

he still loves the look. Plus, he raves about the chestnut brown shoes from Johnston & Murray.

With Gretchen’s guidance, new duds from West End, and a sharp haircut, Mike is officially made over. He loves his new look and says that what Gretchen has taught him will help him shop in the future. Plus, he’s been getting compliments, especially from his wife. “Those are the compliments that count!” exclaims Gretchen. We agree.

Tips for Looking your

Best from Consultant

Gretchen Ditto

TIPS FOR WOMEN

1. Embrace Your Body Shape “Whether women lose or gain weight, they will always have the same body shape. Learn how to dress your shape and not someone else’s.”

2. Forget the Sentimental “A lot of women hang onto things in their closet that mean something to them, but they haven’t worn in years. Toss it.”

3. Be Thrifty “Only buy something full price if it fits perfectly. You don’t need a ton of clothes, just ones that fit right.”

TIPS FOR MEN

1. Loose Is Not the Answer “A lot of men think that casual means baggy, make sure you’re buying the right size and your clothes aren’t too big.”

2. Keep It Simple “When it comes to jewelry, less is more. Men should just wear a wedding ring and a watch.”

3. Don’t be Afraid of Color “Men don’t have much to accessorize with, so wear bold shirts with fun colors and patterns.”

Minnesota retailers know the importance of featuring locally made products and including local designers in their stores, and the West End is no different. Local toymakers, designers, wineries, breweries and food vendors are featured throughout the lifestyle center.

Creative KidStuff features locally made toys including Namaste Kid yoga sets for toddlers, Magic Dice math products, and colorful hair clips from Klipeez. Plus,

favorite local children’s authors are found here, including Nancy Carlson, who has penned such classics as the Henry series and Get Up and Go! Coloring books by local authors, including Gary Harbo and Holly Sue Foss, are also found here.

Local restaurateur Kieran Folliard’s 2 Gingers whiskey is poured exclusively at his pubs, including Cooper, as well as The Local and Kieran’s in downtown Minneapolis. While the whiskey is made in an Irish distillery, it’s only poured here in Minnesota. Folliard, who is notorious for selling lots of Jameson—the most in the world!—in his bars now replaces whiskey pours with 2 Gingers in his cocktails, including the popular Big Ginger. Rumors abound about the popular whiskey moving to liquor stores.

And speaking of liquor stores, a trip to Rainbow’s liquor store proves that they have award-winning

Minnesota wines on hand, including Alexis Bailey from Hastings, St. Croix Valley from Stillwater and Chisago City’s Winehaven wines, which feature an interesting assortment of honey wine, rhubarb wine and cranberry wine. Plus, local brews of Schell’s, Surly, Summit and Grain Belt are found in the liquor store’s beer cooler, and at restaurants throughout The Shops at West End.

And new this year, the City of St. Louis Park has expanded its Farmers Market to The Shops at West End Wednesdays 10:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. Locally grown

produce, flowers, honey, breads and crafts such as leather toys and soaps are available at the market, which goes until Oct. 12.

“We wanted to offer a market on the north side of town, and West End is a great location

with a lot of foot traffic,” says the City of St. Louis Park’s recreation coordinator Lisa Abernathy. “We anticipate a great turnout this summer!”

Whether you seek locally made products, want to indulge in Minnesota produce, or

like to sip your favorite Minnesota made brew, The Shops at West End merchants have what you’re

looking for.

“Community Connection” is a space for The Shops at West End to connect and hear from organizations within our community. Our first interview is with Officer Ken Sysko of St. Louis Park Police Department.

weC: The police department has an office at The Shops at West End. What is this location used for?

KS: District officers utilize the office to write reports and hold meetings with neighborhood, community and business members and leaders. This office, along with the SLPPD’s three other “Cop Shops,” are not occupied at all times, but by having these facilities officers can interact with the community, which creates more of a police presence in the area. weC: Does St. Louis Park have a curfew?

KS: The city adheres to the Hennepin County curfew laws established by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office. Here is an overview of curfew laws: under 12, home by 9 p.m. on weekdays and 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; 12-14 years old, 10 p.m. weekdays and 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; 15-17 years old, 11 p.m. weekdays and midnight Fridays and Saturdays. Employment and other late activities may exempt a juvenile from these laws with parent’s permission. weC: Does the St. Louis Park Police Department send officers and police cars to neighborhood block parties or special events?

KS: Yes. Community and business members can request to have an officer attend a meeting or gathering with a fully equipped squad car. The person making the request can either speak with myself at (952) 924-2661 or call the police department at (952) 924-2600. The person’s request is then given to the appropriate officer. weC: We’ve read that the holidays are a popular time for car break-ins across the country. What should people do to secure their vehicles?

KS: Make sure your vehicle’s windows are up and your vehicle is locked. DO NOT keep personal items in your vehicle. If it is necessary for you to store valuables in a vehicle, stow them out of sight. Preferably stow those valuables prior to arriving at your final destination. Park in a well-lighted, well-traveled area and familiarize yourself with the area before arriving. Be mindful of who is around and report suspicious activity. These tips should be practiced not only around the holidays but everyday. Repetition builds good practices and habits.

Sysko was sworn into the St. Louis Park Police Department in September 2007; in January 2011 he became the police department’s community outreach officer.
