Before the traveller, almost all the way, is a huge pile of purple mountain, on which, as one comes nearer, one perceives numberless waves and breaks, as you see small waves on a willow in the sea; then clambering up a hill, we look down upon a bright green flat of land, with the lake beyond it, girt round by grey melancholy hills. The water may be a mile in extent. I felt not sorry to have seen this lonely lake. There it lies with crags all round it, in the midst of desolate plains: it escapes somewhere to the sea: its waters are salt: half-a-dozen boats lie here and there upon its banks, and we saw a small crew of boys plashing about and swimming in it, laughing and yelling. “ “We see the water before us, and turning to the right by the handsome little park of Lord Bearhaven, enter Bantry. County CorkM A R I T I M E T O U R I S M G U I D E

I N T R O D U C T I O NA coastline with rugged physical beauty, stunning scenery, an unspoiled

environment and a warm welcome, as well as culture and history rich in diver-

sity ensure that the county of Cork is simply unique. This in combination with

the warming influence of the Gulf Stream, blue flag beaches, marine facilities

and an array of water activities ensures that Cork can offer something special

to the discerning visitor. During your visit to the region, we invite you to sample

the many destinations and leisure pursuits outlined in this brochure.

Cork’s Maritime History The city of Cork and indeed all of its coastal towns and villages have strong maritime roots originating from the

Scandinavian Viking longships. It is believed that Cork County’s maritime history began with the discovery of

copper deposits in Allihies, West Cork, thereby initiating a trade link with other mining areas.

A former adage for the city of Cork is “Statio Bene Fida Carini”, which denotes ‘A safe anchorage for ships’. The arms of

the city show a sailing ship with three masts, between the two towers of the Port. Another former name for Cork was

‘Bealach Coullach’ or the ‘Way of the Tribes’. It is apparent that the very existence of Cork was extremely dependent

on the deep natural harbour leading into the city.

During the 8th and 9th Century, fleets of fishing and trading boats visited ports right along the Cork coast from the

scenic walled port of Youghal, lying at the mouth of the Blackwater River, to the charming towns and villages of

Kinsale, Baltimore and Schull. The Viking invasions began during the 9th Century, this was followed by the raids by

the Anglo-Normans who then captured the city in 1177. Cork was granted its royal charter in 1185, thereby granting

its status as a city in Ireland.

The Port of Cork gained prominence during the 12th Century as a centre of trade in agricultural produce. The

hinterland of the city produced an abundance of agricultural produce, particularly butter that was then exported

through the port. During the 18th Century, reclamation of the marshes surrounding the city increased Cork Port’s

capacity and position as the principal port in Munster. This lead to the establishment of trade links with ports along

the French and Iberian coastline, with Bordeaux in France emerging as the most important market for Irish produce

in France. It is believed that the rise in the demand for shipbuilding lead to the revitalisation of Cork’s fortunes

during the 19th Century.

In 1678, work began on a fortress at the entrance to Kinsale harbour, where the intention was to ensure protection

and safe passage for ships. The fort was built in a star-like shape allowing for additional defence of the fort with the

five-pointed bastion. This fortress was named Charles Fort. Across the harbour lies James Fort, built in 1601 to

protect the town of Kinsale.

In 1805, the construction began of five Martello Towers to guard Cork harbour at the following locations;

Ringaskiddy, Haulbowline, Belvelly, Monning and Rossleague. Cobh is one of the most prominent towns along the

Cork coastline. The town was Ireland’s main emigration town following the Great Famine of 1846 to 1848. Previously,

Cobh was renamed as Queenstown in honour of Queen Victoria’s visit to the town in 1849. Cobh was also the

departure point for thousands of Irish emigrants, the most famous of these was Annie Moore and her two brothers

who departed Queenstown (Cobh) aboard the ‘SS Nevada’ bound for the infamous port in Ellis Island, New York.

Annie was the first emigrant to be accepted into New York and a memorial can be found at the quayside in Cobh and

at Ellis Island.

On the 11th of April 1912, the newly built White star liner the ‘Titanic’ embarked on her maiden voyage across the

Atlantic. The liner stopped at Roches Point, off Cobh to collect more passengers and these were the last passengers

to board the ill-fated liner as it set off on its trans-Atlantic voyage. A mere three years later, another maritime tragedy

happened off the coast of Kinsale. In May 1915, a liner named the ‘Lusitania’ departed from New York en route to

Liverpool. However, the liner was struck by a torpedo 10 miles off the coast of Kinsale and sank in a mere 91 metres

of water. The incident had momentous consequences as it lead to the involvement of the United States of America

in World War I. There are memorials in Cobh to remember the victims of both the ‘Titanic’ and ‘Lusitania’.

It is suggested that the phrase “By hook or by crook” refers to the length of coastline from Hook Head in Wexford to

Crookhaven in West Cork. Many shipwrecks lie off this coastline, including the ‘SS Sirius’ which was the first passen-

ger steamship to cross the Atlantic, and now lies off the small fishing village of Ballycotton in East Cork. The

aforementioned ‘Lusitania’ remains off the Old Head of Kinsale.

In 1720, the first yacht club in the world was founded with its headquarters in Hawlbowline Island in Cork harbour.

It was known as The Water Club of Cork. By 1831 the club was granted its admiralty warrant thereby becoming ‘The

Royal Cork Yacht Club’. The RCYC organised a regatta in 1928, which instigated a turnaround in the fortunes of the

club. In 1966, the club moved to its present location in Crosshaven. Following this, the RCYC launched another

regatta in 1986, which became known locally as ‘Cork Week’. This is now run as a biennial event and attracts contest-

ants from far and wide.

Due to its southerly location and the influence of the Gulf Stream, the Baltimore area enjoys a climate unlike the rest

of the Cork coastline. Ireland’s only marine nature reserve Lough Hyne, is situated near Baltimore in West Cork. This

unique lake is filled by water from the Atlantic by a narrow tidal channel know as ‘the rapids’. Roaringwater Bay is

another beautifully scenic location that is home to the Carbery Hundred Isles, charming villages and places of quiet

anchorage, in addition to an abundance of sea life such as dolphins, whales and seals. An interesting detail about

Baltimore is that pirates from the Barbery Coast in Morocco raided the village in 1631. They kidnapped over one

hundred people and brought them back to Morocco with them. The Fastnet Lighthouse is more commonly known

as the ‘Teardrop of Ireland’ as it was the last sight of Ireland for many emigrants.

We hope that this brief synopsis of our heritage and unique location, entices you to visit the many destinations and sample

the numerous activities on offer along the 1,000 kilometres of Cork coastline dappled with numerous bays and inlets.
