For more than 100 years,Balfour Beatty has created andcared for the vital assets that enablesocieties and economies to grow. With operations in more than 80countries, Balfour’s global staff iscomprised of designers, planners, engineers, builders, project andfacilities managers, analysts andconsultants. Through more than50,000 employees worldwide,Balfour Beatty is one of only a fewcompanies with the expertise andresources to deliver complex andlarge-scale projects, handling allstages of the infrastructure lifecy-cle — from financing, throughplanning and design, to construc-tion, maintenance and support, according to the company.Given this wealth of experience

and capability, it is no surprise thatwhen Dallas Fort WorthInternational Airport needed torenovate its four older terminals, itsought out Balfour Beatty to man-age and execute the project.Balfour Beatty was brought onboard as the construction managerfor the six- to seven-year project torenovate two of the terminals, dividing the project into six phases.

Opportunity: MobileAccess to Large Drawing Sets

Balfour Beatty employees need-ed constant access to up-to-datedrawing sets, from any locationonsite. While a set of drawings fora project typically consists of lessthan 3,000 sheets, the large-scalenature of this project was projectedto require 20 times the normal size,or about 60,000 sheets for all sixphases of the project. Given thatemployees needed access to thecurrent drawings, new and updateddrawings would have to be printedand delivered to employees on sitewith each new modification orupdate. Jeff Pistor, project manag-er of Balfour Beatty, noted that thefive sets of early stage drawings forphase one of the projects alone hadcost almost $60,000. Realizing thatfull size sets of drawings would be

needed for the jobsite office and inthe construction area, over the lifeof the project, the cost of drawingsfor Balfour Beatty alone could eas-ily have exceeded $500,000 perterminal.Concern over Internet access to

the drawing sets was a key issue, particularly for project superin-tendents. Historically, superintend-ents go to a plan room located inthe job site office to look at draw-ings. In the airport’s case, the actu-al job site was 1.5 miles away, andwith the time to get in and out ofsecure areas at the airport, travelingback and forth from the job site tothe office trailer would take at least20 minutes each way. That time(and money) was saved by theadoption of iPads to access projectdrawings.Other challenges surrounded the

control and access of documentsfor all of the stakeholders. With thedrawings continuing to be refined, distribution of the most up-to-dateversion of the drawing set was crit-ical. The potential for subcontrac-tors to be using outdated plans, leading to confusion and potentialre-work, was immense.

Challenge: Provide SecureOnline and Offline Access

to WorkersThe solution was to eliminate

the paper and to provide the teamwith real time access to electronicdrawing sets. The existing Internetconnection in the jobsite office wasnot robust, especially with 70workers trying to access the cloud.

In addition, speed limitations andcoverage concerns existed withinthe construction space itself.Project team members needed asolution that provided online andoffline access to workers at alltimes, with efficient use of avail-able network bandwidth. With so many different contrac-

tors working on a project of thisscale and with unique securityrequirements, a solution with gran-ular permissions was key. BalfourBeatty needed separate folders andpermissions for contractors access-ing the drawings on this project. An airport employee recom-

mended Egnyte as a solution.

Solution: Hybrid Cloud FileServer with iPad AccessHosting the drawings on the

cloud worked well but it soonbecame clear that the number ofdrawings being accessed from theEgnyte cloud file server was eatingup bandwidth and becoming anissue as the jobsite staff increased. To solve the problem, they chose todeploy Egnyte’s Enterprise LocalCloud on a VMware based virtualserver on an existing file server.“Egnyte’s Enterprise Local

Cloud [ELC] allowed us to reducethe amount of bandwidth used toaccess the cloud. The ELC was setup to sync with Egnyte on thecloud every 15 minutes. Instead ofeveryone going out to the cloud toretrieve drawings, they were sim-ply mapped to the ELC,” saidPistor. “This provided quick accessto the large drawing sets for our

staff.”When out in the construction

areas, employees carry iPads withthem for accessing the drawingsets. Egnyte, integrated with theGoodReader app on the iPad,enables employees to downloadthe drawing sets and cache thedrawings for local access. Insteadof having to haul around 60,000-sheet drawing sets or walk to a job-site office to access them (awayfrom the issue they are trying toaddress), employees now simplystash the iPad in their bag whenheading to the job site.“For this project, we developed

a ‘recycle less’ mantra and havesaved several hundred full-sizerecycle bin’s worth of material bynever printing the drawing sets inthe first place,” said BenBringardner, assistant manager, integrated projects of BalfourBeatty. “Over the life of the projectwe would have printed drawingsets weighing 9,000 lbs. andstacked 20 feet high if we had notestablished the cloud based paper-less document management sys-tem.”Field superintendents also love

the paperless solution, as it allowsthem to address many issues fromwherever they are. Many havecited how hard it is to imagine lifebefore electronic documents anddrawings and iPads. As one super-intendent recently said, “You’llhave to pry it from my cold deadhands. I don’t how know how any-thing’s gotten built in the past 20years.”

DFW recently entered into asustainability partnership with theEnvironmental Protection Agency, and is thrilled that Balfour Beattywas able to come up with a sus-tainable solution in the reconstruc-tion of the two terminals. DFWprojects that the design team is sav-ing them $5.1 million (71 percent)in costs by using Egnyte.“By selecting Egnyte for this

project, Balfour enabled us to takean innovative approach that sup-ports sustainability,” said JulieLudeman, TRIP communicationsdirector. “We are thrilled theychose a hybrid cloud solution thathas the redundancy, security andflexibility necessary for a programof this size.”“Egnyte provides our partners

with BARC the flexibility theyneed and the security we require,”said Perfecto Solis, vice presidentof airport development and engi-neering at DFW. “As part of oursustainability initiatives we contin-ue to look for ways within ourorganization to go paperless andhope to use products like Egnytefor future projects.”

Take the Next StepMore than1 billion files are

shared daily by businesses usingEgnyte. Egnyte provides the speedand security of local storage withthe accessibility of the cloud. Userscan easily store, share, access andbackup files, while IT has the cen-tralized administration and controlto enforce business policies.Egnyte, founded in 2007, is basedin Mountain View, Calif., and is aprivately held company backed byventure capital firms GoogleVentures, Kleiner Perkins Caufield& Byers, Floodgate Fund andPolaris Venture Partners. For more information, call

Thirty years after Hamm builtthe first oscillatory rollers, thisintelligent technology is now mak-ing its debut in the minus 9,000 lbs.weight class at Hamm. A total offour models with oscillation tech-nology are available, identifiableby an “O” in the name: HD 10 VO(5,500 lbs. [2,494 kg]), HD 12 VO(6,000 lbs. [2,721 kg]), HD 13 VO(8,800 lbs. [3,991 kg]) and HD 14VO (9,500 lbs. [4,309 kg]). All ofthem are equipped with one oscil-latory and one vibratory drum.

The advantage of oscillation is itachieves a rapid increase in com-paction because the oscillationdrum directs tangential thrustingforces into the material to be com-pacted while remaining constantlyin contact with the ground. Thecombination of continuously act-ing static load and changingdynamic shear forces in the materi-al brings about a faster, better andmore gentle compaction. Moreover the amplitude and inturn the compaction power adaptautomatically to the stiffness pres-ent. Hamm achieves this effectwithout electronics, but throughintelligent application of the lawsof physics.

Wide ApplicationSpectrum for

Oscillatory RollersThe new Hamm rollers with one

oscillatory and one vibratory drumincrease compaction speed andquality, according to the manufac-turer. Applications can be found inurban centers for example. Thereason: oscillation drums can com-pact dynamically even on narrowconstruction sites, because thiscompaction technology does notdisturb buildings or pipeworkbelow the road surface throughvibration.

Oscillation also optimizes com-paction at joints to existing roadsurfaces, because it does not dam-age the cold asphalt. So the com-paction on small job sites will bemore effective than before whenusing oscillatory rollers.

During the compaction of thinlayers on tack coat or spray seal, the high compaction speed makesa noticeable improvement. A fur-ther plus point in favour of oscilla-tory rollers is that they also workvery efficiently on cooled asphalt.

Last but not least, oscillatorycompaction also optimizes manylandscaping applications. Water-

bound path surfaces or asphaltcycle paths can be compacted sig-nificantly more efficiently with thenew rollers than heretofore.

HD 10C VT Combi RollerThe HD 10C VT is the smallest

combi roller in the CompactLinewith a working width of 3.5 ft.(1.06 m) and operating weight of3,500 lbs. (1,587 kg). It comeswith permanent all-wheel drive asstandard. This distinguishes itfrom all other compact rollers inthis size and gives it outstandinggradeability in all situations, according to the manufacturer.

New Options: Drivers’Cab and Chip SpreaderHamm has developed a fully-

enclosed driver’s cab for thelargest models in the compactclass, the HD 13 and HD 14. Thepanoramic cabin features full

height glazing and provides anoverview of the construction site.Hamm also has thought aboutmany other niceties and safety fea-tures: heating, radio, screenwipers, four halogen front head-lights (H9) and two rear spotlightsare some of the cab options.

With its own chip spreaders forthe CompactLine, Hamm offers acomplement to the rollers forrepair work on motorways or otherheavily used roads. The linearspreader has stepless adjustmentand is operated from the driver’sseat. Its diffusion grill produces aremarkably even distribution pat-tern. The chip spreader is availablein two spreading widths: 3.28 ft. (1m)/53 gal. (200 L) or 3.95 ft. (1.20m)/63 gal. (240 L). Mounting iseasy with a forklift truck and themounting point close to themachine frame ensures a favorableweight distribution.

Drum Lighting and HingedScraper for More Quality

and SafetyHamm has included an extreme-

ly bright drum lighting in its pro-gram for the entire CompactLine. The environment-friendly LEDlighting brings good illuminationto the working area. This is animportant quality and safety fea-ture, as the compact rollers fre-quently work at the end of theroller group in poorly illuminatedareas.

Another new option for allCompactLine models is the springloaded hinged scraper. It keeps thedrums clean while compacting andcan be hinged out of the way bymeans of a foot pedal for replace-ment or cleaning.

Hamm Adds Four Models With Oscillation TechnologyHamm offers two dif-ferent chip spreadersfor rollers from 5,000lbs. (2,268 kg) operat-ing weight.

There are countless areas of application for Hamm’s CompactLine with oscillation, for example thecompaction of thin layers on tack coat or spray seal, asphalt compaction in confined urban areasor along joints and even compaction of water-bound path surfaces in landscape gardening.

Wirtgen’s W 250i WIDRIVE Matches Brain With BrawnWirtgen’s Tier IV interim-com-

pliant W 250i offers high rates ofproductivity, maximum cost effi-ciency and fuel-efficient i-machinetechnology. This large cold millcan remove asphalt layers with amilling depth of up to 14 in. (35.5cm), and cut portland cement con-crete surfaces at a high advancerate.

This is possible due to its mus-cular power plant, matched withWIDRIVE intelligent machinemanagement system, three selec-table milling drum speeds, anddual engine concept, which keepsoperating costs exceptionally lowfor a cold milling machine in thisperformance class, according tothe manufacturer.

The dual engines of the W 250i— also seen on the W 210i —makes virtually two machines inone: a high-performance millingmachine with the full power of twoengines totaling 990 hp, and a cost-efficient mill with a single engineat 599 hp to economically removesofter asphalt surface courses orporous asphalt, for example.

The machine operator can setthe optimum drum speed for anyjob from the operator’s platformvia a selector switch, allowing himto adapt immediately to changingconditions.

For standard milling jobs, suchas the removal of a surface course, the W 250i can operate with themedium milling drum speed of1,800 rpm, which producesreclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP)at preferred aggregate sizes. Whenremoving thin surfaces at the max-imum advance rate, the highmilling drum speed of 2,000 rpmmay be selected, producing a supe-rior milling texture. And for maxi-mum productivity at lowest cost, the slowest speed of 1,600 rpm isthe right choice for reduced fuel con-sumption and low cutting tool wear.

The W 250i’s standard cuttingwidth is 7 ft. 3 in. (2.2 m), but thiscan be extended with additionaldrum units for working widths of 8ft. 2 in., 10 ft. 2 in., 11 ft. 6 in., 12ft. 6 in., and 14 ft. 5 in. (2.5, 3.1,3.5, 3.8 and 4.4 m). The optionalFCS Light quick-change systemfor milling drums permits a varietyof different milling operations viadifferent milling drums.

At the operator’s platform, amultifunctional control display

serves as a practical informationhub. It can be swung to the left orright of the operator, together withthe level pro control panel, and dis-plays operating status and servicedata.

The control display providesuser-friendly diagnostic optionswith clear graphics for identifyingthe source of any problem. Anotherhandy function is the logging ofjob data at the end of the day, showing how many trucks havebeen loaded and the overall ton-nage achieved.

Wirtgen's WIDRIVE machinemanagement system handles manytasks for the operator in automaticprocess chains, making it easy tolearn how to operate and controlthe W 250i. An optional camerasystem with two or six camerasalso is available to monitor up to

six working areas on the controldisplay.

The optional parallel-to-surface(PTS) system automatically alignsthe W 250i parallel to the road sur-face, ensuring simple, accurateoperation of the machine indemanding profiling jobs. PTSalso assists the operator in posi-tioning the machine in the milledcut to initiate the milling process. In automatic mode, the systemtakes care of all the steps that theoperator would otherwise need toselect manually, one after another.

The operator activates the levelpro level control system at the flickof a switch, and all four crawlertrack units of the large millingmachine are lowered simultane-ously at high speed. When themilling drum unit reaches the sur-face to be milled, the lowering

speed is reduced and the millingdrum slowly penetrates the materi-al down to the set depth. The auto-matic process helps to preventexcessive cutting tool wear or eventool failure when milling starts.

The same applies when the W250i is aligned transverse to thedirection of travel. In many cases, cold milling machines need toovercome significant differencesin height when being moved intoor out of the milled cut. The inte-grated four-fold, full-floating axlebalances out all four track unitsquickly and reliably to reduce themachine’s lateral inclination to aminimum. This lends a highdegree of stability to the largemilling machine while the opera-tor moves forward normally, according to the manufacturer.

The W 250i’s intelligent speed

control (ISC) system preventscrawler track slip and ensures per-fect traction of all track units toachieve maximum milling per-formance. This, in turn, reducestrack pad wear. When negotiatingbends, the ISC system automatical-ly increases the speed of the outercrawler tracks depending on thesteering angle. As a result, evenextremely narrow bends can bemilled using the all-track drive.

An optional vacuum cutting sys-tem (VCS) to reduce particulateemissions at the cutter head isavailable.

Bomag Compactor OffersIntelligent Machine Controls

Featuring intelligent machine controls forenhanced performance and optimal safety,Bomag’s BMP8500 articulated multi-pur-pose compactor offers versatile operation forcompaction of cohesive, semi-cohesive andnon-cohesive soil types in applications suchas trenches and foundations. The BMP8500 is powered by a 19.4-hp

(14.4 kW), three-cylinder, water-cooledKubota diesel engine that features EcoMode,a system that automatically idles the engineto conserve fuel during inactivity. UsingBomag’s intelligent vibration control (IVC)to achieve consistent compaction results, thecompactor has a dual exciter system and twoselectable amplitudes that deliver outputoptions of either 8,000 or 16,000 lbs. of cen-trifugal force. Rental centers or end users can quickly

adjust the compactor’s working width from24 to 33.5 in. (61 to 85 cm) with standardbolt-on drum extensions. The drum exten-sions are easily aligned and installed in 10 to20 minutes, accommodating different trenchdimensions while avoiding the hassle ofreplacing entire drum sets, according to themanufacturer.Operation of the BMP8500 is simple, due

to a dual function cable/radio remote control. The compactor’s hydrostatic drive systemoffers two travel speed ranges and provides

a high gradeability of 45-percent with vibra-tion. Additionally, the all-drum drive pro-vides enhanced traction, while a clear-sideddesign with no lateral overhang ensures fullcompaction against trench walls and obsta-cles.The BMP8500 is equipped with the

Bomag operator safety system (BOSS),which increases worker safety by automati-cally stopping machine travel if the operatoris in the safety zone. An integrated diagnos-tic system displays fault codes to make trou-bleshooting easy. Maintenance also is sim-plified by swing-out covers that fully open to90 degrees, providing efficient access to theengine and internal systems. Additionally, the durable composite hoods are impactresistant to protect the engine and compo-nents.Other standard features include articulated

steering, high-profile drums with a 1-in. (2.5cm) padfoot height, lockable hoods, hingedcenter lifting points for balanced lifts, hydro-static service brakes and a spring-applied,hydraulically released parking brake. For more information, call 309/853-3571

Contractors Need Small, Powerful Machines for Tight SpacesBy Jeff WinkeSPECIAL TO CEG

Some projects have small, tight spacesthat require compact equipment with themaneuverability of a sports car, not an 18-wheeler. In these cases, contractorsemploy small dozers, mini-excavators andcompact track loaders. Add to that mix asmall milling machine specifically suitedfor removing road pavements, millingpavement strips, or milling tie-ins.

The latest addition from Roadtec Inc. toits line of milling machines is the RX-100e— a highly maneuverable mini-size millwith a base cutting width of 20-in. (50 cm),maximum cutting depth of 8-in. (20 cm),and a drum diameter with teeth of 30-in.(75 cm).

The weight, power and dimensions ofthis compact machine make it the perfectoption for cutting trenches, demarcationand cutting around manhole covers, or forother narrow spaces. The RX-100e fea-tures a shipping weight of 15,840-lbs.(7,184 kg), a length of 12-ft. 8-in. (3.87m), and a width of 4-ft. 8-in. (1.42 m).

The RX-100e is a 140 hp (103 kW)machine with a hydraulically driven drumand features large access doors on bothsides of the machine for maintenance

access to the interior components. A Cummins QSB 4.5 Tier IVi compliant

diesel engine powers the small utility coldplaner. The RX-100e 140 hp engine iscooled by a high-efficiency variable speedfan. The speed of the fan is based on cool-ing demand, which is designed to decreasethe engine load and increase the fuel econ-omy of the machine.

To add functional versatility, the right, rear leg tube on the RX-100e is positionedalongside the cutter housing for normalmilling, but the leg tube also can be rotat-ed to a position in front of the cutter hous-ing for flush cut operations.

The operator station includes simplecontrols and the operator seat, which incor-porates comfort suspension and can slideout to the right of the machine forenhanced visibility.

The Roadtec RX-100e utility millingmachine is expected to be the ideal choicefor congested urban areas and other con-fined work sites.

VISTA Training Offers New PC-Based Bulldozer SimulatorVISTA Training, a leading provider of

training materials for earthmoving, excavat-ing and mining applications, has a new PC-based bulldozer simulator from Simlog.

This instructionally-designed simulationsoftware puts trainees at the controls of amedium-sized bulldozer at work in a typicalconstruction site. Seven simulation modulesare structured to train entry-level operatorson basic operation and core skills. Lessonsbegin with controls familiarization andprogress to more complex tasks, includingbulldozer positioning, using the blade tocontrol the path of a boulder, using the bladeto backfill a trench, slot dozing and spread-ing.

“This new dozer simulator is the perfectcomplement to VISTA’s dozer training pro-grams,” said VISTA Training President RickLongstaff. “By using them together, fleetowners can provide comprehensive yet cost-effective training to their operator candi-dates.”

Replica controls are available for the bull-dozer simulator. They offer a realistic train-ing experience and can be ordered withtabletop mounting brackets. For added real-ism, a bulldozer operator chair also is avail-able with an authentic operator seat andindustrial controllers mounted on consoles

for the left and right hands. The operatorchair can be easily reconfigured for use withother Simlog simulators.

The operation of the bulldozer simulatorcan be customized to simulate the behaviorof a wide variety of machines. For example,it can be configured to use separate foot ped-als for the decelerator and brake, or just a

single pedal that combines both functions.Blade speed also can be adjusted.

As trainees perform tasks in the simulator, the software records data about key per-formance indicators that measure howquickly and carefully the simulated work isperformed. The simulator tracks more than20 performance indicators, including task

execution time, machine collisions and crite-ria related to how well a trench is excavatedand backfilled. This data can be used to pro-vide diagnostic coaching to trainees, to helpthem overcome weak spots in their skills.

The bulldozer is the latest in a line-up of11 heavy equipment simulators.

Komatsu America Corp. Launches D65-18 Crawler DozerKomatsu America Corp.’s

D65EX/PX/WX-18 crawler dozers are pow-ered by a more powerful net 217 hpKomatsu SAA6D114E-6 engine that is EPATier IV Final emissions certified. A standard (EX), low ground pressure

(PX) and a wide (WX) track model areavailable to offer customers flotation andweight distribution options that best matchtheir applications. Operating weight rangesfrom 45,525 to 49,690 lbs. (20,649 to 25,539kg) depending on the version. The D65-18 combines the SIGMADOZ-

ER blade with an automatic transmissionwith torque converter lock-up to achieveincreased productivity and fuel economy. AKomatsu 6-way power angle tilt (PAT) bladealso is available for all models. The D65-18 is equipped with the latest

KOMTRAX remote monitoring technologywith data access via the web or via KOM-TRAX Mobile on your smart phone. Inaddition to providing data such as fuel levels, operating hours, location, cautions andmaintenance alerts, KOMTRAX has beenfurther enhanced to monitor AdBlue/DEFlevels, ambient air temperatures and pres-sures. A new operator identification systemreports key operating information for multi-ple operators. A new auto idle shutdownfunction helps improve operating costs byreducing unnecessary idle time.Special features of these new crawler doz-

ers include:

Komatsu EPA Tier IV FinalEmission Certified Engine —

Productive, Dependable, EfficientKomatsu’s EPA Tier IV Final engines are

built on the strength of its Tier IV Interimfoundation. By integrating selective catalystreduction (SCR), the Tier IV Final enginefurther reduces NOx emissions usingAdBlue/DEF. The Komatsu Tier IV Finalengine uses an advanced electronic controlsystem to manage the air-flow rate, fuelinjection, combustion parameters, and aftertreatment functions to optimize perform-ance, reduce emissions, and provideadvanced diagnostic capability. The result islower fuel consumption with no loss of per-formance. Komatsu continues to use aKomatsu variable geometry turbocharger(KVGT) and an exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) valve for more precise temperatureand air management control as well aslonger component life. To ensure product reliability and durabili-

ty in demanding conditions, Komatsu devel-oped the entire system, including the controlsoftware which is critical to the effectiveoperation of the aftertreatment system. Thiscontrol system also is integrated into themachine’s on-board diagnostics systems andKOMTRAX, Komatsu’s standard telemat-ics system.

Diverse Choice of Blades forVersatility and PerformanceThe D65EX and WX are equipped with

SIGMADOZER, providing the machinewith a large blade capacity of 7.34 and 7.72cu. yds. (5.6 and 5.9 cu m) respectively.Based on a completely new excavation the-ory, SIGMADOZER dramatically improvesdozing performance and increases produc-tivity by up to 15 percent over conventionalsemi-u blades. The Komatsu designed bladeincreases soil-holding capacity while simul-taneously reducing sideway spillage becauseit digs and rolls material up at the center ofthe blade. SIGMADOZER also reduces dig-ging resistance producing a smoother flowof material enabling the dozing of largeramounts of soil with less power, accordingto the manufacturer. A durable pat blade also is available for

each model. The manually adjustable bladepitch further expands the versatility and pro-ductivity in many applications.

Automatic Shift TransmissionImproves Fuel Economy

The D65-18 has a new automatic trans-mission with lock up torque converter thatreduces fuel consumption and offers greaterpower train efficiency. The lockup mechan-ics of the torque converter automaticallytransfer engine power directly to the trans-mission, reducing fuel consumption by up to10 percent. Two gearshift modes — automatic or

manual — can be easily selected to fit theappropriate application: automatic for allgeneral dozing and manual for dozing andripping rough ground.E and P modes help match machine per-

formance to the application. E mode is cho-sen for all general dozing, leveling andspreading applications providing ade-quate speed and power while savingup to 10 percent fuel usage. P modeis chosen for heavier applicationswhere engine power has priorityover fuel consumption.

Ergonomic Joystick Controls forEase of Operation and ComfortKomatsu’s palm command control sys-

tem (PCCS) gives operators maximum con-trol, offering a relaxed posture and superbfine control to minimize operator fatigue. The pilot controlled hydraulic blade and rip-per control joystick offer excellent blade andripper fine control. Powerful turns under various work condi-

tions are achieved with the hydrostatic steer-ing system (HSS) to transmit power to bothtracks without interruption. Counter-rotationis available in neutral for minimum turningradius, providing excellent maneuverability

Cab Design Creates OptimalOperator Environment

The crawler dozer’s comfortable caballows the operator to concentrate on thework at hand for increased productivity. Thelarge cab is integrated with ROPS andincludes a standard air suspension seat withheat. The cab provides a noticeably quiet work

environment with viscous cab mounts. Alarge 7 in. high-resolution color LCD moni-tor in the cab displays all machine informa-tion. A comfortable standard air suspensionseat with heat further enhances operatorcomfort. A rear-view monitoring system isstandard and can be set to synchronize withreverse operation.

Convenient Maintenance andReduced Operation Costs

Recognizing that maintenance is criticalfor successful equipment uptime, Komatsuhas designed the D65-18 with easy routinemaintenance in mind. Daily engine checksare grouped at the left-hand side of theengine compartment. A manually reversingfan allows for quick cleaning of the radiator. The D65-18 also comes standard with theparallel link undercarriage system (PLUS).This rotary bushing system doubles theundercarriage life compared to prior conven-tional systems, significantly lowering own-ing and operating costs. All Komatsu Tier IV machines come with

Komatsu Care. Komatsu Care providescomplimentary scheduled maintenance forthe first three years or 2,000 hours (whichev-er occurs first.) It also includes a 50-pointinspection at each service and two compli-mentary KDPF exchanges in the first fiveyears. For more information, visit www.komat-

Cat 824K Dozer Delivers Productivity With Durability The Cat 824K wheel dozer builds on the

solid performance of predecessor modelswith engineering refinements in its powertrain, operator station and structures, and infeatures that enhance safety, serviceabilityand machine management. With a net powerrating of 405 hp (302 kW) and a maximumoperating weight of 74,966 lbs. (34,004 kg),the 824K is available with six blade config-urations ranging in capacity from 6.6 to 21.1cu. yds. (5.0 to 16.2 cu m) to customize it forproduction dozing, stockpile dozing orcleanup work. The Cat C15 ACERT engine features an

electronically controlled fuel delivery sys-tem, an engine idle shutdown system to con-serve fuel by limiting idling time, and adelayed shutdown feature to ensure that theengine is not stopped until operating temper-atures have stabilized. Drive train efficiency, fuel economy, and travel speeds are furtherenhanced with the lock-up clutch in the Cattorque converter, a feature that reduces bothdrive train power losses and system heat. Two engine options are available that meet

either U.S. EPA Tier IV Final/EU Stage IVemission standards or U.S. EPA Tier III/EUStage IIIA equivalent emission standards. For further drive train efficiency, the

smooth-shifting, electronically controlled,4F/4R Cat power shift transmission can beset by the operator to automatically upshiftor downshift based on machine speed. Inaddition, the single clutch speed shiftingcontrols allow the 824K to carry momentumthrough range shifts for high productivityand fuel savings. Both operating efficiency and operator

convenience get a boost with the left footpedal, which serves as an engine decelerator, transmission neutralizer and brake, depend-ing on the degree of application. As a decel-erator, the left pedal allows the operator totemporarily reduce engine speed by overrid-ing the throttle lock setting when maneuver-ing around obstacles. Additionally, a new

fuel tank provides minimum 12 hours oper-ation, depending on the application. Anoptional tire pressure monitoring systemprovides real time information to the opera-tor in the cab, ensuring proper inflation andoptimizing tire life. The STIC (steering and transmission inte-

grated control) system allows single-leversteering and transmission control. Simpleside-to-side movements of the STIC leverprovide up to 43 degrees of steering articula-tion in both directions for precise maneuver-ability, and buttons on the lever provide fin-gertip control of directional and range shift-ing.

Operator EnvironmentA primary focus for the 824K design is

operator convenience and safety, such asproviding lighted, shallow-angle stairwaysfor entering and exiting the cab and design-

ing the STIC armrest to fold away for addedroom when entering or leaving the seat. Also, the Cat Comfort Series air-suspensionseat features extra thick cushions and movesboth the attached electro-hydraulic STIC-control pod and electro-hydraulic imple-ment-control pod when adjusted. The cab, isolation-mounted to the frame,

is pressurized with filtered air, and the select-ed temperature is maintained automatically. The control panel uses large, backlit switch-es with LED indicators, and a simple two-position rocker switch controls the parkingbrake. An optional rearview camera with in-cab monitor increases operator awareness.

Serviceability and MachineManagement

To promote the safety of personnel servic-ing the 824K, routine maintenance points aregrouped and accessible from ground level orfrom non-skid walkways that are protectedwith handrails. Swing-out doors on bothsides of the engine compartment provideeasy access to daily service checks, and ecol-ogy drains simplify service and help preventspills. In addition, a ground level powerservice center has electrical disconnect, emergency engine shutdown and stairwaylight switches. To further complement serviceability, the

Cat vital information system, VIMS 3G,

integrated into the 824K design keeps oper-ators informed about machine operatingconditions via a graphic display that featuresa touch-screen interface. To expand machinemonitoring capability, the Cat Product Linksystem provides event and diagnostic codes,as well as data such as operating hours, fuellevel and idle time. This information is trans-mitted to a secure web-based application,VisionLink, which can convey informationto machine owners and dealers, includingworking time versus idle time and mappingfunctions.

Durable StructuresThe 824K design integrates massive, pur-

pose-built structures and heavy-duty compo-nents that can support multiple rebuilds. Thenew dozer features a full box-section rearframe designed to resist twisting forces andshock encountered in heavy dozing. Steeringcylinder mounts are designed to effectivelydissipate steering loads into the frame, andaxle mounts are heavy duty components thatcontribute to the overall structural integrity. This robust design results in significant costsavings and sustained optimum performanceover the life cycle of the 824K.

Liebherr’s Newly Designed Generation6 Offers Reduced Fuel Consumption

Liebherr’s Generation 6 PR 736dozer has an operating weight between44,000 and 55,000 lb. (20,000 and25,000 kg) and has been newlydesigned for increased efficiency andfor reduced fuel consumption and CO2emissions.

This model features an electronical-ly-regulated travel drive with an inte-gral eco-function. When the operatorchooses between high-performancepotential and maximum economy, thesystem automatically selects the opti-mal setting for economical operation ofall travel-drive components.

Proactive power control is anotherGeneration 6 innovation. Travel drivesettings adjust automatically when theoperator selects a different level ofspeed by the joystick, which preparesthe power train for higher performancedemands. In addition to fast response, this new dozer offers increased per-formance potential.

To simplify the use of automaticmachine control systems, Liebherr sup-plies pre-installation kits for leadingmanufacturers’ systems. The automaticmachine control system provides theoperator with accurate guidance inorder to maintain consistent gradingquality.

Like all Liebherr dozers and loaders, the PR 736 features a hydrostatic trans-mission. This efficient driveline keepsthe engine speed at a constant level ofperformance. Power train componentsand Liebherr’s intuitive engine man-agement system match perfectly inorder to achieve high efficiency andlower fuel consumption, according tothe manufacturer.

The new PR 736 is equipped withseveral features that expedite and sim-plify service procedures. These includecentrally located maintenance points, access flaps and engine compartmentdoors that open to a wide angle. Themachine’s tilting cab is standard, andan optional radiator that can be swungout for cleaning is available.

The new PR 736 has long mainte-nance intervals for operating fluids.Depending on the nature of the work, and provided that regular qualitychecks are being performed, thehydraulic fluid interval can be as longas 8,000 hours of operation.

The standard Liebherr fleet manage-ment system LiDAT provides an accu-rate, efficient overview of essentialservicing work, warning messages, the

machine’s position and actual con-sumption data and filling levels.Depending on the customer needs, thedata is updated several times a day andcan be retrieved when needed bymeans of a web browser. An automaticalarm function also can be selected inthe event of a machine leaving its pre-determined zone or if a critical operat-ing situation arises.

Extended Track Life, HighComfort in Operation

The track assemblies for Generation6 dozers also have been redesigned. Inorder to extend the operating life of thetrack and the sprocket, the drivesprockets are now of larger diameterwith more teeth in mesh. When operat-ing in abrasive surfaces, optional trackassemblies with rotary bushings areavailable. In addition to being 100 per-cent exchangeable, they prolong thereplacement intervals for this specifictype of work.

With its downward-angled bodypanel edges and panoramic windowsthat include the door area, the PR 736provides the operator with a completeview of the machine’s working attach-ments and the surrounding terrain. Theexhaust system is entirely concealed bythe A-post so that the operator’s view isunobstructed. Increased visibilityallows for more efficient machine oper-ation and promotes safety.

The PR 736’s operator cab has been

newly designed. The operator canmove the ergonomically-shaped travelcontrols to the most convenient posi-tion. An integral contact switch in thecomfortable seat identifies the opera-tor’s presence automatically withoutthe need for a safety lever to beengaged. The desired travel speed canbe preselected with without shiftinggears. The speed can be saved in thememory when direct selection is need-ed.

The PR 736 is equipped standardwith a touch-controlled display. Thetouch screen is the interface for the newcontrol structure for modular construc-tion. Additional options such as revers-ing cameras can be incorporated on thisscreen, as well as functions designedfor further comfort such as air condi-tioning control. The PR 736 can beequipped with alternative operatorinterfaces, with an inching brake pedalor different control levers.

High-performance LEDs illuminatethe work area effectively, even in unfa-vorable conditions. The modular light-ing concept is integrated into the PR736’s redesigned bodywork and can bechosen specifically to suit the applica-tions that the machine will perform.

Crews Use Ground Heaters for Concrete to Properly Cure

so much that we could finish bothphases in one season,” said AllenFrankl, project manager of DickAnderson Construction ofBozeman, Mont. “In 2014 we didsome sidewalk work, seeding andgrading; things we couldn’t finishin the last season of 2013. We alsohad to put in some joint sealant anddo some slope protection.“The whole project was acceler-

ated. We started on March 11,2013, and by July 23, 2013, weopened the first half of the bridge,”Frankl said. “Crews worked sixdays a week and 16-hour days toaccelerate the construction so wewere able to finish the first phaseand get the bridge open, which wasthe most critical part.” The 7th Avenue dual-bridge

along I-90 in West Bozeman wasreplaced with one single bridgethat includes four driving lanes, two in each direction, two left-hand-turn lanes onto the I-90 west-bound on-ramp, a raised median,5-ft. (1.5 m) sidewalks and 10-ft.(3 m) shoulders on each side of thebridge to accommodate bicyclesand pedestrians. It also is ADAaccessible, in conjunction with theBozeman Area Transportation Plan.“This really was a great project

and we’re proud of what the crewscould accomplish. The State ofMontana was a great partner on theproject. They made some greatdecisions and went above andbeyond while working with us,”Frankl said. Lori Ryan, communications

specialist of the MontanaDepartment of Transportation, explained that each phase involveddetouring traffic, removing the oldstructure, and placing half of thenew structure. The original inter-change consisted of two adjacenttwo-lane bridges. One bridge wasdemolished and two-way trafficwas maintained on the other exist-ing structure. Half of the newstructure was constructed that waswide enough to handle three-lanesof traffic during Phase 2. Phase 1also including adding a lane to thewestbound ramp.Phase 1 included the removal of

the northbound structure, the eastbridge, which crosses I-90, andhandling two lanes of North 7thAvenue traffic on the existingsouthbound structure while half ofthe new bridge was being built. Phase 2 included shifting traffic

to the new half of the structure thathandled three lanes of North 7thAvenue traffic while the existingsouthbound structure, the westbridge, was removed and replacedwith the other half of the newstructure, information from theMontana Department ofTransportation said. Bridge removal was accom-

plished by using a specialized sub-contractor who was able to demol-ish and drop the bridge onto theInterstate below with a cushion ofsand for protection, Ryan added. The rubble and sand cushion wasthen removed in one operation.Using this method, the bridge wasdemolished overnight.

But finishing both phases in oneseason was no easy task. “Most everything on the project

was as was anticipated and thestate did a good job of letting usknow what to anticipate,” Franklsaid. But one of the biggest thingsthat no one anticipated was thatwhen we placed the second half ofthe bridge deck in late Novemberthat we would have 30-below zerotemperatures to deal with. Wethought it would get down to zerobut it reached 28-below for about10 days. “The cold temperatures made it

difficult to keep the deck warmenough to allow proper concretecuring,” Frankl added. “We usedthree glycol loop-fed groundheaters and we covered the deckwith the heater hoses and quadru-ple covered them. We also hadmonitors spread out over the deckand we had to move the monitorsaround to make sure there were nocold spots. We also had to clean offthe bottom of the deck to keep airmovement down so if a truck wentunder the deck it didn’t movewarm air out and replace it withcold air.”A wide array of excavators with

330 and 355 demo hammers andnumerous forklifts and graderswere used to excavate 25,821 cu.yd. (19,741 cu m) of excavationbackfill. A 125-ton (113 t) Loraincrane and a 100-ton (90.7 t)Manitowoc crane could be seen onsite along with an 830 dieselimpact hammer for driving the

BRIDGE from page 1

see BRIDGE page 65

Bridge removal was accomplished by using a specialized sub-contractor who was able to demolish and drop the bridge ontothe Interstate below with a cushion of sand for protection.

Phase 1 included the removal of the northbound structure, theeast bridge, which crosses I-90, and handling two lanes of North7th Avenue traffic on the existing southbound structure while halfof the new bridge was being built.

Phase 2 included shifting traffic to the new half of the structurethat handled three lanes of North 7th Avenue traffic while theexisting southbound structure, the west bridge, was removed andreplaced with the other half of the new structure.

The 48-year-old dual-bridge replacement near Bozeman, Mont.,was originally scheduled to be completed in two phases.

Doosan has expanded its dealer network with the additionof Venture Drilling Supply as an authorized sales, parts, serv-ice and rental provider of Doosan equipment. The dealershipis located at 1150 County Road 155, Georgetown, Texas. In 1983, Venture Drilling Supply was established in

Tahlequah, Okla., by Wayne McCarthy. At the time,McCarthy owned and operated a drilling company and sawa need to provide professional sales and service of qualityconstruction equipment to customers. The company takespride in helping its customers sustain their own operationswith integrity and honesty. In the 30 years since its founding, the family owned and operated company has grown toinclude locations in Oklahoma and Texas. In late 2012, Venture Drilling Supply explored the idea of

expanding its product line. After meeting with Doosan,Venture realized the magnitude of its opportunity with thecompany.“We saw a company that was first and foremost commit-

ted to the distributors’ and end users’ demands, as well asbeing highly motivated to grow market share,” said ColtMcCarthy, vice president of operations and co-owner. “Notonly is Doosan ambitious and supportive, but they also havedeveloped high quality equipment that will hold its ownagainst any brand in the industry,” he added. “From thatpoint on Venture was all in.”It then became evident that if the company wanted to

become a key player in the central Texas equipment market,it would need to establish a more local presence. After exten-sive research the company decided on a new service andsales facility in the heart of “equipment row,” in north Austin.Venture is committed to bringing integrity and service to

its new central Texas location, according to the company.Venture believes its new and existing customers will benefitfrom Doosan equipment’s affordability and reliability.“(Doosan’s) reliability allows operators to meet their goals, and their comfortable ergonomics means less fatigue andhigher productivity,” McCarthy added.Venture Drilling Supply serves customers in the aggre-

gate, utility, recycling and demolition markets, as well ascontractors and municipalities. The dealership will distribute Doosan heavy excavators,

wheel excavators, wheel loaders, mini excavators and artic-ulated dump trucks throughout central Texas and the city ofAustin. For more information, call 888/953-7455 or visit ven-

Construction UnemploymentFalls to 7 Percent; Lowest in YearsConstruction employment totaled 6 mil-

lion in September, the highest total sinceMay 2009, with a 12-month gain of 230,000jobs or 3.9 percent, Sandherr noted.Residential building and specialty trade con-tractors added a combined 11,800 employ-ees since August and 129,400 (5.9 percent)over 12 months.Nonresidential building and specialty

trade contractors hired a net of 3,700 work-ers for the month and 100,300 (2.7 percent)since September 2013. However, heavy andcivil engineering contractors, which performthe majority of public-sector construction, increased their headcount by only 500 inSeptember and 29,000 (3.3 percent) over theyear amid tight government budget condi-tions.The number of workers who said they

looked for work in the past month and hadlast worked in construction fell to 604,000 inSeptember. The last time the number ofunemployed construction workers droppedthat low was August 2007, a time when the

construction industry was struggling withwidespread construction worker shortagesthat prompted project delays and increasedcosts, Sandherr cautioned.Association officials said many firms cite

the lack of local, secondary-level vocationalprograms as one of the causes for the work-er shortages. As a result, association officialscontinued to urge federal, state and localofficials to enact the series of measures theassociation identified in its WorkforceDevelopment Plan that will make it easierfor school districts, local associations andprivate firms to establish career and technicaleducation and training programs.“Labor shortages happen when a growing

industry meets a stagnant pool of qualifiedworkers,” said Sandherr. “It is time to alignour education and training systems with cur-rent economic conditions so more youngpeople can benefit from the rebound in con-struction demand.”

add transportation funding back to analready-long list of self-created crisesthreatening our economic vitality.”Coalition officials noted that in July,

despite overall partisan gridlock, Congressoverwhelmingly extended authorization forthe surface transportation program andenacted a temporary funding patch for theHighway Trust Fund (HTF). That patchensures federal highway, bridge and transitinvestments will continue through next May.However, it was the fifth time in the pastseven years Congress took that approach, requiring nearly $65 billion in supplementalfunding to avoid significant cuts to trans-portation investments. On average, the HTF provides 52 percent

of the funding for highway and bridge capi-tal investments made by the nation’s statetransportation departments each year,Coalition officials added. “Congress needs to ‘keep the horse before

the cart’ and address the trust fund’s long-term revenue problem as was done in the1997 and 2004 tax bills. Then it can developand properly fund a six-year program billearly in 2015,” TCC Co-chair Pete Ruane, president and CEO of the American Road &Transportation Builders Association, said.

“And ‘status-quo’ funding levels would sim-ply perpetuate worsening traffic congestionand the inadequate physical condition of thenation’s highway and transit network.”The latest Congressional Budget Office

projections indicate Congress will need toidentify an additional $7 billion just to pre-serve highway and transit funding for the lastfour months of fiscal year 2015. Federal dataalso show maintaining current programfunding beyond 2015 will require an averageof $16 billion in additional revenues eachyear. That, Coalition officials point out, isthe revenue equivalent of a 10-cent increasein the federal gas tax.Despite widespread desire for a multi-

year federal surface transportation programreauthorization bill to boost economic com-petitiveness and job creation, such legisla-tion cannot move forward until a long-termtransportation funding solution is in place.Coalition officials are urging Congress toidentify and pass a funding HTF revenue fixto ensure Americans and the U.S. economycontinue to benefit from a world class trans-portation network.

Span Built With Pier Table1,978 ft. (602.9 m) of 24-in. (61 cm) diame-ter steel pipe pile for the project, Frankl said.A big row 4800 paver was used on the deck. The project also required cast-in-place

reinforced concrete for the substructure, while the superstructure was constructed of2,024 ft. (616.9 m) of prestressed concretebeams and cast-in-place deck that is rein-forced with epoxy coated rebar. Materialsneeded in the project included 678,353 lbs.(307,695.7 kg) of reinforcing steel, whichincluded black, epoxy and seismic, 2,8803cu. yd. (22,021 cm) of concrete and 6,891tons (6,251 t) of asphalt, Ryan said. The new bridge was built with an integral

pier table, which is a slim, horizontal cast-in-place concrete section supported on theintermediate pier that the girders frame intoat the middle of the bridge, Ryan said. Itallows for longer spans and eliminates theusual blocky-looking section supporting thespans that is used in many bridges. It main-tains vertical clearance for future interstatewidening. Choosing a single-lane bridge vs. the pre-

vious two-lane bridge “allows for turn lanestorage on the bridge against the median andprovided the necessary width for the traffic, bicycle and pedestrian lanes within a ‘foot-

print’ that did not require additional right-of-way,” Ryan said. The project was intended to address seis-

mic vulnerabilities, structural deficiencies, functional obsolescence and traffic safety. The previous bridge had been outgrown

and Bozeman needed more traffic capacity,ADA accessibility and bicycle lane capacity,Frankl added. “The old bridges were seismically sub-

standard and the deck was in need of rehabwork.”Retrofitting was considered at this bridge

location, including widening, but replace-ment was chosen over retrofit based on abenefit-cost analysis, Ryan said. The geot-echnical and structural analyses included apeak ground acceleration for a design eventwith a 7 percent probability of excellence in75 years at this location with its Class C soil. Some of the subcontractors on the project

include: Knife River Corporation; PoteetConstruction Inc.; H & H Earthworks Inc.;Grizzly Steel Inc.; High Mark Construction;Penhall Company; Montana Lines Inc.;Becker Landscaping; and OlsonCommunications.
