Wesley Interna, onal AcademyMaster the Art of Reading
2012 / 2013
Dear Parents and Students-‐ In the previous years at WIA students were able to voluntarily par:cipate in the Advanced Reading Challenge facilitated through Imagine Schools. The program encouraged students to read outside of their normal book choices and to be risk takers. We are no longer an Imagine school so we can not par:cipate in their reading program. I do s:ll see a need and desire for a similar program at WIA. We are lucky to have many ravenous readers in our school family and I want to give them the opportunity to con:nue to challenge them in the literary world. So I have developed a similar program for the scholars at Wesley Interna:onal Academy in grades 3-‐8. From my experience in the WIA library we have some very talented scholars in many areas and this program will allow students to show their talents. This program will also push students to read high quality books. I find that many students are stuck in a literary rut, they may only read Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dork Diaries, Captain Underpants or Bad KiNy. These :tles are good for fun reading, but this program will push students to explore the wide world of literary genres, amazing authors and incredible :tles. “Master the Art” of Reading will focus on reading quality literature and sharing reading experiences through art. I believe that art and literature are great companions. I also believe in student generated art work as decora:on for our school community. This program require the students to read a book, take an AR quiz (when applicable) and complete one of the art projects. A student does not have to be a great ar:st to par:cipate but they must be willing to try to express themselves through art. Students will be asked to donate many of their projects to the media center and other areas of our school building. Students will be able to keep some of their art projects. There will be some incen:ves with this program, but it should not be the sole reason a student par:cipates. There will be small rewards as students finish a book and project (bookmarks, pencils, etc…) and there will be a celebra:on for those who complete the en:re program (to be determined). Students will be asked to read 25 books and complete the projects*. There is a standard for 4th-‐8th grade that students will read 25 books a year and this program will help students to reach that goal. There will be some regula:ons as to what books count for the program (see the next page). Also, there will be specific art projects for students to choose from (see art project page). Lastly, I want to ask parents to be a part of this program by encouraging your student/s to work hard at this program. Remember this is voluntary so if it seems like too much on top of the school work load your students may not want to par:cipate.
Sincerely-‐Andrea Everton / Library Media Specialist, [email protected]
*Because of the students’ rigorous work load I have changed the project requirement to 10. Students should s,ll read 25 books and take the AR test and then complete projects for their 10 favorite.
Books Eligible for Master the Art of Reading
-‐The books that a student read for their classroom teacher are automa:cally included as eligible books for the program. The student will simply have to take the AR test and complete a chosen art project. (This includes books that they have already read this school year.)
-‐Students will be required to read 5 nonfic:on books on their reading level as part of the program requirements. With the switch to Common Core standards is a push to have children read more nonfic:on / informa:onal texts. There are so many great nonfic:on books and many students are either in:midated by them or think they are boring; this is an opportunity to change their percep:ons.
-‐ Students will be asked to read one book from each of the following genres; Realis:c Fic:on, Historical Fic:on, Poetry, Biography (which counts as a nonfic:on book), Fantasy, Mystery and Science Fic:on. This will encourage students to explore the world of literature and to read outside of their comfort zone.
-‐ The rest of the books are to be chosen either from the book list I have generated or chosen by the student with approval from Ms. Everton, the classroom teacher or parent. Remember the books read for this program are to be of high quality. (The list will be available from Ms. Everton.)
-‐ Books that will not count will be comic books or other similar books, cartoon related books or other entertainment books and books that are to far below a student’s reading level.
Examples: No Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dear Dumb Diaries, Dork Diaries, Captain Underpants, Bad KiNy, Goosebumps, Pokemon, Ninjago, etc…
Art Projects for Master the Art of Reading
Ceiling Tile Book Cover-‐ Students can purchase a ceiling :le from Lowe’s or Home Depot. The student will then either create their own version of a cover for the book on the :le or replicate the books cover. The completed book cover ceiling :le will be donated to WIA and will replace a blank :le in the media center.
IB Learner Profile Pennant-‐ Students can create a pennant that portrays the IB learner profile aNribute most displayed by the main character in the book.
Book Quilt-‐ Students can create a paper miniature quilt with each square represen:ng a specific character or event from the book.
Book Map-‐ If the book takes place in many loca:ons the student may create a colored map. Students should include all important loca:ons men:oned in the book.
Pain,ng/Drawing-‐ If the students want to really show their ar:s:c skills they may paint or draw a pivotal scene from the book.
Character Trading Cards-‐ Students may create a set of trading cards for each character in the book. The cards should have their picture on one side and something about the character and their contribu:on to the story on the other side.
Plot Mobile-‐ Students may create a mobile to hang from the ceiling that portrays the plot of the book.
Student Choice-‐ Students may come up with a project of their choice that allows them to express their learning through art. The student should get the project approved by Ms. Everton before they begin.
