Wesley inAmerica 2017October 11 – Arrive in Savannah – St. Simon’s IslandWelcome to Savannah! Our representative will greet you at the airportand escort you to the bus for the journey to St. Simon’s Island*. Thisafternoon, visit the Moore Museum on the grounds of Epworth by theSea. Here, the history of the Wesley’s time in Georgia and the historyof the Methodists in the colonies will come to life. This UnitedMethodist Center will be our home for the next two days, with hotelrooms, Wi‐Fi, and meals. (D)

*In order to be included on the transfer to St. Simon's Island, your flightshould arrive no later than 12pm at the Savannah airport. Pleaseprovide EO with your flight schedule no later than 60 days prior todeparture. If you arrive later than 12pm you will need to make your ownarrangements to Epworth by the Sea.

October 12 – Jekyll and St. Simon’s IslandsThis morning, enjoy a tour of St. Simon’s Lighthouse and free time inthe downtown area before we cross over to Jekyll Island. Originally anexclusive “club” limited to 100 wealthy owners, the community ispreserved as a window into the world of American privilege from the1880’s to the 1930’s. One of the stops on this morning’s tour is the FaithChapel with its Tiffany stained glass windows. Walk the paths of FortFrederica. Here Charles Wesley served James Oglethorpe as hissecretary in 1733‐4. John Wesley would come to care for Charles andserve as a priest for the local congregants for a time. Stand at theWesley Oak in the yard of Christ Episcopal Church, just outside of thefort. Here Wesley preached to the locals during his time here. Enjoy abrief tour of the church and have time to see the graveyard, rich withlocal history that dates back to Colonial times. (B, D)

October 13 – Fort King George and Cockspur IslandThis morning we leave Epworth behind and make our way towardSavannah. Stop at Fort King George, a recreation of an English Colonialfort. Walk the paths and see a demonstration of life for a British soldier

on the frontier of the empire. Continue on to Cockspur Island. On thegrounds of Fort Pulaski is the marker representing where John andCharles Wesley, along with James Oglethorpe and the settlers cameashore. The origin of Fort Pulaski dates back to the Madisonadministration, when forts were built along the coastline to protectfrom foreign invasion. After falling to the Georgian militia in January1861, the fort was reinforced with manpower and artillery to protectthe waterways to Savannah. Union forces recaptured the fort after atwo day battle April 10 – 11, 1862, eliminating Savannah as a port forthe Confederacy. Walk the extensive facilities here. Finish your daywith dinner after checking into your Savannah hotel. (B, D)

October 14 – SavannahThis morning, enjoy a walking tour of the Savannah Squares. Stop atReynolds Square, where a statue of John Wesley stands, andOglethorpe Square, where the Moravian missionaries of John Wesley’sship experiences are commemorated, as well as the founder of theGeorgia colony, James Oglethorpe. Worship with the present daycongregants of Christ Episcopal Church. John Wesley was priest hereduring his time in Savannah. After the service, celebrate the noon timemeal together, and then you will have the afternoon to explore andshop in Savannah. Dinner tonight will be on your own. (B, L)

October 15 – The First African Baptist Church and Magnolia PlantationThis morning we will visit the First African Baptist Church of Savannah.Organized in 1773, the present structure was built by slaves after theirday labor was completed. The church was home to the first AfricanSunday School. The church also was a stop on the UndergroundRailroad for escaped slaves to assist them as they made their wayNorth. On our way to Charleston, we will walk the manor and gardensof Magnolia Plantation. This antebellum property allows us to lookback into the history of the Old South and the changes that took placeafter the Civil War. Return to your Savannah hotel for dinner andovernight. (B, D)

This afternoon, enjoy a carriage ride tour throughCharleston. One of the early printing presses was here, and the WesleyHymnal was published here in 1737 on King Street. Return to your Savannahhotel. Dinner will be on your own tonight. (B)
