CO-CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE Deacon Will Hunter
God would like to be in a relationship with each of us in an intimate and spiritual way. If we are made in the image of God, would it not stand to reason that is why we too want to be in relationships? Relationships nurture, protect, guide and strengthen us by virtue of the bond of love that exists in the relationship. Relationships are given to us by God so we can share his love with one another. The question becomes then, which relationship becomes more important to us and for us, the one given to us by God or the one we have with God? The answer to the previous question should be quite obvious indeed, however, all too often, we place the love of the relationships given to us by God head and shoulders above our personal relationship with God. Too often we put our personal relationship with God on a “back burner” in favor of relationships that have become more pertinent, leaving God waiting for us to come back to him and his infallible love. How fair is that to God? How unimportant does this action make God feel? If we hold true to the first commandment, we should always want to put the love of God before anything or anyone else as God said we should. But, because God affords us such magnificent gifts in our lifetime, we lose sight of the most magnificent gift of all given to us, our personal relationship with God through Christ Jesus. We should take time each day to thank God for this magnificent gift and all the benefits that come with it. Focus on our personal relationship with God and all other gifts will find their proper home.
GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE Joe Earthman
Brother Knights, I would like to thank all the people who helped make our Summer Fling a great success:
Brother Knights that sold the tickets
People that bought the tickets
John Buck, Marion & Tony Lewandowski and their crew for cooking and serving the wonderful meal
Larry Tobias and his family for organizing the liquor raffle and those who sold the tickets
All Brother Knights that donated liquor for the raffle
Ladies Auxiliary for bringing the wonderful desserts,
for their donation to the raffle and for their continued support at all our functions
Catholic Daughters for serving the tea and donating a
prize to the raffle
Brother Knights and their wives who sold dinner and
dance tickets at the door
Brother Knights that came out to make sure our
grounds and facilities were in excellent condition for this occasion and for their dedication to this project each month.
Friends, without your support, none of this would have been possible. I thank you for your time and your dedication to this council. Thanks to all of our Brother Knights who attended this month's council meeting and just a reminder, all are welcome to join us for dinner before the meeting, capped off with "fellowship" in the Knight's Pub right after. We are also calling three names for the attendance prize instead of just one so there're now two more reasons to come to our monthly business meeting. October is an active month for 2917 and I hope many of our Brother Knights and families will be able to join us for the two main events on the 11th. Starting the day, 2917 will participate in the annual Special Olympics Softball Tournament. If you're an early riser, join us as we serve hot dogs and hamburgers to the athletes and their families. This outdoor event is a lot of fun, super rewarding and very heart warming.
Later that night, somewhere on the other end of the heart warming spectrum, is our 5th annual Casino Night at the hall. If you've not purchased your tickets, there is still time. There will be food, drinks, blackjack, poker, roulette, a big spinning wheel, silent auctions and lots more. Last year was my first year attending and I know this year will be even better! This is a big fundraiser for Catholic education and there will be a prize (not telling!) for the best Vegas dressed guy and gal, one each. So, dust off your shiniest threads and join us for a great time. Also, a big thanks to all of our Brother Knights who came
out to visit our veterans at the VA hospital in September!
Especially:
Shawn Hrncir, son of Brother Bob Hrncir.
William Wayne Sony, Army 1st Cavalry stationed at Ft. Hood, son of Brother Don and Paula Sony.
Brother Zach Kloss, son of Brother Mike and Jan Kloss.
Next Officers’ meeting is Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 7:00 p.m.

We are looking for paid workers to set-up and clean-up the hall for council events and rentals. Job includes: sweeping, mopping, empting trash cans, moving tables and chairs. Contact Mickie Wendt at 713-694-2341 if interested. If you know of someone looking for a hall to host a party, birthday, wedding, anniversary, graduation, etc., please have them contact Mickie Wendt for hall rental information. Weekly workers for September were Joe Pavlik and Tony Lewandowski. Our 3rd Saturday monthly workers were very slim in numbers this month: Billy Hoffart, Ben Kaminski, Nick Navarro, Lydia Clifton, and John Buck. These few people performed 15 tasks on Saturday. It is with volunteers that Council 2917 and the NSCC are able to save money to raise our contributions to charity, a key principle of the Knights of Columbus. See more information on charity in the Family Director section. A special thank you to Rosalie Lobpries for her donation of donuts to help get our day started. Rosalie donates donuts in memory of her husband, Brother Leo Lobpries, who was a good worker for our council and provided donuts for many of our work days. At September's workday, I was corrected on the ages of our Saturday workers that I mentioned in last month’s newsletter. Ben Kaminski was listed as 80 years old and he wanted me and everyone else to know that he is over 85. He said that even at 85 he is able to come out to volunteer for a 4-6 hour day for his council, making the challenge to others younger than him. Is there anyone willing to take the challenge?

FAMILY DIRECTOR John Buck
Summer Fling: We had another great success. Thanks to all who sold tickets, cleaned the hall, set-up the hall, donated items and prepared the mini-raffle, the cookers and servers, the Ladies Auxiliary for providing the desserts, the Catholic Daughters for providing the tea, and all that attended
and supported this event. Excluding the Ladies Auxiliary and the CDA, we had about 30 volunteers come together to make this event the success that it was.
I want to thank the Ladies Auxiliary and the Catholic Daughters for their support. These ladies are always willing to help out and support our council functions—they don’t even wait to be asked—they volunteer! Thank you ladies for helping to make our functions a success. You are appreciated! . Movie: Bloodmoney: How the Abortion Industry Really Works will be shown at our council on
Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7:00 p.m. Please see more information on this movie in this newsletter. I ‘d like to say a few words about our Order, mainly the Principle of Charity. We hear about
performing charity from our Catholic Church—from the parish level and up and from the Knights of Columbus—from the individual councils to Supreme. All councils are given a charity goal—some make it, some don’t. Some councils exceed their goal, others do not. Some make their goal early, some make their goal late. We, at Council 2917, make our KC State Charity goal, and mostly make our goal early. It seems that most councils these days are parish councils—a council formed at the individual parish. Most of these councils work their fundraisers for the support of their parish. At Council 2917, we make our KC State required goal, and then some. Along with the required State Charity, we have our own council charities that we support. Our primary charities that we support each year are: St. Rose of Lima food pantry, Assumption food pantry and Catholic school education. We also support parish requests, we sponsor families at Christmas time, we donate to pro-life and many other charities. Over the past several years, Council 2917 has grown and widened it's charitable contributions. We are now looked at as a council to model after. How do we raise money for our charitable contributions? One way is Bingo. Bingo is played every Friday night and greatly helps us to make our charitable contributions. Our annual Casino Night profit is dedicated only to the Catholic School Education Fund. The Summer Fling profit is put into the General Fund Account. How are we able to give so much with these few fundraisers? It is through VOLUNTEERISM. It is you and I that help make our council an example to other councils. Why and how is it that you and I are helping to make these charitable contributions? It is because with each volunteer act that we perform at the council, we are saving one more expense that the Council or NSCC does not need to pay. This money can then be used for Council 2917 Charities. We do not ask for cash donations to support our charity fund. We only ask for volunteers to give an amount of time so that we can save on paid labor expenses. These saved labor expenses roll over into more money available for charity. Remember, Charity is a main Principle of the Order of the Knights of Columbus. Financial contributions make our charitable goals, but your volunteerism helps Council 2917 exceed our minimum charitable goal. So when the call for volunteers is out, respond and serve. Join our army of volunteers, help make Council 2917 stronger. We have two upcoming opportunities for you to volunteer—Casino Night and Special Olympics. Both will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2014. Casino Night needs volunteers to set up the hall on Friday after Bingo and early Saturday morning to decorate the hall. Special Olympics is also needing volunteers on the same Saturday. Both of these events are very rewarding.

Thank you to the Catholic Daughters for providing delicious pizza at our August Rosary. Our next council pro-life Rosary will be held Monday October 27 at 7:00 p.m. Join The Helpers of God’s Precious Infants in a Peaceful Prayer, Mass and Rosary on
Saturday, October 11, 2014 - Mass 8:30 a.m. Catholic Charismatic Center, 1949 Cullen, Houston
Followed by Rosary procession with the statue of Our Lady of Fatima to Planned Parenthood (I-45 Gulf Freeway) with Jericho march by youth group.
BloodMoney is a documentary film that exposes the truth behind the abortion industry from the Pro-Life perspective. Narrated by Dr. Alveda King (niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.), Bloodmoney takes a critical look into abortion. Abortion is a multi-billion dollar industry that literally thrives on the destruction of unborn babies and the traumatizing of young pregnant women. The film includes numerous interviews with leaders of the pro-life movement. It covers a variety of issues, including "Roe V. Wade, Planned Parenthood, the scientific fact that life begins at conception, and how abortion affects women who have had one. Abortion is big business. Planned Parenthood and other abortion perpetrators are huge profit centers. Those who run abortion businesses make a very good living. This pro-life documentary, released last year, makes these facts perfectly clear. The film debunks the great American myth that Planned Parenthood and other perpetrators of abortion on demand care about the welfare of women and girls. Bloodmoney offers heart-wrenching moments: one woman describes botched abortions and coercive marketing tactics, another woman describes how she was pressured into an abortion, and another woman recounts her young daughter’s stunned reaction when she confessed that an older sister had been aborted. The movie is 1 hr and 20 minutes and open to all Brother Knights, their families (age appropriate children), and friends. All KC Councils and churches are also invited and encouraged to attend.
You are invited to a showing of the movie

Dear Ladies, I’m sorry I did not get to see y’all at the meeting. I hated to cancel it, but I didn’t want to risk any one being out in the weather. They were predicting it to be bad with flooding. FOURTH DEGREE NEWS
Sir Knights:
If interested, the newly installed Faithful Pilot had to resign due to additional requirements at work. You need only attend the next meeting. Sir Knights, we hope you can attend our meetings and show your support. Participating in turnouts is a principle activity of our assembly. It’s a wonderful way to show support to our parishes, our priests and our country. The Sir Knights in full regalia or in “official dress” are very impressive to the attendees at any event.
Some of the upcoming events we have are:
Oct. 11, 2014 - Bishop Sheltz will be celebrating Mass at 5:00 P.M. This “White Mass” will be honoring our health and medical professionals.
Oct. 11, 2014 - Cardinal Dinardo will hold Confirmation at St. Joseph’s Church at 7:00 P.M.
Oct. 19, 2014 - Archbishop Fiorenza will be celebrating Mass at the Co-cathedral at 11:00 A.M. honoring our professional firefighters.
Oct. 26, 2014 - Cardinal Dinardo will be celebrating Mass at 3:00 P.M. for all those couples celebrating 50 years of marriage.
As you can see, these turnouts are an excellent way for the Knights of Columbus to become more visible to not only Catholics attending Mass but also to the attendees who are from different faiths. Also, we can show support to our medical professionals, our law enforcement and to our first responders.
All Sir Knights are welcome—either in “Full Regalia” or in the official dress which is a tuxedo with the service baldric.
